Looking into Greek
 

Hey everyone I just came across GreekChat and figured I'd lurk around. I hope to be attending West Virginia University next fall and would like to rush/pledge a Fraternity. Hope to find someone or some alumni from WVU to get a little more information.

No one singing country roads and wearing gold and blue around here? haha

My husband is. He's parking his butt on the couch for tomorrow's Marshall game. I, however, am NOT a WVU fan. But good luck anyhow!

I'm ready to be done with this little series. My husband is a Marshall alum, so he rooted for them, but normally he, his family, and my entire family are WVU fans since we're ALL West Virginians (at least by heritage and most by birth). It just ends up being a very awkward day for us.

The way I see it, as long your together with close friends and family you can't wrong on a Sunday afternoon watching some college football; no matter who you root for.

You're not from WVa are you Nick? That's a wonderful attitude, but before you head up to WVU, let me assure you that few in that state will share it. :D. Moutaineer fans are not the "let's all set back and have a great football viewing afternoon together" type. More like the "We better win or someone's gonna die (usually the coach)" type. But again, sweet thought - I'll remind my family of that as the season progresses if WVU is losing a game. They'll throw things at me -probably sharp objects....;)

He WAS stuck to the couch for forever, and super mad when it was called. He lives for college football time, especially WVU. It's amazing the pride that state has for that school, even if they didn't go there. And no, I didn't go to Maryland, but you can PM me if you want to know.

Hey, Nick. I'm advising a sorority colony at WVU, so I probably won't be much help. :)

I'm a Pitt alum and we have a great rivalry with WVU (the "Backyard Brawl"). AXOmom is right about the 'eers attitude toward football, though! Definitely not warm and fuzzy :)

Speaking of, I heard they just made the act of couch burning a felony!

^^^Well fortunately Moundsville (the state pen) isn't THAT far. Should be filling up quick if that's now a felony. :)

I am one of those who is not an alum of WVU but still grew up on Mountaineer football and to some degree basketball (I have NO idea what I'll do if they ever play my Ducks. Thankfully, it hasn't yet come up). WVa is a great state that gets a bad rap in a lot of ways and because of that they cling to the things that do well pretty tightly. In the end it probably becomes about a lot more than football for West Virginians.

As for you KillarneyRose -Is Pitt a school? I grew up thinking it was just a profane word I was not allowed to say. :p

One of my close friends went to Pitt so her friends have disowned her for doing medical school in WV, and she is greeted with cheers of "Eat Shit, Pitt" frequently... including at the last wedding we went to.

She takes it in stride, and still wears her Pitt gear everywhere. However, she did learn not to ask the local bartenders to turn on the Pitt game. :p

^^^LOL. Well imagine the discomfort of my poor uncle who breathed Mountaineer football and moved to....wait for it....Pittsburgh. Suprisingly, they liked the city anyway. Being Steelers fans salavaged things for them somewhat.

It used to be they hated Penn St. even more (which meant Penn St. fans couldn't safely drive in the state of WVa). My dad was very impressed with my husband the first time he met him SOLELY because he had a reasonable working theory about why WVU kept losing to Penn St.

Try watching an NCAA basketball Final 4 (or even last 8) having gone to UK and the other team is WVU and your husbands father's entire family is from West Virginia. We watched it at my in-law's house - UK was losing and I could hardly watch the game (I think I went to the computer to drown my sorrows). Oh, and my father-in-law and my husband gloated for days until the next game. They are really die hard fans there at WVU! :)

^^^Exactly why I'm glad UofO is on the other side of the country in a conference that rarely comes into contact with the Big East. Not only would it probably create deep-seated and permanent family issues - I'd have to somehow split myself in two. On the bright side (for you that is - not me, your FIL or husband), the years when WVU will beat UK in basketball are few and far between - so in those years you gotta' give us a little gloating!

Haha, no I'm not from the WV but I do live VERY close. I'm about 40 minutes from Morgantown, in Deep Creek lake MD.(Wisp ski resort, Swallow Falls, etc.) A lot of graduates from my high school attend WVU. So I know what you mean when talking about the "eer fans" tho. Guess I'm just not an extremist like some. I remember back in 9th grade I actually got to play ultimate frisby on on Mountaineer feild with some of the players and wrestlers when I attended a summer wrestling camp. AWESOME experience. Why I'm such a big fan of WVU athletics is because of the pride and school spirit that campus and state has towards every sport. I'm from a small town where sports are a way of life so I guess I relate somewhat. I just have the mutual respect for everyone that shows any school pride/spirit. Be proud! Football is always going to be around; friends and family are what matters the most. Combine the two and that's something special. Rant over:D
I ended up in Morgantown that night and I don't think I have ever sat that long just waiting. I say it was because of season opener, Marshall, and the atmosphere of gameday was consuming everyone. WV loves their sports that is one thing for sure! Just like any small town. It's something the people live for and our proud to support. I love to see gold and blue and the WV plastered all over cars and trucks. I swear, it doesn't matter what state I travel in far or wide you can always spot out the WVU supporters.
I'm still learning all of this greek life/terms, what is advising? Creating? founding? Sorry if it's a stupid question.

There's always going to be a few of those ;) but hopefully my attitude won't change once actually a student!

Great answer. It does become alot more than just football.
I learned that its Pittsburgh one night. I had a HUGE WV decal in my back window of my truck, after a late night out, that window was gone. Now Im an avide fan of the WV car magnets. But i still represent when out in other cities, just a little smarter about it now.

Nick you sound like a great young man with a good perspective on things, and I'm sure you'll be a credit to WVU and any fraternity who is lucky enough to have you (just don't tell them about your well-balanced views on college football right away. Wait until you're an alum and in graduate school-LOL). Good luck, have a good time and Go Mountaineers!

Thanks! :D could be due to the fact that I am not going to be a TRUE freshman tho, I didnt go to school right after high school. Im doing at year at our community college here to bump up the GPA and test scored getting back into the swing of things. I'm 21 and see things differently than your 18 year old freshmen I guess. Call it those little "life lessons." Im very excited about where my life is going. (ranting, again. sorry)

An advisor is an alum who helps out with the running of the chapter so there is consistency over time. I don't know "creating." I guess you'll have to put it in context. When fraternities start up a new chapter on a campus, some call those new members "founders." Some call them colony members, or maybe that is just sororities. But it's the guys who go through a huge amount of work to establish a fraternity on campus and are thus given extra respect by subsequent members. Or it can mean the literal founders of the fraternity from 100 years ago or so.

By creating, I was talking about founding. Thanks for the help tho!

As much as I tried not to, I have to admit I laughed my a$$ off when I read that :)

DubaiSis's explanation is perfect. I did my undergraduate at Wisconsin and am here for medical school. When I found we were chartering at WVU, I offered to help advise them through the process. So, mainly I stay out of the picture but make sure they are following rules, completing requirements, and I poke my head in during recruitment and Initiations. I'm also there for advice. It's a great way to be involved as an alumna.

I'm hoping this game against NORF goes better. I need both my teams to win!

That's awesome! Good luck with rush and the new members! This game was driving me crazy the first half! Glad we decided to play at least one half today. We better get it together before Maryland next week!

I love all this WVU football talk!:D I really believe WVU fans are unlike any other in the country. I think part of it is because there are no professional teams in the state, so WVU and Marshall (ugh) are who you grow up watching. If you're from WV or went to WVU, you're a fan for life. I love that there's an active alumni chapter here in Charlotte and that I can still watch the games with my fellow Mountaineers. Its not the same as Morgantown but its as close as I'm going to get down here! In the words of Pat White, once a mountaineer, always a mountaineer!
