A Fashionable Recruitment 2011
Hello [= you all have drawn me in with amazing recruitment stories of all your loved ones. Honestly, I have gone through all the ups and downs with all the Georgia and Auburn PNMs this week! So I decided to share my daughter's upcoming recruitment.
My daughter aka Zoe (for Rachel Zoe ha!) will be attending the wonderful University of Southern California. We are so excited for her as she comes from a large family of fellow Trojans. Fight On! USC has ten sororities and nine will be participating in formal recruitment. The sororities are as follows: Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Phi Delta Delta Delta Delta Gamma Gamma Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Kappa Gamma Pi Beta Phi Sigma Delta Tau For my purposes they will now be known as: Chanel Gucci Vuitton Versace Dior Chloe Prada Escada YSL Burberry Out of the above only YSL will not be participating in formal recruitment. Zoe comes from a long line of Greeks. I was in a sorority (which I will not name for Zoe's privacy sake) and she has several affiliations both in sororities and fraternities. Zoe is a legacy at two of the houses, but after much observation over the years, I have warned Zoe that not much grace is given to legacy PNMs and to understand that it really won't be much of a factor one way or the other at USC. Zoe has managed to gather recs for most of the sororities and after many afternoons of shopping and lunch with her mom, (which I loved since she will be leaving for school soon) she is outfit ready! Zoe is excited and I am so excited for her and nervous for her! So now all we have to do is wait... |
how exciting! looking forward to reading all about it.

Fight On!!!!!!
|
LOVE Rachel Zoe! She is coming out with her own clothing line this month. I will never have money again.
Good luck! |
Yay, California recruitment story! Good luck to your daughter!
|
Thank you all. [= My daughter has been so excited going off to college for her first year! I have to thank GC for all the great advice I have been reading.
btw I must apologize for my ridiculous user name. =P I had intended to be a lurker and just put in a random choice, but once I decided to post I had no idea how to change it. Live and learn! [= |

I personally think it is great. I immediately thought of "The YaYa Sisterhood" and those hilarious new Greek Yogurt commercials ("YaYa says you are dressed like a prostitute!"). I hope your daughter has a wonderful time at SC. Just ask her not to become an obnoxious SC fan...LOL...(Cal alum here);) |

And USC fans are NOT obnoxious. WE are spirited. Cal fans......hmmmmm:) Perhaps we could agree that not ALL USC fans are obnoxious...but some are "overly spirited"? And could the SC Trojan Band POSSIBLY play that fight song a little more? LOL Seriously, it would be great to see CAL fans exhibit the enthusiasm the SC fans show, though we do have our own unique style. :p It will be interesting to see how the addition of Utah and Colorado will change the PAC-10/12 dyamics. |
Fight on!! Best of luck to Zoe as she goes through recruitment!
The Trojan Family is awesome...and so are Trojan families. :D |
Fight on!
My younger son graduated in 2007 and had a wonderful experience at USC. It was a big "gulp" for Mom & Dad, since he was 2000 miles away from home, but his dream from the time he entered high school was to attend USC. And we found the Trojan Family to be so incredibly warm and welcoming. My son was wary of the Greek scene, (he's always prefered marching to his own beat) but I encouraged him to at least go through rush to experience the process, and now we tease him about what a gun-ho frat guy he morphed into. He's living in NYC now, but still very close to lots of his brothers, and will have a life long connection with them. Best of luck to Zoe! |
Best of luck Zoe!
Keep an open mind and have fun! Looking forward to reading your story! |
USC recruitment
I just heard that a lovely PNM that I recommended at USC was released from recruitment after the convo round!! To make matters worse,, she was re-rushing as a sophomore, which is really not an advantage at USC! She was offered a bid after last year's recruitment but made the decision not to accept it and re-rush as a sophomore. I knew that was a mistake. Especially at a school like USC which has a brutally competitive recruitment! This gal really wanted to be in a sorority, had the opportunity last year and didn't take it!
As it is said so often on GC, PNM's, if you really truly want to be in a sorority and you are offered a bid...TAKE IT!!!! Try it!! If the chapter is struggling a little, be a great member and try to turn things around! ALL of the sororities that we talk about on GC are awesome organizations. True, some chapters are bigger, stronger (whatever) on some campuses than they are on others. But, they all share the beautiful bonds of sisterhood, ritual and traditions!!! Be brave and take the leap of faith!! Accept the bid that you are offered and I doubt that you will regret it. |

And yes, even at these super competitive schools there will be COB, but please realize we're talking about a handful of girls who will get placed this way, not the 100+ who don't get placed for whatever reason. |
I believe the Christian sorority (ADChi ?) as well as SDT will hold informal recruitment in a couple of weeks. I am not sure if any of the houses did COB last year... But of course this year is a new ballgame
|
^^^Sidenote: it's SDT (Sigma Delta Tau.) Not STD. *shudder*

Long Greek History at USC
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...eakfast4-1.jpgSigma Delta Tau and Alpha Chi Omega did rush informally last spring.
Greek life has a long history at SC. Alpha Chi Omega was installed well over 100 years ago. Many sorority traditions have been followed for decades such as Presents. The Pansy Breakfast originated there in 1927 and was featured in Life magazine. In days gone by Greek women announced their engagements by stepping through the pansy ring. There were full page features in the Los Angeles Times with photos of women and their sorority affiliation. Guests at the breakfasts were fashionably dressed in the latest ensembles of the time with hats, gloves, suits or dresses. In the above photo Adrienne Atwood steps through the Pansy Ring in a wedding gown to conclude the Pansy Breakfast in 1957. |

OMG a terrible transposition of letters on my part...my apologies!
|
A Few Details....
It was for all Greek women. The Tri Delta chapter members acted as hostesses. Greek engaged women were guests. In past years there were more NPC chapters on the row, but total was much smaller than today It was an outdoor full breakfast served in the front garden of the chapter house.
The pansies came from area gardens, particularly from the huge pansy beds at Exposition Park adjacent to the SC campus. Los Angeles park officials gave permission to pick the pansies and supervised the process. In the LA Times each woman's photo and her affiliation was printed on one or two full pages. It was part of Los Angeles social history. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ .....apologies to yayaya for interrupting your daughter's recruitment story. |
No apology necessary. I love any discussion about USC. :) So as you all can probably guess. Recruitment has come and gone and I now feel free to add my daughters story.
With apologies to dgdramadawg, I will be stealing her formula since so many of you are familiar with it and I think it is a good way to preserve anonymity. USC recruitment begins with Conversation Days. There are three conversation days and each PNM visits three houses each day. Zoe's schedule was as follows... btw just as dgdramadawg...the codes are love, really like, like, lukewarm, and didn't like. Day One: Dior: Really like Chanel: Loved Vuitton: Lukewarm Day Two: Chloe: Like Versace: Really like Burberry: Loved Day Three: Gucci: Lukewarm Prada: Really like Escada: Really like At the end of these rounds, the PNMs will go from 9 to a maximum of 6 for House Tours. So Zoe went and placed her rankings as follows...in no particular order Chanel Vuitton Versace Prada Escada Burberry 1. Dior 2. Chloe 3. Gucci At this point, Zoe was so excited and had a great time visiting all the houses. Favorites: Chanel and Burberry More to come... :D |
Wait, if she was lukewarm about Vuitton, why did she put it in her top six instead of Dior?
|
and also above chole?
|
Bid Day at University of Southern California was last Sunday! Would love to know how Zoe's recruitment went! Yayaya...please tell us what happened!
|
Im so sorry this has taken me so long to get back to...crazy week!
I'm also happy to explain why Zoe kept Vuitton. Vuitton happens to be the chapter of a much loved relative and Zoe felt like she really needed to give it the best shot she possibly could. After all she loves this relative and it was the chapter she chose. With that in mind, she kept Vuitton for another round. [= So a very excited and anxious Zoe went to pick up her schedule for House Tours. She was very happy to see a full set of six. Yay! Chanel Vuitton Versace Prada Escada Burberry House Tours Chanel: Loved Vuitton: Lukewarm Versace: Liked Prada: Really Liked Escada: Really Liked Burberry: Loved Zoe had an amazing time at House Tours. She thought all the houses were gorgeous and had so many great conversations. At the end of House Tours, the PNMs had to rank again. Zoe's least favorite part. =\ The next day would be Skit/Philanthropy?? I have no idea what it was called, but it was the next event. [= The PNMs could return to a maximum of four houses. So Zoe ranked as follows in no particular order: Burberry Prada Escada Chanel 1. Versace 2. Vuitton Zoe called me right after with major ranking guilt. She had put my chapter and her other relative's chapter at the bottom. I reassured her that we all felt very very strongly that she needed to go with the houses where she felt the most comfortable. All the outside influences can be so hard on these PNMs. :( Now we anxiously waited for the morning! |

Thank you 33girl. :)
Once again it was time for Zoe to pick up her schedule. Today was Skits/Philanthropy and she was allowed a maximum of four parties. She opened her schedule and found she was invited back to Escada Chanel Burberry Prada She couldn't have been more excited and headed off to her parties. On this day, most of the houses showed a slideshow or video of their chapter and Zoe said she really got a feel for the sisterhood in the houses. Escada: Really Liked Chanel: Loved Burberry: Loved Prada: Really Liked At the end of the day...once again...ranking time. At this point, Zoe felt like she couldn't go wrong with any of the houses, but she definitely had some that had stood out for her from the beginning. So the selection now would be for Preference which at USC is held in the morning. The PNMs can go to two houses for preference and Zoe filled in her rankings in this order: Chanel Burberry 1. Escada 2. Prada Fingers crossed she turned it in and waited for Prefence morning results! :D |
How did things turn out?
|
ahhh i love it! i'm dying to know where she ended up!
|
hahaha i think i know where she ended up. i'm willing to bet there was only 1 zoe in recruitment and all i'm gunna say is i rushed her :p
|
maybe so, but often, people don't use real names in their recruitment threads. still, it would be neat if you had met her!

Yea, I doubt her daughter's name is "Zoe". Time for the finale, Yayaya. :) |
any results yet?
|
PNMs don't come back here to post for a number of reasons.
*They got a bid and are too busy with school and sorority to post. *They didn't get a bid and don't want to come back and post about it. *They got a bid to their 2nd choice and weren't thrilled about it, hence no post. *They dropped out of recruitment or declined a bid and just forgot about this thread. Whatever the case may be, if PNMs wish to come back and update us, they will. These "tell us what happened!" or "ommmmmgggg I wanna know now!!!" posts are really silly, guys. |
Well, since Yayaya herself said in the middle of the thead, So as you all can probably guess. Recruitment has come and gone and I now feel free to add my daughters story. I think it's fair to ask how it turned out.
|
Aww I want to know what happened to zoe!
|
At first, I thought I knew who she was because her descriptions of the houses matched up really nicely with a friend's feelings. That's when I realized that I had the order we visited the houses all mixed up in my head and this couldn't be that girl. But my friend is very happy at her house and I hope Zoe is, too.
|
Hello all! First, I must apologize for taking so long to finish this story... hopefully, better late than never!
So here goes... The next morning Zoe anxiously awaited her preference invites and opened it to reveal Chanel and Burberry!! She couldn't have been more thrilled so off she went to her parties. Coming out of preference, Zoe loved both houses, but she had been made to feel particularly special at one house and so on her bid card she wrote... Chanel Later that day, the USC PNM's gather to open their bid cards and Zoe said she was shaking as she opened hers and it said...Chanel! AKA DELTA GAMMA!!! The USC PNMs open their bid cards and then they all run together to the row towards their houses. It is quite a sight to see and I have seen a video of my beautiful new DG running with all her new sisters towards the DG house. It makes me tear up every time to see how thrilled she was that day! So thats our story and Zoe has been the happiest Delta Gamma ever since and made lovely friends in DG as well as many of the other houses! THE END!!...finally |
