Top 3 Sororities and Frats in your Region
In many parts of the country, certain orgs are more prevalent than others. This is not to say that these groups are not as viable or AS important. But, from what you SEE, please list what orgs are more VISIBLE in your area. (If you are Greek or an interest, don't list your org, just because you want it posted. If you all aren't doing anything or are visibile, don't front...LOL);)
I've heard where in "THIS" part of the country ABC is more VISIBLE than DEF and so on and so forth. For instance, down here, you DON'T really see Iotas (not to take anything away from the Iotas), but I'm sure in other places they are ALL OVER the place. Anyone may respond. :D Please list if you are: North South East West Midwest |
Columbus, Ohio
This is what I've seen:
1) Delta Sigma Theta: These ladies @ OSU always have nice programs, ALWAYS! 2) Kappa Alpha Psi: They are starting a new non-profit, and they have some annual events (one that's co-sponsored w/ DST) 3) I'm not really sure... I would say NPHC, lol. But, seriously, we have a few NPHC sponsored events. I wouldn't be able to pick a third org. CT4, what do you think? |

How egalitarian of you! |
South
Down here in the South(TN to be precise) it differs from what region of TN you are from. I am in East TN
Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. I think there is a chapter of Iota Phi Theta, Inc. in middle TN. In West TN Zeta Phi Beta Simga Country Sigma Gamma Rho I guess I could say everyone is prevelant in TN, but your region makes a world of difference. |

Soror 2D, do you mean programs, or just visibility, period, like who reps the hardest, or who's plates do you see, or what? I was listing as far as visibility in the community (events). Clearly, lol, I'm just trying to get my sorors on the list, lol. Now I'm feelin' all guilty, lol. :o |
South Carolina
I'll base my top picks on community events/involvement and articles I've read in the newspaper about what the organization has done or is doing in the community.
Alpha Kappa Alpha:D Phi Beta Sigma Omega Psi Phi |

THIS IS WHAT I MEAN! |
My Top Picks!
I am in the midwest region ( southern part of Kansas) and I would have to say:
1. Alpha Kappa Alpha 2. Kappa Alpha Psi 3. And that is it! Although we have 8 of the 9 orgs on our campus (no Iotas) no one really does anything! |
...Let Me See
Well, I've lived in several places...so I'll list them by states and regions.....
New Orleans (south).....Delta Sigma Theta/Omega Psi Phi St. Louis (Mid-West) .....Alpha Kappa Alpha Chicago/Bloomington (Mid-West)....Alpha Kappa Alpha/KAPsi Nashville (South)....Er'body--its a college town (Fisk, Meharry, Vandy, TSU, Belmont and etc.) Last but not least....Houston, TX -- Delta's and AKA's |
In the Midwest Alpha Phi Alpha gets a lot of respect because they are always throwing something positive on campus and they are all members of student goverment or presidents of a campus organizations.
Kappa Alpha Psi is also real popular in terms of throwing events and parties (and to be honest for looking so good:rolleyes:) As far as sororities, Delta Sigma Theta and Alpha Kappa Alpha do a lot in terms of community service and involvement. I guess the top three in the Midwest, mainly Chicago is Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta. |
What about the GRADUATE chapters? What is being done IN THE COMMUNITY?
|
Since I'm in school, I'll list the top three undergraduate chapters at my school and the top three graduate chapters at home.
Tallahassee, FL 1. Alpha Phi Alpha 2. Alpha Kappa Alpha 3. Delta Sigma Theta Philadelphia and Surrounding 1. Kappa Alpha Psi 2. Alpha Phi Alpha 3. Delta Sigma Theta and Alpha Kappa Alpha |
I am in the South.
#1 Delta Sigma Theta #2 Alpha Kappa Alpha #3 Alpha Phi Alpha Now on my yard, it was definitely #1 Alpha Kappa Alpha #2 Phi Beta Sigma #3 Delta Sigma Theta |
I'm in south florida.
as far as in the community, its like this: 1. Delta Sigma Theta 2. Alpha Kappa Alpha At my college, it's like this (at least it was last Spring) 1. Phi Beta Sigma 2. Sigma Gamma Rho 3. Alpha Kappa Alpha/Kappa Alpha Psi (they do almost all of their activities together) |
New York NY
You always hear about SGRhos and Zetas here in NY. I Can't even count the number of SGRho's, they always represent here. didn't know Alpha Kappa Alpha even existed until I got into college. But your presence is felt now... There are so many Sigmas you think they are running things:) So So many! Anbody from NY notice anything different?

New York is strange. Many in NYC are oblivious to greek life. My sands is from NY and he didn't know about Alpha until he came to Ohio. You can spend weeks there and not see one letter, license plate--NOTHIN! Is it just me???
|
Your right dirtymike..
Half of my friends don't even know what I am talking about when I tell them about black greeks... and these folks are black and in college! It seems the greek circle here is very small compared to the millions that live here and don't know nada about greeks... except what they have seen on Animal House, School Daze etc.

Southern Cali
in southern cali in terms of #'s i see mostly
DST ZPB AKA Sgrho Omega Kappa Sigma Alpha Iota in terms of community service i think all our organizations need to work on their visibility/public image because they are hard at work but seldom do i see any articles, etc about what the black greeks are doing in the community. |
College Station and Houston, TX
Oh my campus in College Station (90 miles NW of Houston) the undergraduate chapters most visible and most on the move are:
AKA & DST (equally on top) for the ladies and KAPsi and APhiA for the men, with the men of KAPsi proclaiming a small lead as they host a major comedy event and the largest step show in TX. At home, in Houston the grad chapters most visible are hard to say, because there are like 6 chapters of AKA and 3 of DST. So not knowing which chapter is doing what I would say the ladies in both hold it down. They are both incredibly active and working hard in the community. Fraternally speaking, I am not so sure. The men I know who are major community leaders happen to be Alphas, but on the chapter level, I am not sure of who does what. |
SEE..
I can tell you from Cali PositivelyAKA, cause I think you are the only one so far to mention SgRho!
I am in central Cali but I would have to say: DST SgRho/Aka(tied) ZphiB For the men I would say AphiA Kappa Alpha Psi PhiBetaSigma In cali, we have a lot of Sgrhos here. QTE ;) |

She has a good point about not seeing many articles, whether in the wider press or in the black press, where there should be more coverage. Our black paper in San Diego just ran a story and photos for our AKA Coat Day, but the article wasn't that long. :( |
I tried...
but it was killing me, lol. I just had to say, while AKA (my grad chapter, anyway) isn't that visible in the community, we do most of our "service" in donating money. We are the invisible do-ers. I just had to get that out there, it was eating at me, lol. Shoot, everybody had their org on their list. I wasn't havin' it, lol. :)

New York City
What I see in the city is that most of the ugrad chapters have either dissolved(literally or lack of representation) or are under suspension/investigation. However, I have seen a lot of representation from the grad chaps, esp. those members of PBS with the members of APA running close behind. Also, the grad mem of AKA are doing their thing.

Its interesting...New Yorkers
I too have noticed that no one organization really is more visible than another. I am very active in my chapter as well as in the community. I don't recall my chapter ever receiving a correspondence from any other Sorority regarding chapter happenings. Although on occasion, the NPHC will list events of the D9.
I think if we all collaborated more the issue of visibility would not be an issue at all. I know my chapter has an Archonette group at the Frederick Douglass Academy and the Deltas have a Delta Academy at the Mahalia Jackson elementary school, the Omegas sponsor a black college tour (my neo works with them on that project). I also see a ton of SGRhos all over New York. We have a bowling battle in the spring, which I am looking forward to again. I have noticed the Zetas and Deltas in recent years support eachother in the undergraduate arena probably most. The fraternities seem to all be holding their own. I do recall reading in the local paper about an AKA luncheon one of the grad chapters was hostessing. Like Ideal08, I think many of us (my chapter included) do much our service behind the scenes in our philanthropic giving, which is equally important. |
it's all regional
places I've been....
Birmingham: Omega Kappa Others not doing anything... (no Iota's in Alabama except Montgomery *Alabama State*) AKA's Zeta's Delta's In Tuscaloosa: APhiA and Omega tied KAPsi PBS Delta AKA ZPhiB SGRho In Nashville.. (depends on what campus you're on) at Vanderbilt: KAPsi at Tennessee State: Omegas & Alphas |
im in southern cali too (los angeles/ inland empire) and these are my observations (based off of community service, social events, and articles)
sororities DST (they're everywhere!) SGRHO/ZETA (tied) AKA (i know there are huge numbers of them, but they are not out/visible) fraternities KAPPAS PHI BETA SIGMA ALPHAS/OMEGAS (tied) IOTAS its funny how we all see things a little different! but its all gravy. |
In New York, at least central to upstate, stretching from westchester to buffalo, i'd say the msot common fraternities are
SAE, DEKE and TKE. The most common sororities are DDD, Alpha Phi and AXO. |

sometimes its spelled DKE but their nickname is usuallty DEKE sorry for the confusion;) |
At school...
in the DC area this is what I see the most
Sororities Delta (especially during their Delta Days) AKA Zeta Fraternities Omega Alpha Kappas (there are plenty of Iotas in MD though) When I'm home in Boston, (although it's not that often) AKA Zeta Delta Alphas (they're really the most visible BGLO in New England) Sigmas I'm sure they're more people, I just don't see people wear their letters at community events. |
Arkansas
In central arkansas this is what I have observed: Top 3 Sororities 1. Alpha Kappa Alpha 2. Delta Sigma Theta 3. Zeta Phi Beta Top 3 Fraternities 1. Alpha Phi Alpha 2. Kappa Alpha Psi 3. Phi Beta Sigma Southwest Arkansas Top 3 Sororities 1. Delta Sigma Theta 2. Zeta Phi Beta 3. Sigma Gamma Rho Top 3 Fratenities 1. Alpha Phi Alpha 2. Kappa Alpha Psi 3. Phi Beta Sigma |
In the New Jersey area:
Sororities 1. Alpha Kappa Alpha 2. Delta Sigma Theta 3. There really isn't a #3. These are the most visible in my community Fraternities 1. Omega Psi Phi 2. Phi Beta Sigma 3. Kappa Alpha Psi |
I am an undergrad interest that attends school in Manhattan. It is hard for me to see who's who because most of the students commute. :( I have seen I SGRho and one Zeta on campus ( they were walking somewhere in a hurry like everyone else in this city). I saw Delta at my gym a few times (she wore a sweatshirt with sorority name). I haven't seen an Alpha as of yet. I do try to attend events since I know it is harder in NYC since there is so much going on here. It is hard for a person to stay in one spot. Thank goodness for the internet because that is my primary source for finding out when there is a greek event going on.
Coming from an HBCU down south to a CUNY school at home, I was shocked to find out how hard it is to spoke greeks on campus. My personal take on the issue.I guess all interested parties will have to work harder to find out what is going on and where. |
I am from Yonkers, NY and my playground was Brooklyn! Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated has always made it's presence known through out the country. Growing up in NY I knew about sorority and fraternity life from my teachers, relatives and family friends that attended various colleges through out New York. I was and AKA Westchester County debutante. Now going to places like Jones Beach during the summer the presence of the Omegas and Sigmas was high. The AKAs, Deltas and Zeta presence was high. Through my travels and residing through out the country AKAs and Deltas have always been dominant. Alphas, Omegas and Kappas have always been dominant as well. Sigmas, Zetas, Rhos and Iotas have been sporadic. Yet in the North I must say Sigmas in the North seem to be more active and visible.
|
Like my good Bruh Swamp said, many things are regional.
As far as numbers in the NY area there are definitely more Sigmas and SGRhos than probably anywhere else in the country, especially younger ones. Philadelphia: on the grad level, Omega, Alpha, and Kappa all represent but Kappa may be strongest because that is where there national headquarters are. Kappas and Alphas have always been strong on the u.g. level but I see more and more Sigmas. Grad: There are many AKAs but I know mostly about what the Deltas do and they are everywhere and into everything. Couldn't tell you anything about the others. U.G. I see many more SGRhos and Zetas now, maybe as much as the AKAs and Deltas |
Frats
1. Kappa Alpha Psi (very very strong Grad and Und) 2. Alpha Phi Alpha 3. Omega Psi Phi hard to tell what sororities |
In upstate New York (Albany).
Graduate chapters in terms of community involvement/media exposure : Sororities DST AKA ZPB Fraternities Omegas PBS Alphas/Kappas Undergrad chapters I'm not sure of their activities but I do see more Sghros, Zetas, PBS and Kappas. |
Chicago and Atlanta
Hometown on Chicago:
CHI is a AKA owned city..their nationals are there and they just seem to be everywhere and involved in everything. SGRhos also make a big impact because their nationals are loacted in Chicago. Zetas and Deltas are prevalent but scarce. As far as frats go I see alot of Omegas, but we have a very large population of IOTAS. Alphas and Sigmas do their thing but they are not as big. Down on the yard in the ATL!! Omegas run the yard and Alphas hold a lot of influence in a close second. AKAs and Deltas are tied each having a ridiculous amount of active members on campus Zetas and Sigmas do they thing and hold it down for the blue and white!! IOTAS and SGRhos are very distant, you'll be lucky to see more the two of them at a time..but I still got love for them!!! :D |
my observations
In terms of overall visibility:
Philly DST - alumnae SGRho - collegiate Kappa - alumnae ??? - collegiate Baltimore DST - alum and collegiate AKA - alum Kappa - alumnae Alpha - collegiate |
