Playboy Magazine
I have recently decided that I would like to submit photos for Playboy's "College Girls" edtion of the magazine. Not to say that I will definately be in it, but I've thought it over for the last few weeks and have dedided that it would be a fun and exciting opportutnity if I were chosen to pose. The only obstacle, besides my family and boyfriend, are of course, my sisters. How should I bring up the topic? Should I wait to see if I'm asked to pose? What if they aren't accepting at all? Is doing something like this grounds for expulsion? I haven't really heard of other sorority women appearing in the magazine or from my schoool. My course of action as of now is to just wait and see what happens but I don't want to be caught having to make a decision in a limited amount of time. What do you suggest? Thanks!

Definitely wait to see if you're asked to pose. There is no use in possibly upsetting the apple cart for something that might not happen.
As far as being expelled, that would depend on how conservative your chapter and school is. I seem to recall something about a sorority woman getting kicked out of her sorority after being in either Playboy or Penthouse (it sticks in my mind that she was a DZ). However, I think that she was from a small private "Bible Belt" type college, where naturally this kind of thing would be a big deal. I really believe it would depend how much of a deal your local chapter would make of it, if your nationals would pursue the situation. And hey....Farrah Fawcett is a Tri-Delt, and I haven't heard about her getting kicked out after her Playboy layout/nekkid painting HBO special... |
My senior year in college, Playboy was presenting layouts of a co-ed from each of the schools in our confrence. The co-ed selected from my university was in a sorority. While I'm not sure of if sorority afflications were included with the images, the woman was asked to return her pin from Nationals. The initial reaction was well publicized, since the woman didn't see her actions as unappropriate, while her sisters and her nationals did. Unforunitly, I don't know if she ever did return her pin. Oh and my university is a large state school.
As far as whether or not its grounds for expulsion. Examine your documents and traditions. Would your photos compromise the principles that your sisterhood is founded on? If you can answer yes to that, then you have your answer. |
From the different Greek boards on which I participate, the general information I've seen is that sorority women that pose for Playboy have had their membership revoked via the group's judicial process. Posing for Playboy is generally viewed as detrimental to the sorority's image.

I was involved with a situation similar to what is being discussed here, although on a MUCH LESS explicit level. My chapter creates a rush publication called Pikes Illustrated, and every cover picture since it's debut in 1985 had featured a photo of a bikini clad co-ed (usually a chapter Little Sister, Sweetheart or Dream Girl). However, a few years ago, we had a GREAT picture of a set of twins who were Chi O's. The picture was not explicit, degrading or otherwise distasteful -- it was simply the bikini-clad twins on the beach lying on their stomachs side by side. But the Greek Advisor at that time (who was female) objected to the picture and said it was unacceptable to use. We argued the point very heavily because she had not made any comments about the cover during our production period, only when we brough the final proof in for approval before printing and had spent hundreds of dollars on the photo shoot and four-color printing. Due to our arguement, she reported it to Chi O HQ and created a really big uproar for the girls. Finally, we reached a compromise and she allowed the photo to be used after we placed a "censored" bar across their cleavage area (we used the bar to put a headline across the cover about it being the tenth anniversary edition of the magazine).
After I met with a representative from Chi O HQ and the Greek Advisor and we discussed the matter, did the Chi O HQ ease off on the girls about the picture and agree that the photo was NOT contrary to the sorority's beliefs or imposed a negative image. No other girl before or after that one incident had ever had a problem with being our cover girl, and we had had Phi Mus, Tri-Delts, Alpha Gams, and KDs all on the cover at one time or another. However, after that discussion, we changed our policy and now use photos with both a Brother and a girl in it, sometimes they are in swimwear, sometimes not. |
Depending on your national, I would assume this would be frowned upon, no matter where you are. Good for you for being so self-confident, but national sororities almost never look nicely on these things. As for Farrah Fawcett, well, let's just say she was probably famous before she did it http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

If you are going to do it, please do not discrace your sorority. Even the smallest of things leads us to the bad wrap that sorority girls have.

OK...I found out today that one of my sisters was chosen to pose in the Girls of the SEC issue. This girl is our panhellenic rep. I've been told that she didn't use her real name and that she didn't mention the sorority. I was just wondering if anything can happen to her as far as her getting put on probation or getting kicked out of the sorority. Personally I really don't want her to be representing us on panhellenic now that I've found that out. Any suggestions as to how the sorority should handle it.

TigerGirl -
That is completely up to her chapter and their national policies. Even if she didn't use her real name or give her affiliation, every guy on campus that knows her is going to post it on the internet that she's a member of AAA or whatever. Her anonymity is going to be very, very short-lived. She had better prepare for the worst, in my opinion. Barbara Quote:

Ok..here is how I view it.
If you say the name of your sorority in the Playboy magazine, then yes, there should be something done about that. Not that i think its totally distasteful to pose for Playboy, but because it makes the sorority look like it has a whole bunch of chicks who like to get infront of the camera and show off their body. Because we all know that if one person does something, we think they are ALLLLL the same. It;s just human. However, if she did NOT use her real name, and did NOT mention what sorority she was in, then that means that she did think about the sororities' reputation...I know this is a confusing topic for me, but I dont think one should de-activate her if there is no information about the sorority in it. Thats just how I see it though. |
I am not sure what the issue is here . . . I am not about to try and circumscribe people's lives by foisting my viewpoints on them or interpreting the Ritual to limit their options of expression.
Playboy pays you to pose for their magazine just like any modeling type magazine does. The difference is you are wearing no clothes versus very little. The pictures in Maxim leave me more tantalized and body conscious because the outfits chosen emphasize sex even more than blatant nudity. Its like the appeal of a very intense sex movie like 9 1/2 weeks versus blatant porn. This being said I don't believe we should have the right to impose sanctions on people that are not breaking the law, hurting others, because it violates our comfort zone. Its ok for people do this . . . and not this. This comfort zone will invariably change from person to person. Playboy is a legitimate magazine that many people have used over the years to launch a modeling or acting career or simply to make extra money. I see no harm in this. Take care, James |
Haylee - I don't want to be mean but here is my point..
If you want to be a model... Glamor, Vogue, etc... are the places to go - Playboy - eh uh. I don't think so - I'd vote for Maxim before Playboy. If you are beatiful enough for Playboy- then you are beautiful enough for the quality magazines = hold out for something more "you" |

I say go for it. Playboy's college girls rock!!
|
I admit it, I'm female and I like reading my BFs Playboy magazines. I have to agree that, in comparison to the other magazines out there, it seems to be somewhat tasteful.
Still, I wouldn't think twice about jeopardizing my membership status. The college girls edition simply makes people easier to find, regardless if the girls lie about their college/sorority. It's not that big of a world out there anymore, and I'd bet money that nationals wouldn't be too proud of it, especially if she's an active. ------------------ "Talk doesn't cook rice."--Someone smart Visit Alpha Gamma Delta-Delta Sigma chapter! |
I am pretty sure that almost any national panhellenic chapter would revoke the membership of a woman who posed...the bottom line is this---whatever your personal beliefs about nudity/pornography/etc. generally speaking GLOs have in their purposes and mission extremely high standards of behavior/self respect/yadda yadda. Posing nude for a men's magazine just doesn't fit that mold. We had a situation when I was an active similar to this. One of the local dance clubs had an all-female revue (I believe it was topless) one or two nights a week, and there were t-shirts of each of the girls so guys could wear their favorite. There was quite a bit of promotion. One of our girls auditioned, and she certainly had the looks for it (most of our members did!!!) She was beautiful, long dark curly hair, pale blue eyes, dark complexion, great body----she probably would have made a lot of money, and she wanted to do it. But when the chapter found out it was uncertain how we should handle it. We took it to a higher level and were told she had to make her choice----Chi O or the dance revue. Thank goodness she chose Chi O....but this was just one example of this kind of case.

DON'T DO IT! It's not worth it in the long run! It compromises the integrity of being a Greek and contributes to the degradation and opression of women!!!
|
Didn't Playboy do a sorority girls special a few years ago? Did all of those girls get kicked out?
|
Did anyone hear that Amber (AGD) of Survivor is considering posing for Playboy... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif!!! check this out: http://www.tvguide.entertainment.aol...er/010420a.asp

LOL Iowa. I had read the same thing on AOL tonight. I wasn't sure if I should post it or not http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif.
Amber's an alumna of the Westminster College chapter, so she hasn't been a collegian since Spring 2000. In the article she makes some good points about how she "didn't want to be another Darva Conger and say no..then do it" and "wanting to see how much she's worth". I don't know our policy regarding posing nude. I also don't know Amber's status in the Fraternity (i.e. if she's an active alum with the Junior Circle). The key word now is CONSIDERING , and judging from what her friends have said about what kind of person she is, I'm sure she'll consider all sides (including AGD) before she decides to do anything. ------------------ "Talk doesn't cook rice."--Someone smart Visit Alpha Gamma Delta-Delta Sigma chapter and help some sisters out! |

I feel that it is your decision and what ever you choose you need to be able to face the concequences. I will leave you with a great saying that my big told me, and that Ive told my family...
(Assume your name is Amy and you are a XYZ) Once you join a sorority, you are no longer just Amy, you are Amy the XYZ. Basically saying that people know you by your sorority, and even if you dont mention it, and use a fake name, people are going to know its you and what affiliation you have. Be Careful!! And about Amber from Survivor... I live in Pittsburgh, and so does she (of course) and this one radio station always tried to call her when she first got kicked off... they had long talks with Ambers Dad! So this is going to be a big to do here! |

Amber doesn't live in the state of PA anymore. |
As far as I know, Amber's posing for Playboy was just an errant rumor and it's not going to happen. Playboy seems to like to feature the "girl of the moment" and Amber's initial 15 minutes of fame seem to have wound down. She did, however, appear in "Stuff" magazine a few months back. She looked beautiful and the pictures were tasteful (i.e. clothed!).
|
There have been sorority women from my school who posed in Playboy and they used fake names. However, they were easily recognizable 'cause, DUH!, they don't cover your face!!!! You will be noticed! I saw it myself and nearly fainted.
Anyway, the people in question were not active in their chapters at the time and so I don't know if any action was taken. If they were made to resign their membership nobody would have noticed since they hadn't been seen around campus a lot. I was panhellenic VP then, so I know there was no panhel stance on it other than "Holy crap, come look at this! Ha ha! It's so and so!". I don't their national even knew it was them. I would advise against posing in Playboy. Unless you plan on giving your sisters the money to pay them for the suffering they will endure when the word gets out, then you are only going to be taking money while causing your sorority grief. Just my opinion though. It's up to you. |
well, stop and think for a second and ask yourself WHY you want to even consider posing for playboy? because you want to break into modeling or acting? if thats the case i would suggest something a little classier...and less revealing unless you want to start a career in soft core porn. do you want to do it because it would just be fun and a great experience? if thats the case, weigh it against what you already have - being a member of your sorority, having a good relationship with your family, school, and friends. personally, i dont care...playboy is a tasteful magazine compared to most...but its still a nudy magazine. i would have a harder time trying explain my decision to my parents and sisters than taking my clothes off in front of a camera just for the experience.

Her parents probably still do live in PA.
You said "of course"- leading me to believe you were positive and it was matter of fact that Amber lived in Pittsburgh. |
Basically, it's your choice. But like everyone else has said, please weigh the value of being in Playboy against the dignity, class, and respect you and your GLO currently possess. Like it or not, your posing will likely negatively affect people's perceptions of you as well as the women you call your sisters.
I kinda feel like it's like getting a tattoo. So many college freshmen go out and do it, just because they can (not around Mom and Dad anymore, just let off the leash, etc). They end up getting something retarded and for the rest of their lives they're that kid with Marvin the Martian smoking a blunt between their shoulder blades. Playboy will still be accepting pictures in 2 years. Wait until you've graduated and begun to establish a life outside college. If you still want to do it then, you'll know that you wnt to do it for real, for you personally. Playboy isn't going anywhere. :) And this is my own personal opinion, but what if a member of your family who didn't know you were posing happened to pick up that issue? I for one stumbled across my GRANDFATHER'S cache of porn when I was 11... that forever ruled out any chance of EVER choosing that lifestyle. Him opening a magazine, seeing his granddaughter.... ewwwwwwwwwwwwww. |
haha
In november my leadership consultant came to visit. I asked her if the rumors were true that Judge Judy was a member of my house. She said no, but that we have a partial celebrity the November 2001 playboy centerfold. She funny thing is she is from achapter in PA. Isnt that where the originator of this topic is from? Anyway i guess it became a big issue, but the girl was- is a good member so it became a matter of free speech. Since she was a good member they didn't terminate her.
|
people think it is a bad thing to pose for Playboy but if you think about it what about the members who act slutty at fraternity houses sleeping with anyone( and eveyone knows about it in the Greek community, or the sisters-bros who get wasted everynight or high. I think there are a lot of actives who do a lot of bad things and if we are going to crack down then we need to get these members as well. I can guarantee i know at least five members who would get kicked out of my house.

Thanks, just what I wanted to see this morning. Let's talk about a bigger issue, those red shoes that girl above is wearing!
It would be intresting to see if the girl who started the question actually got in it or not. It sounds like she had already made her mind up so it matters not what we think, the pictures are there. |
