Worst skit you ever had to perform in?

Agreed! This will be a good thread!
(I escaped dreadful skits by being Panhellenic v.p. and then president, but I'm sure many GCers will have tales to tell.

QUOTE: "Worst skit you ever had to perform in" would be a good thread. I remember one year, back in the 80s, we did a Best Little Whorehouse in Texas lip-synch skit. It boggles my mind that anyone involved in recruitment planning thought THAT was a good idea! I remember wondering "how did I get roped into doing THIS?", and also having some serious concerns about the possibility of a wardrobe malfunction! Hmmm...I wonder if I still have that feathery boa?

I'll get some popcorn, sit back, and wait for you all to chime in. :D

I was Wink Martindale in a "Tic Tac Chi-O" skit.

(and yes, amazingly, we did pledge quota)

Not a skit, but horrid none the less. Years ago (close to 20), someone higher up in the organization thought it would be a good idea to issue a rush video and instructions. The video was introduced at Convention for all to see. Sounds good so far, right? The video was done by one of our southern chapters who held rush during the winter months. It was thought, at the time, that all of the chapters would incorporate this theme into their rush plans.
The video was a Christmas theme rush party. Complete with velvet dresses. Complete with Christmas songs rewritten for the rush party.
At this time, I was a collegian, and our chapter advisor was Jewish. Strike one. She was horribly offended, and I couldn't blame her.
Kansas has rush in August. Ever been to Kansas in August? Not the time you want to wear a velvet dress. Strike two.

The video was sent out to all of the chapters, but it died a quick death, thankfully.

I was a dancing fish in a Gilligan's Island theme party which included the history of the sorority set to the theme of Gilligan's Island. This would have been funny in the 60s or 70s when Gilligan's island was on TV - in the 90s it was just awkward and weird.

Too bad YouTube wasn’t around then. :D

Transferring from the other thread, although I wasn't in this skit:

My sophomore year we did a skit based on a PNM going through recruitment and having a hard time deciding which chapter to join. That night, she has a dream sequence where she is visited by her Rho Chi/stylist who brings a rack of clothing that represents different aspects of sorority life: a sisterhood scarf, community service something, and my favorite: GOOD TIMES PANTS.

It wasn't funny. It didn't really make any sense. It made a weirdly sexual reference that the writers clearly didn't get, but the rest of us did. It did have some good dance interludes, though.

Any hackneyed Broadway sampler you have ever sung or viewed.

We did do a Christmas-themed round and it was one of our best rounds. We had a few Jewish women in our chapter and we specifically talked with them about it before making the decision to run with it. I do think I lost a rush crush over it (she was Jewish), but overall the response to the theme was overwhelmingly positive. We didn't wear velvet though. :)

I was thinking about how in the seventies, almost every rush skit was about a clueless rushee who was trying to discover a home and after meeting several wonderful ABCs or XYZs, she finds her real home. Think Alice meeting various Wonderland characters who show her why she should be an ABC or Dorothy doing the same in Oz. If it wasn't that, it was a takeoff on a musical like Carousel or Showboat with sorority terminology inserted.

I did play a cancan dancer in Pi Phi Showboat my senior year (a certain photo of that kept showing up on Facebook last year :o ). What on earth the cancan had to do with Pi Phi, I can not remember; that's just what you expected with skits back then.

33 is right, philanthropy should be replaced before skit is but I have no clue what they could replace either one with.

Sciencewoman 03-07-2012 08:58 PM

Every skit I was in left a lot to be desired. Don't ask me why I never learned to stay in the audience.

Sophomore year we did South Pacific. I was not even familiar with that musical, and I'm pretty sure none of the PNMs were, either. I remember bending over and mussing up our hair while we sang, "I'm gonna wash that man right outta my hair!" Which only served to leave us all with bad hair.

Junior year I transferred and had already made affiliation/move-into-the-house arrangements. The first night on campus, the overzealous Rush Chair tells me, "We're doing a Disney theme. We've all been working all summer to put our costumes together. You need to come up with a Disney-themed costume NOW!!!" I paired a black formal dress with Snow White Evil Queen make-up. I carried a basket with a "poisonous" apple. We all came down the stairs in our crazy Disney get-ups. I distinctly remember who was dressed as Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, and Peter Pan. They all looked GREAT...the rest of us, not so much. There are only so many Disney princesses to go around. Some people got stuck being the dwarves, cute animals, etc.

Senior year was the aforementioned Best Little Whorehouse in Texas theme...a 180 degree turn from Disney the year before.

I've heard a lot of "omg the skit that year was SO bad" stories from my sisters who went to other schools. So funny. Then I promptly thank God that my alma mater didn't (and still doesn't) have them. lol.

In terms of what we have instead, we have House Tours/Sisterhood. They're like 50 min long, you tour the house and watch some sort of slideshow/video from that chapter.

We do however have Philanthropy day, and I have heard of and experienced some pretty bad craft projects in my day. So it evens out.

aephi alum 03-07-2012 11:10 PM

At the start of my junior year, we did a fairytale-themed skit during open houses. I was a fairy and had these stupid cardboard "fairy wings" taped to the back of my shirt. Before each party started, I was to put a handful of glitter in the palm of my hand, make a fist, and keep my hands behind my back as the PNMs came in and the skit began. Then came my big line - something like "This is a magical land! Would you like some fairy dust?" at which point I was supposed to bring my hands out from behind my back, open my fist, and blow the glitter towards the PNMs. Only problem was, my hands were so sweaty that the glitter stuck to my palm! After the first party, the rush chair took me aside and said, "Lose the fairy dust." (The PNMs got a good chuckle, though. I think it drove home the point that we were just as nervous as they were.)

Cheerio 03-08-2012 08:42 PM

I had only to 'perform' as a rushee in this skit by watching it. XYZ sorority members dressed like Ronald McDonald, the Burger King, Wendy from Wendy's, and the clown from Jack-in-the-Box. I believe each character represented a house on campus: one house had colors resembling a character's burger home (there's one on every corner nationwide); one had a rep as very flirtatious women (have it your way); one house pledged mostly redheaded women (and perhaps silly hair-dos?); and the house performing the skit was lots of funfunfun (please join us, we make poor jokes about other houses in our skits). Quite an unusual method of rushing potential members. Oh, and the Ronald McDonald NEVER smiled the WHOLE TIME she performed/spoke with individual rushees.

Someone needed to show these girls this clip from Elf!

Um, I totally remember that Christmas skit! That was the skit they performed when I went through rush. In September. In a tent outside.

The next year we switched to a Brady Bunch themed skit.

carnation 03-09-2012 09:49 AM

I once saw pictures of a Phi Mu Christmas skit. I don't know what the plot was but oh, the decorations were gorgeous--white lights everywhere and it looked all wintry.

honeychile 03-09-2012 01:46 PM

I can't believe that I'm even admitting it, but I was a bootlegger for a Roaring Twenties theme - terrible, terrible skit!

We also did a Cinderella based theme, but it was great! The Fairy Godmother used a glittered plunger for a magic wand & spoke in a Brooklyn accent, the pumpkin coach was a laundry hamper on wheels, and I was Bouncing Bunny, the Narrator! We got a 90% return rate on that one!

JayhawkAOII 03-09-2012 02:36 PM

I think the Christmas thing wouldn't have been so bad if it had been more "Winter Wonderland" than "Birth of Jesus". A winter theme could have been pulled off in August.
The worst part of it was that all of the chapters had to buy the rush package. There was no choice if it would fit in with the campus demographic or not. I remember we got it, looked at it, and decided we would stick with what we had planned to do. So we were stuck with this package of stuff that was useless but had to pay for it anyway. A number of the chapters on the coasts, if I remember correctly, felt the same way and those packages soon started collecting dust in storage closets.

FSUZeta 03-16-2012 08:23 AM

My chapter did an awful skit loosely based on, as near as I can guess, those old, old silent films where the villian, dressed in black top hat and cape, kidnaps sweet Nell, the virginal heroine of the piece. Nell is rescued by some Dudley Do-Right character named "Ichosea Zeta Blue. I have no memory whether the villian was another house trying to steal the girl away from ZTA or someone trying to keep the girl from going greek. It was so corny, with over the top characters, and as a pnm I was embarrassed for the girls in the skit-as a sister I was embarrassed that the chapter still did it. I think by the time I was a senior we had scrapped the skit.

Wow...yeah, no way that would have been a good theme idea where I went to school. Not only was AOPi one of the main predominantly Jewish sororities, but almost all houses had a large portion of Jewish members. Of course a large percentage of PNMs coming through would have been Jewish, as well, and probably would have found that theme less-than-appealing, I’m sure!

sdtennisgal 04-04-2012 08:14 PM

I still remember being involuntarily assigned to be one of the "tuxedo dancers" in a take-off of the Marilyn Monroe "Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend" number. On one of the hottest days in August, six of us had to don faux tuxedos (and they were wool), pull our 80's teased hair into tight buns, wear ill-fitting top-haps, and twirl around one of our cutest, petitist, blondest members as she warbled modified lines of that classic. Yes, we were six of the tallest girls in the chapter and I am not a gifted dancer. Everytime I hear that song, I still feel resentful.

How about just talking with the PNMs more? Wouldn't that be a novel concept? Getting to the know the women a little bit better? I think philanthropy round should just be a video/talk about the sorority's philanthropy.

I was never the member who loved recruitment. I have to be in the "right" mood to force myself to socialize with people I don't know. I was a good recruitment chair, because I just had to do the work to get the parties planned and executed.

The only skit I ever remember us doing was Grease. It was fun.

If you have open houses, skits, house tours, and prefs, doesn't that make for a good four rounds? Assuming you have a house, of course. Otherwise? Yeah, just talk more.
