The University of Texas Austin-A Hill Country Recruitment!
My daughter is going through recruitment at the University of Texas Austin this week and I will document her journey by using the wonderful Texas Hill Country Towns that are beloved by our family. The schedule of recruitment is as follows:
Wednesday, August 17 7:00-Convocation I Thursday, August 18 9:30 a.m. -7:15 p.m.-- Open House-(13 events) 8:00 p.m.-- Convocation II Friday, August 19 3:00 p.m.--Convocation III 4:30-9:35 p.m.--Philanthropy Day (up to 5 events) Saturday, August 20 9 a.m.-2:05 p.m.--Philanthropy Day, Cont. (up to 5 events for 10 total on Philanthropy Day 1 & 2) 2:00 p.m.--Convocation IV Sunday, August 21 3:00 p.m--Convocation V 4:00-10:45 p.m.—Skit Night (up to 6 events) 10:00 p.m. –Convocation VI Monday, August 22 4:00 p.m.-Convocation VII 5:30-10:30 p.m.—Preference Night (up to 3 events) 10:00 p.m.—Preferential Convocation Tuesday, August 23 5:00 p.m.-Bid Day Convocation There are 13 Sororities that participate in Formal Recruitment…I will call them… Wimberley Luckenbach Boerne Dripping Springs Fredericksburg Blanco Gruene Kerrville Llano New Braunfels Horseshoe Bay Leakey Burnet Projected Weather Forecast for Austin that week: Highs 103-105. :eek: Low’s Mid to High 70’s It’s going to be hot week so hopefully everyone is prepared for this crazier than crazy heat wave! Personally, I extend my best wishes to every PNM going through recruitment and a big hug to all the moms that have the privilege and the honor of giving encouragement, support and voice of reason to all of the beautiful, lovely ladies going through recruitment at UT! I'm pulling for Gruene, I've been there to eat at the Sawmill and dance in the dance hall! And I'm also leaning towards Kerrville, b/c it's on my list of music festivals to do before I die.

Can't decide whether to root for Fredricksburg and meet you at Schlitterbahn or chill with Willie and Waylon and root for Luckenbach....:)

I am rooting for Blanco-there is a huge wildlife center out there that takes my sick opossums. I think the lows this week will be in the 80s though I go running almost every night and it is still in the high 90s at 7 PM. Good Luck to your daughter!

Yeah! I lover your code names!! Good luck to your daughter and to you as the mom..I was there last year and it was a real roller coaster!! I just left Austin yesterday and it was hot, hot, hot!! make sure your daughter has one of those battey operated fans..it will come in handy!!

Convocation is tonite, Open House parties start tomorrow! Good luck to all of the PNM's and to all of the wonderful chapters at UT! My daughter said that there were around 1100 girls registered which is quite a few more than last year:) They are so excited!

To all the PNM’s, I wish you a successful recruitment. Please stay hydrated. It will be very hot all week. The hottest time of the day will be around 5 pm, so hopefully, you will be in parties where there is air conditioning.
Ohh.. Since all of the hill country is nice, I am going for Fredricksburg. |
I'm gonna go with Dripping Springs, in honor of the Salt Lick... although Llano has some kick-ass bbq as well. Those'll be the two I'm pulling for.

Good Morning....Convocation was last night and the rooster will crow very early this morning for my daughter's (I will call her Sweet Pea) group. My understanding is that because the number of girls going through recruitment (1098) parties will be staggered and Sweet Pea's group has a 12 hour day ahead of them. All the girls were given pale pink T-Shirts to wear today and most are matching those with khaki shorts per the guidelines set by Texas Panhellenic. They received gallon size ziplock bags last night with ribbons tied to them as handles for all of their things. Some of the group leaders put in a little snack for them and Sweet Pea loaded her bag with things from the list on the thread here earlier this month. She is set to go! They also received a copy of the UT recruitment guide and you can find a copy here. :rolleyes:

Sunshine is a legacy to a specific house on campus and she knows it can be a blessing or a curse. I am crossing my fingers it works out beautifully for her and she that she has many blessings during this recruitment. So to all the PNM's at UT Austin today....have a wonderful day, make many friends, open your hearts, open your minds and close your ears under the tents! ;) |

I bought my daughter's at CVS on the drag but it was the last one..Everyone caught on that they needed one after the first day..Good luck in finding one..it really came in handy! Good luck to your daughter also!!:)

I think the number is 1098...which like LBM said in the perfect world would be 84. Not sure what "percent" drop or are released prior to them coming up with quota but I bet quota is higher this year!

I don't expect to hear from her until late this evening but I am sure she is doing fine! She was super excited to begin the process. Do you know if UT uses RFM for their quota system? The chapter I used to help with (obviously not UT) used it and I know the methology pretty well...but I guess I never paid attention if UT uses it...I am guessing yes, but that would be just a guess.

Based on a lot of conversations here on GC, I don't know of any medium or larger sized Greek system that doesn't use RFM. Dealing with rush matching by hand is SOOOOO last century.

I was told the last time that many went through at UT they had summer town rush and only invitational parties. Wow, are they having to make some major adjustments for the crowd.

Non-RFM schools are few and far between and are typically VERY small (like 3 sororities or fewer.) The vast majority (including UT and all other competitive recruitments) are RFM now.

Kerrville-Liked the girl and the conversation flowed well. She was introduced to the Chapter President and the Vice President of Recruitment and the rusher told her she hoped to see her tomorrow.
Burnet-The girl was really nice but the conversation felt very forced. Leaky-was rushed by two girls. She didn’t care for the first girl but really liked the second girl. She liked this house but was not sure she loved it. Blanco-She really liked this house! She really liked the girl she talked to. She felt at home there and the conversation was easy. She was introduced to the VP of recruitment here. Boerne-She really liked this house. It was really loud here and she had a really hard time hearing her rusher and she felt the whole situation was really crazy there. She hopes she gets another opportunity here to actually get to hear what the girls are saying. She says this was the only house where noise was an issue. Dripping Springs-She really liked this house. The rusher here was just really easy going. She really hopes she goes back here. Fredericksburg-She really, really, liked this house. She felt this girl was just fun. The conversation was more pop culture based and a nice break from “what’s your major?” New Braunfels-She really loves this house. She spoke with two girls here and she thought the conversation flowed really well here. She is not sure this would ultimately be the house for her, but she is excited about the chance to go back. Wimberley-This was her absolute favorite of the day. She was rushed by one girl but was introduced to three other girls. She felt these girls really showed her what sisterhood was all about and is praying they are on her party list tomorrow. This is the front runner. Luckenbach-She really felt that the second you walked in you could tell who was on the bid list and who wasn’t. She spoke with someone for a few minutes and then she was introduced to so many people and it was just as if they were burning time and they treated everyone the same way but she just felt they didn’t want to get to know anyone but it was just a big social party…very awkward. Gruene-She really liked this house and her rusher was sweet and nice and she got introduced to her rusher’s big and she felt once the big came in, although Sweet Pea was still very much part of the conversation, she just felt like it was awkward. Llano-The girl she talked to was nice but she thought the conversation was forced and she was not comfortable there. Horseshoe Bay-The rusher was really nice but she was felt the rusher was really showing her tiredness. (it was the rusher’s 17th party…I’d be tired too) Sweet Pea felt she was holding up the conversation. She had to rank their bottom three and they were: Burnet Luckenbach Llano Convocation is scheduled @ 3:00 but she said they will not get their invite list until 3:30 tomorrow. First party of round 2 is at 4:30. |

Ok so the invite list for Round 2 is out and the max invites were 10 and she received 8, with her mental top 3 being included!! (optimistic hip hip horay!): My only question that did not get answered before she had to go is why she has less than 5 parties today, but more than five tomorrow. The guidelines originally said parties would be 5 & 5 over two days and I can only speculate that because of the larger numbers maybe they are doing 6 & 6 or 7 & 7 to accommodate the larger numbers. She did say tomorrow's parties were from 8:00-2:30 and originally they were scheduled from 9:00-2:05. Due to the very large number of PNMs, it was decided to add 5 parties to Philanthropy for a total of 15. There are 7 today (Fri) and 8 on Saturday. That will cause some PNMs to have an uneven split between days. Additional parties are also added to skit night. This is very exhausting for the actives, but so very exciting to have so many PNMs.

Does anyone have any idea what they are projecting quota to be? I would think we will be seeing one of the larger pledge classes some of these chapters have seen in a long time. I know for me I have never been a numbers game person, as rush is a process of the heart but I find a higher number exciting for UT Panhellenic!

Philanthropy Round-Over 2 Days
So Sweet Pea attended parties at the following houses: Gruene Wimberely Dripping Springs Blanco New Braunfels Kerrville Llano Leakey She attended the party at Gruene and really loved their philanthropy. She had a good conversation with her rusher and enjoyed learning more about the chapter. Wimberley, her original front runner, again made a very strong showing but keep reading to find out what she thought about the overall process of recruitment and how it effects that thought process. Dripping Springs-She really had a great time here today. She felt stronger about this chapter during this round. Blanco-Sweet Pea is really loving this chapter. She liked that they stressed to her the importance of academics and she had a great conversation with her rusher. New Braunfels-Again, nice conversations and she enjoyed her visit here. Kerrville-Again, she really likes this house. She felt the rusher was really trying to sell her on this particular chapter. She let Sweet Pea know that they head great things in store for skit night and she was bumped to the President and they had a good conversation. Llano-She really liked the philanthropy here also, but felt the conversation was more about her rusher talking about life at UT than trying to get to know her. Leakey-She really liked how the rusher explained their philanthropy. Sweet Pea felt that her rusher was focused on the same questions of round one. She didn’t think she progressed here like she did with the other houses. Sweet Pea was really happy after today. She had to rank her bottom two and she ranked Leaky & Llano. She said if she had to pick one of the other six as “the one” she could not do this at this point. She is glad that recruitment is a mutual selection process because she wants the computer to do the selecting! She said she is hoping for a party schedule tomorrow, but knows big cuts are coming. She knows it only takes one. She said she is looking for a home that balances academics, the philanthropy and social activities. She has heard how some chapters do this via her conversations, and is looking forward to getting to know the other chapter’s stance on this balance. At this point she does not have a front runner, which she is happy about because she will be grateful for any house on her party list, even Leaky & Llano. She recognizes that given more time, and meeting different people, she can change her perception at any of the houses! They have moved convocation up to 2:00 tomorrow…so until then….Sweet Dreams UT PNMs! |
Okay, I'll go for Wimberley, then! Wimberley is the home of the (yeaaa!) fabulous Rocky River Ranch!

Skit Night….All Parties are tonight. Each house will host 7 parties and PNMs will max out at 6 houses each. Sweet Pea was invited back to 6 houses, one of which she ranked in her bottom two yesterday.
So Sweet Pea will be attending the following parties: Wimberely Dripping Springs Blanco New Braunfels Kerrville Leakey After tonight’s round, each PNM will rank her choices, ideally going to a max of three tomorrow. Of course it only takes ONE! So one is always better than none! Good Luck to ALL UT PNMs tonight! |

Ok so Sweet Pea had a great night at skit night. This how it went down:
Leakey-She thought the skit was just really strange. Her rusher was a bit quiet but she was introduced to some officers. Since she really liked all the houses yesterday and she was waiting for some type of fireworks, etc, and this did not happen here. Wimberley-She really enjoyed her time here. She continues to love the balance of Scholarship, Social, and a Philanthropy that really speaks to her. She can see a home here for herself and she is really excited about what a future here would be like. Dripping Springs-A house that is very popular and Sweet Pea was happy to see them on her list, but today, they just didn’t deliver the feelings she was looking for. She still really likes them and was having a “tent talk” block about ranking a “popular house” outside the top three. Kerrville-This house was certainly showing the love tonight. Sweet Pea had contact with earlier rushers and officers and she enjoyed the skit. New Braunfels-Sweet Pea had some concerns about this house earlier in the week. She was concerned about the balance it was striking between Scholarship, Social and Philanthropy. She said by far the skit was the most well done and funniest. The great time she had here left her scratching her head (not in public of course!) in utter confusion. Blanco-Again, this is another house that was really showing the love to Sweet Pea and Sweet Pea was really happy with how things progressed here. So she was really confused as she sat in front of the computer. The only thing she was really sure of was placing Leakey last. She is really torn between the last five and said she could see herself at any of the five houses, understanding Dripping Springs may have just been having an off night since she had loved them earlier. So she took a deep breath and hit enter……. 1. Wimberley 2. Kerrville 3. Blanco 4. New Braunfels 5. Dripping Springs 6. Leakey Even though New Braunfels completely dazzled tonight, Sweet Pea chose Wimberley, Kerrville and Blanco because they had consistently delivered all week and after reviewing her journal for the week she decided….slow and steady wins the race. With that said, she is having separation anxiety with New Braunfels and is glad that this process is back in the computer’s hands. She honestly could see herself at any of the top 5 she has listed (Knowing she really liked Dripping Springs all week...and maybe they were just "off" tonight). So now she waits…….. Pref Night Invites go out at 4:30 tomorrow night. |
