Phi Mu

alright well since people have been getting feedback on different chapters of different sororities, I thought I'd ask one..........What are the Phi Mus like on your campus? And please feel free to be as honest as you'd like:D  :p :)

LexiKD 11-30-2001 04:56 PM

We did not have Phi Mu at ECU, but I hear they are strong at UNC-Wilmington.

DukeBlue 11-30-2001 05:28 PM

There are no Phi Mus at Duke.

VSUPhiMu 11-30-2001 05:34 PM

Phi Mu is having an awesome year at VSU in Georgia! One of our sisters was just named Homecoming Queen, as was last year's. We initiated 22 new girls, and are the current Greek Week champions. I am SO proud to be a Phi Mu!!

Well now that I'm no longer dating a Phi Mu, (it was just a bad situation), and i've been here a while I can now answer this question.

Phi Mu here at UNL is kinda the Invisible sorority. No one really hear's that much about them. Part of this stems from the location of their house on campus--it's not on greek row so it's not a part of a lot of the intergreek shenanigans (composite stealing, serenades, etc.) They have a reputation for being a house that is for the atypical (or maybe just poor) sorority girl. No Kate Spade bags, or tiffany bracelets. I know that my ex chose it b/c of she enjoyed quote "that when I went in there I didn't get that 'ohhh look at my manicured nails' attitude I got at the other houses". That sums it up pretty well. Further b/c they arent' the ugliest, or the most gorgeous, and they are middle of the pack in grades, they don't stand out. Apparently the beta's haven't had a social function with them in 3 years--no froshes, sophs, or joint parties--nothing, although we will have a frosh this year b/c their new member social chair is a sophomore who rushed this year and she has a lot of friends in our sophomore class.

I guess in all honesty they have kind of a second tier reputation at least with the Betas. They definetly arent' a house that we feel we NEED to do a function with, and I guess they feel the same way.

DU's have an interesting tradition that involves the Phi Mu's here. PM me if you would like to hear; it is pretty funny.

BrownEyedGirl 12-01-2001 02:05 AM

We don't have many Phi Mu chapters in SC; although I would love to have Phi Mu colonize here at Clemson! My friend is a Phi Mu at C of C (one of two chapters, I think, in the state), and while they are the smallest on campus, their size allows them to be VERY close. The girls I have met really embody sisterhood. I have met and heard a lot of good things about many Phi Mu chapters in GA as well!

PhiMuJennaJen20 12-01-2001 03:58 PM

Phi Mu's @ Westminster are having a great year so far. Campus ceiling is 65 members...and we have 64! We're so proud!

Honestly, Phi Mu is bigger in the south than it is up here in the north. On campus, we're very involved though. Always out doing stuff. And we have quality ;) formals and date parties. WOO!

maggieaxid 12-03-2001 01:33 PM

Honestly, the Phi Mu's at Elon are annoying. No offense to any Phi Mu's out there because I understand every chapter is different and I know and am friends with a few Phi Mu's I really like, but they also admit that them, as a whole, are annoying and a little obnoxious.

Granted, every sorority on Elon's campus has their own quirks as to why the other chapter's don't like them. And I'll admit, my chapter is considered loud, party-hard, and have a tendancy to be also obnoxious. And i think for the most part, the other 6 sororities on elon's campus don't really care that much for phi mu. The main reason being, is that the Phi Mu's are always with themselves. Like, if you put 5 members from the 7 sororities on campus, for the most part everyone would mingle....everyone has friends in the other chapters except for the Phi Mu's. They would stand there in their group and act like they were better than everyone else. Which noone ever understands because, that doesn't even fit their "stereotype" (and yes, elon has lots of stereotypes!!!! I am not just saying that to be rude, thats reality there.) This kind of behavior is usually called "Being Pink" or a "Pink person" and thats used derogatorily throughout the campus. Like I could have a sister who is getting a little out of control cheering or getting overly cliquey and we would be like "Dude, stop being so Pink!". Even my friends in other GLO's use that term too.

They also do things like if we are at a greek assembly for anti-hazing or drinking things they will break out in a cheer. Why? Noone knows why. Like we'll be all coming in, sitting in our assigned places and all of a sudden all the phi mu's will come in wearing letters, their new girls in their "i love phi mu" buttons and ribbons, and breaking out in a phi mu cheer. It is so annoying!!!! Noone else does those things.

Thats just my two sense. I don't want to offend anyone, and I know all chapters are different everywhere and I am sure somewhere out there my GLO has a chapter out there just like that.

Elon Phi Mu's

I've actually heard really good things about the Phi Mu's at Elon. My brother graduated from there in June, and I got to know them really well. Everyone I talked to up there was really supportive of them, too. I could be a little partial, but I thought they were great.

I know that some old high school friends of mine (a set of twins) pledged Phi Mu a couple years ago. They had a lot of fun doing thing with their sisters at University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
I didn't know their whole chapter but they were obviously good friends of mine so the girl must have been sweet!

I wish we could all have opinons while not being so crude...there is a way to say anything tactfully.P.S. That goes for all these type questions...what is so and so like on your campus.

PinkStar17 12-04-2001 06:24 AM

I am a Phi Mu @ FIU and I love it!!
We are doing great this year with 23 new phi's and many active sisters. We have a rep. with most guys to be down to earth and alot of fun...easy to get along with and for having great sisterhood.. I am also proud to report that we are the Fall 2001 Intermural champions!! we placed first in football, volleyball, and softball!!... we try to be as involved on campus as possible, we have sisters in SGA, peer advising, Dance Marathon, Panhellenic president, and vice president. we also are very supportive of all the greek letter organizations on campus, everytime someone has an event we are out there supporting. Im very glad to be a Phi Mu!
I also think that every campus is different, and what may seem annoying or bad to some may seem great to others. Cheering and being proud doesn't sound annoying....it sounds like they are proud and willing to show just how proud by cheering with lots of Phi Mu spirit!!
Still every campus has different girls and different people...it all depends how you look at it.

MoxieGrrl 12-04-2001 09:31 AM

I *LOVE* the Phi Mus on our campus! They are an awesome, diverse bunch of girls! Their chapter house is right next door to ours, so I know a lot of them fairly well. Very classy girls!!! Their GPA is always high, and they pledge quota or very close to. Their sisterhood is really great! Some people see it as they are snobby and do not talk to anyone else, but I have not seen this to be true at all! The Phi Mus just seem to generally enjoy being around each other. Also, they are athletic as well....many of their sisters are soccer, basketball, and softball players, and outstanding ones at that! Whenever our chapter has anything going on (a big philanthropy project, stuff like that), they always are the first house to volunteer and ask if we need anything. Great, great women....the Phi Mu GCers on the board should be proud!

this kind of sounds like the phi mu's at our school. they tend to be REALLY fake. most of them do walk around like they are something special and everyone needs to want to be like them or something. from what i understand of it, the phi mu chapter here has some problems with their sisterhood (this meaning they put on a great show at social activities and during rush about how great their sisterhood bond is and then tearing eachother up in meetings and in private). unless you are 5'9 and weigh 115lbs the phi's here think that you aren't good enough for them. they believe very strongly in keeping up this "perfect" image and (again) from what i understand, they can sometimes treat their sisters badly to make sure they live up to the image they want.

i am not downing phi mu's as a whole, because i am friends with a couple of them here, i am only talking about the chapter at my school. i understand that images of chapters are different from school to school (just like azd's), this is just simply my opinion of the chapter at my school. sorry if i offended anyone out there who is part of a great phi mu chapter! :)

HeavenslilAngel 12-05-2001 11:11 PM

Phi Mu as a whole is great on our campus. We only have 3 nationals on our campus and 1 local (my sorority) and they are pretty big, they always, from what I can tell meet their quota. I know quite a few, and all are sweet. I don't know much about their sisterhood or etc but I have nothing but positive to say about them.

lionlove 12-06-2001 12:07 PM

The Phi Mus on my campus are great (I'm a little biased being a phi mu myself). Very friendly and intelligent. We are in PA though and not as strong as the Phi Mu chapters down south.

Angels&Arrows 12-06-2001 02:04 PM

Phi Mu at my school is a good solid chapter, full of very all-around girls. We use to have Phi-esta with them each fall (not sure if they still have it). The reigning Miss Mississippi, who also I think was in the top 20 at Miss America graduated this past May and is a Phi Mu.

And we wonder why sororities don't get along Panhellenically...:(

GammaPhiBabe 12-07-2001 05:04 PM

The Phi Mus at my school were sort of stuck-up. They didn't mingle much with other sororities. Things may have changed since I graduated, so I don't know what they're like now.
They were all very pretty and talented girls, though. They always made quota and they were mostly blonde. Phi Mu was a very strong group.

LionsNLadybugs 12-10-2001 07:11 AM

I am a sister of Phi Mu at a southern school, and we are awesome! In addition to a strong, tight sisterhood, our chapter boasts many awards and honors. I am very proud to say that Phi Mu is on TOP!

SoExited@FSU 12-10-2001 05:32 PM

FSU Phi Mu's

Phi Mu is a 3rd Tier Sorority here at FSU. The girls are nice, but shy and uninvolved- Kind of invisible on Campus.

Peaches-n-Cream 12-10-2001 05:41 PM

I don't know any Phi Mus.

ilovemyglo 12-11-2001 01:59 AM

Phi Mu at my school got 35 girls this year and initiated 31. Quota was 40, BTW and after initiation 5 girls dropped. At the end of this semester 2 more went inactive. I think they need more emphasis on sisterhood and less on image right now. That is my personal opinion, though. I know two Phi Mus that I talk to and that is the impression I get. They have a rep for hiding girls during rush too.

ladybug1116 12-11-2001 03:10 AM

Ok I wasn't going to respond because obviously I am biased towards my own organization....but anyway...So maybe we are not the best sorority on FSU's campus but by no means would I consider us to be shy and uninvolved/invisible on campus. We have sisters in MANY campus organizations and participate in almost every IM and philanthropy. We have had a sister on Homecoming Court every year I have been at FSU and place in many competitions including winning last year's Dance Marathon. We also had a great rush this year, have really tightened up the sisterhood in the past couple of years and are at chapter total. Sorry to be defensive but I would just like to share another picture of FSU Phi Mu's.

Sue_XO 12-11-2001 04:59 PM

We did not have Phi Mu at Indiana State but I got the honor of living with one from either Purdue or I.U. (it was a long time ago)!

She was the twin sister of a Chi O and transferred to ISU. She stayed with us in the Chi O stairwell- she was the most sweetest person. Sincere and very very beautiful but the kind that did not know it.

She was so proud of Phi Mu- she wore her letters all the time and represented them very well on a campus that did not have a local chapter.

Miami1839 12-11-2001 09:46 PM

We didnt really do much with Phi Mu as a whole at GMU but I had a couple friends in Phi Mu that were really nice. They were a blast to party with.

PM_Mama00 12-13-2001 01:01 AM

Pardon me for being "Pink" for a moment.

I know Phi Mu is different on all campuses, but there is no need for demeaning us so badly! There are things that I hate about some sorority on my campus, but I don't publicly announce it because it is not panhel-friendly. I cant believe any of you even have the guts to write this stuff! I'm proud to be a Phi Mu at my school. We are the girls with class, and the most respect!

maggieaxid 12-13-2001 10:23 AM

Thats not what is reffered to as being "Pink". Being Pink is when you start clapping and cheering during a seminar on anti-hazing, a date rape announcement on campus, or someone who is greek going to the hospital from drinking to much. Its when people are inappropriatly showing their sorority spirit during a Panhellenic/IFC event. In the past, when I was on Panhell. Phi Mu had been reprimanded several times for this behavior.

Its perfectly acceptable if its during greekweek or homecoming, but not when you are talking about a member of another greek organization on your campus who has been recently raped. Thats just wrong and disrespectful to the woman, her organizations members, and all the greeks on the campus.

I didn't mean to offend anyone, I was just being HONEST, like what was asked of me (if you look in the first post, it stresses "Be Honest". People need to stop being so defensive and so touchy.

My organization isn't perfect, nationally or on my campus. I know that. We've had every problem just like EVERYONE ELSE HAS. Noone should be throwing stones in their glass houses.

PM_Mama00 12-13-2001 12:11 PM

Sorry for my post then. It's a habit to defend the sake of my organizations name, which is hte same for anyone. If they are doin that kind of behavior, I don't see the problem. Yeah it's annoying, but we al get annoying. However, I didn't know the situation. That is totally wrong for them to do that! Panhel needs to put the smackdown on them. I would feel the same way u do if it was another org.

maggieaxid 12-13-2001 02:36 PM

I am sorry if i offended you. I should explained myself and my campus a little better. All in all Phi Mu is a strong chapter and national organization.

Akronn 12-19-2001 02:03 AM

Phi Mu gals are a blast and their chapter at my school went all out and recruited the best! I even felt inclined to take one to my semi-formal... ;)
