University of Missouri Recruitment 2011
1600+ girls move in Sunday, August 14th, and recruitment begins Monday, August 15th. Are there any Mizzou parents or PMs out there who would like to share their recruitment stories as they unfold? My daughter is going through as a sophomore - a bit more challenging but not impossible. I will try to share her updates as I get them.
Here are the 14 chapters at Mizzou: Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Phi Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Delta Gamma Gamma Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Delta Kappa Kappa Gamma Phi Mu Pi Beta Phi Sigma Sigma Sigma Zeta Tau Alpha I thought I would use code names for the chapters based on sterling silver patterns (inspired by A Southern Belle Primer :)). These are, of course, in a different order than the list above. Rose Point Chantilly Strasbourg Candlelight Repousse Eloquence Old Master Burgundy Buttercup Chrysanthemum Grande Baroque Fairfax Acorn Francis I I can tell you that my daughter is a legacy to two chapters - Grande Baroque and Repousse. However, one of those chapters has reported that its legacy enrollment is double this year's chapter quota . My daughter is well aware that being a legacy does not guarantee anything and that cuts will be heavy. The other thing I'll share is that last year, as a freshman, she made some very good friends in Rose Point, and they are really pulling for her. That's all for now - I'd love for any and all to join in the discussion! |
How exciting! Best of luck to your daughter. My daughter starts rush in two weeks. I'll be following your daughters story.
|
I'm curious to know if you are a Grand Baroque or a Repousse or is it someone else in your family? If your are a member is that making it more difficult for you? Are you secretly hoping she'll pledge your chapter?
|
Yes - my daughter is a legacy to one of the chapters through me, and the other through my mother. I would be delighted if she chose my chapter, but equally as happy if she found a home in any of the other 13 chapters - they are all outstanding, and if she is happy, I am happy!
Information from the greek life director at today's parent meeting:
All PMs have a meeting tonight at 7:00, and open house parties start tomorrow. The schedule is as follows:
|
Well, Candlelight is my pattern (inherited from my maternal grandmother), and Strasbourg is my mother's pattern, so those are my two picks for now.
|
My pattern (which I've given to Gypsyboots) is Grande Baroque - so that's who I am hoping is Gamma Phi!
|
i love your code name choices!!! i am really looking forward to reading this-what fun. best wishes to your daughter!!.
|
My pattern is Old Master. I also have my late MIL's silver since ex did not want to take it when he left. That is Grand Baroque.
DaffyKD |
I'll root for Fairfax. (12 place settings of which I inherited from my grandmother. They were married in 1909, but FF wasn't issued until 1910...I think she purchased it later.)
And I'll enjoy this thread, remembering my Mizzou rush experience oh-so-long ago. |
First day of open house is today! The weather looks to be cooperative all week - highs in the upper 80s. As we have all been reminded this summer, it could be much worse! All of the PMs met last night at Jesse Auditorium and the Panhellenic Counselors (pi chis) provided some entertainment. My daughter reported that she enjoyed meeting all the girls in her group, and that there are several other sophomores. She also said that four girls who were registered for her group hadn't reported in as of last night. I wonder if this is common? Maybe some register to hold a spot and then decide against participating. Anyway, a busy day ahead with seven parties, the last of which is Grande Baroque, one of her legacy chapters. She promises to call tonight with details!
|
I'm rooting for Acorn! It's my silver pattern that I inherited from my grandmother...I've got a complete set of service for 12 of it!
|
Well, let's see...
I'm a good northerner, so I had to get out my "Southern Belle Primer" to go over the patterns again to see what I think I'd like.;) They don't show Candlelight or Fairfax, so I don't know about those. I know I'd have to have a Reed & Barton... so that means Francis I or Burgundy. Based on the descriptions, I think I'll go for Francis I. However, I was also drawn to Acorn's description: "Acorn: Georg Jensen. Beware of the Acorn girl. This pattern is lovely but foreign (it comes from Denmark). Girls who pick Acorn are rebellious. They march in parades and sometimes have been known to go to colleges in the East and drink beer straight from the can." Schwartz, Maryln A Southern Belle Primer, Or Why Princess Margaret Will Never Be A Kappa Kappa Gamma (c) 1991 Too funny- "march in parades," "drink beer straight from the can!" The horror! AND FOREIGN! So, go Francis I & Acorn! |
Gotta hope that Grand Baroque is ADPi - or Eloquence. I was completely torn, and my mother's was discontinued.
|
Great idea to use sterling patterns for chapters! My younger sister (not Greek) got my mother's set of Grande Baroque because she got married first. Sigh - I wanted it.:)

finished with day one of open house
I just spoke with my daughter, and she said she is having a great time! She is worn out after visiting eight chapters today. Fortunately, she has just six events tomorrow, so there is more break time built in. The sororities host 20 open house events over two days, and the PMs attend 14 events spread out over those two days. Here are her first impressions - some of the information is from our phone conversation, and some is from text messages she sent me throughout the day. :)
Acorn - connected with the girl who walked her in as they are both runners, also met a couple of other girls Buttercup - talked about choir with one girl but otherwise she said the conversations with other girls were kind of generic Candlelight - she sent me a text right after this party saying she "love love loved" Candlelight (then texted me three minutes later and said "did I mention I LOVE Candlelight?") - had a conversation with a girl she played soccer against in high school, said she felt like she really bonded with each girl she talked with Old Master - she spilled water all over her leg at this chapter and said it was embarrassing, talked with three different girls Burgundy - talked with the same girl the whole time, said they kind of ran out of stuff to talk about and she was kind of the one keeping the conversation going Fairfax - described them as super nice and easy to talk to, spoke with five different girls and said that the president and vice president made a point of meeting her Francis I - very friendly, saw a girl she knew but didn't get to talk with her, did get to meet several other girls Grande Baroque - talked with the same girl the whole time, and said they bonded instantly (over a television show they are both "obsessed" with) The chapters she felt the strongest connection with were: Candlelight Fairfax Grande Baroque Acorn Tomorrow, she gets to visit her other legacy chapter, Repousse, and see her friends in Rose Point. She will also visit Chantilly, Eloquence, Strasbourg, and Chrysanthemum. |
sounds like a good day!
|
[QUOTE=kchaptergphib;2080204]Well, let's see...
They don't show Candlelight or Fairfax, so I don't know about those. http://www.silverqueen.com/sterling-...re/fairfax.asp Here is Fairfax. Now, back to the story..... |
When do the girls get their party schedule for the next round?
|
I'm going through as a sophomore right now too, nervewracking! And we get schedules tomorrow morning!

day two of open house
Rainy day in Columbia - many compromised hairstyles! Here is information from my daughter on the six chapters she visited today.
Chrysanthemum - had a great conversation with a girl who also participated in science olympiad in high school and is a chemical engineering major - in her words, they "totally nerded out" - she really liked this group Eloquence - some fraternity boys blew an airhorn right outside the chapter about two minutes before the social was supposed to start, and the girls did their walkout early - then they realized they were the only ones who came out and went back in. My daughter said she felt so bad for them. Once she got inside she talked to a girl who was really nice - they talked about the chapter's philanthropy quite a bit - she said she loved this chapter Repousse - she felt very emotional here as it is one of her legacy chapters - she talked with several different girls, including the chapter president and membership chair, and said that they talked about everything and the conversation was effortless - she said "I felt like I was home" Rose Point - she made a couple of friends in this chapter last year, but she said when she was in the house today she didn't feel like she did when she was in Repousse - she did talk with several girls about topics like greek week, sports, majors, etc. and said it was really loud and hard to hear Chantilly - this was kind of a surprise for her as she didn't feel much of a connection with this chapter, and it had been one she thought she was really interested in before recruitment started - she reported that it was really loud and the girls were nice, they talked mostly about studying abroad Strasbourg - talked with three different girls, said they were all very pretty, talked a lot about sisterhood with one of the girls, said the coversations were okay So, at the end of two very long days, she reports that the chapters she's feeling the most connection with are (not in any particular order): Grande Baroque Fairfax Eloquence Respousse Candlelight Chrysanthemum Tomorrow is sisterhood day. The blurb in the recruitment booklet describes it as "a day to sit back and relax and let each chapter educate the Potential Members about their sorority in a skit." This is the first day to dress up, which will be a nice change from recruitment t-shirts. The PMs can attend a maximum of 11 socials tomorrow. They will get their invitations/schedule at around 8:00 tomorrow morning. My daughter says she's so nervous about getting cut from her favorites that she doesn't think she'll be able to sleep. I can sympathize!!! I will post her invite list tomorrow morning. |

Can't wait to hear more! |
My daughter just called and was very happy that she received 10 out of her 11 top choices. She is happy but also sad as many girls did not receive as many bids. Her Pi Chi indicated that grade cuts are severe and that they were VERY strict this year due to the large number of girls going through rush. I hope that the weather is more cooperative today as they get to wear sundresses versus shorts and tshirts.
|
My daughter is also attending 11 today. The most severe cuts will probably be after today's round.
|
My daughter has a full schedule today - she will attend 11 socials. She is so excited! She was asked back to the following chapters:
Francis I Rose Point Acorn Chantilly Fairfax Strasbourg Grande Baroque Candlelight Chrysanthemum Repousse Eloquence |

Glad to hear the good news about your daughter!! |
Love this story, glad to hear your daughter was invited back to so many parties. Best of luck to her!
|
You are so right! Invites not bids! My daughter just texted me and said to go to all 11 today they will be socializing into the later evening hours. I would have to assume that the cuts tonite will be severe! She did talk to a gal in her group who did not have a full day of parties and was told that several of the sororities already did their grade cuts and that they were extremely strict according to their Pi Chi. As most of you are --I am anxiously awaiting the days report.
|
Yes, going from 11 today to 5 tomorrow means lots of consideration from both the chapters and the PNMs!
|
There are 4 girls from the high school that I work at that are going through Mizzou rush. I wish them all well. It seems to be a very intense process there. I think that tomorrow morning may be the time that many PNMs take themselves out of the process.
|
My Pi Chi told me that all of the houses have done their grade cuts, which ended up being very harsh for me since I'm a sophomore with just "okay" grades. I only ended up being invited back to two houses, both of which I'm very fond of, but I'm super nervous for tomorrow when I could be dropped completely. It sounds like your daughter has a very good chance with any of the houses if she's made it through this round.
|
12 hours of scheduled events is kind of tough on the PNMs!

Do they preference tonite? What times are the parties tomorrow? I sure wish I would have looked at her schedule before we dropped her off!!! 7 parties tomorrow instead of 5. They must be longer than the 25 minutes!

sisterhood day
What a long day for all the girls! Socials went from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, with preferencing afterwards. My daughter was very impressed with the time and effort that went into all of the skits - apparently they are quite elaborate. She said that every house had dancers as part of their skit. Some had slideshows and several had singing. I can't really go into the details as it will be obvious which chapters she visited. Here is what she reported.
Candlelight - the skit was "absolutely mind blowingly perfect," and she talked with a really nice girl who had transferred from another school Rose Point - she felt really at home and said the skit was hilarious Francis I - the skit was okay but nothing completely amazing Chantilly - she said this chapter blew her away today - it was by far the most emotional and many PMs were crying - her opinion of this chapter changed completely from yesterday Fairfax - hilarious skit, one of the main characters was good enough to be on Broadway Eloquence - still loves this chapter - skit was great Grande Baroque - really funny skit, talked with several girls including the president and a vice president Strasbourg - really made a connection with a member who had also gone through recruitment as a sophomore, wonderful skit Acorn - skit was okay and she talked with the same girl the whole time Repousse - skit was absolutely amazing - she is truly worried about getting cut tomorrow as this is her current favorite Chrysanthemum - skit was okay, had good conversations PMs can attend a maximum of seven socials tomorrow for philanthropy day. The chapters that my daughter put as her top seven were: Candlelight Rose Point Chantilly Fairfax Eloquence Strasbourg Respousse The remaining four she had to rank in the order that they would be bumped up if she does not get all of her top seven. The remaining four, in order, were: Grande Baroque Acorn Chrysanthemum Francis I She says she had a very difficult time with preferencing this evening, and would actually be delighted to go back to any of the chapters that weren't in her top seven list. They are adding one more social time slot to the schedule tomorrow to help spread out the large number of PMs. Apparently some of the chapters had 100+ girls attending some events today! Dress tomorrow is recruitment t-shirts and shorts again. Socials start around 9:00 and end around 4:45. |
Mizzou Mom - it sounds like your daughter is having a good experience by keeping an open mind and enjoying rush. I wish her the best. I have a son who is a sophomore at Mizzou. He got a bid from a fraternity in the spring and will be pledging this fall. My daughter is a high school senior and is pretty sure about going to Iowa State next year. She wants to rush. Does anyone know how intense the process is there? Do they suggest rec letters at Iowa State? She is a legacy through me. Thanks for any info anybody may have.
|
I know there's an Iowa Stater on here somewhere/sometimes, but I'll fill in just in case. Iowa State has a nice Greek system that has quite a few chapters but pledge classes are not huge. There will be cuts and recs will be appreciated I'm sure, but probably not mandatory like the southern schools. Like most moderately competitive schools, presuming she has the grades, reasonably good conversation skills and an open mind, she should find a home. My nephew is loving his time at ISU right now, although he's not in a fraternity.
|
Well, it wouldn't be a good story without a little drama. My daughter was invited back to six chapters today (out of a maximum of seven), but was cut from several of her favorites. Fortunately, she still has six amazing chapters left. Today, she will be attending:
Grande Baroque Strasbourg Candlelight Eloquence Chrysanthemum Acorn Repousse (my chapter :() cut her. This was her favorite and the one I was really worried about. She was also cut by Rose Point, in which she has some friends. I don't think she was expecting this at all. There were some tears this morning and I only got to speak with her briefly on the phone. But within 30 minutes I had a text from her saying "I'm just going to put my head up and be gracious to the houses that wanted me back. If they want me, I want to be with them." I couldn't be more proud of her than I am at this moment. |
I just got a quick text and cant read the picture she attached. She said that she was not invited back to her three favs but was happy with the other ones and has a full dance card today. I am so proud of these mature young women that we have raised!!!
|
Missou Mom - it sounds like you have a lovely daughter with a good head on her shoulders! I'm sure she will do well and when it's all said and done, find the sorority she was meant to be in.
