Who's having Convention in 2011?

I did a thread last year for 2010 Conventions and people who attended shared a lot of their memories in it.

I figured I'd do the same for 2011!

Who all is having Covention in 2011? I know that Kappa Delta, Alpha Xi Delta, and ADPi are. Anyone else? Where? Are you planning to attend?

Psi U MC Vito 05-25-2011 12:37 PM

We are, and unfortunately I do not have the money to attend. I am going to try to make it next year though since it's at home.

ETA: Forgot to mention it's in DC which makes me really sad I can't make it. That's what I get for being an undergrad again.

AOII Angel 05-25-2011 12:39 PM

AOII's convention is in Tuscon in June. I'll be going...it's just down the road! I'm excited since my bio sister will be attending as the delegate for the Baton Rouge alum chapter. It's her first convention. I just bought her a letter shirt for the first day since I know she doesn't have one. We all wear our favorite letter shirts on the first day. (PS. I told my husband that, and he looked at me crazy and said, "You have to pick your favorite letter for a shirt...like A or O or Pi?" Gotta love those non-social Greeks! I can't call him a non-Greek since he's really Greek. LOL.)

DreamfulSpirit 05-25-2011 12:41 PM

Omega Phi Alpha's will be in Charlotte, NC July 20-24, 2011!

Last year I got engaged at OPA's convention! Not sure if I'll be able to attend the whole thing this year, but by the time it comes around, I'll be married!

I'm even getting a yellow rose put in my bouquet for symbolizing that I got engaged at convention :)

AZ-AlphaXi 05-25-2011 12:45 PM

Alpha Xi Delta's convention is in Altanta July 6 thru July 10. This will be my 17th convention. I love seeing all my sisters that I only see every two years.

Wow! 17 conventions! I'll be up to 3 this year.

KD's convention is right after Alpha Omicron Pi's, at the same place. You better overpack! When I was at a KD convention at the Fairmont Hotel in New Orleans, one night at predinner announcements, someone told us that they'd overheard one of the maids say to another: "These sorority ladies have a lot more clothes than the last sorority ladies that were here." We laughed at our own overdoing it.

That fall I was reading the literature for the sororities that were making expansion presentations at the campus where I was advising, and one mentioned their convention the past summer at the Fairmont Hotel...the week before ours. So I know who that mystery sorority was, but again, not a knock on them--they probably are just more efficient travelers.

Ha! Ha! I can bring tons of stuff since I don't have to fly!

KSUViolet06 05-25-2011 01:08 PM

I confess, I brought at least 2 outfit options for every event.

In my defense, I was a voting delegate, so I needed badgewear for every day as well as something casual I could change into afterward, then I needed evening attire for the dinners. So yeah, I may or may not have brought 3 bags. And an extra carry-on of just shoes. lol.

Titchou 05-25-2011 01:36 PM

When I went to our Convention in 2010, I took 9 pairs of shoes - it was up to 11 but I decided that double digits was just too over the top for 4 nights!

I will be driving to convention. I am the representative for my alumnae chapter. This will be my 4th convention. My ex-inlaws live in Tucson so my son will be driving with me so he can spend a few days with them.

We have a tradition at convention for everyone to stand up at one of the dinners then sit down when they've called out the number of pairs of shoes you brought to convention. Some sisters compete to be the last one standing! We do the same thing for number of conventions and pieces of AOII jewelry (I'm gonna win that one!!)

LaneSig 05-25-2011 02:24 PM

We're having ours in Orlando in mid-July. It'll be my first convention as a national officer, so I'll be busy. Looking forward to it anyway.

I brought nine pairs to Convention last year too...and wore every single pair. :)

Convention was some of the best fun I had last year. I love my sisters and can't wait for next year's gathering in Phoenix!

KSUViolet06 06-08-2011 01:33 PM

^^^I hear you. We don't have Convention again until 2013 and I'm already planning it out (it will be my first trip to Disney EVER.)

I'll be at KD's Convention in Tucson. I think this is #12 for me. Every year I say no more but I change my mind at the last minute.

That's what I've heard! What hotel were you guys at? We're at Buena Vista.

KSUViolet06 06-25-2011 08:03 PM

People are starting to post about their Conventions in their respective forums, so I figured I'd bump!

OHNOITSJESS 06-26-2011 12:56 AM

A.O.E. has it every year. This year it's in Philadelphia and I'm going :) It's my first one.

I've noticed most organizations hold their conventions biennially rather than annually, is there a reason for this?

KSUViolet06 06-26-2011 01:57 PM

^^^^We are triennially!

I think the main reason = Conventions are really expensive for orgs and require a LOT of planning in advance. Hence the every 2 (or 3 years) thing. You're bringing together basically your entire org, so it's hard to do every year.

NutBrnHair 06-26-2011 04:39 PM

The Pi Beta Phi Convention is underway in Orlando now.

That's true, I wonder why we do it every year.... Not that I'm complaining :D

Our convention is specifically for fraternity business. This gives us time to vote in new international officers which serve for the biennium. We have a meeting called Leadership Institute in the even years at Headquarters that is strictly for training with no business as well as Leadership Academy every year in February for additional training. Our awards are given out each year at Convention and LI.

KSUViolet06 06-26-2011 08:30 PM

See, we have Convention every 3 years, but hold our CAB/Volunteer Summit (advisors and other alumnae volunteers) annually (in Convention years, we hold both together in from like Wed-Sunday.)

We also hold Officer Academy (collegiate officer and leadership training) annually in Jan (one in every region.) There's also Women of Character Institute for selected members over the summer (combined with CAB/Volunteer Summit.)

I'm surprised no one else posted for us.

We just had our 160th anniversary convention June 22-26. It was amazing! It was held at the Biltmore in Phoenix, AZ.

This was my 3rd convention.

One of the attendees, well she won Old Timers and this was her like 24th convention. It was pretty amazing.

We initiated the great, great, great granddaughter of one of our founders. That was an amazing initiation to witness! One I will never forget. (I'll also never forget it because the mom of one of my sisters initiated. Her mom is amazing and had been coming to our Christmas parties for 2-3 years and is just amazing. When I saw she was being initiated I started crying).

Our next convention is Dallas in 2013.

Sounds kind of like what we do. Convention is when there are business meetings and voting for bylaws and officers occur. Conventions for us are odd numbered years.
In even numbered years we do Volunteer Leadership Seminar (VLS) and IMPACT (training for upcoming collegiate leaders in the chapters), which we do in Atlanta.
In February we do District Leadership Conferences. This is for our newly elected officers who get some more training on their new position.
We also get chapter awards at VLS and Convention but DLC as well.

KSUViolet06 07-29-2011 03:39 PM

Bumping because I know several of you went to your respective Conventions? How was it??

AUAZD2001 07-29-2011 05:27 PM

I attended Alpha Xi Delta's convention in Atlanta at the begining of this month. It was my first and I attended as delegate for my Alumnae Association. I had the most amazing time and I met dozens of wonderful women I am so proud to call my sisters. I can't wait for 2013 when convention will be in San Francisco! I've never been there and I'm looking forward to a great trip. I've started saving already!

ProudandTrue 07-29-2011 06:30 PM

Phi Sigma Sigma's biennial Convention is currently underway in Orlando, FL! : )
