Lefthanded

Lefthanded people ... where are you?

I always have trouble to find the lefthanded desk (especially the auditorium type class), simply because the lefthanded seat always be in the very left of the row or else. I usually sit in the middle of the row, no matter what, so I bump a lot with other people's hand when we write notes.

What is your experience with your lefthandedness?

SH80er 11-28-2001 11:16 PM

That's like the one catergory I am normal in!
I'm righthanded, but right brain dominant. How could that be?

So, maybe I was SUPPOSED to be left handed.

greeklawgirl 11-28-2001 11:48 PM

I'm a lefty!

I never really had a problem with it. The only time I can recall is when I was in elementary school learning how to write in cursive. My teacher made us use erasable ink...it would smudge all over the paper and the palm of my hand. For a compulsive neatnik like myself, blue ink everywhere was awful!

amycat412 11-29-2001 02:17 PM

Lefty hear!!

In 2nd grade, Sister Therisine wouldn't let me write cursive because she said "left handed people are from the devil."

And took me forever to learn to tie my shoes!

Any of the rest of you the ONLY lefty in your family? I am, no one else is and no one can remember anyone ever being.

Optimist Prime 11-29-2001 04:50 PM

It depends on what I'm doing. I play pool left handed. I play base ball right handed. I eat left handed. I play hockey, a long time ago, I switched up to cover the side oppisite. Um...i'm left footed for surfing and when i ride my razor scooter. I still ride it sometimes. Even though, thats sooo last year. What else?? I write right handed, but i usually perfer to sign my name left handed.

Tom Earp 11-29-2001 06:43 PM

I always heard that leftys were children of the devil and that is why mothers immediately worked with the baby to use the right hand!

My mother until the day She Passed Away said I was right handed!

But you have a week eye and a strong eye. Your strong eye is the one your hand is!

I learned this being a cop! Heck couldnot hit the target with a shot gun!Looking with the wrong eye!

Well of course, I am near sighted and far sighted! Ha so all of you are right , I am not right!:D

Actually your dominant eye isn't always the same as you strong hand. I took riflery class in college and I know that for a fact. There is a test to determine your dominant eye. Keep both eyes open and point your finger at a stationary target. Then close one eye. If your finger is still pointing at the tartet then the open eye is your dominant eye. It is very difficult to shoot straight if your dominant eye is not the same as your dominant hand but it definitely happens.

LEFTY OVA HERE!

I'm a lefty.

I use my right hand to use scissors. I NEVER used the lefty scissors with the green handles. Do you all remember those?

I had a hard time learning how to write, period.
When learning how to write, my letters always slanted. I can't remember which way, but my father (my principal) insisted to the teacher that I not write "upside down" or where my letters would lean.

I do hold my paper to the left when I write, however, I do not turn so that I"m writing upside down.

Tom Earp 11-29-2001 07:04 PM

Well the controversy rages on:D

I pick my nose with my left hand and scratch my butt with the right!

I guess that is why we are not all the same?;)

Yeah, I think you can buy them at the leftorium.

amycat412 11-29-2001 07:31 PM

I HATED those green scissors! They never worked, weren't sharp at all, as if we lefties couldn't be trusted with sharp objects.

Welll, did the target test for my eyes, and left is dominant there too!

Am I the only lefty that has a difficult time with potato peelers?? :) I am serious!

Amy

greeklawgirl 11-29-2001 07:51 PM

My husband is going crazy with my lefty idiosyncracies! He wanted to buy me a set of golf clubs for Christmas and couldn't figure out if he should get a lefty pair or not.

He actually had me trying to swing and throw and catch in our place so he could see if I prefered my left or my right! They were both about the same, so he really couldn't tell.

I didn't have the heart to tell him that I didn't have a natural preference because I am the most unathletic person on the face of this earth. My idea of being athletic is the 10 foot sprint to the phone when its across the room. :D

My sister's 2 daughters are left-handed. I think my nephew who is only a year and a half will be left-handed. My sister and her husband are right-handed.

My left eye is dominant, also.

:D

AGDLynn 11-29-2001 10:59 PM

"If the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only lefties are in their right minds."

And yes, my left-eye is definitely more dominant!
:p

SparkliiQTMTSU 11-29-2001 11:47 PM

Im a lefty!! and yes Im the ONLY lefty in my whole family haha Im the only one with green eyes too!! *YAAAY Nicholi is original!!*

queequek 12-01-2001 07:22 PM

Also I learned to play violin, boy, it was hard and expensive to get the lefty violin, so I got the usual violin - took me forever to handle the violin and to play it.

SilverTurtle 12-02-2001 12:33 PM

Ambidextrious <-- did I spell that right?

Hmm.. well, when I was a kid, I apparently did everything left handed. Now I write w/ my right hand, although I can write O.K. w/ my left. I eat left handed. I bat right handed. I throw a football better (but not farther) left handed.

I just did that dominant eye test and it was my right eye.

I tend to be more right-minded.

So I'm one of those freaky ambidextrious people, although I don't think I'm spelling it correctly. :p

ChiOqt 12-02-2001 08:49 PM

I'm a leftie. But some things, like certain sports, I play right-handed. People always make fun of the way that I write too! I was always told that "Only the most intelligent people were born left handed!" and it's true!!!!

I have heard Lefties are pretty smart and even more so that learn to use both hands. My brother and sister in laws mother are both lefties. Potatoe Peelers? ha ha.

Miami1839 12-02-2001 10:05 PM

Sounds like my old grandmother bless her soul. Her idea of exercise was picking up a slice of pizza and going 1..2..3...:)

queequek 12-04-2001 12:11 AM

My roommate is a normal person, but his identical twin is a lefty. Isn't that weird?

CrimsonTide4 12-12-2001 09:09 PM

To the Left, to the left. . .now TOOTSEE ROLL, LOL!!

I hated those lefty scissors -- THEY DO NOT CUT :p

I am not the only one in my family but one of the only ones in my generation.

My mom and I used to battle http://www.plaudersmilies.de/punch.gif when she was teaching me how to write. However, I do write just like my mom because I had to learn how to forge her signature :p

DeTeRm1NaT1on 12-12-2001 10:00 PM

Im a lefty and proud of it!!

I was always told that left handed people are very smart.

a 100 on my math final proves it..lol...(im so happy i just had to put it) :)

straightBOS 12-12-2001 10:00 PM

LEFTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And dayum proud of it too. I inherited from my dad, but he's the only lefty in his entire family (9 kids). My mother has no lefties-- no aunts, cousins, 2nd cousins, (well, you get the picture)...

The only thing I can do right handed is move a computer mouse. My right hand is seriously weaker than my left, and I like it that way.. :D

the best part was playing baseball or kick ball (remember that) in school, I was the only lefty so no one could trick me up with outside pitches and the like.

In the West Indies, where I am from, they have a saying about left-hnaders. Supposedly, "Lefties owe the devil a day of work."

Don't know if its true, but I'm bringing lemonade, just in case.

Me Too

AKA2D '91 12-13-2001 05:43 PM

My mother never let me cook the biscuits or cornbread (from scratch) because she said I would stir the mixture backwards. If this happened, then the biscuits or cornbread would not come out right.

I still have not learned how to make those two things.

Tom Earp 12-13-2001 06:32 PM

Used to be able to do it right and left handed until had wrist surgery on left but makes no difference, dont do it anymore!:D

I found out as a Police Officer ( COP ) that I could not hit the damn target as my strong eye was my left and I shot right handed! Your strong eye is what ever you hand is you use!

Mom said never changed me, but as the left handed ones were dicipals of the devil?. That is why back in the good ole days parents changed hands of the kids, taught them that is!:D

Ah what the heck, who cares as long as you can read, and write you name on the credit card slip or you check book! :D They dont care as long as they get your $$$$$$

CodeBlue_R3 12-14-2001 11:56 AM

Miss Lefty-Right here

I'm a left-handed female often thought to be ambidextrious (even-handed).

Does anyone have this problem?
I can throw with my left hand, but I must catch with my right.

I write desk level with my left hand, but on the board with my right.

I draw with my left hand, but cut with my right.

Etc. etc

AKA2D '91 12-14-2001 07:00 PM

My paternal grandfather was ambidexterous. I can do several things with my right hand. I don't really consider myself ambidexterous.

I do not use the left-handed desks, I can't write using them.

There is no such thing as a lefty violin :D The bow goes in the right hand and the violin is played with the left.

tcsparky 12-15-2001 03:15 PM

I'm a lefty, too. For daily tasks, I switch up a lot. Scissors, water fountains, etc....somtimes just aren't available in left-handed versions. I bat right-handed though, also throw right-handed. I went thought the entire, "You'll get an F in penmanship if you slant the wrong way" struggle in fifth grade. We comprised. She wouldn't fail me if I wrote straight up-and-down instead of slanting to the left. I do not write upside down, mainly as a result of learning to write at age 4 by watching other people write. I do it the same way as a righty, just with my left hand. My students become fascinated when about three weeks into a term they suddenly realize I'm writing on the board with my left hand!!
Glad to see so many lefties on GC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cash78mere 12-16-2001 07:28 PM

i love being a lefty!

i cut, throw, write and do everything else with my left hand.

but i CAN'T use a lefty mouse for a computer for anything. i bat righty also.

i realized when i was trying to teach my kindergarteners how to tie their shoelaces that i "tie" lefty. yes, there is a difference! and i never realized it!

the only lefties in my family are my dad's brother and my mom's twin cousins. i'm the only girl lefty.

anyone remember the "lefty's catalogue" from about 10 years ago? i used to order stuff all the time. anyone know where to get it now???

hocnsoc81 12-16-2001 11:17 PM

Did you know that a few stores have lefthanded notebooks?

Me toooo!!! That was really the only trouble I had growing up as a lefty... Weeeellll, the scissors thing is kind of awkward, depending on how they are made.

angel_kak 12-25-2001 10:02 PM

i'm a lefty

I'm a lefty too...the only one in my family!

And still to this day haven't mastered writing w/o getting the smudge all over my hand like a little kid...

My teachers tried to get me to use my right hand but I still used the left...But I use my right hand to cut b/c of the scissors being taken out of my hands so many times and also for sports.

I agree with everyone else and hate those little girl handle scissors...I think i still have mine somewhere..

I am also left-handed, as is my husband. I do EVERYTHING left handed. I even write upside down---although I turn my paper like no one I have ever seen. The top of my paper is next to my left hand and the bottom of the sheet is to my right side--at a 90 degree angle. I write upside down but upwards---so if you were sitting on my right you could read everything I write would be facing you.
I do use a right handed mouse--but it is on the left side of my computer.
My right hand is about useless to me!!!
My husband is different though, he writes and uses silverware with his left hand. Although for sports he primarily uses his right hand.
As far as our kids--our oldest is as right handed as they come. The baby--time will only tell--he is too young to know.

SuperSister 12-27-2001 01:14 AM

my dad is a lefty . . . that doesn't really affect me except when we go out to eat. there are 5 of us in my family. most restaurants have booths that accomidate 4 and to seat 5 you have to wait longer. so in addition to having to wait longer it's sometimes difficult to get us seated so my dad doesn't accidentaly poke people . . . parties of 5 usually get round seating so all the more chances to poke ;o)

queequek 08-08-2002 06:20 PM

I just found out that in some religion, lefties considered evil  So, pretty much a lot of us going to hell, eh? :D

ROWDYsister 08-08-2002 07:02 PM

I'm a left-handed writer but I drive, throw, use the mouse with, use scissors with, etc. my right hand. My dad's a total lefty.

Does anyone else have to cover up their sheet of paper with another paper when taking notes because the left hand smudges everything? When I do this I get kind of weird looks from my neighbors b/c they must think I'm like paranoid note-taking girl or something.
