2011 recruitment bits and pieces

This thread is for little tidbits we want to share but that probably aren't worthy of a whole new thread all their own.

University of Louisville had first rounds last night, and right as the PNMs were before the 6th (of 8) parties, the sky opened up and it started pouring with intense wind gusts. The RCs started banging on the sororities' doors to let the women in early, which we scrambled to make happen. As they were walking in, the recruitment tent starts blowing away, a fairly substantial tree breaks, and the power goes out. I obviously can't speak for the other groups, but our women and PNMs were champs and kept singing and talking! when the parties ended (all conducted without any power) the PNMs all stayed in the houses, celebrate from the actives. They decided to push on with the 7 and 8 parties, without power. I heard that on top of all that, an alarm went off at one chapter, causing them to recruit over that noise!!!

I haven't checked in yet to see the status of power or recruitment for today- schedules to begin at 3. I still don't have power back at my house...yay recruitment!!!

scrapinfificat 08-14-2011 12:55 PM

Hopefully the power will return before second round begins today.
UK begins recruitment today. I would love to hear news from both U of L & UK concerning recruitment.
Good luck today and the rest of the week. Please keep posting.

Oy, that sounds like chaos! I hope everything goes a lot smoother for the rest of recruitment!

Recruitment at Iowa State started today. My husband and I were on campus with our kids just wandering around and we saw all the different Rho Gamma groups around Greekland. The girls all looked so cute (and young!). They were given t-shirts from Panhellenic to wear today, and many had on denim or khaki shorts. Some were awfully short for my taste, though I know that's the style. Apparently, more than 500 were registered, so quota could be over 30 again this year.

Genius.

Since this is the logo on TCU Panhellenic's facebook page, I assume that it may also be the t-shirts that the PNMs are getting this year. I love how it has everyone's flower growing in the garden together. So cute! Want!

There are about 935 PNM's this year (down slightly from last year) and the schedule has been shortened by a day. The PNM's visited all 12 houses today (including the way cool giant air conditioned tent Alpha Phi put up on their building site). There is also great buzz in the air for the Phi Mu colonization; the girls in other houses are being really supportive of them.

Thanks for the update! The weather has been crazy! Glad the temp is down hope the humidity is also. Good for Alpha Phi - the tent is a fabulous idea. I hope that Phi Mu has a great recruitment. I looked for a facebook page for UK Panhellenic but could not find one. I would love to hear more if you have the time to post.

I wasn't able to go help today, but the update is that two of the six chapters did round two parties today without electricity. Our chapter was able to secure a couple generators to get some lighting/fans blowing, but it was of course still pretty warm. Luckily, as Pinot said, the temp did drop to thelow 80s today, for a little relief. Campus just sent a text out that power has been restored to the campus- all but Greek Row (of course!). HOPEFULLY it will be restored by tomorrow- it's skit night (and hours tours, I'm pretty sure); talk about hot!!!!

As a random aside to add to the story of the storm- Jefferson County Public Schools (16th largest school district in the country) was supposed to have the first day of school tomorrow, but because so many schools still don't have power, the first day of school had to be pushed to Tuesday!

Here's the site for Phi Mu at UK: http://uky.phimu.org/

My girls are exhausted tonight, have submitted their lists and looking forward to a full day tomorrow. The PNM's can visit a max of 9 for philanthropy.

Oklahoma State

Recruitment is completed at Oklahoma State. Does anyone have numbers from that university?

I'm currently going through recruitment at UK. I might make a thread about it, depending on the outcome. It stormed horribly last night but it was cool and breezy today, we're very lucky. We went through all 13 houses in one day, apparently this is different from past years.

Good luck to you and I hope that you will land in the perfect place for you! Keep a open heart, listen carefully. Yes, it is different open house was 2 days. Allowed your mind to process. Keep us posted if you have to time or inclination.

I saw that the schools were closed today - that was some storm! The ladies at U of L are going to have some great stories to tell about recruitment 2011! Surely by tomorrow the power will be restored.

Bid Day is today at Mississippi State, 640 girls started recruitment on Thursday! We have 7 NPC chapters here.

If I am not mistaken, if all PNMs make it to preference then that would make quota (pledge classes) around 77.9167 (935 PNMs divided by 12 Chapters) - give or take.

Go Cats!

I read on Twitter (I know! Proceed with caution) that quota was 83 and ZTA took quota plus 15.

Hail State!

bamamama14 08-15-2011 05:53 PM

Please someone post a UK recruitment story. And yes 13 houses in one day is new. And exhausting.
But better than when I went through in the dark ages of the late 70's... 2 1/2 days of open house for 13 chapters. Those open house parties must have lasted forever by comparison.
Plus the invitations were done with the old IBM punch cards on the computer. If a house was late getting their invitations to the computing center they were fined by the minute.
Fun times!

carnation 08-15-2011 06:07 PM

On my retro recruitment thread, I discussed those punch cards in detail, haha.

Last year quota was around 65. A fair number of girls drop after day 1 (yesterday). Often, girls sign up for UK rush to get in the dorms a week early, go to the open houses and drop. If a girl keeps an open mind (are you listening wildcass?) the process will find her a great home.

I would also love to hear a PNM perspective on UK rush.

There have been so many girls who have dropped solely because they wanted to move into the dorms early. I just don't think it's worth the two hundred dollars (move in fees/recruitment fees), but that's just me. Don't worry, I know absolutely nothing about the reputations of the sororities here. I am a blank slate. I'm going to try to find time to write everything up for a thread just because I've never seen a UK one on here? Unless I haven't been searching well enough.

http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...ad.php?t=79703 - This is CuriousWildcat's rush story from a few years back.

I know there have been a few UK rush stories over the years but sometimes the OP doesn't name her school for privacy purposes. Of course seasoned rush vets figure it out right away...but maybe that's why your search results are coming up empty.

Best of luck to you.

That's probably true. I figured it was pointless to keep it private since you all seem to be great detectives! Thanks for the link, I'm writing mine now. Not sure when it's "safe" to publish...

ProudandTrue 08-15-2011 11:20 PM

You could post each entry a couple of days after the actual party. Please do! I feel like this year there are several "jumbo" recruitment threads with multiple stories going on within them, but very few personal stories from PNMs themselves. Good luck to you!

You could also type it out in doc form, and post it after Recruitment.

The power came back on in time for Skit Night at UofL, thank goodness! Tonight is Preference; I'm not sure total number of women still in recruitment, but will try to get some rough numbers. I know roughly 260 started Open House night, and there have been 10ish withdrawals each day, and I'm not sure how many women (if any) have been completely released.

I'm so glad the power is back on! Even with cooler temps, air conditioning was always most welcome during my years there as an active and later as an adviser. Good luck to all of the PNMs today!

atrianglepi 08-16-2011 03:27 PM

Recruitment starts today at South Carolina. They are trying a new schedule this year. My daughter is on the other side for the first time. Good luck to the PNM's!

OneHeartOneWay 08-16-2011 11:10 PM

I think the number of PNMs going into Preference this evening at UofL was 207. Bids are distributed tomorrow at 4:00, and Zeta begins their recolonization in two weeks, I believe. I got to see all the groups skits last night, and I was reminded of how wonderful all the groups on campus are- we can't wait to add Zeta to the mix! Looking forward to posting good news for everyone tomorrow night...

A girl we know well is preffing at the 2 Macon Magnolia groups at a mid-sized university today! Good luck to her!

dukemama 08-18-2011 08:42 AM

Three terrific girls from our neighborhood are starting college this fall, but two of them are going to schools with no Greek life. I forget where the 3rd one is attending, but she's a Chi O legacy through her older sister so we'll see...
