Bush is coming to ECU (woo-hoo)

Hey fellow Pirates, how do you feel about our "elected" leader, George W. Bush, visiting our campus on Wednesday?

dzsweetiee 04-09-2001 10:45 PM

I think it's awesome!

DeltAlum 04-10-2001 12:09 AM

This is refreshing. It's nice to see people getting excited about having a President visit a campus.

Since I've been in commercial TV News (TV director) since college in the late 60's, I've gotten somewhat jaded. I've televised every president from Nixon through Clinton -- and after a while dealing with the Secret Service, White House Communications Agency, local cops, etc. becomes a real pain -- and you start thinking of a presidential visit that way. A Pain. One President even visited the facility I worked for which made the planning that much more intense.

I hope that the security measures (street closures, etc.) aren't a problem for you and that you maintain the excitement of having someone of this stature visit your campus.

Enjoy the event. It really is neat the first time around.

kdgirlie 04-10-2001 12:19 AM

there is an anti bush rally on fifth st. starting at ten for anyone interested

IowaHawkeye 04-10-2001 12:28 AM

Kdgirlie - now tha's wher ei'd be if i was anywhere near ECU! i didn't vote for him, i don't like him, and the way things are going right now, i don't see myself liking him at all over the next four years http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

kdgirlie 04-10-2001 12:39 AM

i wish I could be there but I can't miss anymore classs

amycat412 04-10-2001 01:00 AM

I agree Iowa!

prospectiverushee 04-10-2001 01:06 AM

His dad is going to be the commencment speaker here on May 18th

orchid2 04-10-2001 01:20 AM

Pardon me for being uninformed, but does either one of his daughters go to school there?

AlphaChiGirl 04-10-2001 02:33 AM

Naw, Dubya's twin daughters go to Yale and UT-Austin.

Yeah, if I were at ECU, I'd be rockin' the anti-Bush rally. He was selected president and it's an honorable position, I guess. Didn't vote for him (and damned glad I didn't), although my absentee ballot was probably screwed up some way by the corrupt, partisan, government officials in Florida. What he's done so far scares the living daylights out of me. The trouble is...it's not him, it's his tacticians. I am reminded of what a doctor from PP told me..."Bush my be personally stupid, but he's surrounded by some of the world's smartest political strategists".

Have any of you had an experience with a big speaker like the President, or anyone controversial, come to campus? We had Al Sharpton last year, but it was around finals and everyone was too exhausted to protest. Tommy Thompson came a few weeks ago, and there was a pretty big group protesting.

ElleDelta3 04-10-2001 07:22 AM

AlphaChi
Where do you go to school? I am from and go to The University of Wisconsin Madison, where Tommy was state Gov. I am not surprized that there were anti Tommy Thompson rallies...he is too conservative and is Anti schools, despite the fact that his wife is a teacher. He put a salery cap on Teachers wages...that is crap. It is so amusing that he has a post in the Bush Administration because Donna Schalala, one who held this same position in the Clinton Administration, was also from Wisconsin, she was our school chancelor...What has this world come to.....Bush as president, what a joke.

ztafairy 04-10-2001 08:19 AM

I just don't understand why Bush is coming to ECU of all schools. That's just odd to me. Is he also going to other schools around the U.S. or is this it? I personally don't plan to attend his talk. Plus the Arena is going to stink from all those sniffing dogs going through there looking for bombs and stuff. He visited where my sister works a few months ago while he was campaigning and she said that those dogs stunk up the whole entire office.

So is this protest for real? I would love to join you guys but I have to work. I know a lot of the faculty do not like him at all. The only reason I would want to go is to say I've seen a President in my lifetime. But I think I'll wait for the next Democratic President to come into office.

kdgirlie 04-10-2001 10:21 AM

the protest is real, I really wish I could go
I heard he was coming because of the flood, and supposely he is unvailing a plan to help

dzsweetiee 04-10-2001 10:43 AM

Why can't everyone just be happy that ECU, a medium sized public school in NC is getting a nationally respected speaker? I mean, if anything, at least we are getting the publicity, and you never know, it might actually help out the post flood situation.

ztafairy 04-10-2001 10:45 AM

If he's coming to talk about the flood, he's a little too late. It was 1 1/2 years ago. I can't believe it's been that long! It seems like it was just a few months ago! Anyway, in the paper today, it says he's coming to talk about his proposed budget and the impact it will have on colleges and universities. But it would be nice to get assistance from him for the small group who were flooded out and who still live in FEMA trailers. They could use the help.

shadokat 04-10-2001 11:13 AM

Ok, ignorance is bliss, but what is ECU?

ztafairy 04-10-2001 02:07 PM

shadokat,

ECU stands for East Carolina University. It's in Greenville, North Carolina.

pirate00 04-10-2001 02:38 PM

I know I'll be at the anti-Bush rally tomorrow. I'm so tired of all the hype over Dubya I could scream. But on the plus side, the weather that has taken over Grenville is SUPERB!!! Think I'll go fly a kite.

shadokat 04-10-2001 05:01 PM

Thanks ztafairy http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I think it would be interesting just to go hear what he had to say. After all, didn't he win North Carolina in the election?

kittie 04-10-2001 05:55 PM

Wow...and I thought I was just about the only greek on ECU's campus who wasn't hardcore Republican.

I don't plan on attending the anti-Bush rally because I don't think it's necessary but I won't be attending the actual event either. I do think it's great publicity for us to have the president speaking at our school (even if it's not a president I'm particularly proud of). Hmm...on second thought, I'm glad people are protesting this because it's about time there was some political action on this campus. I just hope there's actually something of substance to be protesting.

Miami1839 04-10-2001 06:47 PM

I'm gonna rain on all the anti-Bush's party LOL But sorry to say I wont be at ECU. I am a BUSH SUPPORTER THOUGH. GO DUBYA! I second DeltAlum, BE SAFE. BUSH definitely picked a nice hot spot to make an appearance. Especially one of the biggest party schools in the nation. I think it was listed in Playboy if I'm not mistaken. I had a great time once on a road trip there with a few of my Brothers. We did Halloween and it was a blast where they block off all the streets. Our chapter closed there some time ago http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif But we had our fun with friends from there. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Great Memories.

Kevin

dzsweetiee 04-10-2001 08:21 PM

Yes, another Bush supporter! And nothing wrong with a little fun at our Halloween either......maybe Jenna will come down, isn't she greek at Austin?

AKA_Monet 04-10-2001 08:25 PM

I hate to be a hater, but I think Dubya has sum pimp skillz... Not as much as the P-Funk All Stars Bill Clinton, though. But skillz nonetheless... Better skillz than Gore, I tell ya'. I'm just waitin' for the Bushocomixz to start tricklin'--that's all.

kdgirlie 04-10-2001 09:54 PM

supposely all the weirdos are out in g-ville a girl that works at the ramada said that a man was arrested by the secret service there. I am definately anti-everything bush

DeltAlum 04-11-2001 12:18 AM

Deja Vu...

This is like stepping back into the sixties.

Whether you're for or against...Be safe.

AlphaChiGirl 04-11-2001 01:09 AM

ElleDelta3, I go to Brown in Rhode Island. Brown is fairly liberal (okay, VERY liberal) and anti-Bush, and I think all 3 of the school's Republicans were holding a counter-protest. My school cracks me up.

AKAMonet, no one could ever top Slick Willie in the pimpin' skills, especially not some former cheerleader. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Best of luck with Dubya's visit. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

ztafairy 04-11-2001 02:39 PM

I don't think that an anti-Bush rally is necessary, if you ask me, but it's their right to do so. I'm not totally anti-Bush but I don't like what the Republican party stands for. I think I'll stick with the liberal side of politics.

I think it's great publicity for Greenville to have a President come and speak. I hope he checks out the flood areas and gets us even more assistance than we've already received. That would be nice. There are already a ton of people lined up to hear him speak tonight. Too bad they'll be sitting for three hours on the hard bleachers of the Arena waiting for him to arrive. Ha, ha!

LexiKD 04-12-2001 11:37 AM

I saw about 4 kids with posters against Bush...a big rally huh?

By the way, no matter what you feel about him, he is OUR President and he deserves a little respect!
Greenville nevers gets any PR and this was all over NC news PLUS today he is visiting the flooded areas to see what has been done, so I think he's doing more than his fair share!

kdgirlie 04-12-2001 06:52 PM

I am respectively disagreeing with my sis.
Being an american citizen doesn't mean you have to respect the President. And if you believe that he is a primative level of political puppetry than you can say so. Personally I did not attend the anti-bush rally... because I would rather pass my classes. But if I could have been there I would have. Bush is steadly decreasing our enviromental protect and his tax plan which is denouced by the leading economist in our nation is most likely to only increase inflation.
Ok I am off my liberal soap box.

LexiKD 04-12-2001 10:22 PM

I understand that many do not like him, but when does the entire country like the president?
He does his job, which I know I couldn't do, so I give him the respect he deserves.
I'm a registered independent but it helps that I voted for him! I don't agree with all he does but I would agree with Bush more than Gore, but I would still respect Gore if he had won.

33girl 04-12-2001 11:36 PM

Re respecting the president, I don't think that holding an organized, peaceful rally saying that you disagree with his policies is disrespectful. Disrespectful is throwing eggs and the like.

Honestly, I think that from the 60's on (and probably before that, there were a lot of FDR & Truman haters) that anytime a prez appears in public, especially at a university, there's a contingent protesting his presence. This is nothing new.

chloeishere 04-12-2001 11:45 PM

I was actually discussing this the other day about how disrespectful we are of the office of presidency. Back in the old days, way before I was born, there was a respect that is missing today. Now, we have this horrible show, "That's my Bush," nightly jokes, and just an overall hateful attitude. I think that the previous president just dragged his reputation and our country's through the mud. It's sad that people refer to him as a "playa." He's our president not some side show. I'm an independant, and I still have some respect for the office of presidency.

AlphaXiGirl 04-12-2001 11:57 PM

I agree with others that have said that you don't have to agree 100% with someone to respect them.

I believe that the President should be respected... I also believe that teachers, law inforcement officers, and parents should be respected. I think a lack of respect for people in general is one of the biggest reasons for the problems that we have today.

I think Greenville should welcome the extra attention that comes with a Presidential visit. Be mature, act honorably, and show the best side of your community. But I'm probably a little bias - I happen to like the guy.

LexiKD 04-13-2001 12:03 AM

I agree!

Miami1839 04-15-2001 06:57 PM

Hey Thanks dzsweetie http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yeah, I think Jenna is Greek at Austin. That sounds like a nice idea. I know her mom is a Theta Alum and VP Dick Cheneys wife is a Theta Alum also. One of my brothers, Bob Grand, is one of the President's advisors. I definitely am a big fan of the President and I think he handled the China situation beautifuly. He might not be liked by all, but I strongly agree with what Alpha Chi said. We as a country should respect our leaders even though we may not agree with them. Sometimes its easy to play arm chair quarterback too when your not in the person's shoes. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

pledgetrainer2 04-16-2001 08:51 AM

Respect is earned-so that goes for the president, too. We vote for the office, so we have the right to express our opinion of what he is doing, at all times. By expressing our opinion, we affect what he does do, I would hope. That is the only way those of us who did not vote for him will affect how he does his job. I don't like a lot of the things he stands for and will express that every time that I have a chance. I think that it is my American responsibility, not disrespect.

ztafairy 04-16-2001 01:40 PM

I totally agree with you pledgetrainer!

LexiKD 04-17-2001 02:42 PM

All my girls from G-Vegas are fighting with me, even my old roomie!
Anyway, I never said that opinons were disrespectful, I meant that he is our President and no matter if you like the guy or not he is here for at lesat the next four years and does a job that none of us ran for, so maybe to think before you speak. I think some things can be said tactfully and not down right rude. I have said it before concerning opinons of chapters at your campus and I feel this is the same thing, you can say whatever you want, but that doesn't mean you should.
The reason I even said anything was Greenville never gets PR and Bush gave us as much as the flood did, so I think to be greeted with open arms would have been awesome, even if it was just to say thanks for the PR, maybe the PR could help all of us, ECU needs more students and our Greek System most definitly needs more PNMs!
So, anyway it turned out fine, Bush has moved on to other business and so have I.

ztafairy 04-17-2001 03:36 PM

I'm not fighting with you Lexi! I love you! I'm just not a big fan of the Republic party, that's all. But I do respect Bush and I do agree that ECU needs the publicity. It's good to have it in a somewhat small city like Greenville. I hope you're doing well Lexi!
