Anyone else not really head over heels with their GLO's colors/symbols?
Don't get me wrong--as an initiated member (now alumna), I love and respect the symbolism and significance of my sorority's letters, badge, symbols, colors, etc., but honestly, on an aesthetic level, our colors and main public symbol just aren't my cup of tea, and I have trouble finding things with our symbol that I also like on a visual/non-symbolic level. I remember kind of being turned off by our colors and symbols during my COB open house, actually, although thankfully, I didn't let such superficial thing keep me away from what turned out to be a truly wonderful sisterhood.
Anyone else feel the same way? |

I wish that we had a cute symbol that popped up often, like a crescent or a key or something like that. I do get jealous of some of the more common symbols.

I wasn't a huge skull person (associated it with punk rock and such) until I joined and found out the meaning. Now I love them. Same with nautical/boat themed things. Was never into them until I joined, now I love them and look out for boat stuff when I'm out shopping.
The average person probably doesn't grow up thinking "I love keys/arrows/etc!" but it BECOMES special to you as you learn what it symbolizes for your particular org. |

So yes, I do sometimes wish that we had colors that we could wear all together, but I'm fine with what I have. It's not like the colors ever turned me away or anything and I happily wear each color individually. :D |
I actually find this interesting because on one side you shouldn't join an org because they have pretty colors, but on the other side you aren't a fan of the colors, but love the mission of the org.

Pink and green isn't my favorite color combination.
Nor is the turtle my favorite animal. Roses and diamonds are my favorite though. I think it's kind of fun to talk about. Doesn't affect my love for my org anyway. |

I quite like our symbol as it is portrayed on our badge (in a stylized/symbolic way) and in smaller doses, like on a charm bracelet or necklace, and I love it in terms of its meaning to me as a member, but I don't think it will be my favorite decoration aesthetically. I do love the look of our letters, however, and love having them around (as well as loving their meaning, of course). I also love, love, love our flower. Even though our colors aren't my favorite combo, it seems weird or almost disrespectful to see official stuff in other colors, as they do, as others have pointed out, have meaning to us. |

You're being dumb. |
As an active I was NOT thrilled with brown and mode. Love the symbolism - but dressing in brown and beige during the 80s? Not so much. Luckily, they've grown on me, and it does help that brown became popular - it's great accented with pink, and I love the fact that our colours are ours alone.
|
I like the symbols, but the colors are really hard to combine, and as they don't really suit my complexion I tend to stick to the symbols.

i am happy with ours.

There have been threads over the years in which people talked about what they like or dislike about their org's colors and symbols. This thread is nothing new. |
Arrows? Wine and silver blue, and wine carnations? I love them!
Though I can see the difficulty for some groups. My son prefers not to wear red and purple per se but, say, gray shirts with maybe his crest in the corner or on the back. I've heard Betas and Lambda Chis say the same and I get it. With Auburn shirts, I prefer not to wear a blinding orange and blue shirt but rather, gray or natural with orange and blue accents somewhere else. |
I love the wine & blue, and arrows, but I'm not fond of the angel. Angel merchandise tends to either look kitschy, childish, or porn-y.
I'm kind of envious of Kappas, because I find keys/fleur-de-lis everywhere. But I think Pi Phi colors are pretty striking together, and unique. |

Bronze, pink and blue translate in the real world to yellow, pink and blue. That has a baby shower feel to me so I rarely ever wear our colors. Anchors are easy to find and very popular all the time so that doesn't seem outdated. I don't think they wore colors and symbols back when we all were founded like we do today so that wasn't on the founders' minds. And I too like the values the colors stand for...but that wasn't why I pledged.

I do have a long sleeved t-shirt in navy though, but that was given to me *shrug* |
I love my sorority's colors--blue and white, and black and red. My high school was blue and white, and so the carry over was easy. Then Glasgow's colors include blues too, so yes, very partial.
The only problem is finding non-terrifying versions of our mascot, the Siamese Cat. It has become a running pledge class tradition to give an "ugly cat gift"...but the ease at which these are found is somewhat concerning. |
Ha ha ha, are you my sister who coined the motto "Down With Dot" on Facebook? I explained to her that a lot of adopting an official mascot was to give ASA a more cohesive identity - in the same way that you see keys and think of Kappa. Personally though, I'm a bigger fan of the Phoenix than Dot or Raggedy Ann. I guess because it's so not-cutesy.
As far as our colors, jewels, flowers, and symbols (different from the mascot) I dig them all, although I know there are some sisters out there who hate red because they look crappy in it. |
Same. Love our colors, love our symbols. I'm always happy to have a big pot of black and gold pansies on my front porch every summer, and I'm tickled pink anytime I find something with a kite on it.

My wedding colors are a variation of our colors (didn't pick them because of my sorority, they just look good together! ) |
I should say I love, love, LOVE our crescent - as long as it's waxing!

I've always loved Pi Phi's colors and also Alpha Phi's, incidentally, although I'm a member of neither org. I think they go really well together. I also think ASA's phoenix just looks awesome--as does Phi Sig's sphinx--and that AXO's lyre is really pretty. Also, *all* the badges are gorgeous. |
I really like black and gold together in 90 percent of the ways I have seen it put together.
On casual paraphernalia, it doesn't matter much. But recently the powers that be have been pushing us to purchase gold blazers with our fraternal design on it. I don't like it. |
I LOVE purple and white. I seriously own 5x as many purple shirts as I did before I was an active and it's wonderful. Purple looks great on my skin tone though, in any shade (although a jewel tone would look good on anyone). I also love sailboats and the symbolism behind them. Next jewelry purchase will likely be a small sailboat necklace.
The only thing I'm not crazy about is the skull and crossbones. Again, love the symbolism of it, but I doubt you'll ever catch me wearing it unless it's on a tshirt (which our recruitment shirts this year are set to). But I won't do a necklace or anything like that. Screams punk rock/goth to me. |

--- I love our colors, but find them hard to wear, that's not the same as not being head over heels with them though. I care less for my school's colors, or lack thereof. Blue and white are boring, particularly in collegiate block letters. |
Yeah colors or symbols can be difficult to wear, or not look good on everything, without darn near making you frown or cringe.

Hearts and doves are pretty easy, snakes slightly less so, but more ideal for jewelry. /what you said |

When I was in college, I had a Penn State shirt made in pink and black, the school's original colors. Everyone at school thought it was awesome, but when I wore it back at home in New England, a couple of my friends said, "Ugh, why did you get one of those 'girly' jerseys?" And when you tell people that Penn State's original colors were pink and black, it usually leads to a look of disbelief and a Google search. :p |

Before going off to college, I tried to go for the grunge look and before that the hippy look (what was I thinking?) so, pink was NOT one of my choice colors. After joining I learned to LOVE pink and now incorporate it into my every day life. I love our symbol the quatrefoil because I see it all over: hotels, fountains, jewelry, churches, cemeteries, etc. I will def. be incorporating the quatrefoil and color pink into my wedding! I have to say that I LOVE our symbols--to include our mascot, the lion! |

Agreed. While I love our colors, I rarely wear them in combination b/c the mixes I've found aren't the best. I usually will wear one of the colors in isolation though I did find a gorgeous maternity dress in maroon with a very pretty lavender print that I'll be wearing in Orlando next week at our fancy dinner celebrating our upcoming baby girl. :D As for jewelry, I have a LOT of pearl jewelry & though the amethyst isn't an official jewel, it's my birthstone & there is a lot of Sigma Kappa jewelry decorated with amethysts so it works for me. I don't particularly have jewelry with hearts, doves or snakes but I'm ok with that. |
I think I'm fairly lucky how mine turned out- green is my favorite color, and I dig the whole dagger/skulls thing. Teddy bears are ok, but the whole katydid thing is a bit weird. I know a lot of people that really love the nautilus shell as well.
And even though the colors are officially olive green and pearl white, I see stuff with all sorts of different versions of green on it. I'm not one for that bright, light green, but everything else looks great, I think. |
