Interesting New Reality show called Sorority Girls

I was browsing sorority life online and I came across this link for this new show in the UK called Sorority Girls. Apparently it is airing in November over there on one of their biggest channels E4 which is were Skins airs and our big popular shows over here (in the US) air on there too.

I am really intrigued have you all seen anything here about it? I can only find some stuff right now?

I found some tweets about it on this twitter account as well!

I'm kind of really excited/intrigued/hope it portrays us in a positive light. It sounds different then the stereotypical movies out there that don't.

The girls compete to become members of an all new sorority in Leeds?

I doubt any of the NPC chapters are in on this.

Does any of the NPC groups have chapters in the UK? I am only aware of alumnae associations.

BetaGirl 10-18-2011 03:17 PM

I'm not sure, but it doesn't look like there is any official press stuff out yet on the show from e4- I found another link on it, but it looks like it's just the production companies stuff so far.

I have little doubt that you will be sorely disappointed.

It is a US institution which is now heading to Europe! Meet the Sorority Girls who want to bring their unique traditions of exclusivity and glamour across the Atlantic to the UK.

Follow the five Sorority ‘Sisters’ who are planning to establish the first chapter of a US sorority at a British university. They are quickly inundated with eager candidates desperate to enjoy the luxury and advantages of sorority life but getting into the select society is not easy. Can the potential members live up to the demands and dedication needed to conform to the strict rules, behave in the correct manner and always look their best no matter how humiliating the initiation process? What will the American girls make of the British students as cultures clash, and the bitching and tantrums start? Will the concept of sisterhood prevail or will the sorority be pulled apart?
From that alone I can tell it is going to bad all around

Yep. The show can EITHER be interesting/entertaining OR show sorority life in a good light. Probably not both.

Let's face it, watching a group of people do volunteer work, participate in study hours, and conduct a chapter business meeting just doesn't make for compelling TV. Even if one of those activities were shown, it would probably be from the POV of someone who doesn't want to be there and is therefore causing drama.

BetaGirl 10-18-2011 03:33 PM

It would be neat though if it is about those things. I could see it being interesting if they have girls who are into philanthropy and then contestants who aren't I guess. Using my sorority skills I found those five girl's twitters on that 12 yard twitter. The one's suppose to be the 5 American girls and they seem nice.

Shellfish 10-18-2011 03:36 PM

I would watch this for the hilarious awfulness. They just won't get it though they think they do.

Love this part from one press release found online: "where membership means living in luxury and gaining access to the hottest parties and people." I know I went to school ages ago, but the Greek houses on our campus were far from even the late-1970s/early-1980s version of luxury. Even now, it's still the same fairly small old houses, hopefully a bit updated.

KKGCaroline 10-18-2011 03:52 PM

/facepalm

I saw the advert for this yesterday.

I'm pretty sure its going to live upto every single stereotype that greek women face:

"oh mi god, i saw legally blonde/sorority row/greek/other random movie, and its inspired me to try to become a sorority girl!"

I agree with Alphafrog, study hours/volunteering does not make good tv, this is going to be bitching, drama, parties and boys!

I might, however, watch the first episode just so i can report back to you all!

/endfacepalm

BetaGirl 10-18-2011 03:53 PM

haha that sounds like a good plan- Were did you see an advert? I'm really curious to see a video or something on it?

KKGCaroline 10-18-2011 04:09 PM

I live in England, and have E4 as part of my cable tv package...

It was more of a teaser trailer, it was a quickflash of some girls in letters (too quick to see what the letters were), a very blonde girl saying "lets get some great girls", and a few excited girls cheering and thats honestly about it.

E4 is a bit like the CW, lots of youth programming, they air shows like Big Bang Theory, Smallville, Greek, One Tree Hill, Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother etc..

Alot of their home grown shows are a little weak, and unfortunately i'm not expecting this to be any different,

Mevara 10-18-2011 04:09 PM

Looks like it is a UK chapter of the Sigma Gamma sorority. I have never heard of them and can't find anything on the interwebz.

DrPhil 10-18-2011 04:12 PM

This is dumb.

It’s going to be an exciting adventure for one US sorority house director, Deb Chapman of Eugene, Oregon. Late last spring, SororityMom.com was contacted about this unique opportunity and I got the word out. A production company plans to film the creation of the first-ever American-style sorority in England. Besides selecting outstanding young sorority leaders, they need a wonderful House Mom to exemplify that role. Fifty of you readers responded to the casting call! The casting director, Josephine Brassey, commented on what a fantastic bunch you were. But they had to narrow it down to one!
Here’s a note from Deb that I thought you’d enjoy. She’ll be representing all of us as she introduces the concept of sorority house mother to British viewers.
“The interview process was great – I had a lot of fun getting to know Josephine and a few other members of the crew. The process took a bit longer than I thought it would – just about four months worth of pins and needles. I haven’t met the girls from the different sororities who will be going with me, but they look adorable! The show will be called “Sorority Girls” and the fictitious sorority will be Sigma Gamma (SG for Sorority Girls….:). We will be covering everything from moving in, polish week, recruitment process, and finally initiation. It will give the U.K. a pretty good idea of our American Greek System that they are so curious about. The filming will take place in Leeds (near the University) where they have actually remodeled a house to look like a real sorority – including a sleeping porch!

I’m thrilled – and a bit nervous about the adventure (the riots going on there have me a bit concerned), but non-the-less I’m flattered and hope not to embarrass myself too much over there. I’m happy to keep you updated on the experience – along with some photos to share with your readers. Wish me luck!!! “

Deb, we sorority — and fraternity — moms have your back! Best wishes from the hundreds of us working across the US to provide a home-away-from-home supporting young people in their college experience.

Every year since 1851 gorgeous, fashionable female American university students get together to invite a select few new members into their Sorority Chapter, a secret all-female club. For the first time ever British girls will have the opportunity to be a part of it, in E4's brand new reality show Sorority Girls.

Five all-American Sorority 'Sisters' are setting up the first ever Sorority Chapter in a British university city, Leeds. However, making it into a sorority is no easy matter. Potential new members must endure weeks of full-on challenges while remaining beautiful and perfectly turned out every single day.

Sorority Girls follows a truly original, formatted club as it transfers to the UK, and sheds light on all the weird rituals, unique traditions, tear-filled tantrums, in-fighting and attempts at sisterhood, making the ultra-exclusive and glamorous Sorority system accessible and attainable for British girls.

BetaGirl 10-18-2011 04:54 PM

I just read through some of the blog postings on here is sounds different to me, like the house mom writes:

"The girls are all adorable and incredibly dynamic! All five of them are from different colleges and sororities – and seem to get along really well with one another. Filming will start tomorrow with move in day for the five “founders”. I will try and write as often as I can to keep you and your readers caught up on everything that’s happening – unfortunately, I won’t be able to post any photo’s of the actual filming until after we have finished….part of the contract I was told…sorry."

She also writes:

"We are on day four of filming and we are all looking a bit deranged due to the long hours we’re putting in. Day 2 and day 3 went until the wee hours of the morning (3:30 – 4 a.m.) which is of course way past this old girl’s bedtime! We have finished choosing the new PNR’s and the 16 of them move into the house today…so many cute British girls tried out – it felt like actual recruitment combining both tears of sadness and tears of joy. "

BetaGirl 10-18-2011 04:57 PM

Oh found this link for a job posting when they must have been looking for the house mom:

http://www.sororitymom.com/wanna-be-...scameraaction/

"The role of the House Director on the programme is:
1. Veracity, British people have absolutely no sense of sororities, we are aiming to make the programme as true to life as possible.
2. To provide a different tone to the programme, 25 women between 18-22 on screen all the time could become tiring!
3. To mentor the girls, provide support and generally be someone for them to talk to. In each episode we’d like to have a segment in which the House Mother advises and councils the American Sorority Sisters as well as the British Pledges.
The House Mother will not participate in challenges or really any segments except formal dinners attending philanthropy events (but not participating) and her role as an advisor. So in summary we will not set up any situations which would be intended to embarrass our House Mother!"

BetaGirl -

What sorority were you in? Whichever one, I assume you were a member of the Beta chapter from your username. Or are you a Beta Sigma Phi? If so, at what school? :)

honeychile 10-31-2011 10:44 PM

I'm not sure that I want to see their "hidden talents"...

Xidelt 10-31-2011 11:40 PM

It's like the producers took the sorority life game from facebook and made it into a tv show. Gee, maybe I'll take gardens of time and turn it into a PBS archaeology special--so accurate and compelling! Sorority: yer doin it rong.

So it's a "made for TV" sorority? Yeah, this has sisterhood and longevity written all over it. But then we know no NPC sorority would do this. I've said before and I'll say again, real rush (including member selection) would be WAY too boring to ever put on TV and there's way too much opportunity for embarrassment to the organization. But I do think American style sorority life could work in England, if done correctly.

KKGCaroline 11-01-2011 02:18 PM

Unfortunately I don't think this program will encourage any GLO to come across the pond to even try Dubaisis, i can imagine this show will be another rubbish reality show, tasks and contests, and people get voted out, bitching, and drama.

I'm going to watch the first episode next week just to satisfy my curiosity, but i'm pretty sure i'll not be back to watch ep 2....

This. I want to know this.

Beta doesn't fit for the NPC groups at the university in Athens-Clarke County, GA (UGA) as far as I know.

Also, she's posted 9 times. One introduction and eight posts about this show, which sounds dumb.

Nope - the post above noted that it's Sigma Gamma - for Sorority Girls.

See? Dumb.

Psi U MC Vito 11-01-2011 06:26 PM

Also there is the possibility she is a nongreek but dating a Beta.

Mevara 11-01-2011 06:27 PM

I think she is somehow related to the show and trying to get the hype up so we will watch it.

I agree, but it's weird since we won't be able to watch it. Well, most of us won't. It's up to KKGCaroline and WhiteDaisy to watch and report back.

I wonder if there will be hulu on this or anything like that?

DubaiSis 11-02-2011 01:43 AM

I'm pathetic and JUST realized Sigma Gamma=Sorority Girl.
I'll have to look and see if it's on our listings here. The English language stations show mostly American TV but we do have 4 or 5 BBC stations.

Tulip86 11-02-2011 05:57 AM

It's on Channel 4, not on any of the BBC channels.

Any way I'm not really sure what else to say - I'm a new member to my sorority and I thought this was greek chat room and I always get excited about greek shows and found this site and there wans't much info on that show so I posted in case others did.

Sorry everyone. :(
