So, What are the Kids Wearing These Days?
When I joined GreekChat in 2001, the typical sorority girl outfit consisted of things like this:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...se/tiffany.jpg The ubiquitous "Return to Tiffany" bracelet (wow, that's pretty ugly now that I look back at it) http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3.../katespade.jpg The Kate Spade microfiber bag; preferably the boxy one with the flap that came over the top. Yes, I had one. Not sure where it went, though. I think I may have forced it on kddani when she was in law school and we were at a GC gathering. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...arciabrady.jpg Long, unlayered hair flat ironed within an inch of its life http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...oritypants.jpg Those black, stretchy pants that weren't quite leggings. Known as "bitch pants" or "sorority girl pants" Does anyone else even remember these things? LOL So, what is it that every sorority girl needs here in 2011? |
"Frat tanks" God help us all.
I showed my mom a picture of my whole chapter + new members on bid day and she said we looked like a swim team. We were wearing black frat tanks and shorts. Most of us had sunglasses on, too. She was right. |
I was just lamenting over the black stretchy pants the other day. I so miss those. They were perfect for college!
Nowadays it's all about the "jeggins" which aren't half bad. The ones from Express feel like pajamas, they are so soft! |
Pictures, please!! :) I am old and I don't know what a frat tank is! lol

It's an oversized tank that is not fitted at all, unflattering to most body types lol |

In California frat tanks (and oversized tees) with Norts (nike running shorts) were very popular a year or so ago. I know from friends who go to SEC schools they're quite popular there as well. In winter it was leggings. |
I was in college 2003-2007.
North Face fleece jacket black leggings Uggs Vera Bradley/Vineyard Vines/lettered tote Tiffany jewelry I may have been oblivious, but I don't think Lilly really caught on at UMD until after I graduated. |
^^^Same for me (2002-2006.) That's still pretty accurate here except for the Tiffany jewelry part. Northface/Uggs/tote.
Letter shirts have changed a little since then. When I was active it was the block letters on the 3/4 sleeve baseball tee, now it's the v-neck with 3/4 sleeve. |
My daughter was in college from 06-10. The girls dressed VERY preppy: Lily Pulitzer, Vera Bradley, Sperrys, Vineyard Vines clothes and tote bags, North Face, etc . The men also tended to dress in very classic styles. Not a lot of jeans were worn at this school by either sex. I saw very few stitched letter shirts, instead tons of t- shirts to commemorate major school events as well as epic social events that were put on annually by the same group each time ie Christmas in the Country party was always hosted at XYZ.
My youngest is now a senior so we have been visiting colleges left and right over the last couple of years. Several seemed to have the identical dress code as his sister's university. It could be because these are all southern schools. |
I'm a high schooler (as you know), and these are a few samples from my unofficial school uniform:
Girls love their booty shorts... http://s7d1.scene7.com/is/image/anf/...?$holCategory$ ...or Victoria's Secret yoga pants (despite the fact that they're clearly not headed to a yoga class) that show of those sexy camel toes and panty lines... http://media.victoriassecret.com/pro...29/V318005.jpg. On top, they act as walking advertisements by wearing fitted logo-tees that are made in Taiwan and sold for $20 more than they're worth. The shirts are artfully arranged to show off the maximum amount of cleavage and belly that the relatively modest shirt allows. http://s7d1.scene7.com/is/image/anf/...?$holCategory$ Ugg-ly as they are, Ugg boots are incredibly comfortable. http://demandware.edgesuite.net/aaff...815-NAVY_2.jpg In an effort to make themselves look as unappealing as possible, they cake on their CoverGirl foundation and line their eyes heavily. As far as hair goes, they love to straighten their hair until it's practically burned off or do the absolutely disgusting and wet-looking "scrunched" hair style. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...JR_r765-l4Kul0 |
^^^^About the shorts, my brother is a HS junior. I recently went to one of his football games (this is October in Ohio) and I was really surprised by the length of some of the girl's shorts.
This is not me trying to be all "these young kids need to get off my lawn" because I'm not THAT old (just 26) and I have worn short shorts before, but I wore them to the beach, and they still covered the "cheeks." If I can see the inside of your pocket dangling out of the front of your shorts, they're not shorts, hun. They're undies. |

Here in the Midwest we do things a little differently than down south. You won't spot Lilly Pulitzer or Vineyard Vines hardly at all. I would bet that only a handful of people know of those brands up here. Very few of the guys dress "fratty" here. You'll see a few in button downs and ties with a nice sweater and khakis over it, but only a few. Typical sorority girl uniform:
Jeans (American Eagle or Levi's, always medium or dark wash) North Face fleece jacket Vera Bradley Letters (most often on American Apparel v-necks and cardigans. If it's not a cardigan, wear a cardigan over it) Bows Sperry's Uggs Yoga pants Leggings Thank god frat tanks and neon haven't caught on here yet. Shh, don't tell them! I'm cool with the graphic tees on American Apparel v-necks. |

Midwest here as well.
Letters on V necks, Leggings. Sperry's Flannel (I love this trend.) Neon is catching on though. |

Yep, the v-necks seem to be picking up around here. Another thing I've noticed this year that's popular on my campus are vertical letters (like the white cardigan in the AOII Emporium). I haven't seen any stitched vertical letters here (yet), but my chapter has gotten crafty this year and they used iron-on transfers on brightly colored (possibly v-neck, I don't remember) shirts. I don't have pictures, but I'd really like to get around to making one of my own... Some women on my campus wear skinny jeans and ballet flats religiously. In terms of "comfy" attire, it seems to be athletic shorts/baggy sweatpants. Either that, or I just don't notice the more streamlined yoga pants. Personally, I don't wear sweats to class because I don't see how hard it is to pull on a pair of clean jeans, and mine aren't horridly uncomfortable. That's me though, to each their own. :) |
when I was working at Oklahoma, I seriously had to work on my not staring. I can't believe how different style is/was from when I was in university (which, let us note, was 08 for graduate school and 07 for undergrad!). I don't get the Nike Shorts trend, which was huge at OU. When the summer orientation camps came through my department, it was like the Boston Marathon starting line. I don't get it (well, OK, I do, because it is a million degrees in Oklahoma, but still...)
Ditto on the "shorts so short I can see your dupa". At that point, they are not shorts, they're very uncomfortable underwear with pockets. I have to take a minute and lament the North Face Denali. If you want a nice fluffy fleece to wear under a jacket, awesome. But if you're looking for actual warmpth...it's not the thing you're after. It's not windstopper, it's not water resistant, and if you've got a dog or cat it is a permanent hair catcher. Let me talk to you about an actual jacket that would give you all of the above and more for the same price or less. |

The hair with a wet scrunch look isn't bad though...but I guess I'm old. I have ex-boyfriends that are grandfathers now. (They've got in touch with me through Facebook.) |
I had to stops myself from saying I don't get Norts, because we lived in Umbros when I was in college.

My boss just commented yesterday that at the Panthers game last weekend almost every 17-25 girl she saw was tighttight skinny jeans tucked in knee high boots. Neither one of us are a fan of this, but my.daughter sure is. She got a pair of grey kneehigh slouchy type boots and a pair of heeled almost cowboy style fashion boots for her birthday, and they'be already been on over every pair of jeans she has.
|
Round here it is the Nike shorts and Chaccos with a party T-shirt and a baseball cap, or now that it is getting cooler - the same outfit with a lettered sweatshirt on top. The guys are in khakis or khaki shorts with docksiders and a Polo long sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
The girls here are big into the "pajama" jeans too. Oddly, the girls from the "top" sorority look like they just got out of bed when they get to class and everyone else has their hair done and make-up? I agree it is not that much different from the Umbros and leggings in the 90s - but we would have had the pearls on with every outfit. :D |

I have a photo somewhere of my and my big with our black leggings, oversized sweatshirts from our winter formal, pearls, and - in a moment of self parody - we popped on huge bows for our hair. Alas, both being very curly haired, the bows are lost on us. On this day in 1995, you would have seen me on campus wearing: Jeans - medium dark wash, probably from the Gap A long sleeved t-shirt, also from the Gap or maybe Eddie Bauer. Probably hunter green or burgundy if not charcoal gray. Hiking boots A barn jacket (or a crew neck sweater, or a sewn letter sweatshirt). My gold "disc" - engraved with my crest - an initiation gift from my big. My Eddie Bauer back pack And I had probably applied a fresh coat of Clinique Black Honey lip gloss just before class. |

I have seen those shorts. I have more fabric in my handbag than those shorts have.

(Leaving church on Sunday, the car parked in front of us said: "You bet your dupa I'm Polish!" Yes, we are Catholics...how did you know? ;-)) |
I made a polyvore for this. Because apparently I have too much time on my hands.
Here it is. What you'll see on a Penn State sorority woman on any given day. American Apparel hoodies, leggings, Nike shoes and shorts, riding boots, loose fitting tops and sweaters, bodycon dresses and cage heels. Welcome to Happy Valley. |

Anyways, I came here because I am curious to know what the dudes are wearing as far as letters. I want to get my brother something with letters for Christmas, but I just don't know what. My fiance is not a good example...the only letters he ever wore were intramural shirts and this one pair of basketball shorts that he had. Of all the ways to wear letters, I usually saw guys wearing them on hoodies or hats. Is that still pretty much what they do? I suddenly feel so un-hip. :( ETA: I'm talking about the midwest, if that helps. I know it's a different story in the south. |

For guys, the lettered apparel I've seen doesn't usually go far beyond hoodies, t-shirts, hats, tack jackets, windbreakers, etc. I have seen a resurgence in crew neck sweatshirts, but that might be because of the area I've relocated to. I never saw crew necks in college (East Coast mid-atlantic/pretending to be southern lol). ETA: I'd be willing to bet that guys clothes vary a lot more with region/campus culture... |
^^I would definitely agree that this can be a campus/region thing. Also, I'm pretty sure you're spot on about the cardigan thing not working for dudes at my school! :D
I ended up getting him a hoodie. He is a hoodie kind of guy anyways! |

Sororities are beginning to pick up on the vertical letters. Or at least my chapter is, not sure about the others. Most of the sororities wear crew neck, v neck or sweatshirts with horizontal letters. |
