Food that looked like it would taste good, but when you tried it....Yuck!

Raw oysters. I tried them over the weekend, and I almost puked.

Vegetables. Yes, all of them.

lovespink88 10-16-2011 08:25 PM

Oatmeal. I love, love, love the smell of different oatmeals (my roommate used to make those Quaker instant ones with the different flavors). I've tried it a few times because it seems so good, but the consistency never sits well with me.

They look nasty, smell nasty and there is NO WAY in HECK I would put that in my mouth. You have my sympathies.

Tulip86 10-16-2011 08:32 PM

Ditto on the oysters.
And coffee (and hot chocolate for that matter). Love the smell, , love how it looks, despise the taste.

I get called to do taste tests/surveys at a local research place every once in a while. I got called for an oatmeal taste test, and it had been a while since I had last tried it, so I think the memory of my dislike for it had faded away. I needed the money so naturally I lied in the screener survey so that I would get selected. We had to eat half of each bowl and had 4 bowls. By the 4th bowl I was just omg, get me out of here!!!!!

Xidelt 10-16-2011 08:40 PM

Pineapple and mayonnaise sandwich. Yuck!! I had one at a reception one time. It's such a strange, gross combination. Maybe it's because I'm a Yankee that I don't like it.

SWTXBelle 10-16-2011 08:43 PM

More oysters for me!

I LOVE oysters - youngest son (8) tried them and was NOT a fan. But I was impressed - I didn't learn to love oysters until I was in my 30s, and never tried them till then, because they are the OPPOSITE of the op's title - they look as though they would not taste good, and yet they DO.

Vegemite from Australia. Almost any food from India.

pomplemousse12 10-16-2011 09:11 PM

Sushi. Looks beautiful, but I cannot do it at all.
Nasty stuff.
I also feel the same about Jen's dislike of coffee. It smells AMAZING but is too bitter for me.

christiangirl 10-16-2011 09:27 PM

Turkish Delight. I'd always been dying to try it because Peter in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe raved about it but maaaaaan that stuff was not the business.

LOL Did anyone else make the mistake of thinking vanilla extract would taste the way it smelled when they were little? :p

haha, yes! my dad used to let me bake with him from time to time, and man i was really put off vanilla for a while. to this day i cant deal with strong (think yankee) vanilla scented candles because of that. :o

aephi alum 10-16-2011 09:40 PM

Oh, raw oysters are the best! :)

I actually can't think of any food that looks good to me but tastes awful. Food either looks and tastes good, looks and tastes bad, or looks bad but tastes good. I am willing to try something that doesn't look like it would taste good ... I've discovered some nummy treats that way (e.g. eel sushi) and I've also found some real losers.

A Turkish TA brought this in for us to try once.

If the White Witch offered it to me, I'd be like "Nah. I'm good."

SWTXBelle 10-16-2011 10:06 PM

Traditional Turkish Delight - for example, the rosewater flavour - looks great, tastes like my grandmother's Rose Milk smelled. But the Americanized version - Applets and Cotlets - SO YUMMY. http://www.libertyorchards.com/categ...FQ1U7Aod9HlUKw

THIS was the flavor I got.

My very faulty logic: I picked it because it was pink. I love the pink Starbursts. Figured it would be similar. False.

Y'all are just misguided...lol. Sushi, oatmeal, veggies, and coffee are some of my favorite things..

Seconded. I do not, however like Skittles or most fruit flavored things. They look pretty but do not taste anything like fruit. This makes me sad, because I love fruit.

I like bananas and grapes but dislike almost anything banana- or grape-flavored. It's so far from tasting like actual banana or grape that it's not worth it for me. :(

txAOII_15 10-16-2011 11:31 PM

speaking of bananas, banana bread. smells heavenly, and the taste is blehhhh

You CANNOT live in the PacNW! I'm revoking your card.

Skittles and Smarties taste like medicine to me.

I saw my parents drinking tea and Diet Coke when I was little and thought it'd be awesome. NOPE!

Unsweetened chocolate. I was thinking "I like dark chocolate; let's try this." I had to wash my mouth out because it was that gross.

Skittles and Smarties…yum. I love tea—Diet drinks in general not so much (though if that's the easiest thing to get to drink, I can deal).

Dark chocolate is…certainly not the same as milk chocolate (or my favorite that some don't even count as real chocolate, aka white chocolate), but it also isn't the worst thing in the world.

As for things I genuinely can't stand to eat: traditional meat-and-beans chili (white bean/chicken chili is an exception), potato salad, olives of any kind, and licorice.

Funny thing is I never eat anything raw, because of the risks of parasites. That was so unlike me. It's just that the person I was with was eating them with crackers and some kind of salsa sauce stuff that the restaurant provided to go with the oysters. I don't know why, but they just looked so good going down, so I decided to try one. That was disaster. If we weren't at a public restaurant, I know I would have puked. It was so slimy, and gross. Blech! :(

Never again.

I think the thread has morphed into "foods you really find disgusting".

No, I thought it would taste like Nutella.

LOL, boy was that a disgusting mistake. We had an Aussie girl bring some in to Social Studies in 8th grade. Bleeeeeeeeeeeech.

And FWIW, Nutella isn't all that appealing looking either, but it gets a pass on that for amazing creamy deliciousness.

Tulip86 10-17-2011 07:59 AM

I think olives look great but they smell and taste disgusting.

No, they don't.
That is all.

Practically the only fish I don't like is mackerel...and it looks so great! It's shiny, silvery, just the prettiest fish. But then you eat it, and it tastes like swordfish that's been left outside in the rain for a week.

I'm pretty sure being a Yankee has nothing to do with it. That's just nasty.

I think a fresh tomato is a beautiful thing, until I take a bite. Oh, the slime! On the other hand, I will eat anything made from a tomato (ketchup, spaghetti sauce, salsa, etc.)

YES.

I absolutely hate tomatoes on burgers, salads, etc, but I love tomato-based foods (salsa, spaghetti sauce, etc). I used to refuse to eat ANY tomato products, but I've started eating them when they're cooked into pastas or other meals.

Me too. I really dislike when restaurants forget my special order (sans tomato) apologizing as they take away the tomato-laden burger, only to bring it back minutes later w/out the tomato and thinking that somehow I'm not going to notice that big thin line of tomato slime left on my burger.

..but I'm over it. really I am. :)

I'm the same way, but I usually just take the tomato slime. I figure it beats the heck out of server saliva.
