Publicity Stunt? 51 yo unfamous actor weds 16 yo girl

Prepare to shudder, people. A 51-year-old character actor who appeared in "The Green Mile" and had recurring roles on "Lost" (as Horace Goodspeed), "24" and "The X-Files" has gotten hitched to a 16-year-old.

Yep, 16.
E! News reports Doug Hutchison married "aspiring country singer" and "former beauty pageant queen" Courtney Alexis Stodden on May 20 in Las Vegas (minors can marry in Sin City with the permission of a parent or legal guardian).

"We're aware that our vast age difference is extremely controversial," the newlyweds said in a statement. "But we're very much in love and want to get the message out there that true love can be ageless."

http://movies.msn.com/movies/article...4080&GT1=28101

If she's really 16, what grown adult gets emotionally and physically fulfilled by a child?

If this is a publicity stunt, FAIL FAIL FAIL.

amanda6035 06-20-2011 05:28 PM

Ewwwwwww.

She looks like a tramp...and the comment on the second page about her being in a picture wearing an american flag and not much else...hmm.

Honeykiss1974 06-20-2011 05:36 PM

..and her parents gave consent because????

ColdInCanada11 06-20-2011 06:23 PM

... I feel physically awkward. He always creeped me out on Lost

that blonde person in the photo is supposed to be 16? good grief! she looks more like 26.

Because there are trailerpark trash people who have mildly attractive kids they hope will become famous and buy them a big house  I mean she looks anorexic, like she got her moves from Jersey Shore, and was allowed to date someone over 3 times her age. What is left for her at this point? Ugh, I am so over these trashy people getting any hopes of air time.

Of course let's not get on this nasty, pervy freak who can't find a woman anywhere near his own age to date. Apparently some juvenile moron is the only person who would dare do him.

nolesgirl 06-21-2011 12:35 AM

She doesn't even look close to 16 - and I don't mean that in a good way! At 16, most girls are pretty anyway, and I don't think any 16 year old should ever have to wear that much make-up or dress like that!! It's soo gross!

Meh, not any different than the Eastern European 14 year olds who are in Vogue looking 30. Except that's high fashion gross, and this is trailer trash gross.

Optimus Prime 06-21-2011 01:01 AM

I think she'd be looking for a meal ticket more than air time. Also, I don't believe she is 16.

psy 06-21-2011 01:10 AM

Yuck.

Would any sex they had still legally be considered statutory rape?

Xidelt 06-21-2011 01:24 AM

The publicity stunt is her pretending to be 16. Her website says she competed in the Miss USA pageant in 2009. It did NOT say Miss Teen USA. She's also quite obviously had breast implants. There are also photos of her promoting her CD outside of what appears to be a strip club.
No way she's 16.

You beat me to it.

Update: I just googled other pictures of her.

If she's 16, then I'm 18.

Wow, this is unnecessarily harsh and classist. CG2, ity?

DrPhil 06-21-2011 10:10 AM

Okay...this is a good time to ask why do a lot of (usually white) people say "trailer trash?"

I always found that to be classist and also implying that anything that's not white perfection must be "trailer trash."

I have no idea. I hate it. Lots of folks live in trailers. Also, I prefer not to call people trash, in general.

And, I hear Roma/Travellers referred to as "trailer trash" before, as well as members of various Native American nations (who, uh, don't have too much of a choice if they live on the reservation because the US really FUBARed that whole thing up), and I think it's completely ignorant of any cultural traditions/ramifications inherent in those types of communities.

As a side note, no, I don't really think this woman is 16. But if she is, I really hope she's actually entering the union of her own accord.

I dislike the use of "classy" and "trashy." I think it's dumb, based on assumptions and labels, and I refuse to believe that most people who use those terms are as "classy" and "nontrashy" as they insist--even if they don't live in a trailer.

And oh yeah I was getting "trailer trash" mixed with the annoying phrase "white trash." I guess they are related but different, dumb labels.

I too hope this is consensual.

As for whether she's 16, tons of makeup, some plastic surgery, and/or airbrushing can make someone look older. She may be very 16 when interacting with her and seeing her without all the gooblygob.

It is complete classism against people who can't afford that house with the picket fence and who don't dress or act the way 'they' think people should. And I think it has some racism in it as well - minorities live poorly and well that's just expected, but WHITE people who live poorly have the option and therefore are just trash.

People aren't trash, people aren't 'trashy' no matter how much one dislikes seeing bra straps, double-wides, or whatever. And apparently according to DZTurtle, anorexia is trashy too. Yay for bashing mental illness!

I've heard Roma/gypsies*/Travellers called names, though never trailer trash, and mostly in Europe where there was a higher presence. But I've almost never heard 'trailer trash' directed at non white people. Sure, plenty of slurs, insults, and general assumptions that the nonwhite people are terribly irresponsible, alcoholic, and lazy - oh. goodie- but the trash insult does seem to come from a place of 'you could do better, why aren't you like ME'

ETA: She's claiming to be turning 30 in September 2011. If you're 4 years older than she, I will believe that she's really her age...3 years ago. :p I guess it only worked for MJ because he was home schooled.

I meant to include a * that some communities prefer the term gypsies despite its negative connotations elsewhere.

That said, yeah I know there are communities of Roma and of Travelers in the US, just haven't lived close enough to them to see the prejudice. Similarly not lived near a reservation or large population of American Indians. But those stereotypes still exist.

I have issues with Walmart, but I'm generally neutral on them. They are buying more locally, and a job at Walmart pays better than the summer job I had for high school - a local downtown dept store, I got minimum and nothing more for 2-3 years - they have issues, yes, but no company doesn't. I do need to read up more on the lawsuit that just got bumped out of class action status though. I agree that there's some discrimination but I also agree that it's not necessarily a corporation wide policy that falls under class action.

WTF? Boy, this comment is even dumber than the comment that set off this whole trailer trash hijack.

Sidenote: "Classy" is an acceptable modifier when it describes inanimate things. "A classy event." "A classy dress." "A classy restaurant."

It gets squicky when applied to people. "A classy personality" actually works, too. And, in some ways, "trashy" is the same.

Walmart does a darn good job of making the pros (at face value) seemingly outweigh the cons. I'm not mad at them for being a kickass capitalist giant in that regard. The discrimination lawsuits will take much longer.

LOL. Some idiots are so terrified of topics. They are the same idiots who think race is synonymous with racism.

*******
The View is currently talking about this 51 yo and his 16 yo bride. They are operating on the assumption that she is really 16. They were saying it's sad that her parents relinquished their rights. Whoopi said that young brides were common at points in history and in other countries. The others responded with how young brides (which were conveniently always more common than young grooms) are an issue particularly when these are kids who barely know their own minds, let alone having the ability to know what makes someone else happy. Relationships and marriages are complicated enough without a grown man marrying a kid.

I'm sure DF will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the threshold for pedophilia is 13 for a true clinical diagnosis. Plus, the fact that even if she IS 16 she doesn't LOOK 16 would also cancel out the pedophilia assumption. Now if she were 16 but LOOKED 12, that would be cause to reevaluate that theory.

Either way, divorce is common enough and easy enough to attain that I'm just not all that worried about this situation, sad as it is.

I hope they can get it annulled instead of a divorce.

Getting married at 16 or so wasn't unheard a couple of generations ago. My Italian grandmother was 16 when she married my grandfather who was 25 at the time. These days, that sounds horrible. They were married for 52 years before she passed away. In this day and age, it definitely sounds squicky, especially to a 51 year old. (although truly, that man does NOT look 51). But yeah, the whole thing seems squicky to me. When I look at my 17 y/o daughter, I can't even imagine... <shudder>

Exactly.

*****

When child marriage and child labor are discussed, people (not AGDee) bring up what happened generations ago. A lot of things happened generations ago. The question then becomes did we needlessly change our image of children (from just short adults to tiny tots who aren't mentally and physically equipped to do this stuff) or were and are we acknowledging the true differences between children and adults. Moreover, is a 16 yo capable of marriage as long as it is legal wherever she/he is and consensual? That's a moral question (regardless of what it's based on) if it isn't a legal question.

Maybe they were just darn good workers supporting their families. No.

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...eRzh6m7Oi1YtDw

AGDee 06-21-2011 10:39 PM

Society has changed significantly since then. She was not educated.. in fact, she didn't speak English well, even though she immigrated when she was 3 years old. Extended families raised the children together to a large extent. When it wasn't real family, it was "cousins", who included anybody who came from the small town in Sicily that they were from. They married people from their own town in Sicily, even though they'd all been in the US for more than a decade. Life expectancy was also not what it is now. We can allow adolescence to be longer because we have more time to work with.

AlphaFrog 06-21-2011 11:04 PM

I have never, ever, EVER heard "trailer trash" used to describe any of those people. If anything, the people I hear it used for are...ultimately...technically...WASPs!!

Bra straps showing are trashy. Period. I don't care where you live or what race you are. The end. :)

As far as 16 year olds getting married, let's discuss the Little House on the Prairie episode where Pa gave the okey-dokey to Mary getting engaged at 13 so she could get married at 16. Big hooters do not a mature woman make, Pa.

Oh 33girl, you made me lol so hard. But seriously. I seriously doubt that this girl could be 16. She looks at least 25. However, there is a certain female I know who has the same thing going on. At 18, she looked 30. It's sad, but it does happen, hence the term "butterface."

I hate you. LOL.

That reminds me of how often high school boys look older than their age and are sometimes treated like men. These are still BOYS. Having a certain type of body and even a deep voice does not a mature man make.

ASUADPi 06-22-2011 11:04 AM

I don't believe for one second that she is 16. But no matter her age she definitely needs to change her slogan from "All American Girl" to something else. All American Girls don't marry 51 year old actors at the age of 16. Just not done.
