University of Arizona: WHAT TO WEAR

Hi! I'm participating in formal recruitment this August at University of Arizona. I'm so excited! I have friends who have rushed in the south but I've heard that people dress differently for rush in Arizona, and that its more casual. I was just wondering mainly if short-shorts are appropriate - I don't mean where you can see anything you wouldnt want to! but something along the lines of this: http://www.forever21.com/images/mode...0036724-01.jpg these are the pictures of what the University Panhellenic Council suggests http://arizonagreek.orgsync.com/org/pan/whattowear but sometimes it's hard to tell just by their pictures, anyone who's been through rush at u of a would be of GREAT help or anyone who was at a west coast, southwest, or similar school.

Thanks in advance!

Unless you are a teeny tiny girl (5 feet or under and 90 lbs or under) those shorts are WAY too short.

I really hope they're kidding with some of those other oufits. (I don't think sporting big sunglasses all through rush would be appropriate.)

AZ-AlphaXi 06-26-2012 10:01 PM

I've seen shorts that short on PNMs waiting outside houses for parties. I think they are to short, but that's my old lady opinion. I've seen tank tops, and bare mid-drifts, and cut offs. I've also seen sun dresses and skirts and not-so shorts.

It will be hot and you will be walking from house to house in 100+ (unless it rains) degree heat. You need to wear something light and cool that also doesn't look like you're going clubbing. You also need to wear comfortable shoes.

Regardless of where rush is occurring and how hot it is, my thought has always been that if you're not sure about shorts, wear a cute pair of capris. You can't go wrong if it's the length you're concerned about.

Better to play it safe and maybe be a little warmer, than be uncomfortable and/or wear something that's inappropriate.

And you can always wear shorts on Day 2 after you see how everyone else is dressed on Day 1.

I - oddly enough am 5' 0" and about 100lbs haha since I'm short I usually can pull off shorter shorts but I guess a skirt would be a safer bet? thanks for the tips

If each round gets slightly dressier, then I don't understand why they say shorts, skirts, and sundresses are ok for everything except pref. Also, their example of an acceptable pref dress looks kinda homecoming-ish to me.

AZ Theta and Bear Down this is your domain. The pictures in the book are spot on. That is how the young women dress in AZ and at ASU and UofA. It will be HOT HOT HOT probably over 105. Make sure you have a lot of water (I mean stay super hydrated) and if you can find a fan with a mister (the water wont stay around) that will help keep you cool. Wear comfortable shoes especially if your feet swell in the heat (maybe that is an old lady problem!) The white shorts in the picture are not to short for recruitment in AZ.

Good Luck!

I think every chapter is looking for women with cameltoe.

AZTheta 06-27-2012 10:09 AM

FYI - until recruitment ends in August, I am not posting on any Arizona related threads, to avoid the appearance of impropriety (we had issues on GC with another poster last year, and her chapter received recruitment infractions). AZ-AlphaXi & BearDown can jump in, but I'm being silent (I know, I know - hard to believe). I will say that AXOrushadvisor's comments are accurate in all ways.

LOL. AXOAdvisor, I understand dressing for the heat, but I don't understand dressing fug. That gray pref dress with whatever's going on in her hair? That black print skirt with the K Mart shower flip flops? The blue sneakers ensemble??? There are comfortable sandals out there that are FAR more flattering. Not to mention the funk that must rise from those sneakers at the end of the day.

AXOrushadvisor 06-27-2012 11:38 AM

^^sorry you two! I had no idea there was an issue last year.

Good Luck!

My husband and I were born, raised, and lived in AZ for over 20+ years. AZ in the summer is hot as hades. If you're an AZ kid you get used to it or at least smart about it. If you're new to AZ, summer heat is a kick in the pants.

My daughter was born in AZ but we moved to SoCal before she entered K. We went back to Tucson last summer on our pre-college decision visits. I forgot how hot it could be. My daughter asked if it was always that hot. I said only May through Sept. She looked at me like I was completely out of my mind.

The attire they're showing looks like what the UofA girls were wearing when we were there.

IndianaSigKap 06-27-2012 02:57 PM

I got to the Phoenix area once a year to visit family and friends, always in July, and it's so hot it used to take my breath away when I walked outside. I have gotten used to it over the years. The first two outfits shown would be much cuter and cooler with sandals, maybe metallic. As far as the dresses go in the second set of photos, the one on the left (black and white skirt) is even a little long compared to what I see when I am there.

Shoes

Thank you so much for all the advice I feel a lot more comfortable picking my outfits now - I was just curious - for the first two or maybe even three days I was planning to wear cute sandals or flats since I know I'll be doing a lot of walking but is it worth it to wear a pair of wedges for days 3/4? or should I just stick to easy sandals.

Thanks again!

FSUZeta 06-27-2012 03:37 PM

You could wear comfortable shoes or flip flops to walk from house to house and then switch to your wedges while you wait outside for the parties to begin.

AZpnm 07-01-2012 03:25 PM

since day 1 and day 2 are half and then the other half of the houses would it be ok to wear the same sandals and necklace? no one would know but my rho chis and the other girls in my rush group right because you only do half the houses each of those days

FSUZeta 07-01-2012 03:34 PM

yes

33girl 07-01-2012 10:47 PM

Just make sure they are very comfortable and sturdy sandals, and that they have enough time to de-funkify overnight. :)

Yes, lots of girls wear wedges for the later days. Good luck!

I am also going through recruitment at UA in the fall. Any advice on what shoes to wear each day? I understand heels for preference, but what about philanthropy day and skit day? Any advice would be helpful!

Also, for the casual day, what bottoms would you suggest? I was thinking black and white shorts, because I wanted to steer away from jean shorts. Good idea?

Thanks!

AXOrushadvisor 07-10-2012 09:05 PM

^ I would def put flip flops in your bag to wear to walk from house to house if you have heels on. Round 1 & 2 -I would look at the booklet but they are showing tennis shoes. Those or rainbows should be fine. Day 3 They are also showing flip flops. I would go with skirt appropriate sandals or a wedge. This day is typically a little bit dressier. j

I think you are ok with jean shorts just not cut off ones for round 1. AZ is so hot and casual that you should dress for comfort but still look very put together. Black or white shorts are fine as long as your cheeks are not hanging out the bottom.

I find it odd that the UA site uses pictures from websites instead of their own Panhel and Rho Chis.

AzTriDeezy 08-07-2012 09:22 PM

I kinda just skimmed this thread so I apologize if I'm repeating anyone.

The website they give to PNMs with the outfits is SO outdated and they need to update it.

So many girls wear shorts that are too short. After awhile you don't even notice it. As long as you don't look trashy its not a big deal.
