The Initiation Dress

We seem to have started a new tradition here! Because we couldn't find a white dress last fall, my daughter borrowed a friend's dress in which to be initiated into AOPi. An hour ago, her good buddy from high school came over to borrow the dress--she'll be initiated into Alpha Xi Delta in it this week. We thought, how neat--let's have all the Greek girls around here be initiated in the dress and see how many sororities it can visit! How Panhellenic!

That is very cute!
A similar thing happend with my new chapter. Tons of girls didn't have a dress so they used a friends dress from another sorority(who else would have a dress similar?), we initiated about 70 women. My best buddy from DZ gave her dress to one of us and we still have it today!

That is soo cute. Just think how many girls and sororities the dress would have visited in a few years , too cool http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

The semester I pledged, there was a white skirt on my dorm floor that got LOADS of use! (especially since God forbid there would be a white dress in the stores after April)

This is only a joke:

I sure hope you all kept/keep that dress clean AFTER EACH USE! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

Something my chapter does is once you go alum you donate your dress to a collection of dresses that way people don't have to buy a new one (Besides where else would you wear that thing?) so that way it gets reused and you dont have other people paying for new dresses. We have about twenty, so some new members do buy them!

I wore my cousin's dress, she was initiated into DG and me into DZ http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif we should try that dress exchange - very cool idea carnation!

Ummm... Why white???

dzrose93 04-24-2001 11:00 AM

I thought you said you had been thru the first part of initiation before you dropped out of your sorority, somethinstupid. Did you not have to wear white?

three2tango 04-24-2001 11:25 AM

When I was initiated I wore black pants and a button-up.....no white dress required.

dzrose93 04-24-2001 11:27 AM

That's interesting, three2tango! I've never heard of any sorority girls wearing anything but white dresses for pledging in and initiation. Of course, I came from a small campus that only had a few sororities -- it may be that we all just by coincidence were required to have on white. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

three2tango 04-24-2001 11:31 AM

What's more interesting is that I was initiated into one of the sororities mentioned in this forum.

I guess each chapter has it's own style.

dzrose93 04-24-2001 11:35 AM

Really? Which one, if you don't mind me asking? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

three2tango 04-24-2001 11:38 AM

DG

dzrose93 04-24-2001 11:40 AM

Y'all are across the street from the DZ house at UGA! Big anchor out in the front yard! I remember during Rush last year, all the girls wore navy during Pref.

ilovemyglo 04-24-2001 11:46 AM

From what I understand white is used to represent purity and sincerity. Every sorority I KNOW of uses it. I think that is also the reason a wedding dress is white. Same principles I mean.

If your going to go greek, why not be a goddess?

You're exactly right on both counts, ilovemyglo! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

That is a good idea. We always wear black. Because it is easier to find and EVERYONE has one.

Last year during pref the air went out and we had to make over 100 fans with popcicle sticks and note cards to give to the girls.

It was terrible....it's very hard for me not to be grouchy when I am hot.

Hmmm...I have noticed from pictures as well as conversation, that white is the dress of choice for ceremonies for many sororities...

...yet, I wouldn't venture to say this is true of all sororities.

It seems like things always happen during Pref. One of our girls caught a piece of her hair on fire during our pref ceremony several years ago! She wasn't hurt or anything - but it was very hard to keep a straight face. That was the most interesting pref I've been involved in! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
