What was the worst fashion/fad you can remember?

Bellbottoms, jelly sandals, plastic charm bracelts, jheri curl. They were in style than but not now. Did you take part in these trends?

DOVE1920 11-30-2001 01:50 PM

Bringing back memories

JELLY SANDALS!!!!!!!!!!! Oh how I remember digging in a barrel to find some my size. Only to have them fall apart the next day from me playing in them. What about the jeans with patches of leather or suede on them?

NOWorNEVER 11-30-2001 02:27 PM

I'm kinda young, but for me, I'd say "cross colors." the big baggy shorts w/ big blocks or red, orange, green, blue, etc.

zetaphibeta301 11-30-2001 03:27 PM

Two-toned or acid washed jeans. I had a blue shearling that I loved but now I am thinking back and shaking my head.

SoTrue1920 11-30-2001 05:07 PM

I'm an 80s baby, so I'm going to say NEON everything. We had a girl in my school who would wear so many different neon colours together that one of my teachers called her "Kool-Aid" :D

Oh, and another one -- the big Madonna style cross jewelry. I have to say that I had a couple of pairs of cross earrings that I'd mis-match and wear.

Special1920 11-30-2001 06:37 PM

HMMM, so many

Jheri curls
men wearing braids
blond hair on black women
clogs
Michael Jackson's gym shoes
plastic shoes

pretty3grl 11-30-2001 08:42 PM

I had a curl!!!:D
I also wore:
A Michael Jackson red leather jacket
Leg warmers
extra-tight jeans (the Jordash look)
ankle boots with my jeans tucked into them
2-3 pair of layered socks (you had to see each color)
Izod or Polo shirts (with the collar flipped up)
an earring with a key (a la Miss Jackson)
2-3 triangle shapped earrings in each ear (a la Salt and Pepper)
Flashdance style loose sweat shirts
Penny loafers with quarters in them

I could go on and on...

volgirl2376 11-30-2001 08:50 PM

One word: JAMS - those neon crazy long shorts I think my age group wore like in elementry school

Candy necklaces - sticky neck!

Different colored stone washed jeans - like pink...as well as any kind of jeans with the zippers at the bottom (or anywhere)

Wearing more than one watch on an arm (like 3 or 4 swatch watches)

Ruffles

Bananna Clips

Shoulder Pads

NinjaPoodle 12-01-2001 01:35 AM

the "flashdance look"

Jeri curls or the "Ready For The World look"
jellies or /and plastic shoes

I liked the acid wash jeans:D

AXiD4Life 12-01-2001 04:17 PM

Where to start?

Let's see...

Big, poofy bangs
Poodle perms
slap bracelets
scrunch socks
jeans rolled at the ankle, with like 5 pairs of different colored socks underneath
big huge NKOTB pins
acid-wash anything
off-the-shoulder shirts
T-shirts tied with a big ol' knot or clip on the side
crimped hair in a banana clip...

Sadly, this was all stuff I used to wear in elementary school:rolleyes:

DeltAlum 12-01-2001 04:42 PM

What I call the "Disco" look and farther back, Nehru Jackets.

LOL The "tight roll" pants!!! Remember when it would come undone?? oh hell! You had to stop in the middle of the hall, bend over, and fix it!

SoTrue1920 12-01-2001 11:48 PM

AXiD4Life, it's not nice to make fun of just about every single girl I went to high school with. :D

I was a mix between Goth, New Wave and Punk in high school. I wore lots of black, slouched, and generally looked ticked off all of the time. ;)

lil_sunshine 12-03-2001 07:22 PM

1. Black patent leather shoes
2. Legwarmers (tell me why I was on my way to my friend's house and I saw some white chick wearing them; and she was old enough to know better!)
3. Hammer pants (nuff said!)
4. Any Salt -N- Pepa hairstyle
5. Patra braids (and where is she now anyway?)
*6. Denim jeans where girls wrote on the back, "DON'T TOUCH!", even though some of the girls who wore those pants weren't all that cute.

*= new addition

That's all I can think of for now. I'll post another ray of sunshine soon!! :D

Worst Fad/Fashion

My neighbor...Oh my goodness I wish you guys could see this man!!!! He is stuck in the 70's...He wears these funky colored suits with those crazy colored shirts...He leaves his shirt unbuttoned so he can show off his hairy chest along with his gold chain with this big zodiac medallion hanging from it!!! He walks around sporting this afro with the afro pic in his head....Oh it gets better he thinks he is the "Mac Daddy" of arkansas... :D

PrettyKitty 12-04-2001 12:26 PM

33girl 12-05-2001 12:20 AM

I gotta weigh in on this one, since I was at the mall tonight and saw some people actually still sporting these looks!

Bell bottoms (impossible to wear if you have hips and a butt)
Dark brown lipliner w/ gloss inside
Collars as wide across as your shoulders
The big shirt, belted over stirrup pants
Tight jeans with high heels!!

I remember the cross colors, and the Reebok black tennis shoes with the flourescent soles. Yikes!!!

Her Dopenezzz 12-05-2001 08:08 PM

PrettyKitty 12-07-2001 05:10 PM

lol @ Dove1920....remember cool outs and butterfly collars...and and anything lace...yuck...

RedAngel 12-08-2001 01:41 AM

I remember bellbottoms from junior high school.

What about the little house on the prairie look with the tops with the ruffles on?

Finer Woman10-A-91 12-08-2001 11:20 PM

I had one of those...the double breasted shirt. LOL I actually liked that shirt.

Why don't we just include that ridiculous neon trend, mettallic shoes and belts(argh) and just about anything else from the 80's...it was a sooooo very tacky time period in fashion.

The Truth 06-23-2005 08:47 AM

This one need not be remembered because it is alive and well. I hate this hippie look that is going on right now. I can't wait for the winter to come so they can get those flow-y skirts and those ugly shirts out the windows.

Chunky heel shoes, wedge sandals, platforms. If you still got them in your closet, people are laughing at you when you wear them.

tunatartare 06-23-2005 09:19 AM

slap bracelets

those things hurt

TheEpitome1920 06-23-2005 10:15 AM

an abundance of pink on men
anything neon
wearing clothes inside out

Honeykiss1974 06-23-2005 10:20 AM

Those plastic bracelets (the ones started by Lance Armstrong but have now expanded to say any and everything)

YESSSSS...I guess they started off as a good fundraising idea but now its annoying. See people with 5 bracelets on their arm.

I do believe I wore that exact outfit for class pictures one year. My shirt had little charms of various French landmarks over the buttons...so chic!

preciousjeni 06-24-2005 07:54 AM

Stretch pants -- I'm going with others who have mentioned the stretch pants and leggings with oversized sweaters

Pins/Buttons -- Did anyone else have like A MILLION different pins (political/entertainment/etc.) and buttons (different shapes and sizes) ALL over a jean jacket, tight-rolled jeans and a jean purse?

Ooh - y'all remember those little jean purses with different scenes on them? Scenes like a girl putting on lipstick with the quote, "Whatever you say........NOT!!!!!"

ETA: Ok - I've asked many people about this and everyone thinks I'm crazy. DOES ANYONE remember Multiples?????? Those clothes that were solid colors and there were maybe only five different pieces but you would wear them differently for different things. For example: the mini-skirt was also a tube top. The material was really soft and stretchy.

Also, shopping for them was part of the craze. You'd go to the mall and there would be a wall full of white tubes and boxes and you'd pick out your stuff from there.

Yup - we had a store like that called Units. It was fun at the time, but I'd never want to wear that look again! That store in the mall is now a MAC. I was in there the other day and while waiting for my makeup, I found myself giggling at all the times my best friend and I would go in there just to create really crazy combinations.

ClassyKitty05 06-25-2005 09:59 PM

Jelly Shoes
Platform Tennis Shoes
Slap Bracelets
NEON anything (I once had a tank top that was lime green on one side and super bright neon pink on the other... why did my mother let me wear that!?)
Shirts with your name or any other message airbrushed on them

I had two pairs of Units pants, which I called "fancy sweats." Wore those suckers fairly regularly in the early 1990s.:o

Strive 06-27-2005 10:23 PM

jeri curls
leg warmers
giant belts
tight a** jeans on men
say anything T-shirts

Kamryn 06-28-2005 03:25 AM

I didn't know that people still rock the jheri curl! I saw this guy the other night with jheri curl juice dripping on his polyester suit. I thought I was having flashbacks of the early 90s. :D

Then I went to dinner last night and saw a woman in the restaurant wearing several pairs of earrings at the same time going up the earlobes from smallest to largest.

Individual braids with the little gold rings at the ends, or the burned ends are a couple more.

RACooper 06-28-2005 03:31 AM

The puffy winter jacket - all the time, even in this heat... oh wait people still do it

Other than that -
leg warmers
those horrible little gym shorts for guys
speedos
tight ass acid wash jeans
Jeri curl mullets (a horrible combination of two bad ideas)
side ponytails
spandex (in it's many incarnations)
t-shirts over long sleeve shirts/sweaters

ROFLOLOLOLOLOL!

I was trying to find a picture to illustrate the image in my mind, when I found this on joesportsfan.com.

"Not only was Lionel a musical genius, he was also a pioneer in the world of hair. Lionel is the only known man to pull off the historic “superfecta of hair”, simultaneously wearing a jheri curl, mullet, ponytail and mustache all at the same time in the Dancing on the Ceiling video."

"superfecta of hair"??? LOLOLOL! Y'all I'm done for the night...DONE!
