Nor'easter - October 2011
 

For those of you in the northeast, I'm sure you've heard that the snow is coming your way, if it hasn't made it to you already.

Here at my house in northern Jersey, we've lost electricity. We have huge branches down all over our yard, many of which are leaning up against power lines (yes, that's how long/large some of these branches are). And my mom's car is currently sitting under a huge branch.. We're hoping insurance will cover the damage.

If you're caught in this storm, STAY HOME!

I just lose the cable. Still have electricity. The weight of the snow has all the trees by me leaning over. Some trees are leaning over into the highways. The road conditions are very dangerous. Visible not that good. A good advice is to stay home.

I'm so relieved that I flew home from Jersey on Thursday. I have a co-worker who was supposed to fly back today and two co-workers who flew home last night but have to go back tomorrow night! I feel quite lucky :)

No power since yesterday. Several limbs came crashing down just feet from the pool, and our cherished kwanzaa cherry tree in the front split right down the middle. :(

It is just a complete mess here.

Ugh. Still no power. Could be 10 days to two weeks. Almost 90% of my town is without power. Got to take a hot shower at my sister's today and cooked up a bunch of meat so that we didn't waste it. Had my first hot meal in two days.

Been here all day and waiting for hubby, who is waiting in line for a generator at Home Depot an hour away, to pick me up. Family is great and I am thankful, but the house is really noisy with kids and dogs.

The gas fireplace keeps us and the kitties warm, so we at least have that going.

We got it back tonight, so that's good. But our town looks like a tornado ran through it, but didn't hit any of the buildings. I had to turn around on one street this morning that I usually take to work because there were trees and power lines/poles down all over the road. Many roads are closed. I'm actually surprised they still had trick-or-treating tonight with the way the streets looked

I am in central CT - my town around 90% w/o power. The power company posted estimates for a whole bunch of towns but ours is not on it yet. Could be another 10 days. The town does have dozens of downed lines wrapped in trees. I personnally have never seen anyhing like it.

Just want to be able to make a hot morning coffee and get some laundry done.

My family in central CT's town is 100% out of power still. I'm in eastern/ central MA and I'm still out of power as well with an estimated restore of Thursday evening. I would love to wake up and have the house temp above 40 degrees.... or be able to shower or flush a toilet (well water) but it is what it is and I'm glad it isn't the dead of winter and going below zero degrees at night.

I'm in central CT as well. No power since Saturday night, estimated to come back Sunday night.

The power companies were so ill-prepared for this, it makes you wonder what they were thinking.

There are several towns in NJ still without electricity and water as of today. These towns were told that power will be restored by late Friday night or early Saturday morning, which means that the power companies really do not know when power will be restored. There are way too many trees down in the state. There are branches literately hanging the the wires waiting to knap.

In my hometown of Simsbury (CT) school's been cancelled for the week and the HS has become a shelter. Except for those with generators, no one I know there has power yet. I've seen pictures of the town and if it weren't for all the buildings still intact, you'd think an F3 twister blew through, there are so many trees uprooted.

I am flying into Boston on early Saturday morning. Are any of you in the Boston area, and can you tell me if the power is on there?

AFAIK, Boston is fine. It's more Worcester area and further west and south that's an issue. I lost power for about 30 seconds.

Still no power. The town is somewhere in the 60+ percent range, without power. Estimated to come back by Sunday 11:59pm. This is truly awful. We don't sleep well (the fireplace, the only heat resource, is downstairs in the living room), we lost all of our food, and I have lost over $1500 worth of medication that is supposed to stay at a certain temperature. We've ordered out 3 times this week, from the only place in town that has electricity and delivers. I keep having to run to the car to charge my phone which has my only internet connection.

I am trying not to complain, but it's really tough to go without electricity. Even a generator can only run certain things for a certain amount of time.

Day six of no power. I really don't know if we'll even have power by the estimate of Sunday night.

We got power on Saturday night/early Sunday morning. There are tons of areas in CT that are still out of power. Goodluck to everyone recovering from the storm.

We got power on Saturday. It was such a relief, but I still have friends without power. They were told Tuesday or Wednesday. We have been trying to catch up on everything - replacing food, filing insurance claims, getting the rest of the laundry done and put away, getting paperwork/bills/phone calls done, etc. It's like we lost an entire week. We're both exhausted, hadn't slept well, and just want to get back on track.

I'm in Fairfield County, CT. I was very fortunate in that I only lost power for 36 hours.

On Saturday evening, my husband decided to start a fire in our wood-burning fireplace, as we had neither power nor heat. This is how we learned that we have some sort of blockage in the chimney - the smoke came back into the house, filling it and setting off the smoke alarm. The house still reeks of smoke.

On Sunday afternoon, when we still had no power, we spoke with my parents (who had power) and they invited us and our kitten to stay overnight with them. So we packed a couple of changes of clothes, our toiletries, the cat's feeding station, food, litterbox, and litter, and the cat himself (thank God for SUVs with fold-down rear seats!) and headed for my parents' house. (As it happened, our power was restored Sunday evening.) There was nothing like that first hot shower after a day and a half of no power, no heat, and no water (hot OR cold).

On Monday, we ordered a generator. LOL

I know people who are still without power, and all CL&P will tell anyone is basically "it could be a while".

BTW, ree-Xi (and everyone else who lost food), try filing a claim with your homeowner's or renter's insurance for the spoiled food. My parents lost power for a few days following Tropical Storm Irene, and they lost a lot of food as a result. Turns out their homeowner's policy covered them for $500 for spoiled food, less a $100 deductible. They got their $400 check pretty quickly too. It didn't totally cover what they'd lost, but it eased the pain somewhat.

Thanks for that info, we were considering contacting insurance about it, but didn't have a chance to do so yet.
