KAO Grand Convention 2012- Tucson AZ

Who is going? I already know that I will get to hang with AZTheta again, and (finally!) get to meet ThetaPrincess24. I'm also fairly certain that AmyKates will be there. ;)

Anyone else attending? Is this your first convention, or are you quite the veteran? This will be my 3rd convention, so I'm somewhere in the middle.

Use this thread for all things Grand Convention.

I started a Convention thread in March but no one responded :(

Oh Sorry! I guess that must have come out while I was on vacation. I didn't remember seeing one and didn't think to search.

Maybe now that registration is in full swing this topic will get a little more activity.

I thought that M had a good suggestion about avoiding the early afternoon flights due to turbulence. Of course, that tidbit of information came about AFTER I booked my 12:35 flight home. Oh, well.

I'm looking forward to convention, but I am looking just as much forward to meeting so many Thetas once I get to the Atlanta airport! I think there have been 30 or so Thetas on my flights out of ATL the last 2 go-rounds, since of course to go pretty much anywhere in the free world you have to connect thru there. One year we even had a Theta flight attendant- she was in shock when we all boarded in Miami for the trip back in 2008!

Good times.

AZTheta 04-09-2012 06:06 PM

See if you can change that return flight. You're still leaving early enough in the day. I thought you were leaving much later? Did I misread your itinerary?

With any luck, it'll be just hot as hades but no thunderstorms.

So excited that it's here again. Maybe we'll see AmyKates (ya think?) or kaokite? Wonder who else might show up? For sure this time I am doing the Lazy River.

Unfortunately it is just the 12:35 and then one that leaves at 6:20am. There is a 7:20am, but it has 2 stops. No flights after 12:35, but that is ample late as it doesn't land in Atl until 7:20pm local time. Then, of course, I still have a connecting flight after that.

I'm definitely in for the Lazy River. I will pack a gallon of sunscreen so that my insanely fair skin doesn't catch on fire. :o

I dont think there will be time for me to do the lazy river. As a voting delegate it looks like my schedule is going to be pretty packed. It doesnt appear there is a free afternoon anymore, just fun night.

ComradesTrue 04-09-2012 07:29 PM

^^ You may be fine. I was a delegate last convention and I did it twice. Once on free afternoon and once on Sunday morning before my noon flight. Are you on the same flight out as me?

Bring the suit, just in case! It is soooo relaxing!

The free afternoon is not on the Convention schedule at all this year for anybody is what I'm saying :).

My flight leaves Tuscon for Minneapolis at 1:15.

AZTheta 04-09-2012 07:46 PM

We will swim, the three of us, we will, we will, we will. Seriously. You WILL have time. I will be sure you do. Even if we have to do it in the middle of the night.

How fun! What hotel is the convention being held at? Have fun ladies!!!!

IrishLake 04-09-2012 10:11 PM

:( I'll make it there someday. It's so expensive, and I'll have to wait until my babes are older. I hope everyone has fun!

Thanks!

It will be at the JW Marriott, which is where we also had the 2010 Convention. While I love the opportunity to travel to different places, this particular resort did such a great job two years ago that I am glad that we are going back.

We will wait for you. They don't seem to be going away. :) Maybe you and that legacy can attend together in about 18 years.

What IrishLake said. Of course there might be a lottery victory between now and then but I'll keep my hopes on other better things.

Very cool! Our convention 2015 is back in AZ. I'm not sure if it is going to be in Phoenix or Tucson (as we have active chapters in both cities). I don't mind as I was born in raised in AZ.

I wish I could place where the Marriott is, but I am a Phoenix native not Tucson. I hope you have a wonderful time! Convention is always so much fun!

AZ-AlphaXi 04-10-2012 10:20 AM

^^^^ the JW Marriott is on the far west side of Tucson in Starpass

Blondie--I am sorry for this mishap with your post. I was trying to quote your post to reply and somehow edited it, and kept editing it because it didnt look right before I realized I hit the edit button instead of quote and since I am moderator when I kept editing, it ended up deleting your post. I'm so sorry!!! :(

No worries. I can just retype. I think it went something along these lines:

I hate that the cost of convention is so high, and it is obviously cost prohibitive for many of our members. I know that there are many individuals who really want to attend, but outside of being a voting delegates (i.e. have their costs covered by the Fraternity) it just isn't feasible. I do have to trust, however, that those in the position to plan these events have weighed the decision heavily and that there is sound reasoning for choosing the locations they do and pricing convention the way it is.

ThetaPrincess24 04-10-2012 04:45 PM

My original reply too Blondie's post was that if I wasnt a delegate I wouldnt be able to go this year due to cost.

The oldest son is in college. I dont know what my leadership role will be in two years but hopefully I'll be able to make it to the next one. Money may be tight then too because the daughter will enter college fall 2014 (and hopefully recruitment!!) and the oldest is planning on entering veterinary school fall 2014.

blackandgold 05-01-2012 01:28 AM

Five members from Eta Mu are going and are sooo excited! I wish I was but I'm graduating so I'll get my time as an alumna I think :)

ThetaPrincess24 05-14-2012 03:29 PM

43 days ladies!!! 43 Days until I see AzTheta again and finally meet Blondie93 for the first time!!

AZTheta 05-18-2012 07:05 PM

Convention registration maxed out and closed a day ahead of schedule. Hot times in the Old Pueblo ahead. So looking forward to seeing TP24 and B93, along with a host of others. And I don't care how busy you are, we are doing the Lazy River. No arguing.

AZ-AlphaXi 06-26-2012 12:40 PM

Safe travels to all the Theta's coming into Tucson this week and welcome!

AZTheta 06-26-2012 10:27 PM

:o...and... a truly AzTheta moment occurred this am. I went to the airport to pick up my College District Director.

24 hours early.

IrishLake 06-29-2012 01:26 PM

Zeta Sigma (Ohio Northern) got the Gold Kite award!

Sounds like something I would do when overworked.

Heard that the Gamma Phi/Texas Tech chapter got the Founders Award, so congrats to them! :)

ThetaPrincess24 07-08-2012 06:21 PM

My college chapter got the Bronze Kite Award and my alumnae chapter won the Black & Gold Award (big deal since this was our first Convention being represented).

I was happy to have met several Thetas from here at GC finally! :)
