Tiffany "Key" Jewelry and Recruitment

My daughter is considering wearing a Tiffany "Key" with two of her recruitment outfits. One is gold, the other silver. The Gold one would be worn on Skit night (round before pref) and the silver on the first day. I know the key is a symbol for some sororities, so is that just plain weird? She loves the pieces, but has others she can use, but she prefers the keys. I just would not want a sorority to think she wearing "their" symbol. Any opinions would be great.

I think it's pretty well known that these are popular now. I would, however, refrain from over doing the key. Maybe wear it one day and not two. I think wearing the key one day looks like a girl up on current jewelry fashion. Wearing is more frequently looks like someone who has an agenda when that fashion statement is also a symbol of a certain chapter she may also be looking to join. That's my $ 0.02. Others may not agree.

Hmmmm, well I guess it would depend on if she gets invited back to Kappa! :)

Kappamd 07-27-2011 07:56 PM

I would avoid it if only because there's a good chance that a lot of sisters at Kappa will be wearing that type of jewelry, so it could be construed as weird on multiple levels.

Assuming there's even a Kappa chapter at the school in question. If there's not, then I don't see a problem.

Actually she could avoid the "Kappa" wear completely on the gold one, because I was wrong and she would be wearing the gold key on round two, and that is over two days. So if Kappa was on her schedule she could just wear it on the "non" Kappa day. But would that make another houses feel strange. Maybe just the silver one on the first day? I think the silver one is more "trend jewerly" but the gold one, is really a beautiful piece (grad gift) and maybe pushes the envelope too much?????

Yes there is a Kappa Chapter

Does the gold one have a Fleur de lis?

Eightisgreat 07-27-2011 08:05 PM

Yes....with four diamonds. They don't carry it anymore that I can see. I bought it almost a year ago and held on to it. They have a clover one that is similar. It was the one she wanted and as you gold has only gone up up up.

Eightisgreat 07-27-2011 08:08 PM

I am leaning toward on a no on this. She loves the piece but I find it weird. We will find something else. She has other pieces but "everyone" seems to have those too...she was just looking for a unusual piece.

A gold key WITH a fleur de lis?

NO

Your gut is right on this.

Now I concur. The gold key is out.

Absolutely right, the gold one is out!

FSUZeta 07-27-2011 10:05 PM

agreed. no keys, kites, crowns, anchors, arrows, owls, daggers, etc. best to avoid any symbols that can be connected with a chapter on her campus.

Aren't these over yet???

DubaiSis 07-28-2011 02:35 AM

but just to be clear on this, her school does have a Kappa Kappa Gamma chapter, right? If it doesn't, I wouldn't sweat it. I'm guessing from the question they do, and then I would definitely avoid the key with the fleur de lis.

I think your daughter should wear what she wants to wear.

Yes there is a Kappa chapter at the University of Texas.

I had the same concern eightisgreat as my daughter got a Tiffany Key for graduation. We decided for her not to wear it...didn't want to send the wrong message..

FleurGirl 07-29-2011 05:10 PM

Personally, I think the silver one would be fine for the first day if she really really wants to wear one, and I'd stay away from the gold all together. It would probably be best to avoid it, though. Keys are pretty popular so if I saw it on someone during round one I probably wouldn't think too much of it other than "oh, that's pretty". Later in the game though, once she's familiar with all the sororities and their symbols, it may come off the wrong way. Actually, it would almost certainly come off the wrong way. Honestly it's best to stick to non-symbols. Pearls, simple necklaces, anything other than any chapter's symbol.

gee_ess 08-01-2011 09:33 PM

I would say, NO.

Chapters read all sorts of stuff into PNM behavior - real or imagined - and the PNM pays for this every time.

hootyhoo 08-02-2011 01:01 AM

I agree with gee_ess on this one. Even if there are no intentions behind the jewelry, someone no doubt will read into it. I know girls who wore certain colored dresses on pref because that was the house they wanted, so it would definitely register to an active even if it is just a small piece of jewelry. It'd be unfortunate for a chapter/s to think she came into recruitment already decided and cut her, when that is not the case. Better to be safe than sorry. She could always wear the necklace on bid day.

If you have to ask - the answer is no
