Alabama (Bama) recruitment 2011

A couple of threads are co-mingling Auburn and Alabama recruitment up dates. As large as their recruitments are, they each need theri own special thread.

So good luck to all the members, PNMs, and alumna who will beginning the process in a couple of weeks at Bama. My daughter is on the chapter member side this year, and is anxious to get back to campus. But I know many of the students will be heartbroken when they see the city of Tuscaloosa after being away for 3 months. Gamma Phi and Phi Mu both lost members in the tornado which is incredibly sad.

A special good luck shout out to Delta Gamma and their recolonization recruitment. Can't wait to hear about their new pledge class later in the month.

Hopefully Zillini and a few other UA advisors will get us up to date in numbers shortly.

Roll Tide

Biggest recruitment in the country!
We're quickly approaching the 1,700 mark in PNMs.

arrowlady 07-29-2011 03:26 PM

Very exciting and overwhelming at the same time

KSUViolet06 07-29-2011 03:33 PM

I cannot believe it is recruitment season all over again.

They allow those two to mix?

I've worked with chapters who lost a sister at the end of the previous school year or during the summer and recruitment was very, very difficult for them, especially Pref. My thoughts will be those young women.

Zillini 08-01-2011 09:01 AM

After 15 years of advising, I resigned last fall. I think I put in my time. ;) I have to admit it's been a bit of an adjustment this summer. I think I nearly forgot that there were other things to do rather than prep for Recruitment during June & July. :D

Anyway, I won't have access to up to the minute info like years past. I don't want to bother the advisors for info while they're working their tails off. I know from experience that about the last thing any of them need is a call from even a well meaning alum who just wants to chat and get the latest scoop.

That's the total student population of some colleges. Yikes!

Good reason for all PNMs to have their recommendations in line!

Zillini: You have certainly put in your time! And you did a great job for your chapter! I know the women will miss you. I trust they gave you a lovely retirement party. And like most of you, you probably won't totally go away....just take a break and find some other way to help the chapter (till they recycle you down the road!)....and thank you for giving all of us here on GC such wonderful insights.

We're all proud to call you our PH sister!

Cheerflyer 08-03-2011 09:38 PM

Time to start the 10 day count down!
I can't wait!

KSUViolet06 08-03-2011 11:13 PM

I feel like I say this every year, but my biggest piece of advice to PNMs at these larger schools (and their parents) is that whether you get 12 invites, or 7, or 2, you can only get ONE bid. So try not to panic over the number of invites you have after first round. That first day of cuts is hard, but try to remember that every day.

So many parents and PNMs come in here saying "omg what is my Suzie going to do!!!! She only got 4 invites and all the others in her group got full schedules!!!!" Just relax and see what happens before jumping to the immediate conclusion that lack of a full schedule = she probably won't get a bid.

Nhfulmer 08-08-2011 04:40 PM

Zillini, I know from experience that it is an adjustment. Thank you for your time - without good advisors, no chapter can truly succeed. I agree - we are proud to call you our PH sister!

bamamama14 08-08-2011 09:07 PM

I'm going to miss Zillini's post. She was always accurate and informative in her posts, and gave great advice to PNMs and their Moms. I hope my daughter's chapter has such an advisor.

Nhfulmer 08-09-2011 09:48 AM

I heard yesterday that 1724 girls are signed up for recruitment and there were still 5 days to go (4 days now). They have already broken the record set last year and look like they are headed for the largest rush in the country again. I don't know whether to send congratulations or condolences!!

AXOrushadvisor 08-09-2011 09:53 AM

How many Chapters at Bama?

Nhfulmer 08-09-2011 10:01 AM

Fifteen NPC chapters will participate in formal recruitment. Delta Gamma (new colony) will participate in the first round and then rush following that week. SDT does not participate in formal recruitment. In total, there are 17 NPC groups on campus.

just curious, why not?

FSUZeta 08-09-2011 04:32 PM

^as jerry seinfeld says, "I choose not to"(in his case, run). i think that it has been said before on gc that they feel more comfortable with informal recruitment.

Ok. I just thought it was a mandatory thing for NPC's to have to participate in formal recruitment when there was more than 2 NPC houses on that campus. Learn something new everyday.

No, it is a mandatory thing to have a chapter of Panhel. (i.e. you can't just have a "Greek council" or the like - you need to have an NPC chapter that follows Panhel rules and regulations.)

Titchou 08-09-2011 09:19 PM

1741 as of today....

Okay. That makes sense.:)

Hi ladies! Let me start off by saying how incredibly wonderful this site is! WOW I could have really used two years ago when DD1 was rushing. I want to wish good luck to all of the PNMs and their mothers for this years' recruitment. DD (who is a rising junior) is on the sister side and very excited. 2 days! Roll Tide :)

Tidemama 08-12-2011 08:03 PM

Oh, forgot to mention, I found the rendering for the new AGD house on their website today. Has anyone seen it? It is going to be beautiful when it is done!

Sorry for the double-posting, just thought I would share!:)

FSUZeta 08-13-2011 10:16 AM

there is a neat thread about greek housing in the greek life forum and we have seen it over there. i believe they also have the proposed floorplan for delta gamma. and there are many, many photos/renderings of beautiful greek housing all over the country!

I did not know that, thank you very much FSUZeta! I am heading over there right now to check it out!

honeychile 08-13-2011 02:11 PM

Zillini, I'm going to miss your posts too, but after 15 of Advising, you deserve your own Golden Lion! Hope you're still going to be around!

Part of me is absolutely stunned by how many women have signed up for Recruitment! I'm trying to get my head around how each sorority is going to get to know that many women on anything but the most superficial way! I hate to say it, but I'll bet there's some serious cuts after the first round. Hope I'm wrong!

DubaiSis 08-13-2011 03:07 PM

I think just to keep their head above water they're going to have to make massive cuts. It's unfair to the rushees, but what can they do? You can't have 1000 girls going on house tours! I think there are going to be A LOT of girls happy to know they still have a chance when rush is over. Both SDT and Delta Gamma could have more girls coming out of the woodwork than expected.

FSUZeta 08-13-2011 03:26 PM

now a days, the way sororities invite pnms back often is based on several years statistics of their return rates(the percentage of pnms accepting invitations back to a sorority). for instance, sorority A usually has a very high rate of return(98%), so they are not allowed to ask back as many pnms as sorority B, who has an 50% return rate. so the sororities won't make massive cuts just to keep their heads above water, but according to rfm. and while sorority A won't be asking back every pnm they met, sorority B conceivably could.

Sure, 1700 can go on house tours!;)
Open house rounds - there are 23 parties - remember, there are 16 sororities participating in the open house rounds (all less SDT but plus DG).
Philanthropy rounds - SDT and DG do not participate (DG just this year), so 15 sororities hosting 16 parties.
Skit rounds - 9 parties
Pref rounds - 4 parties.

I know some of the sororities (heck, probably all of them) have separate groups doing each day of open house rounds, so few members have to do all 23 parties. I'm assuming certain officers have to be there for all of them, of course.

honeychile 08-13-2011 11:44 PM

FOUR Pref parties?! I thought I'd freak out after two!!

AnchorAlumna 08-14-2011 12:38 AM

Hey - it's the BIG time!:D

DubaiSis 08-14-2011 01:42 AM

OK, so they have a lot more 1st round parties than chapters. That will help. I would think with these numbers they will want to add a party or 2 for Philanthropy round too.

But you mention something that is completely foreign to me - not every member having to participate in every minute of rush. That actually does make a huge difference. I never had that luxury!

AnchorAlumna 08-14-2011 01:50 AM

Philanthropy rounds do have an extra party - 1 extra party. Don't ask me how they came up with that.
Honestly, I can't even imagine not having to do every party (well....maybe I can). But the houses simply won't hold all the current members and PNMs at one party.
