Why all of this anger?
As I've been reading through a lot of the threads I've noticed a lot of people have been snippy or mean in their responses when PNMs have been asking questions. If they truly are potential new members then they don't know if what they're asking is wrong, stupid or offensive; it's an innocent question! I can't seem to wrap my head around why people are mean in their responses. If you want someone to join greek life, why give them a bad taste in their mouths from the get-go?

There are some mean-spirited people in the world and yes, some of them are Greek. We do however, seem to have a large percentage of them on GreekChat.

oh dear.

If they can't take a little ribbing on some online forums, how are they ever gonna deal with all the pressures of Greek life? ;)

My whole question wasn't about reputations there was a lot more to it. I'm just nervous. I was wondering how reputations have affected other people and how they handle it or if they end up being overwhelmingly true. I wasn't trying to discuss the bad things said about everyone, just about how you should deal with it or if I should be nervous about them.

Also, reputations are made up by people often not in the group. Get to know the women, and see for yourself. We're not trying to be unkind, but as you're now an adult, you're going to have to make decisions for yourself. It's part of growing up and yes, it is hard. My advice would be go into it with an open mind and make the decision that's best for you. What's best for another person may not be the best for you, so weigh all of your options and go from there. But asking about reputations and whether one sorority is good or bad on a forum about Greek life isn't the wisest way to start your time here. Even if they're "the worst ugliest meanest stupidest" group on your campus, guess what? One of us is probably a part of that group. See how that could be construed as offensive? |
I'm sorry to anyone that I have offended. Obviously, I am new. This is exactly what I was talking about. Instead of just explaining it, I've had four people jump on me for what I've said. I didn't mean to start anything I'm just trying to figure it all out. I really am sorry.

GC has a few unwritten rules, yes. A lot of it is common sense though. Don't ask questions which are highly subjective, e.g., "What is the reputation of ___ at ___"?
|
I thought my response in your thread was quite helpful actually.

It's time to grow a thicker skin. You have in no way been jumped on here. What you did get was clear concise advice about how to behave on this message board and through rush. That is a far cry from being jumped on. You might be embarrassed because you asked a question that you have now found out is a no-no, but the best way to handle that is to say mea culpa, not get defensive. It's a good life lesson to learn because trust me, you're going to get your foot in your mouth plenty of times in your life. If you can handle those blunders with dignity and grace you will go far in this world.
|
I really don't think anyone said anything rude to you on that post; they merely informed you of the reality and gave you some helpful facts. To be perfectly honest, the best approach on GreekChat is to sincerely thank those people who have given you good advice (KSUViolet06 and some others) and let everything else go.

If we had to explain that to every single newbie that came on this site, we'd do nothing else.

Can a page of the "unwritten" rules be...well...written?

I mean, I can see how someone brand new to Greek life may not know to not ask about reputations, or won't know that no one can tell them their chances of getting a bid. Those things aren't necessarily common sense if you know nothing about fraternities and sororities. There shoud be a page when people register that says in giant letters to not ask things like that ;). Haha.
|
GC people get ticked when a newbie starts asking questions without reading ANY of the threads or even doing a search.
Many, many of the answers can be learned just by keeping your mouth shut and reading, reading, reading FIRST. It gets old answering those same questions over and over and over and over. If you're too busy to read, we're too busy to answer you seriously. Not, however, too busy to toss you around like a cat playing with its prey!:p |
I apparently am one of the "mean, snippy, angry" people because I responded like this:

If you are even THINKING about asking such things, you are obviously a shallow, immature idiot who doesn't know what Greek life is about. You would be lucky if ANY sorority ANYWHERE gave you a bid. Do everyone a favor and don't bother rushing because you are doing it for the wrong reason. But NO ONE said that to you, because I don't think anyone believes that. People are trying to help you before you fall on your face in real life, with real sorority members, at your real school. Seriously, this is a message board. No one is going to fly to your side, hold your hand, and say "well honey, I don't know if you know this but...sometimes this and that...etc etc etc" and take 500 words to say something that should have been said in five. Didn't we just have one of these threads that tell us how mean we are? I didnt think we'd be due for another one for at least two months. Maybe we are getting meaner. :p

Announcement: I, AzTheta, am Mean and Evil. Yes, this is true, because a pretty precious snowflake princess told me so. I also am powerful enough to ruin peoples' entire lives and singlehandedly wreck everything for everyone.
Consequently, I claim all rights to Chairman of Mean and Evil. I will now handle it all for GC. I've got this covered. You all can go get manicures or something of the sort. Send letters of appreciation and checks in my honor to your favorite GLO philanthropy. As a Mean and Evil person, I do not need funding or kudos. in case there is any doubt:  |

No offense to you Oh Great Leader, but I feel like the level of meanness have been lowered after reading the OP's thread. Could we raise the standards please? |

Now I'm back to  because someone let the air out of one of my tires. Seriously? Annoying. If I find who did it, I will be very Mean and Evil indeed.
What is this thread about anyway? I forget. Oh wait, it's about melted laundry detergent, right? I don't like Tide. It makes me itch. My special snowflake skin is too good for Tide. And I actually forgot to eat dinner tonight and now it's too late to eat. More mad face. |
