Potential New Members Do the Darndest Things!

ITT we talk about wacky things pnms do.

I received an information packet for writing a rec which featured the pnm holding a baby duck.

Ahhh, adorable fluffy baby duck! (I am not sending the picture, which is great of the duck but only really shows the top of the pnm's head).

She should be grateful - you know she would be called "duck girl".

FSUZeta 05-26-2012 11:47 AM

Love it!!! Let the games begin!

ComradesTrue 05-26-2012 01:09 PM

Last year we had a PNM send in a photo of her on a swing. Not a posed, sitting-still kind of swing... she was at least 4 feet up in the air at the time the picture was snapped.

While the actives are much too young to probably know the song, us old-fogey alums couldn't help but launch into "And she was swingin', just a swingin'..."

We did her a huge favor and did not pass the photo on to the chapter.

SWTXBelle 05-26-2012 04:01 PM

At least this year (fingers crossed) the "sitting on the train tracks" trend seems to have died. We had lots of Paulines in peril last year.

ASTalumna06 05-26-2012 07:08 PM

A few years ago, when I was a Recruitment Advisor for my chapter, we heard about an incident that occurred at Theta Phi's party where a PNM started yelling at a sister and almost hit her. I forget the reason why the PNM got so pissed off, but clearly it was ridiculous. My chapter and ASA found out about it VERY quickly. Needless to say, that PNM didn't receive a bid from any chapter.

About 15 years ago, we we doing a Grease skit for Theme Night. At the end, all the members were up front around the stage singing "You're the one that I want"...a PNM jumped up and danced with them! OMG! Who is this person?

Well, we pledged her and for the next 15 years DG was an integral part of her life. She was a truly dedicated member, serving as a chapter officer and alum officer until her untimely death in February of this year from complications of Cystic Fibrosis. We miss her terribly.....

Wow! Sounds like she was a great girl with some guts! So sorry to hear about your loss.

Titchou 07-13-2012 11:47 PM

That she was. Thank you!

Had one girl send me a picture with her younger sister in her packet. I called and asked if she could get another picture with just herself. She told me its okay you can just send that and tell them which one is me (little sister is 11 so I think they would figure it out anyway lol) I told her that was not really going to work and I needed a picture of just her. She went back and forth with me a few days until I finally said I would not be comfortable to write for her with out all the proper information. I had a new picture in 30 minutes...

In June, I had one send me a 6-page resume, absolutely packed. I called and said that I really needed to whittle this down to what was most important because no way would the sisters be reading 6 pages. She insisted it was all important.

I finally had to whittle it down myself to save her in spite of herself, knowing that entries like "did ring toss booth in my street's carnival" would win her no points. Or maybe it would've won her the title of "Ring Toss Girl".

LOL I needed a laugh this morning!

On the flip side of this one of my best friend's D sent a resume to me that was awful, I knew she had many more volunteer hours, awards and activities then listed. She is a very sweet girl and when I asked her to add stuff she said she didn't want to seem like she was bragging..

Greek_or_Geek? 07-14-2012 10:24 AM

The photos. Oh the photos. This year I had one where the full length photo had the PNM dressed in one of those collegiate game day dresses that are made from t-shirts. Tight, strapless, short and showing way too many of her assets. She was also wearing those big mirrored sunglasses that covered half her face and made it unrecognizable. While I respected her effort at school spirit and I tried to communicate to her that something a little less Kardashian would be more helpful. It took a lot of back and forth, but she finally gave me a full length from her senior portrait series. A lovely photo that actually looks like her, but not without a lot of pouting.

:D less Kardashian... love that quote!

My question is why do so many of these girls think that as alumnae we have no idea what we are talking about?? Same goes for moms that weren't greek but have a daughter going thru recruitment so they hear a few things and think they know it all?

Our big one of all time was a girl who showed up to round one in a cute little white yellow and green sundress with her legs spray painted green. When asked why she sai she didnt have tight the right color to match.

Would not have believed it either if I had not seen it but it is true.

I recall, about 10 years ago, a PNM that submitted a picture of her pool side in a white bikini. Mind you that this was the picture she submitted directly to Panhell for all the chapters. :( I don't get why anyone would use that kind of photo.

They're thinking they look like this:

But they're coming off as this (you're welcome, k_s):

http://cdn2.wickedweasel.com/assets/...jpg?1340072148

Not that either is appropriate.

LOL-Thanks to your post I am now having to clean my computer screen-diet coke all over it!

Red wine all over mine! (After all, it is Saturday night!!!)

I had a request for a REC from a PNM this year for Auburn. I did not know her from Adam, so I said forward me your resume and I will let you know. Never heard back. I guess she thought I could pull the information out of thin air.

dgdramadawg 07-14-2012 09:33 PM

I had a girl who sent a mass email to a bunch of people (like, way more than the number of chapters on her campus) asking for recs. Her spelling and grammar were so atrocious that I had difficulty figuring out what was going on in her resume.

Oh, and I had never met her before, nor did I know anyone else on her distribution list. Sigh.

Leather Jacket Girl

This is a pnm I shall never forget. At USC (Los Angeles) recruitment is very competitive. Attire for the day was summer dress as the temperature hovered in the 90s. As the women came in the chapter house one woman did "stand out". She wore black leather boots, black leather skirt with looped chains for a belt. To complete her outfit she wore a long sleeved black leather jacket! For earrings she had safety pins. I wondered where she had left her motorcyle.

After entering she made no effort to talk with anyone and acted as if she could hardly wait to leave. At the end of the party it was a pleasure to escort her out the door.

I have no idea why she even registered for recruitment. Perhaps there was a bet involved. It was no surprise to learn later she did not receive any invitations for the second day of parties.

Bump

ComradesTrue 07-19-2012 04:53 PM

1. Don't pick a college because you are following a boyfriend there
2. If said boyfriend dumps you over the summer, don't go to your *public* t_witter account and create all sorts of crazy drama and make hourly posts about how miserable you are without him.
3. Do not state on your *again, PUBLIC* Facebook that you plan to only be at your university for one semester before transferring.

Screen shots are forever.

All this and an SEC recruitment. SMH.

This is FUNNY!!!!! We had a PNM once whose brother was a great friend with our chapter, and she was a very attractive young woman. Long, black hair to her waist, big blue eyes, very good looking & great grades - and a mouth that would make a truck driver blush!

ADPiTigergurl 08-02-2012 10:48 AM

Last year we had a girl go through, who was difficult to talk to on day one. Day two (talked to her again as the door went wrong) was philanthropy night, she completely turned her back to my sister so she could do the craft then I came to bump her she didn't even turn around to acknowledge the bump. She didn't acknowledge me or speak. She sat in scilence until the end of the party. Um why are you even going through recruitment? I've heard from friends in other chapters she pulled similar stunts in their houses.

carnation 08-02-2012 10:49 AM

:eek:Did she pledge anywhere?

ADPiTigergurl 08-02-2012 11:04 AM

Nope she was not invited back to any house after round 2 that I'm aware of.

Greek_or_Geek? 08-02-2012 11:46 AM

I had the worst one yet this weekend, and it ended up being one of the first no recs I've ever written. I'm still a little befuddled about it.

It was a last minute request from a local PNM. She attends an academically challenging private school. Salutatorian. Involved. Attractive. On the surface of it, she appears to be a terrific candidate.

Then I googled her. Most of her Facebook is private and the public part is as pristine as a PNM's should be. The next thing that pops up is her Model Mayhem online portfolio. She even mentioned modeling as a hobby on her AP form. Let's just say she's probably better off looking to live in the Playboy Mansion than a sorority house. It was all out there for the world to see. Yikes.

carnation 08-02-2012 11:49 AM

OK, we have to hear if that one pledges.

Most likely she was forced to by her parents. I think that's behind the majority of these "weird rushee" stories.

AlphaXi_Husky 08-02-2012 12:06 PM

Several years ago (maybe 7 or 8? I can't remember), a PNM coming through recruitment turned in a photo to Panhellenic of herself in a pink princess hat. Like the one that's a tall cone with fabric attached at the point. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be funny or what, but I could not stop people from calling her Pretty Pink Princess.

AFAIK, she did not end up in a house.
