Your roots

I'm pretty sure this topic was covered in a thread a long time ago but I just said what the heck and make another one. sorry, If I offended anyone. Anways........I found out over thankgiving from an uncle of mine that my moms side goes all the way back to the 1400s in Scotland. We were once the Buchanans. Also, we there is some relation to Jessie James if you can believe that and the builder of the U.S.S. Consitution was one of my grandfathers. Another little tid bit is that one of my relatives back in the 1800s was a union soldier that got captured by the confederacy and wrote a diary while being held captive. My moms side is Scotish and my dads side is French/English. Originally my dads side started in France but because of their religon(french hugenots) they moved to England where my last name changed a bit. I went on a trip to Santiago, Chile once with a brother of mine and one of his uncles called me wa wa russa......that means russian baby in spanish. He just thought I have that baby face and looked russian. I wouldnt be suprised if I had some russian and german blood as well. I guess I'm probably a mutt. ha ha.

Also, all the women on my moms side are daughters of the american revolution. :D

PKTSU01 11-28-2001 10:27 PM

My dads side can be traced back to Italy and Spain, my moms to Italy and Greece. Theres definetly badass food in the house at all times AND although most guys don't care less, I LOVE my skin complexion.

Siobhan 11-28-2001 10:49 PM

I am 1st generation Canadian: both my parents were born in London. My Dad's side is mostly English, Scottish (MacKinnon of Skye) and Irish (from Waterford, unfortunately no known relation to the crystal), with a bit of German. My mum's side is basically English and further back, Welsh, Dutch, Italian and Jewish. We haven't been able to trace my family back to far yet, but my mum's mum family lived in the same part of Yorkshire dating back to the 1700's - not sure when they came down to London though. And a family favourite (or joke): when the Magnas married the Cartas (I kid you not!!).

ZTAngel 11-28-2001 10:54 PM

My Dad's side can be traced back to Russia, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Germany, France, and Sweden.

On my mom's side: I'm actually 1/4 Spanish. My Grandfather (mom's dad) is 100% Spanish (Spain). My Grandmother's family can be traced back to Morocco, Russia, Turkey, and Greece.

Scottish-Hispanic-Japanese-Irish-Dutch-Filipina-German-Vietnamese. Really.:)

IowaHawkeye 11-28-2001 11:00 PM

My mom's mother is 100% German
Her father is 100% Irish

My dad's father is 100% Italian
His mother is 100% Danish

so that makes me one crazy mix of 1/4 Italian, 1/4 Irish, 1/4 Danish and 1/4 German ;)

i sound like a recipie..... :p

SigkapAlumWSU 11-28-2001 11:42 PM

My mom was born in England, my dad in NY, his parents were from NY, and their parents were from Russia and Romania. Turns out that my Scottish clan, Clan Cumming, used to be in line for the Scottish throne. We started to research my fiance's clan, Clan McFarland, and it turns out that his family sided with Robert the Bruce (remember the guy in Brave Heart who wore the big furs?) and during a battle, assisted in killing my ancestor in the Church of Dumfries in 1306. So much for the throne! Anyway, a very strange connection, I thought.

greeklawgirl 11-28-2001 11:59 PM

I'm proud to be a first-generation Greek-American. My mother's side of the family is from the island of Chios, which is famous for being the birthplace of Homer and is the site of the famous Massacre at Chios (see paintings of Eugene Delacroix). My father's side of the family is from a small mainland village in the province of Evrytania, which is located high in the mountains several hours north of Athens.

Unfortunately, because Greece was under Turkish slavery until the 1800s, we have no real records of any family members past my great-grandparents. My mother came over to America as a toddler. My father emigrated as a young man in the late 60s. He entered the US on RMS Queen Anna Maria.

Sounds like you're a cutie ;)

Now if you can cook some of that "badass food" then you're definitely a winner! :D

aephi alum 11-29-2001 12:25 AM

I am a bona fide mutt :)

My dad is 100% Polish. Explains my stubborn streak ;)

My mom is part Scottish (Clan MacLeod), part Irish, part English, part Portuguese, part Indian (i.e. from India).

My husband's "pedigree" is similarly muttlike - Russian, Austrian/German, and a few things I don't remember.

Mutts are supposed to be the healthiest, though - all those inbred recessive genetic diseases don't take hold - if anything, you're a carrier, but not affected yourself. So, no complaints here. :)

alphachiohmy 11-29-2001 12:39 AM

I am half Italian and half Irish/German. My father's grandparents -both sets- arrived at Ellis Island in New York in the 1910s and 20s. We have traced their names to the registrys on ships. And we still keep in touch with cousins in Rome. My mother's last name is Risinger and maiden name is Stansbury. The Dollinger name is also in our family.

Its funny because I have a darker Italian complexion with bright blue eyes and freckles. So, I look Italian to a point but I have light Irish freckles.

awww...tank u:) And ya, I can cook, learned from my mommy when I was a kid.

ladybug1116 11-29-2001 01:06 AM

I'm mostly Italian. My dad is 100% Italian and it's been confirmed and traced back to the 1700s. My maternal grandmother is 100%Italian but my maternal grandfather is half Hungarian and half Swedish. I didn't pick up any of those traits though--I definitely look Italian. My parents are both first generation Americans--both sets of my grandparents were born in Europe.

SparkliiQTMTSU 11-29-2001 01:50 AM

Both my mom and my dads sides of the family are scottish! I have the Royal Stewart clan in my blood we have some still living in Scottland actually and my dads side is the Mattheson clan!! So Im all sorts of scottish! *an interesting tidbit that doesnt have to do with my heritage* My old house in Michigan*before we moved to TN* was actually a part of the underground railroad which I always thought was kinda neat!! HAHA not like that had anything to do with this topic i just wanted to share!

Suprisingly, a lot of people (including me in the past) mistake "Jewish" as an ethnicty rather than a religion.

LeslieAGD 11-29-2001 10:24 AM

I'm a first generation Cuban American. My parents were both born in Cuba. My mom's side is Cuban and Spanish (5 generations back) and my dad's side is Cuban, Spanish, and there's some French in there (about 6 generations back).

the way i have heard it from jewish friends, it can be an ethnicity and a religion. i'll have to ask and see whats up

xok85xo 11-29-2001 12:12 PM

While judaism can be considered an ethnicity, due to the cultural aspects..but just the way it was stated was like "my dad's family is <fill in blank of COUNTRY>, <fill in blank of COUNTRY> and jewish"..judaism is a religion and a culture, but not a place of origin to be from, or an ethnicity all its own..you can be from a country and be jewish, as in, i am from israel, and i am jewish..but you cannot be jewish as one of your lines of ancestory.

Sorry, this is kind of a sore subject for me, I am jewish, and have had to deal with people who just don't understand.

The1calledTKE 11-29-2001 12:13 PM

On my moms side 1/2 Irish 1/2 Polish

On my dads side mohawk indian and Welch

SSS1365 11-29-2001 12:36 PM

My biological father was from Puerto Rico. I've never met him (and don't care to) so I was never immersed in any of the culture (although I did learn Spanish from a babysitter I had :)). My mom is Polish and French-Canadian. So here I am... a weird mix of Polish, Hispanic, and French-Canadian, but my friends say I look 100% hispanic. Oh, and the Polish side of my family actually can be traced back to royalty... they ruled that area in like the 1300's.

KillarneyRose 11-29-2001 12:40 PM

On my dad's side, I am 100% Italian. From my mom, I am 1/2 Polish (could actually speak Polish fairly fluently as a child, but have long since forgotten since my Nana passed away) and 1/2 Slovenian. Am a Catholic, too, albeit a "lapsed" one

My husband is super W.A.S.P.man (white, anglo-saxon, protestant); all of his ancestors pretty much caught the next boat over after the Mayflower. We joke that we hope our little girls will still be welcome to join the Daughters of the American Revolution despite my diluting their fine English stock

AOPiLaLa 11-29-2001 02:44 PM

I am pretty much a mutt, too. My dad's side of the family is from Welch, Scottish, and English and my mom's side is English and Bulgarian. I got most of the English with me--I am pretty fair skinned, have hair that goes blonde in the sun(or with the help of Mandy, the best hair person EVER!), and cannot hold a tan to save my life. But I have DARK brown eyes and I LOVE feta cheese, olives, and pretty much a lot of other random slavic foods. But I am proud to be a born and raised FLORIDA girl(though I don't live there now)--I think we are a different breed!

Dejajeva 11-29-2001 04:03 PM

Full Irish here.

actually-
here's the actual story.
I was adopted and so I don't know my blood lines...the literal ones, that is. So I figure, I'll make up my own. :)
Which is when I figured I had a supreme love for corned beef and cabbage- AND Irish music...so I just said I'm Irish. It may not be in my blood but it's in my heart and soul!

Love,
Jessica

amycat412 11-29-2001 04:53 PM

Well my dad is 100% French and first generation American, his parents moved here around 1910 and were married in 1922...my dad came along about 25 years later.

My Mom is 75% Irish 25% Swedish-- my grandmother was 100% Irish and Grandfather 50/50 Irish/Swedish. And I'm 8th or 9th generation American on my Mom's side.

SO while we all have mostly dark hair--in the brown and auburn range and either hazel or dark brown eyes--everyone also has this pale skin that freckles and doesn't tan. Except me. LOL I am more olive complected, brown in the sun, never freckle and have the dark hair and eyes--my grandmother always called me "Black Irish"

:)
Amy

damasa 11-29-2001 05:31 PM

I'm 50% Irish from my mother's side. Her roots can be traced back to the early 1500's. I actually have a scroll of all the clans and the clan names and their terroritories in Ireland around this time. Although my bloodline clan wasn't elite, their name and a crest are shown to be in Northern Ireland. :)

My father was born in Germany, but I don't know how far his roots can be traced, we've never really tried, but maybe it's time?!?!

keep it coming.....I find this stuff so interesting. you guys rock :)
I remember one time they had a show dedicated to this topic on NBC.

33girl 11-29-2001 10:17 PM

My mom's side is Dutch, German, Italian & Irish (mostly Italian & Irish). My dad is hardcore 100% German (as is 65-70% of my hometown county). Which means I know the meaning of words like "ach du lieber", "hommi" and "rauschmidt." (those are probably spelled incorrectly)

Hootie 12-07-2001 01:17 AM

PETTINGER = Luxembourg
My great, great grandfather (I believe it was two greats...might be one) came over to the states with his two brothers. Evidently the Pettingers in Luxembourg were rather well off and each brother left with some of the families money to make a new life. My Great Aunt told my Aunt that evidently one of the brothers lost all of his money shortly after coming here and was never heard of again. We have no idea where he went or if there is a line of the family out there.
Anyways...my mom's side is a mixture of German, English and French. My Great Grandma was alive when I was little and I remember her singing German Lullabyes to me. The cute thing is that my Grandma and Grandpa Lierman (my mom's folks) were next door neighbors all their life and then ended up marrying!

POLSKA, BABY!!!!

I am like 75% Polish with a little bit of Swedish thrown in their for kicks. I used to hate my polish last name because no one could say it right but now I have learned to love it. I think its halarious. I have determined that I need to marry a nice polish boy and hypenate our last names to form the coolest uber polish name around. It would be great!

Senusret I 01-12-2005 10:27 PM

Black, White, Native American

I'm not telling the percentages, so there.

Susan_Renee 01-13-2005 11:22 PM

My mom's side:
Some Cherokee Indian and Scotch Irish
Dad's side:
Irish and some type of Indian, but not sure which one.

honeychile 01-13-2005 11:36 PM

I won't post the url for my online family tree! :D

Mother's side: Scots, Irish, English

Dad's side: English, Swiss, German

Redheads in every generation - I had no chance!

DeltAlum 01-13-2005 11:58 PM

Mom's side: Cherokee & a little German.
Dad's side: Anglo Saxon

I swear I thought I posted in this thread years ago when it first came out!

Mom's side is easy. Mom immigrated to Hawai`i in 1973 during the first or second wave of immigration to the United States. Her family has roots in the provinces of Badoc, Ilocos Norte ... the northern islands of the Philippines. I've visited her birthplace only once when I was 3, but we have a school and a hospital named after my great-great-grandfather, one of the men who helped build the town last last century.

My dad's side, not so easy. Born and raised in Na`alehu in 1919 (there was a biiiiiiig age difference between mom and dad, FYI) on the Big Island, it's with him I have my Hawaiian and Japanese roots. In the Hawaiian culture, it's common for families to hanai (give up) their child, often the youngest to a close family member or a close friend of the family. Usually these people are unable to have children. My dad was one of them, and he was given to my grandfather's close childhood friend -- a Filipino/Spanish family, hence my Filipino/Spanish last name.

My father always knew about this, but he didn't think anything of it. After all, this was tradition and the culture was being kept alive despite first the Overthrow, Annexation, and then eventually statehood.

Anyway, my paternal grandfather was 100% Hawaiian (something very rare) who spoke the language fluently. My paternal grandmother was 100% Japanese from Nagano, Japan. They met while working on the sugar plantation.

I already told Killarney Rose this, but my paternal grandpa's MOTHER wasJAILED by the American provisional government (the same ones who Overthrew the Queen) for speaking the native language in public. This happened when she was a teenager. They were cruel to her, but somehow she survived and she refused to give up her native language.

And that's OTW...!

AGDee 01-14-2005 01:18 AM

Father: 100% Sicilian, first generation American
Mother: English, Irish, Scottish, German, French, Dutch, Black Foot.. her family traces back to the Lewis & Clark expedition. An ancestor was accused of murder and had a choice of going to prison or going on the expedition. They didn't think anybody on the expedition would live, so it was like choosing the death penalty. He married a Black Foot while exploring. That's the most interesting thing in my family.

I relate primarily to the Italian culture because it was so strong. My mother's family was too "heinz 57" to maintain any cultural traditions.
