So what do GCers listen to driving to and from work/school? NPR radio, iPod music, CDs, mixed music? Dead silence? :) I usually listen to a mixed playlist, but it's generally music like this: http://youtu.be/fJIzsHhOzow http://youtu.be/exCEcmLw-Hc http://youtu.be/TSVHoHyErBQ http://youtu.be/nvBR_aKU7tc http://youtu.be/qqIIW7nxBgc http://youtu.be/MEOrfKfyYCc http://youtu.be/o6uAyqJ23RI Just a few of my favs.http://i522.photobucket.com/albums/w...cing/Kitty.gif |
NPR. I'm an NPR addict.
But I DO have a bright pink hummer. How did you know? |
I listen to NPR, too.:D
|
NPR, or if I'm driving at night, I have some podcasts I like to listen to. Among them, The Moth, Stuff You Missed in History Class, Dan Carlin's Hardcore History (and his political show), Left, Right & Center, some Slate podcasts, etc.
NPR after 8 or 9 around here turns into a jazz/world music channel. |
an AM political station
|
NPR
Podcasts (mostly of NPR shows like Splendid Table, Wait Wait, or This American Life) Sirius XM -- On Broadway Sirius XM -- Laugh USA Sirius XM -- Coffee House Sirius XM -- Classic Vinyl |
Bob & the Showgram on G105.
I even use the proxy server at school and listen to it for the hour I'm at school before students arrive. :p |
Elliot in the Morning on DC101 before work, WTOP 103.5 on the way home (news, weather, traffic, etc). Traffic is such a huge thing in the DC metro area, you really need it updated every few minutes to figure out if your half hour commute is going to take 3-4 hours.
If I'm feeling up to some music, I'll pop in a cd. I have Marina and the Diamonds, Beach House, the Deftones, Crystal Castles and all sorts of weird stuff floating in my car. |
Morning - I will listen to any one of the local morning shows (mostly Top 40 or Urban)
Afternoon / Lunch / Ride home - I'll listen to my iPod My office is ~8 minutes from my house, though, so I don't get much radio time lol |
The majority of the time, I take public transportation, so I usually just listen to my personal music library on my iPhone or Pandora (usually my Beatles station).
On the rare occasions when I drive, I listen to local radio morning shows on the way in and news/sports radio on the way home (really, I only listen to the sports shows during the summer when it's all about the Sox). |
My commute is only about 15 minutes long, so I just listen to whatever is in my iPod. I always try to make it something upbeat going into work, and something more low-key when leaving. Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" is the last song I listen to before getting out of my car in the morning. The last song usually changes every couple months.
Oh, and if I hit the timing just right, on my way home, I'll listen to 103.5 KTU New York's The War of the Roses. If you don't know what it is, look it up. Hilarious. |
Local pop station in the morning, 700 WLW talk radio on the way home.
|
I don't drive, but I do run anywhere between 1-3 hours every day. I listen to a few favorite podcasts (This American Life, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, How to Do Everything, and Radiolab). I also have a subscription to Audible and get two credits a month to spend on audiobooks -- I just finished the A Song of Ice and Fire books and am starting work on the Stephen King Dark Tower series.
My commute is on public transportation and takes about 30 minutes, and I usually read my Kindle rather than wearing headphones. I work in a not-great area and two of my coworkers have been mugged for their iPhones while wearing headphones so far in 2012. |
It really depends on my mood. Usually in the morning I listen to J Powers and the morning crew on 100.3 (Detroit station). On the way home, it's usually XM Radio: channels I tend to stop at are:
8: 80s on 8 9: 90s on 9 10: The Pulse 72: On Broadway 13: Some lite radio station out of NYC 16 (I think): The Blend 31: Coffee House - cool acoustic versions of lots of different music And, I forget the new number for Alt Nation, used to be 47 but I think it's 36 now. It's all pre-programmed. Or I plug my ipod into my car and listen to a playlist, which could be anything from "girl songs" which includes Pink, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum and Bruno Mars to "musicals" which has all my musicals on it, to 70s stuff like John Denver to 80s bands- Journey, Queen, REO, etc. I have some 90s country music on my ipod also, like Garth Brooks and Reba. It totally depends on what fits my mood that day. I don't listen to rap or r&b or new country much.. or bluegrass kind of country. Sometimes I'll go to a jazz or classical station, sometimes comedy, sometimes news. |

I tried to find a really cool cruising gif, but that's all I could find.:o I like NPR, too. Diane Rehm is the best. She sounds like she's really old, but from what people have told me, she isn't. |

In the USA - BBC World Service
In the UK - BBC2 |
A rotation on Sirius/XM including Howard 100, 1st Wave, 80s on 8, E Street Radio, Classic Rewind, Classic Vinyl, Deep Tracks, On Broadway, NHL Home Ice (depends on time of day/live programming) and Underground Garage.
|
Press the search button, and when it lands on something worthwhile I hit the keep button (prevents the distracted driving of constant button-punching for good music/info).
|
I have no commute. I work from home. :D
Of course, the nice thing about working from a home office is that it's just me and my cat, so I can play whatever I want while I'm working - no need for headphones. So I usually run my favorite iTunes playlist, which includes a mix of Evanescence, Within Temptation, Linkin Park, and some other odds and ends. |

She really is fantastic, I think. Particularly impressive given that she didn't even go to college. |
NPR.
I live three miles from where I work which isn't enough time for audiobooks. |
Driving to work:
usually Tom Joyner or Rickey Smiley, depending on mood. Driving home: usually one of two sportstalk stations, or a CD |

I listen to Air1 or the local news talk station.

I usually listen to this walking around campus:
http://youtu.be/XqMTsdWcXw8 This in the dorm: http://youtu.be/16bRiH5zfOY This while driving: http://youtu.be/eyl3A_B7ppo (Possible NSFW) http://youtu.be/JksUpzWF7bI http://youtu.be/OtNChaprulw http://youtu.be/mimtJ1WAfYo http://youtu.be/FGAyjfwK-wI Ok I must stop now before I flood this forum lol |
When I'm not listening to my iPod, I also enjoy BBC World, Conservative Talk, and Liberal Talk, too. XM Radio is awesome, and for the price, it isn't a bad deal. When I bought my Jeep last summer, it came with 3 free months of XM Radio. I enjoyed it so much, that I decided to keep it. It's normally $12.95/month, but I decided on the 2-year plan, because it averaged out to be cheaper. Plus, they gave me an additional 3 free months. The quarterly plan is nice, too.

8 track tapes...
|
I am obsessed with my Sirius XM radio. It's usually on Cosmo Radio (Wake Up with Taylor is my absolute favorite) or 90s on 9, and Radio Margaritaville for the Buffett Buffet.
|
It depends on what mood I'm in. Mostly Hip Hop/Rap to and from work. Old school and new school.
|
Mostly/mainly jazz flavors, Christian music/traditional and jazz. I also really enjoy classical music.
Christian music I listen to/Huge Ben Tankard fan http://youtu.be/X9QK0JyzP8E http://youtu.be/A-U8srbTGsA Jazz Flavors I enjoy http://youtu.be/AG4mCRJf-Fw http://youtu.be/NOMqV2-1rhg Classical music I listen to: Some of my favorites. Huge Bach fan. http://youtu.be/eUtCC5VPwBs http://youtu.be/JxkRbhhnAzY ETA: When I'm at work, the designers are allowed to listen to music via iPod etc. I listen to only Classical music at work. It helps me with my ideas and designs. I've always sketched while listening to Classical music. |
Q102, a local top-40 radio station. I like to listen to upbeat music while I drive. I also sometimes play a Pandora station from my phone, usually Bon Iver or Mumford and Sons. I want to start listening to books on tape though. My commute is 45 minutes each way and sometimes I drive there and back twice in a day (so 3 hours of driving total). Books on tape would probably be a better way to spend my time, haha.
