SciFi Appreciation Thread

So I was doing some searching to see if there were any recent threads on scifi, no luck. I would love to find some fellow scifi nerds on here, because I love to talk about it and I'm also looking for some new shows to watch.

The series that I like
- Battlestar Galactica
- Firefly
- Stargate (all franchises, but I liked Universe the best)
- Star Trek: TNG
- Caprica

I grew up watching Dr. Who but lost track of the show after David Tennant left, so I have literally seen all of the doctors ever except for the new one. Recommendations?

cheerfulgreek 11-23-2011 12:31 PM

This is kind of like the Geek Thread theat DaemonSeid started. Awesome thread.:p

I'm a huge Trekkie. I have every season on DVD. Not so much the original, but the Next Generation and so forth. I'm like the biggest nerd ever. Anything related to astrophysics is right down my alley. I always like watching Star Trek because they don't leave any of the realism out. Thanks for starting this thread.:)

Psi U MC Vito 11-23-2011 01:18 PM

By Battlestar I assume you mean the new one and not the old Rattlestar. Never got into Caprica, and I kind of liked SGU but the jury is still out. It was good but too like BSG in my opinion. DS9 is my favorite of the Star Treks. I also really really like 2 shows on the old SciFi channel Warehouse 13 and Sanctuary. I also really really liked First Wave from years ago.

V

barbino 11-23-2011 01:57 PM

I like V. I also really like the original Star Trek and all of its spin-offs. Next Generation is my favorite; it takes the original just a step further. My husband and I like to look for the theology/philosophy references in all of them ("Live long and prosper" "Resistance is futile" etc.) The Vulcans especially interest me, and I think that the tribbles should have had their own show.
There was a Star Trek Convention out here at a convention center and we ran into some "Klingons" -- we still laugh about it.

sigtau305 11-23-2011 03:34 PM

I'm a Huge Trekkie Fan. I'm more into Star Trek: TOS, Star Trek: The Animated Series, All the Star Trek Movies and TNG.

I've seen the Battlestar Original series. I have never seen the reboot edition.

Stargate was good.

Dr. Who is also good. I did caught the last season that was on Syfy.

DSTRen13 11-23-2011 08:46 PM

TV series I like:
BSG (the reimagined series, not the original)
Firefly
V
Caprica
Eureka
X-Files

I've never really gotten into Star Trek, and I just don't get Dr. Who ...

IrishLake 11-23-2011 09:15 PM

Do you include fantasy in the Sci Fi genre? Or just futuristic?

I'm a big Star Wars fan (the original movie series, not so much the prequals). I also was an X Files fanatic back in the day.

If fantasy is included, I'm all about LOTR, The Outlander Series (by Diana Gabaldon), The Martian Chronicles, and Harry Potter.

NinjaPoodle 11-24-2011 12:54 AM

ST: Next Generation
X Files

Ditto on all of this!

preciousjeni 11-24-2011 09:33 AM

If it's SciFi, there's a pretty good chance I'll love it. Right now, I'm making my way back through all the episodes of Star Trek. I've finished up TNG and am currently working on DS9. Next up will be Voyager followed by (gasp) Enterprise and finally TOS.

Some of my favorites over time have been Dr. Who (the sexiest SciFi series ever made), X-Files, The 4400, Eureka, Torchwood, Sanctuary, Lexx, and the first Stargate for tv.

One of the major themes I appreciated (appreciate? Aren't they still running it?) about Torchwood was the overt homosexuality and its acceptance.

I feel like Warehouse 13 was too predictable, as was V (the tv show I mean).

In addition, there have been a bunch of miniseries that I have loved, but I can't ever remember what they're all called.

I love this thread! Hopefully one of you will turn me onto something I don't know about.

IrishLake 11-24-2011 09:41 AM

OH! I forgot Fringe. I love that show. I haven't watched it in about 2 seasons though, so I'm way behind. I'll have to watch it all online at some point.

OMG Fringe is in my DVD player as we speak! Love it! I think it's clever how they use colors in the intro to define where they are. That's all I'll say in case others aren't familiar with the premise of the show.

KDCat 11-24-2011 12:06 PM

Favorite science fiction:

BSG (new)
Caprica
BSG (original)
and pretty much any Gibson novel you can name.

I liked Firefly, but it's not my favorite, although the actors are charming. I'm really fond of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog. I thought the most recent Captain America movie was terrific. I haven't seen X-Men: First Class, yet.

Favorite urban fantasy:
Buffy
the Dresden Files

Favorite historical fantasy:
The King's Peace and the King's Name
Devil's Engine and Devil's Tower
College of Magic

The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie is terrific. The Three Musketeers movie with Oliver Platt was also terrific.

CougADPi 11-24-2011 12:25 PM

Last week I was not feeling good and anticipating a sick day I checke dout the Doctor Who DVD from the library. I sat and watched all six episodes that I had in one day. I am now rather obsessed with that show. It was so good and I am embarassed it took me this long to realize it.

I love Star Trek having grown up watching TNG and DS9. To this day I still have a geek crush on Wesley Crusher/Wil Wheaton. My husband got me hooked on Star Wars when we started dating (I know, I am late to the party on a lot of this).

I loved X Files, the original Stargate (haven't watched any of the others) and will miss Eureka terribly!

victoriana 11-24-2011 01:29 PM

I'm so glad I'm not the only one to love SciFi, I'm going to have to check out some of these shows. Which ones are scary? I'm kind of a chicken :P

Were you watching old Doctor Whos or new ones? Old ones are good, new ones are good, I wish I had a TARDIS.

CougADPi 11-24-2011 02:01 PM

New ones. I started with the first episodes of Doctor 9. I love him, and can't wait to see the others (waiting for the DVDs to come back to the library so I can watch more!!)

AZ-AlphaXi 11-24-2011 02:08 PM

If available, the old ones are good as well. I especially like the e-space set and the key to time set.

Books. They're way better than the show. I have to admit that I watched the show and thought it was passable, and picked up the books, because I just needed some passable fantasy to read while traveling. Right around Book 4, though, Butcher really gets rocking and now I'm sort of obsessed.

Psi U MC Vito 11-25-2011 03:15 PM

It's funny, I actually started with Dead Beat and loved it so much I decided to start from the beginning. I do agree that the first books are a little strained but still quite readable.

Yeah, they're okay. I started reading at the beginning and liked them. Somewhere around "White Knight" or "Proven Guilty," though, I really fell in love with the world. A lot of people complain about how Butcher being sexist, but I don't agree. I think Harry is a bit of a sexist, but Butcher writes some great women characters. Molly, Susan, Charity, Murphy, Luccio, and Laura Raithe are some of my favorite characters in any fantasy setting, ever. I like that Butcher has taken the time to think about how his female characters see each other and has clearly thought out their relationships to each other, in addition to their relationships to Harry. They pass the Bechdel test on a regular basis.

Huge sci-fi fan here. :)

I first got hooked on sci-fi when I was six years old and came across Star Trek: TOS. Star Trek: TNG premiered when I was in middle school. It was all downhill from there. :p

My favorite sci-fi TV series include:
- Star Trek: TOS, TNG, animated, Voyager, and Enterprise (not so much DS9)
- Babylon 5
- Farscape
- Stargate: SG-1 (I also liked Atlantis and SGU, but SG-1 is my favorite)
- Doctor Who (classic and new - although I have a small quibble with the new series - the Doctor is NOT supposed to be hot! :p )
- Firefly
- Warehouse 13
- Sanctuary
- Eureka
- Fringe
- V (both series)
- Battlestar Galactica
- Caprica

I almost forgot... has anyone else seen the BBC show "Being Human"? I love it. :)

I have seen the American version on SyFy. it's not bad. I need to see the beginning to get a understanding of the storyline.

Did anyone notice that author Anne McCaffrey had died last Monday? I always wanted to see her Pern series made into a movie, and now with CGI it's very possible.

I had no idea she'd died. :( I agree with you about turning the Pern series into a movie. I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet, unless she specifically said no.

Agree with this. I was so obsessed with those books in middle school/early high school.

I have heard that there was an attempt to turn the Pern books into a movie or tv show (can't remember which) but that Anne McCaffrey didn't like the sets/script etc and withdrew permission. I would love to see the Pern books made into a movie.

Psi U MC Vito 11-26-2011 11:48 PM

I don't know about turning Pern into a movie. A series maybe, but all the heavy politics involved might turn off viewers. I know that's the main issue I have with the books.

ElieM 11-27-2011 08:27 PM

I don't think the forced sex and domestic violence themes would go over well in a movie of PERN. And making the more recent books into movies, where everyone dies at the end would also be a downer.

"The Trouble With Tribbles". To this day I can quote the Klingon bar scene from memory. :o

I really enjoyed the DS9 episode where they went back in time. They ended up using a lot of the original footage to make it more genuine and the episode included the explanation for why Klingons back in the day lost their ridges.

One of my favorite episodes across all Star Trek shows was on TNG when everyone devolved and Worf became that monster.

One that stands out was "Where no man has gone before". The best line from that: "You must kill Gary Mitchell".

from the ST: The Animated Series: "One of our planets is missing" the best action episode ever.

victoriana 11-28-2011 11:38 PM

I just finished watching Caprica. It definitely seemed longer than a season to me. I don't see what was wrong with it. Sure, it was VERY different from BSG, but in a good way. SyFy channel must be stupid. They have cancelled way too many good shows before their time, namely SGU and Caprica. With no new Stargate franchise on the horizon and no hope of rebooting SGU, and with BSG: Blood and Chrome severely delayed/possibly shelved, things are looking pretty bleak for me. I'm so depressed.
