Greek Chat has a search function that's really helpful.

Also do some research on UCSC's web page (try "greek life" or "fraternities and sororities").

ucsc15 07-03-2011 02:49 AM

i tried to do research but people just say greek life there is almost dead theres 11 sororities on campus but it doesnt say much more than that.

FSUZeta 07-03-2011 08:40 AM

if people are saying that greek life is "almost dead" at ucsc, then i would guess that it is not super competitive.

incidentally, if you are referring to npc sororities, you don't choose which ones to "rush for". during the recruitment process you meet all the sororities and you rank which sororities you would like to revisit, while the sororities are deciding who they would like to see again. a word of caution: it is in your best interest to wait until you are actually participating in recruitment before you make up your mind about which sorority you want to join.

What I recommended was that you go to the UCSC official site (it'll have .edu in the url) and search there. Going to gossip sites is not, IMO, a good idea, for more reasons than I can recount.

There is, I believe, a GC member who went to UCSC but she hasn't posted in quite a while; not sure if she'll see this thread. There are two NPC sororities, two NPHC sororities, and several other local and multicultural sororities.

UCSC is a far cry from the SEC schools, or from other competitive recruitments.

ETA: you've started a couple of threads here on GC and have been specific about your interest in a particular NPC chapter; it might be prudent for you to kick back and lie low until recruitment is finished. I do wish you the very best of luck, and hope you find a home.

ucsc15 07-03-2011 03:58 PM

i've been on the official website it only lists out all the sororities and fraternities.
i didnt really understand the rush process at first i thought we had to select one and attend their events and see if we got a bid to come back. i honestly didn't know we were rushing for multiple sororities.
i'm truly sorry if i offended anyone. i know that all sororities are great in their own way and i would be happy to rush for any of them

FSUZeta 07-03-2011 04:21 PM

we are not offended. we realize that not everyone knows about greek life. people most often get a little aggravated when folks come on gc and start asking specific questions before looking around themselves.

in the recruitment forum there are some great threads at the top of the forum pages that i think it would be helpful to you to read.

SWTXBelle 07-03-2011 04:27 PM

I think you might benefit from the book "Rush Right" - http://www.suresister.com/

ucsc15 07-03-2011 05:02 PM

thanks ! i'll definitely check them out ! i really appreciate it.
i've been trying to find stuff about sororities at santa cruz because i know each school does it a little differently. i've tried to look it up on google and stuff but the best they can give me is collegeprowler and that was still no help.

HannahXO 07-03-2011 05:07 PM

The sororities most likely have websites or at least facebook pages. google "ucsc *name of sorority*" for each of the groups.

SWTXBelle 07-03-2011 05:08 PM

ALL NPC sororities are great organizations.

As to what they are like at UC-SC - that's what recruitment is for! Don't rely on gossip, or tent-talk, or what your boyfriend thinks, or what things were like for your second cousin twice removed who was an ABC at another campus 20 years ago.

If you want information on the NPC groups, go to their websites. Many of them have their magazines on-line, so you can read them to get an overview of the group. You can certainly read up on all the groups on-line, but what is going to matter most is HOW YOU FIT IN WITH THE WOMEN IN THE CHAPTERS AT YOUR CAMPUS.

ucsc15 07-03-2011 05:17 PM

yeah i've looked at the facebook page for the ones that have one they all look like a lot of fun and a great group of people ! i'm so excited for rush! I can't wait for school to start mostly for rush week

33girl 07-03-2011 06:10 PM

OK, UCSC's student orgs site is really jacked up and it's no wonder the OP doesn't know what she's doing. They don't differentiate at all between the types of sororities and often whether or not the group is a fraternity or a sorority. Plus the "fraternities and sororities" page doesn't actually list them.

Mass LOL at the "international multicultural fraternity Theta Chi."

ucsc15 07-03-2011 06:19 PM

I would assume that by the lack of information the site gives then the greek system isn't that big there. but i'd still like to find a way to learn more about it so i know what to expect in the fall.

Titchou 07-03-2011 07:16 PM

Perhaps you could call the Greek Life office????

HannahXO 07-03-2011 07:32 PM

Based on the FUBAR website, I kind of doubt they have a way to find the phone number (if they have a greek office..)

http://www.cityonahillpress.com/2009/05/21/greek-life/
this is a slightly better article about the greek climate on campus

ucsc15 07-03-2011 07:39 PM

i heard they dont have a greek row so i doubt they have a greek office.
& thanks for the article it gives me an idea of how people see the greek system.

You're joking, right? That's a hell of an assumption. I went to a school without a "Greek Row" and we definitely had a Greek Life Office.

ucsc15 07-03-2011 08:17 PM

sorry i didn't mean to assume. but i've looked through the directory and stuff theres no greek office.

My alma mater's similar to yours in that Greek Life is very small compared to other schools. We didn't have an office dedicated just Greek Life. Instead, we were a part of the umbrella organization that governed ALL student organizations on campus.

I'd start there for some information.

ucsc15 07-03-2011 08:29 PM

we have a SOAR office and thats in charge of all clubs and sororities and fraternities but theyre closed all summer.

Titchou 07-03-2011 08:37 PM

The web site would lead one to believe it's open during the week - M-F.

What she said.

Obviously I know nothing of UCSC. Still, I find it VERY hard to believe that an office responsible for Advising and dishing out Resources to an entire campus would be closed all summer. Skeleton staff, maybe...but not totally closed.

Damn, where's LucyKKG?

ucsc15 07-03-2011 09:25 PM

i'll send them an e-mail and give it a shot. but i've emailed other departments for the school and they never e-mail back. thanks for the advice.

Why do kids these days rely on just email?

Are you near campus that you can go and pay the office a visit? What about trying to CALL the number on the website? If you really want the information you seek, get off the computer and take action.

They probably don't email back because if their work inbox is just as bad as mine, messages get lost among the ones that are of highest priority.

Titchou 07-04-2011 07:58 AM

Yes, pick up the phone and call! Bless her heart!

ucsc15 07-04-2011 08:08 AM

its july 4th i don't think they'll be in office. but i'll definitely call first thing on tuesday
oh by the way happy independence day everyone ! I hope you all have a great time with your friends and family.

Titchou 07-04-2011 09:38 AM

Sweetie, we all know they are closed today. God love these millenials!

phidippides5 07-05-2011 12:48 PM

AS a UCSC alum and someone who now works it Greek Life let me give you the UCSC Greek Life run down
1. Greek Life at UCSC isn't that big, That being said its growing and those who are involved in it for the most part have a great experience.
2. Recruitment: There are a number of local sororities at UCSC that are not affiliated with a national organization they recruit primarily in the fall, you r first chance to check most of them out will be the OPERS fall festival which is right before classes start. currently there are only 2 NPC sororities (organisations that are local chapters of national organizations that belong to the National Panhellenic Conference) Kappa Kappa Gamma and Gamma Phi Beta, they will to be at OPERS Fest. These two organizations have and a very low key semi structured recruitment in the fall (meaning you don't need to rec's, if you have them good for you but don't stress yourself out getting them) There are also a number of culturally based sororities who will do recruitment thought out the year. Most advertising for recruitment events is done on the bulletin boards and bus stops around campus.
3. For more info on the 2 NPC organizations recruitment i would just google Kappa Kappa Gamma UCSC or Gamma Phi Beta UCSC and email the chapters directly to ask about fall recruitment. I think that will get you more information than SOAR.

ucsc15 07-05-2011 10:21 PM

thanks that helped a lot ! i actually tried calling the activities SOAR office but they didn't seem all that helpful about the greek life. i've googled a lot about Kappa Kappa Gamma and Gamma Phi Beta they both look great and i can't wait to rush!
& would you say the NPC sororities are very competitive to get into? because i've heard at some schools a lot of people rush and not many people make it.

phidippides5 07-06-2011 02:16 PM

Last I heard it wasn't super competitive there was only one NPC sorority till 5 years ago when Kappa started

PeppyGPhiB 07-06-2011 07:16 PM

OK, I Googled and immediately came up with a chapter website afor my sorority there, which includes some info/contacts for recruitment. It's not hard.

http://gammaphibeta-epsilonomicron.celect.org/home

At any rate, if I were you I wouldn't stress about it over the summer. UCSC is one of those schools where you can just sign up for recruitment when you get to campus in the fall.

ucsc15 07-06-2011 11:24 PM

thanks ! i'm definitely interested in Gamma Phi Beta especially since they help raise for Make-A-Wish. I've been volunteering with Make-A-Wish for for the past year in LA and I love it !

DubaiSis 07-06-2011 11:56 PM

This is the sort of information you DON'T want to share on GC. A Kappa who sees this and figures out who you are could recommend to cut you since you are more interested in Gamma Phi. My assumption is you're just expressing enthusiasm, but it could bite you in the arse.

ucsc15 07-07-2011 12:52 AM

oh i definitely didnt mean it like that. i think Kappa is great too they do the AIDS walk which i participate in every year as well ! I'm excited to rush for Kappa is well. I just saw the long posted above and i just wanted to note something that stood out to me. But i would love to be in Kappa or Gamma Phi. they're both amazing sororities.

lemony 07-14-2011 10:42 PM

My friend's little sister is in one of the two Panhellenic sororities at UCSC and absolutely loves it. I think you should be fine without recs. Good luck!

knoxie13 07-29-2011 11:50 PM

UCSC15, don't discount the local sororities quite yet. Everyone has something to offer. I'm in Kappa Zeta at UCSC and I love it. We're a little smaller and low-key, but we have a great time together and do a lot of great things. I would advise checking out all of the tables when they flyer the first week near the bookstore and also at OPERSfest. If you are looking for a sorority that is more general, IE not a specific culture, there are 5. 2 NPC and 3 locals. There are also a few service GLOs and a pre-med Sorority. Keep an open mind!

What can I say, I have the memory of an elephant....
