Most overrated....

actor/actress/movie/book...you name it....

Actresses
1. Jennifer Aniston-I think she is so overrated as an actress. She seems to only do Rom-Coms and her characters are so the same. I can't say that I've seen one of her movies and immediately think "omg I have to buy this movie". I liked Marley and Me but quite honestly it was because of Owen Wilson and I loved the book, it wasn't because of her. I thought Picture Perfect was a cute movie, but it was just that, cute.

2. Kristen Stewart- Now I get that Bella has no depth as a character but really to portray her with no depth is pretty sad. When I watch the Twilight movies I think "god this could have been done so much better" in terms of Bella and Kristen's acting ability.

3. Vanessa Hudgens

Actors
1. Robert Pattison-I might get killed here by "Team Edward" fans, but his portrayal of Edward is just as bad as Kristen's portrayal of Bella. When I read the books I envisioned much better.

2. Russell Crowe
3. Zac Efron

Movies
1. The Gladiator
2. The English Patient
3. Shakespeare in Love
4. Titanic

Singer
1. Jennifer Lopez
2. Brittney Spears
3. Ashlee Simpson
4. Jessica Simpson

Off the top of my head :D

Movie: The Hangover. Just ugh.

TV Show: Glee. It's okay, but really, it is not NEARLY as big a deal as people make it out to be. Seriously, people act like I committed some kind of crime for not following this show regularly.

Book: Eat Pray Love. I just don't see what the fuss is all about.

33girl 06-06-2011 08:13 PM

Oooh, I like. Some of these are going to be slightly old school.

Music group: REM and Metallica.

Movie: Anything by the Coen Brothers. I finally saw The Big Lebowski and just thought it was...stupid. And the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Director: Judd Apatow.

Actor: Seth Rogen, Steve Carell

Actress: Julia Roberts

Model: Gisele Bundchen

Singer: Esperanza Spaulding

FHwku 06-06-2011 09:08 PM

Tatum Channing is like the new Richard Gere.

Robin Williams. i get it, you're hyper and wacky. you and Steve Martin did some funny stuff 30 years ago. but if we were all stranded out at sea, in shark infested waters, i'd toss your ass outta my fuckin boat with the quickness. i wouldn't even eat you. you'd be stale and generic.

christiangirl 06-06-2011 09:15 PM

Actresses
I agree with Jennifer and Kristen. And I'll throw in Angelina while I'm at it. I know that'll piss off some people but I've seen some of her movies and she's not exactly awesome--she's mostly lips and I got those.

Actors
Zac and Robert

Movies

Friday. It was funny but not "OMG best comedy ever" funny.

Singer

Vanessa Hudgens
Pitbull
T-Payne/Weezy/Akon/all the other hypemen turned main act

I like Glee, but I understand the feeling. I've never been into Grey's Anatomy and when I say I'm not people react the same way. So for me Grey's Anatomy is highly overrated.

I haven't read Eat Pray Love, but I wasn't impressed with the movie. It just dragged and dragged and dragged. I kept looking at my watch thinking "is this movie over yet?"

Sex and the City- I liked the movie but people acted like the TV show was the next best thing to sliced bread.

ASUADPi 06-06-2011 09:46 PM

Book-Breaking Dawn: I was extremely disappointed at the end of the book. It was a great amount of build up and anxiety and then just a huge letdown. I read all the Twilight books after Eclipse came out, so I was a later "fan", but all my friends who are die hard Twilight fans went on and on and on about how great the book was and to me it was like "okay I'm done writing, the end".

The Sopranos

Thank. You. What IS it about this movie that everyone loves? I thought it was ridiculously dumb.

And I might be alone on this one, but the most overrated movie: The Notebook. My roommate in college MADE me watch it, and even though she had seen it a dozen times before, she was balling at the end. I asked, "Is that IT?"

I wasn't impressed.

KSUViolet06 06-06-2011 10:25 PM

Movies and TV:

Twilight EVERYTHING.
Grey's Anatomy (I am the only woman in my age group on this planet who doesn't watch.)
Glee
The Notebook
Brad Pitt
Angelina Jolie
Chelsea Handler (I don't find her funny. Maybe I just don't get it.)
American Idol
The Bachelor
The Bachelorette

Music:

Eminem
Taylor Swift (if you quote Taylor Swift in your status referring to a guy, my soul dies inside)
Rihanna
Ke$ha
LADY GAGA. I just don't get it. Her songs sound like Ace of Base/Madonna and I don't get what is so "cool" or "edgy" about her. I am the only person on the planet who doesn't like her. lol.

princessamy 06-06-2011 10:57 PM

I don't like Lady GAGA either. She is just a fraud that kind of lacks talent.

I don't understand Lady Gaga either. I heard "Judas" for the first time the other week and all I can say is that it sounds exactly like a re-working of "Bad Romance"...including the chorus that doesn't fit with the song.

I also think 99.99% of all bands/artists played on MTV or top 40 radio are overrated but the worst offender ever is U2.

TV- Modern Family.....Not seeing the funny. Friends...King of Queens...George Lopez...never saw "it" with these shows either.

Books- Never Let Me Go. It was good, but nowhere near "the best book of the decade" as one critic called it.

Even though I liked it, I agree. There were so many elements that ended up being nothing because it WAS like she just got in a hurry to get it over with (if 600 pages really constitutes "a hurry"). I'd really like to read the *ORIGINAL* version that she gave her sister that was NOT a YA book and condensed New Moon-Breaking Dawn into one work. There might have been less "stuff" that ended up just being "stuff".

Agree with all of this. People especially look at me like I'm crazy since I'm big into musical theatre but don't watch Glee. I don't have time for that kind of commitment, I don't have a DVR, and it comes on during my Oratorio Singers rehearsal. I'm too busy BEING a musical theatre person to watch others do it.

Holy shit, yes. I was scratching my head after finishing it trying to figure out what everyone was on about.

My ultimate overrated group is the Dave Matthews Band. I DO NOT GET IT.

AnotherKD 06-07-2011 08:04 AM

1) Glee.
2) Mumford and Sons.
3) Lady Gaga. I had a ban on LG songs during my wedding reception, as she had just come out and I couldn't stand her. Apparently enough people bitched that the DJ had to come over to interrupt my talking with some guests to ask if he could play her.
4) Pulp Fiction. I've seen it multiple times. It's whatever. Not the greatest. Same with Reservoir Dogs, Scarface, Big Lebowski, etc that everyone seems to love for some reason.
5) Farmville. Stop sending me requests, I beg you.
6) Rihanna. Granted, I don't like poppish/r&b/"today's hits" type of music, but her voice is much more grating than the others out there.
7) Ben Stiller. I may get shit for this, but the only thing I like of his is Zoolander, just because there are some really ridiculous lines in it. Otherwise, he is just awkward and it makes me awkward watching him.
8) American Idol / The Bachelor(ette) / Survivor / etc. I don't get a lot of reality tv. Yes, I love me some Teen Mom and Real Housewives of NJ, but I think that's more to see the train wreck than anything else.
9) LeBron James. He doesn't even TRY when Cleveland gets to the finals, then blames everyone and everything but himself. Fuck him.

I know there's more... this is just what I've come up with this morning.

LaneSig 06-07-2011 10:34 AM

1- Anything with Vampires (Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, Whatever that show is on HBO)....Is it a guy thing that I don't like it? I've read and watched other things that were "girly".

2- 30 Rock

3- Alec Baldwin, Jim Carrey, Will Farrell...To me they are all 1 note and not that funny.

4 - Brittney Spears, Ke$ha, Cristina Aguilera....Interchangeable and not really talented. (I will say that Cristina can actually sing, but just sing the damn song! Don't toss in all the loopy-doop notes. Just freaking sing the freaking song.)

5- Independence Day.....Predictable. I kept waiting for something to happen.

Aside from #5, YES YES YES. And Will Farrell irks the crap out of me.

33girl 06-07-2011 11:03 AM

Completely agree with Lady Gaga. I don't have anything against goofy fun mindless pop music - I actually like some stuff by Katy Perry and Ke$ha a lot - but people act like LG is on a different/higher plane and she's going to have a career the length and depth of Frank Sinatra's. I don't see it happening.

Those Twilight people aren't vampires. I'll take a From Dusk Till Dawn character over "OMG TEAM JACOB" anyday

As long as you take Buffy the Vampire Slayer out of the mix, I'm with you. But Buffy rocks.

And I'm also with everyone who said Modern Family and The Big Lebowski. I've never made it all the way through either one. And I'm generally a Coen Brothers fan.

And a big yes on Jim Carey. Add to him Roseanne Barr and David Spade.

For movies, I'll have to add Forrest Gump (way too heavy-handed and sacharrine) and Out of Africa (I've sent paint dry faster than this movie moved).

As for singers, there are just way too many to mention. But Lady Gaga certainly tops the list.

This! I have a theory that there's some special message in those books that is going to make those who have read them all rise up and try to take over the world on the same day. I'm going to be the lone ranger out there trying to save them from themselves. :p

Too cult-ish for me, but I'm sure I'm going to have to read HP with my kids when they get old enough.

Have to completely disagree about Harry Potter -- at least if we're talking about the books. They are fantastic. The movies -- pretty good to disappointing. The over-marketing? Ugh.

I can truly say, though, that the Harry Potter books were by far the most fun books to read out loud with the kids. You can have so much fun with the voices.

Buffy's on a different plain. She didn't sit around all day (well, sometimes) talking about her tortured life and love.

Being Human (BBC and SYFY both) is also exempt. That show rocks.

AlphaFrog 06-07-2011 01:44 PM

Buffy et al realized it was ridiculous (in a good way) and didn't take themselves seriously (in a good way). That's my opinion of why Buffy gets a pass.

Yes, I like Twilight, but agree that it's not as special as they and their kind want to make it.

It takes A LOT to get me to laugh, especially at a movie, and Modern Family and The Hangover always have me laughing hysterically. I love Mumford and Sons, and I don’t think that they’ve been thrown in everyone’s faces the way that other artists mentioned here have been. And Independence Day rocks.

Lady Gaga needs to go. I’m incredibly sick of hearing about Angelina Jolie every other minute. Ben Stiller is the WORST actor… I didn’t even like Zoolander. LeBron James needs to get over himself… and everyone else needs to get over him, too. I’ve actually tried to like 30 Rock, but I just can’t do it. Baldwin, Carrey and Farrell – THANK YOU for saying this! .. I thought I was the only one! The Office is another show that I’ve tried really hard to like, but it’s just not happening. Steve Carell isn’t my favorite, either.

All of this. I don't find the Office or Will Ferrell funny. His entire screaming bit makes me want to run out of the room screaming.

I have tried so hard to read Jane Austen so many times, different books too! I never seem to make it past the first chapter or so.

1. Amen! I loved BEP before Fergie. I wish Fergie had gone away after Wild Orchid (they weren't horrible) went away.

2. I like The Office. :) I heard the original The Office (British version?) is better.

3. I think Alicia Keys has some good songs (my fav is "Like You'll Never See Me Again" (very Prince-ish) and I also like "Secrets," "Unthinkable (I'm Ready)"). Other than that, I think her VOICE is overrated. She's a wonderful writer and wonderful musician. I remember when she used to come on Teen Summit as a teenager and before she had a record deal. Awwww, time flies. :)

Does anybody think Zac Efron is a super-dynamic thespian, the future of American cinema, or even anything beyond a good-looking body that occasionally remembers lines?

Maybe I have a different definition of "Overrated" than some?

The problem with the UK Office is that David Brent (played by Ricky Gervais) is just soooo awkward that it literally makes me squirm. Michael Scott has this lovability (if that's even a word) to him that is kind of endearing and people kind of realize that his character, while an idiot, mostly has good intentions. David Brent is just slimy and weird. But, a lot of people like it a lot better. It only ran for a couple of seasons, though. :(

So, the American version lasted longer. I really like The Office. :) I also like Steve Carell.
