Christmas lights and decorations...Whhhhhyyyyy???????
 

Ya'll people are going crazy with these lights. It seems that every year, folks are fighting trying to get the latest lights.

One year you had the icicle lights, then the rope lights, and all that. :rolleyes:

Then, folks want to take all these lights and decorations home and just mess up everything! You'll see red, purple, green, blue FLASHING lights on ONE side of the house, USA flags lit up, USA lights flashing, then on the OTHER side of the house you see strictly icicle lights, santa and mrs. claus figures lit up, and, and DON'T forget about the sleigh and reindeer with BIG red bows. I'm thinking as I'm driving, PUHLEASE MAKE UP YOUR MIND! :rolleyes:

Have you all seen any hillarious and outrageous homes decorated for the season? Or are you guilty of this, too?

i haven't seen any of these outrageously decorated houses yet this season; however, I know I will. My family (PRAISE THE LORD) doesn't believe in following the latest trend in decorating...so I won't have to worry about the new found AMERICAN pride theme floating around my house...prayerfully it won't be too bad around my neighborhood either.

I''m decorated very elegantly (if I should say so my self). I'm putting one candle in each window w/ a white bulb (obviously the kind you plug in). My christmas tree will be decorated in gold, ivory, and red. I found this centerpiece for my living room table. It's a wreath w/ gold and ivory fixings on it...w/ an ivory candle in the middle. Oh yeah...the wreath on my door will be similar to that of my centerpiece.

I hear ya, just waled by a house before that had the entire nativity scene on one side, then had a cheap plastic snoopy santa like 4 feet from it. STYLE people...think STYLE!

I generally plan out a sceme first and then carry it out, not just randomly. This year is a partiotic motif, but I'm only using sold red, white and blue, not that multicolor tacky stuff.

If I had my own house...I would have the reindeers outside. I absolutely love those :D

I haven't seen anything outrageous...yet!

The Christmas tree in front of the city-county building in downtown Pittsburgh (paid for with our tax dollars, don't cha know) has been decorated in red, white and blue this year. This could conceivably have been done nicely, but the way it turned out is capital T-A-C-K-Y.

Maybe you need to head up to Maryland. There is this house that I pass by on the way to the doctor's office that is decorated in the middle of November. The ENTIRE HOUSE is decorated. There are the icicle lights, the regular multi-colored lights, the sleigh with Santa and his eight reindeer, individual reindeer on the grass, nativity lights, angels, more Santas, did I mention LIGHTS:eek: , UP AND DOWN THE STAIRWELL. It is too scary to imagine. The magic word is subtlety!

Every year a couple of us ride down this street in my neighborhood (SBR) just to laugh. Whats so funny about this street is that everybody is related and have lights and decorations all around their houses (even on the broken down cars in the yard :eek: ).

So it's horribly tacky, but this kind of trashy family has a GIANT inflatable penguin in their front yard that lights up, and I LOVE it. My parents told me it was too tacky and we couldn't get one, but then last weekend when I was coming home from a late night out, I noticed cute little light-up penguin stakes in our front yard! :)

A lot of our neighbors do get really overdecked, which is sad because their houses aren't that big (most of them are ranches) and they just look overwhelmed. We usually just do regular lights around the windows and on the trees in the front yard, then we have the "nice" upstairs in our living room (the real tree with all the keepsake ornaments) and then downstairs we have the "tacky" tree, which is a faux one with the goofy ornaments.

This family in my APARTMENT COMPLEX has the inflatable Penguin. :eek: NOT HOME, BUT APT. COMPLEX.

Where did they put it, inside? :confused:

And speaking of apartment complexes, my neighbors to the left have taken it there: they set up an XL Santa and ONE reindeer, a wreath and some lights on their 3x3 balcony. I'm like, they are tryin to do too much....making me look bad with my dead plant & little sad lawn chair on my balcony.

I really like the houses that use ONLY icicles or all white lights lined up very neat. It's simple, beautiful, and elegant. When I get a house I want to do the white lights (in moderation) and a black nativity scene in front. There is always something magical about the nativity scene.

Outside on the side of the building (there isn't alot of room). They also have these reindeer on stakes. :o

Sketchy! How big are their reindeer? Our penguins are pretty small - maybe like 8" high? My mom only turns them on when I'm home - last night I sent her an IM asking her how they were doing and she said they were crying because they missed me. :p

I think I'm going to stay at my apt over Christmas break so I can study for my LSAT without distractions, so I might get those little candles for my windows - I have a big studio apartment that's really old so I think they'd be kind of cute.

The reindeer are about 8". The penguin is about 4-5 ft. .

All the tacky lights I ever need to see are in my neighboorhood...

The house across the street from us always has a light up Santa (on a sleigh with reindeer) on the roof, another Santa with reindeer here and there on the lawn, a nativity scene, angels, carolers, and various layers of lights in all kinds of different colors, some icicles, some chain, some regular.. some blink, some go in a line. These people are across the street, so the blinding light from this spectacle is always shining through our windows at night. About 3 years ago (every year, they add something new) they had the nerve to set the lights to music... how trifling is that? I swear, I can't get any sleep because it's SO bright and loud!

The house behind us caught on fire 2 years ago from the crazy amount of lights. :eek: She had her dog house decorated, her clothesline, her tool shed, and her POWER LINES, as well as the house... she was doing too much. But don't you know she kept them up, and came back strong again last year?

Other neighboors have decorated...
above ground swimming pools, cars in the yard that no longer move, backyard fences (chain link ones, for dogs), random trees and bushes in the yard, with ornaments like Christmas trees, birdbaths, and fountains (but why do you have a full-out, light up fountain in the front yard of your 2-bedroom, 1-story house?)

is it just here that people wanna decorate EVERYTHING in the yard?

I think that Christmas brings out the Griswald gene in too many people.

There is a man up the street from me a few blocks that has enough red lighting on his fence to light the street.I think the city could shut off the street lights 3 blocks in either direction and it would still be well lit.I have a seven year old in my house and even she knows what is too much. I have a small ranch house and I have 1 single strand of multicolor lights that go the length of the side facing the street and you can see my Christmas tree in the window.Nothing tacky at my house.

Picture this..I was just in Wally World(Wal-mart)last nite and as I was in the toy aisle(sp?), i heard a code something and i saw booko cops running toward a crowd. All i heard was B*#@h i had it first, No u lying h%e i had it first. U saw me with it in my buggy..All of this was followed by hitting and more hitting. I'm talking about str8 up fighting.Two grown azz women..Do u wanna know why they were fighting?
One lady took a pack of icicles lights(the lights that hang down) out of the other lady buggy and their wasn't anymore in the store.:rolleyes: :D :confused: I was laughing so hard...is it really that serious?:confused:

Now, you know I'm trying to picture this, right? Outside the building where? Like near THEIR door or downstairs in front of the whole building???

And someone needs to tell me what a penguin has to do with Christmas? Cuz I feel like GeekyPenguin lucked up on this one. :p

One thing I don't like is how people put ribbons on the front of their cars. I think that is so tacky. But not as much as WREATHS. Now THAT is the tackiest. To me.

Well, I guess I'm going to have to take a pic of it. The thing is the man PUTS THE PENGUIN OUT EVERY EVENING. Then, (I guess) before he goes to bed, he brings it in. :O

HEHE! Our penguins were defective and wouldn't stay lit, so we took them back.

And I really don't know what the penguins have to do with Christmas, other than that they are wintery/snowy. I think a penguin creche scene would be highly entertaining, but I don't know how the parentals would feel about that.

There's a family up the street from my aunt in Maryland that had a family of penguin carolers outside their house, but these were big light-up things (like 2-3 feet tall or so)
But these people also decorate for Halloween and Thanksgiving... so they're a special case.

Oh man I would seriously pee.

Some of our neighbors have gone WAAAY over the top this year, and I think I'll be taking some pictures once finals are over. ;)

i question those people's sanity every year!

You know my mind is GONE from finals because I just stared at this for like 20 minutes thinking "I think wreaths are pretty classy decorations" and then I realized you meant on cars.

I think they're only appropriate for large SUVs that are the size of my apartment anyway. :p

What about the 18-wheelers?

They are permitted a wreath on the front and perhaps a little tree on the roof of a cab - or they can wrap the whole trailer up like a package! :)
