What Do You Call Your Grandparents?
I thought I'd made a thread like this before! Several GCers know that I called my grandfather "Bimbo" and they think it's funny. One of my pledge sisters called her grandparents Per and Ganh. One local family calls their grandmas Red Granny and Blue Granny.
What do you call your grandparents? I am GrandRose and my husband is Grand___ (his first name).:) |
I loved my "Grammie" and "Pop-Pop"!!!!
|
my grandparents were grand(mother)(father)___ name except for my mother's mother who refused to be called grandmother so we called her Nonie which was a diminutive of her name Leona. Came to be told later that that was a variation of grandmother in Italian.
My mother is Obbie to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren (and SILs) , that being what the oldest grandchild came up with. :=) |
My mother's parents were always Grandma and Grandpa. But my cousins and I call my father's mother, Yeya.
My father and my uncles referred to their mother as "la vieja." It wasn't mean-spirited; it was always out of love! And when I was a little girl I couldn't pronounce it, so Yeya just stuck. |
Mom's side: Grandma and Grandpa
Dad's side: Grandma and Pop-pop :) |
Mine were grandma and grandpa.
My kids call husband's parents Abuelo and Abuela. My dad is Papa, my husband is Papí, and my mom is Bama (my daughter started that before she could say "grandma" and it stuck). |
Mawmaw and Pawpaw
yeah, so what!:p |
Although I never met my father's parents they were referred to as Bubbie and Zadeh. My mother's mom was Nonnie. No name for my mother's father.
My kids call my parents Gramma and Papa while they call my ex FIL and his wife Honey and Honeybear. They call my ex's mother Grandma _____(her name) although she died before either of them were born. DaffyKD |

One thing we've learned from many grandparents: if you have a name you really do or don't want the kids to call you, set the groundwork early. Since I didn't, I'm lucky that they started with GrandRose because I've heard some weird grandparent names. |
I use the Spanish terms of Abuela and Abuelo or Abuelita or 'uelo
|
Maternal grandparents were Grandma & Grandpa.
Paternal grandfather was Papa and maternal grandmother is Mimi. (She did not want us calling them Abuelo y Abuela cause she thought it made her sound old :D) I hope that if/when I have grandchildren I can be Abuela/Abuelita. |
My dad's parents were Granddaddy and Nona and my mom's mother was Granny. My mom's father passed before he had any grandchildren, so we just refer to him by his first name or Mr. LastName.
|
When I was born, my living grandparents were my paternal grandmother and my maternal grandfather. My grandmother was "Grandmommy." Everyone called my grandfather "Grandaddy" except for me. I called him "Grandpa." Well, when I was older. When I was little, I found out what I thought was his first name was actually his middle name. No one ever used his first name so, when I read it on his suitcase tag, it was like I found out a huge secret. To a 6yo, that's super exciting so I called him by it and he let me. :o
I want my grandchildren to call me Madea. ETA: Oh and I just remembered. My grandmother's last husband was called "Uncle Firstname." I have NO idea why we had to call him uncle...maybe because he wasn't any of our grandfathers? IDK. |
Both of my grandfathers died LONG before I was born.
My paternal grandmother was Grandmama Lulu and my maternal grandma is Nana My great grandmother on my mother's side was called Big Mama |
Grandmother/Grandaddy; Grandmother/Grandfather. We were very formal like that.
When my parents became grandparents, they weren't down with being called "Grandma/Grandpa," so they have pet names based on their real names. My niece and nephew call my dad "Daddy [his first name]," and I doubt any man I marry will be down with that. So it's likely that my kids will probably go to the Grandma/Grandpa route. |
Paternal great-grandparents - Mama Craft. Inker (from Enoch) and Memaw
Paternal grandparents - Mimi and Gramps Maternal great-grandmother - Grandmother Blankey Maternal grandparents - Grandmama and Daddy Jack My parents are called Grandbob and Gammy (Yes, my mother is a Gamma Phi!). |
My paternal grandfather died when my father was really young. But my paternal grandmother I called Grandma. My maternal grandparents I call Nannie and Papa
|
My mom's mom was Grandma Nick (Nick was part of her last name).
My dad's parents were Gramma and Grampa (my last name) or Gramma Ann or Gram (my Grampa died when we were still quite young, so really we called him *gurgle gurgle mumble something*. |
Dad's dad: Died when I was like a month old.
Dad's mom: Grandma LastName. (more formal as we are not super close. She has like 70 grandkids and my brother and I lived 3,000 mi away from her most of our lives.) Mom's mom: Granny. Mom's dad: Granddad. |
My maternal grandparents were called Nana & Pop's
|
I call my parents' parents Opa and Oma (they're Dutch and it's Dutch for Grandpa and Grandma).
My sister's kids call them (well, her actually, both by grandfathers passed away, as well as one of my grandmothers) Super-Oma (Super-Grandma) as not to confuse her with my parents who they call Opa and Oma. |
Quote:
As for mom's side, just regular old Grandma and Grandpa. |
My brothers and I called both sets of grandparents grandma and grandpa. My kids call both grandfathers Papa. They call my husband's stepmom GrammyGram and my mom Mimi.
|
Paternal: Grandma & Grandpa
Maternal: Gammie & Gampie |
Maternal great-grandmother: Busia (Polish nickname - pronounced BOO-shuh)
My maternal grandparents: Granny & Grandpa Paternal grandmother: Grandma (My paternal grandfather died before I was born.) I miss all of them terribly. =( |
I was fortunate to have 3 pairs of grandparents growing up, and 2 pairs are still alive. Two pairs are Gramma and Grampa, the third pair is Oma and Grampa.
|
This is such a sweet thread.
My maternal grandparents were Grandma Sunny and Papa. Sunny was the nickname that Papa gave her when she came to the U.S. from Belgium, and everyone called her Sunny. My paternal grandfather was also Papa, and Grandma Kitty (short for Kathryn) is still living. My kids say Grandma First name and Papa First name for both sets of grandparents. I always wondered why we didn't use first names for our Papas, so I made sure to use their names. |
My maternal grandparents were Goka (closest I came to Grandma, and it stuck, as my grandmother didn't want to be called Grandma/Grandmother anyways) and Grandad.
Paternal grandparents: Grandmother and Grandfather (they were a bit more formal). I loved them all dearly. My kids' maternal grandparents: Grandma and Grandpa. My kids' paternal grandparents: Mama and Papa. They were/are wonderful grandparents. |

My maternal great-grandmother was around until I was 13 and we all called her Busia. I'm kinda hoping that when my parents are grandparents we can call them Busia & Abuelo. :D |
Paternal = Nana and Nanu (variations of Italian)
Maternal= Grandma and Grandpa My kids- Called my mom Grandma, My dad and his wife are Grandpa firstname and Grandma firstname, their dad's father is Grandpa lastname, his mom passed away before I met him. |
Alright this is going to get in-depth.
I'm the youngest grandchild on my dad's side of the family. My dad's mother is Grandlady. Yes, we are southern, haha. It fits here though, she is a southern lady through and through. My dad's father was Papa, and his new wife was just her first name. My mom's mother died before I was born, but my granddad (as we called him) re-married, and we called his new wife Grandma Jean. The rest of my family weirdly called my granddad "Beebop". I have no idea why. I refused as a kid, :p I call my step-grandparents Oma and Opa since they're German. My dad is called "Pop" by my nephews and nieces. Not sure how I feel about it yet...My step-mom is called Omi (since she's German) and HATES it. It's stuck now though.... |
My paternal grandparents were retired diplomats, so there was quite a bit of formality when it came to everything about them, from what we called them to how we conducted ourselves during meals and beyond.
They were "formally" Grandmother [Last Name] and Granddaddy [Last Name]. However, my brother and I sometimes called them "Ma and Daddy-O," which was my father/aunt's nickname for them. My maternal grandparents are, well, country. We're talking about square-dancing, pie-making, fruit canning, deer hunting, Georgia farmers. Both are still living, in large part because they had their children very young. My grandmother was still a teenager when my mother was born. We have always called them Granny and Grandpa. ETA: On an odd note, my paternal grandfather's mother was called "Mommee" pronounce mah-MEE, with the accent on the second syllable (as opposed to Mommy, where the accent is on the first syllable). |
Quote:
Maternal Grandmother: MAH-Maw Her late husband: Paw-Paw Late Maternal Grandfather: Granddad His late wife: OMG I can't remember.... did we just call her by her first name? My grandmother's step-mother was called GiGi, I supposed for Great Grandmother. I was not raised by my father or any of his family, so I just call(ed) them by the first names when I referred to them. |
Also, since my uncle has become a grandfather, I have decided to title him the new Paw-Paw.
|
My mom's side of the family:
Grandmother: Big Mama Grandfather: Big Daddy My Dad's side of the family: Grandmother: Grandmommy Grandfather: Paw Paw |
Some real cute names in this thread. Three of my grandparents were already gone before I was born and I only met my paternal grandfather twice before he died when I was six. The whole "grandparent" thing is a foreign concept to me. I missed out! :(
|
I called my mother's parents Grandma and Grandpa. I called my father's father Grandpa. (My father's mother passed away before I was born, so I never knew her, but I refer to her as Grandma.)

Mom's Parents: Grandma and Papa
Dad's Mom & Stepdad: Grandma K and Papa Nick Dad's Dad and Stepmom (never met them): Grandpa A and Grandma A Now that my parents are grandparents (thanks to my sister), they are Amma and Pop-Pop (my nephew gave them their names). His other grandparents are Grandpa and Grandma. He calls me Yaya and my husband Coco because he couldn't say our names when he was younger (I don't know where Yaya came from) and he thinks everyone has a Yaya. |
Maternal:
My Mom's Mother: Madea My Mom's Father: nothing, never said a word to him My Mom's Grandfather (paternal): Pawpaw My Mom's Grandmother (maternal): Aunt Mary...long story, but she had a lot of nieces and nephews and it just stuck Paternal: My Dad's Mom: Grandmommy My Dad's Stepfather: Daddy Bill My Dad's Father: Granddaddy My Dad's Grandmother (maternal) Big Mama |
