"GCB: Good Christian B******"

Series premiere was Sunday night, March 4.
What did you think?
Overall I thought it was hilarious!
*Nobody should take it seriously...it's farce.
*Kristen Chenoweth loves chewing scenery, and does it well. I'm guessing every episode will have a church scene, with a chance for Kristen to sing?
*Annie Potts is a love, but she seems to be channeling Dixie Carter. Or maybe it's just so hard for me to take her out of "Designing Women?"

HQWest 03-05-2012 01:22 AM

I didn't watch the whole thing but between GCB and Big Rich Texas - OMG.
I kinda thought GCB was Desparate Housewives moves to Highland Park.....

DSTRen13 03-05-2012 07:09 AM

I liked it alright, but haven't we seen this storyline about a thousand times already ...?

IrishLake 03-05-2012 07:40 AM

I didn't see it, but wondered what GCB meant!

LXA SE285 03-05-2012 11:25 AM

Loved it! My only real quibble is that Leslie Bibb (Amanda) seems too young compared with the others.

Annie Potts looks amazing for 60. Kristin Chenoweth, God love her, looks like a Slim Jim in a Kim Zolciak wig.

Still BLUTANG 03-05-2012 12:05 PM

loved it, thought it was great. I'll definitely be adding it to my playlist for the ABC ipad app...

most likely I wont catch it anymore in real time b/c it conflicts with my true sunday night love, Army Wives.

knight_shadow 03-05-2012 12:16 PM

They've been talking about this show up here, since it takes place in the city that I work in. I want to check out at least one episode because of that.

FSUZeta 03-05-2012 01:37 PM

i enjoyed it-i think they got the highland park, neiman shopping socialites down pat. i think it needs some time to gel, though.

This, and I also wonder how it will do over a long haul. It's the kind of concept I tend to think can work better with the British-style series -- where there's no expectation of the show going on indefinitely, but instead there's a story arc that runs through a predetermined number of episodes and then it's done.

But anything that has Annie Potts and Kristin Chenowith in roles like this is great.

AGDLynn 03-05-2012 07:09 PM

LOVED IT!

As for Annie's role, part of the role was based on Annie's mom who the writer knows and Dixie Carter.

Sorry but to me, Kristen seems to be "aging" faster than the others!)

Always AlphaGam 03-05-2012 08:10 PM

It really is a "Mean Girls" for us older folks. ;)

I love KC, but she is six years older than Leslie Bibb, who is supposed to be the same age. Kristen is really thin and as you age, your face tends to hollow out a bit anyway, compared to the fuller cheeks that younger people have (hence the reason why all these nitwits are getting those really generic looking cheek implants, which don't look natural at all). She's also pretty tan (looks like it's from the sun), which we all know ages your skin.

I'm really surprised that they seemed to play up Kristen's petite body structure. She's only 4'11", and just about everything else I have seen her in, she's been in crazy heels to make her look more homogenous in height. She seemed crazy short compared to all of the other characters, even when the scene showed her in some tall wedges.

The show was entertaining enough, but it needs to be careful of developing caricatures instead of characters.

And I believe that "GCB" stands for "Good Christian Bitches".

I think that's just for the show, but it accentuates how thin she is.

AGDLynn 03-06-2012 07:27 PM

Hmm....no one has mentioned what sorority their character is in yet! Maybe next week's episode ;)

This show's title was changed to "Good Christian Belles" before it aired (according to Wiki).

I didn't get to watch but I ADORE the Cheno! I'll catch it on Hulu or something.

IndianaSigKap 03-06-2012 07:37 PM

I enjoyed the first episode...but mostly because of Annie Potts. I love her character.

I enjoyed the show, but definitely agree with the above criticisms. I'm interested to see where it goes.

I was totally thinking this. I vaguely remember someone here posting an article from Texas Magazine from the '70s talking about the personalities of the top groups in Texas. I'm sure we could guess from that article.

Kappamd 03-07-2012 08:32 PM

I just watched this today.

After my Highland Park experience last month, all I can say is "yep." Unfortunately, some of the characters reminded me a little too much of some of my family members.

Sciencewoman 03-07-2012 09:12 PM

Kristin Chenoweth was awarded Gamma Phi Beta's Carnation Award at the 2010 Convention, which is a very high honor given to sisters for remarkable professional accomplishments.

LXA SE285 03-19-2012 11:13 AM

"Thank you, Texas Chili Council, thank you."

thetalady 03-19-2012 12:57 PM

LOVE this show!!! It is far closer to reality in the Park Cities part of Dallas than any of the other dreck-ful "reality" shows based in Dallas.

No, this is not going to be a show where we celebrate their 100th episode, but certainly a not-terribly-guilty pleasure while it lasts for me. :D

dreams2reality 04-24-2012 09:26 AM

This show seems to have gotten better or maybe I'm getting used to the characters. They have the actors, will just have to keep the writing up.

Started watching because Kristen was in it and loved Annie since Designing Women, but Cricket is my favorite right now.

Sciencewoman 04-24-2012 11:06 AM

I think this show is a hoot! I'm really liking it.

TPARose 04-30-2012 05:53 PM

I definitely think the show is evolving as the season goes on, I'm liking it more and more. My favorite part from last night's episode: The Doberman's named "Tony" and "Romo".

Right up there with a son named Landry. And I agree about how the show is getting better.

But I swear, if some prop person on the set doesn't figure out soon that they keep putting the Texas flag on the pole upside down . . . .

Sciencewoman 04-30-2012 07:23 PM

I didn't notice the dogs' names or the flag issue!

I did notice that both of the two new "love interest" guys are played by actors whose characters were killed off in True Blood last year.

I have a friend who works on the show, not in props, so I'll pass that along.

I haven't been a dedicated watcher since I don't have broadcast television, but there are a lot of little things that put me into giggle fits. I know some of it is specific to Texas, even Dallas, but it is spot on about dynamics in groups of people who believe they are part of a certain echelon of society.

The flag is always in the background -- for instance there's always a Texas flag in the church fellowship hall. I first noticed a few episodes ago that the flag was hung so that the red bar was above the white bar (like in the North Carolina flag) instead of below the white bar, as it should be for the Texas flag. Now it's gotten to be like a game -- every time I see one in the background I have to look and see if they got it right. I wonder if they keep moving the same flag and pole from set to set.

Defintely realized the butcher was Lafayette's boyfriend ( can't remeember his name), but who was the other one?

Jesus was his name.

The horse stud guy who Cricket is interested in is the same guy who played "Cooter" (Lol) the werewolf.

I'm thinking that both of these actors are probably more comfortable with their new character names.

The finale is Sunday, I'm not sure if it was picked up for another season, but hopefully it will be correct in the future.

In this week's Entertainment Weekly, this show was on a list of shows that are in trouble as far as hopes for renewal. But unless ABC has something else up their sleeve as a “replacement” for Desperate Housewives, they really should give GCB another season to find its footing. I was also disappointed that PanAm never really took off (pardon the pun)- I loved that show.

Sciencewoman 05-02-2012 10:15 AM

I watched Pan Am for the first few episodes, and then stopped. I just lost interest. When you DVR something, and then never get around to watching it, it's not a good sign.

I have to admit -- that's been us and Glee: Season 3. We haven't watched a single episode yet, so I think we're just going to delete them.

chi-o_cat 05-02-2012 12:05 PM

We have a rule- if we've DVRed more than 2 episodes of a show and still haven't watched them, we just delete them.

DrPhil 05-12-2012 10:24 PM

ABC cancels GCB.

IrishLake 05-12-2012 10:29 PM

I'm a little pissy about The River, Awake, and Harry's Law getting cancelled too.
