Earthquake?

Anyone else feel the earthquake? So bizarre. Apparently I've missed all of the other VA quakes in the past. Definitely felt this one!

AZ-AlphaXi 08-23-2011 02:08 PM

Yep .. centered in Virginia

ASTalumna06 08-23-2011 02:10 PM

I felt it here in Jersey! I'm seeing that my friends on Facebook from DC, to northwest PA, to Boston felt it, too.

MysticCat 08-23-2011 02:10 PM

We felt it.

TPA85 08-23-2011 02:12 PM

I didn't feel it but apparently everyone else in my area (in northeast Ohio) did.

goldendelta 08-23-2011 02:15 PM

I felt it here on Long Island. I work in a warehouse so we thought it was a truck backing in then we heard it was felt all the way to Virginia. It wasn't that bad here, no damage.

knight_shadow 08-23-2011 02:16 PM

My east coast friends on FB have filled my wall with news about this earthquake. I hope no one is seriously injured.

Ch2tf 08-23-2011 02:18 PM

I felt it in Boston.

rhoyaltempest 08-23-2011 02:24 PM

I more than felt it - right outside of Philly. My walls were shaking...I didn't know what was going on, it was scary!

I'm reading online that there are no reports of any injuries yet.

I must say, that was a very weird experience. I started feeling light-headed.. I have a hanger on my cubicle, and it started swinging back and forth. I thought I was going crazy. Then I saw my water shifting in the bottle on my desk.. When the floor was clearly shaking, people were out of their chairs and evacuating.

Xylochick216 08-23-2011 02:29 PM

Things were shaking pretty badly in VA. A few things rolled off my desk, but everything seems to be fine.

pomplemousse12 08-23-2011 02:39 PM

I was in the campus library when it happened, and we moved and shook a bit, but nothing fell off of our table. People here are freaking out, which is unnecessary since it wasn't that bad (in my opinion).

Same here. At first I thought I was just getting dizzy (I've had boughts of vertigo in the past). Then I noticed I was rocking in my chair, my cube walls were moving, and the lights were shaking. I still feel kinda nauseous/like an episode of vertigo just passed.

NinjaPoodle 08-23-2011 02:49 PM

I understand DC and Manhattan felt the fury too. Hope you all are ok.

I didn't feel anything in NE Ohio.

ree-Xi 08-23-2011 02:59 PM

I had just gotten out of the pool and was walking back to my house and I thought that I was having a dizzy spell. Glad to know it wasn't just me!

Benzgirl 08-23-2011 03:24 PM

While I didn't feel it, I just got an email from our home office in McLean that all the buildings were evacuated (I was wondering why nobody was answering emails). Now it's back to business as usual.

AnotherKD 08-23-2011 03:29 PM

Here in the DC area, my building shook a lot. Thing is, my coworkers and I thought I wad a bomb. Seemed a lot more believable than an earthquake. Which is pretty sad, I guess.

In NE Ohio, didn't feel anything.

The DC fire department is reporting damage to the National Cathedral.

It's not too different from when West Coasters flip out over a few snowflakes. :)

Not only is it unexpected, our buildings are, as a whole older than those on the West Coast; furthermore, our office buildings are not seismically retrofitted or constructed in manner to resist such forces. I work in an engineering/architecture firm, and some of our structural guys were like, we hope a quake never really hits NYC, because we'll have a lot of problems. I'm laughing at our people freaking out, but I'm trying not to be too smug.

Is that photo supposed to be documentation of damage? I can put a chair down on my back porch, take a picture of it, and claim the same! :)

Yes, I recognize all of this. Good points. Out here our buildings are built for earthquakes (the Space Needle was even engineered to sway to a 45 degree angle in an earthquake), which is why we sustained very little damage in Seattle when we had our 7.0-ish quake in 2001. We also have earthquake drills in school...maybe they should do that on the east coast and along the Missouri fault if they don't already. If they did, everyone would know that running outside while the ground is shaking is the LAST thing you should do.

DEVODUDE 08-23-2011 04:30 PM

I felt that here in North Jersey.

I never had earthquake drills, and I've lived on the East Coast my entire life. It happened during our lunch hour, so a lot of us who would have known better than to go outside were already out already...:(

33girl 08-23-2011 04:38 PM

Apparently they evacuated downtown Pittsburgh. I was southeast of the city and felt absolutely nothing.

Kappamd 08-23-2011 04:42 PM

I felt nothing in NeOH. Fiance felt it in State College, PA.

Edit: There are a ton of us from NE Ohio on here. Didn't even realize.

GammaPhi88 08-23-2011 04:52 PM

I was in class at my law school at the time, and felt some shaking...at first we thought it was a bunch of people on the floor below us, but then someone yelled "Its an earthquake, get under your desks!" So we got under our desks, and the professor just continued with legal analysis once we got up. Then, of course, they evacuated the building; following that they kept us captive in a classroom...without our books. So you take some nervous law students, put them in a room without their books and keep them there...there's a joke in there somewhere.

ADqtPiMel 08-23-2011 05:26 PM

I'm really close to the Capitol building, so I thought there was some kind of attack. After a few minutes it was apparent it was an earthquake and we evacuated. Cell service was down for about an hour after. Traffic in DC is HORRENDOUS right now. I walked the 3-4 miles home from work.

AOEforme 08-23-2011 05:29 PM

The earthquake was in the middle of one of my exams and we had to keep taking it. Everyone looked up and the swaying building and just went back to work.

AznSAE 08-23-2011 05:32 PM

didn't colorado have an earthquake too yesterday? soon the hurrican will hit. that old pastor might be right about the end of the world ;)

AGDee 08-23-2011 05:33 PM

It was felt in Detroit, but I didn't feel it. By my best estimate, I was in an elevator at the time so the minimal movement wasn't felt by me.

A sorority sister in DC had some pictures fall off of her wall and shatter but that is the extent of her damage. She was shaken up though (pun intended).

It would be good timing for me.. as long as it happens before I write the 10 page paper that is due in 10 days.

barbino 08-23-2011 05:42 PM

One of the radio stations that I listen to suggested that we might have been able to feel the quake in Chicago but I haven't talked to anyone who has. It's interesting hearing reports from people who did feel it, though.:)
