Obama's Birth Certificate Released

Did we really need to go there?

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content...d.html?sid=101

President Barack Obama says he's releasing his long-form birth certificate because the country doesn't have time for the "distraction" and "silliness" of questions being persistently raised about where he was born.

The president spoke at the White House today after taking the unexpected step of releasing the document, which supplements Hawaii's official certification of the president's birth there. Obama had released that during the campaign.

Polls show large numbers of Republicans continue to doubt Obama is a natural born citizen eligible to be president. A Saperstein Poll last September for The Dispatch showed that only 45 percent of central Ohio Republicans believed Obama's birth certificate showing he was born in the U.S. is legitimate.

Real estate mogul Donald Trump had seized on the issue as he weighs a GOP candidacy.

Just sent this to the bf who always brings this up. Thank you for posting! Even if it is a little  that this is such an issue

Upon landing in New Hampshire, Trump took credit for getting Obama to release his birth certificate.

"He should have done it a long time ago. I am really honored to play such a big role in hopefully, hopefully getting rid of this issue," he said.

Like most politicians do, I think this is a calcuated move on President Obama's part.

IMO, the "birther" movement looked unhinged, unable or unwilling to accept the 2008 verdict of the American voting public. Rants about the president's "mysterious" background made the president appear more sympathetic to other political audiences.

I suspect the White House has polling showing the issue's "benefit" has maxed out, thus today's move. Otherwise, this could have been done one, two years ago?

I don't think national politicians pour milk on their morning cereal until they poll-test and put the proper "framing" on how best to announce things.

Weirdly, this is EXTREMELY well-played by Trump, at least from a political/decision-making standpoint ... facts make very little difference to people who already hold a strong view on something, and with Obama's dissatisfaction ratings so high already (plus a dose of the Dunning-Kruger Effect), he might have just signed his own ticket to the GOP Convention.

victoriana 04-27-2011 01:27 PM

I'm going to be so disgusted if Donald Trump runs and gets the GOP nomination. His positions are re-fucking-diculous. See link for more info: http://www.washingtonpost.com/politi...y.html?hpid=z3
/hijack

I think it's silly that this is still an issue, but I think Obama did the right thing in releasing his birth certificate. I just cannot believe that people are still preoccupied with stupid, petty bullshit like this when we have way bigger issues to focus on.

I beg to differ. While Trump's antics make for entertaining news coverage and talk show debate the fact that GOP politicians collectively face-palm everytime the Donald opens his mouth leads me to believe that he doesn't have a chance in hell.

We'll see - and notice I just said he'd have a seat at the convention, and not that he'd win - but I'm not sure the 'bluster' level can't be toned down enough to satisfy the (increasingly corporate) political machine if and when he receives large-scale support from a disillusioned and angry Republican base.

After all, it's not like Tim Pawlenty or Bobby Jindal speak for the people - Trump is, in a weird way, the natural hybrid of what the Tea Party has become and what dumb folks think the GOP used to be.

I wouldn't underestimate him - doing so would implicitly overestimate the voting public, an act I can't recommend.

Trump's a douche, one with very little business acumen (some might say negative) and little talent other than self-promotion. But guess which skills are best rewarded by voters? HINT: Mitt Romney is the pertinent case study.

In Ohio's defense, if you've ever been to central Ohio you would understand. The people *shakes head* I'm very much a Republican and think this whole thing is silly.

That's another thing-

People, even people who's job it is to monitor politics, don't honestly know if he's serious about running for President or just using all of this media attention to breathe new life into the Trump brand.

adpiucf 04-27-2011 02:41 PM

Trump won't run. He has done this before. He talks about running, a buzz is created, and then he doesn't run... surprisingly he then closes some big deal. He is just trying to get people to watch his lame TV show.

Besides, Trump's former positions have been Pro-Choice and being pro-universal healthcare. Now, all of a sudden, he's a conservative? It's just for ratings.

I'm now waiting for the birthers to claim the released document isn't authentic.

While I agree that there's a good chance all of this is for publicity, this part isn't a big problem given enough "oomph" behind the candidate - most have issues like this.

Hell, McCain had similar problems last cycle.

Nothing new. I feel that a lot of politicians "find Jesus" while on the campaign trail. Didn't Obama's stance on gay marriage and abortion change as well around 2007?

ETA- By finding Jesus I mean adjusting their views to be more inline with or palatable to their political party or the American public.

I'm sorry and I'm not trying to say this to be rude or insulting, but to believe that Donald Trump and this incident has signed his ticket to the GOP convention shows that people really don't know what the GOP is all about.

The GOP on a National Stage is not defined by its Fringe, if it was so Steve Forbes, Ron Paul, and Christine (the witch) O'Donnell and others would have been serious nominees along time ago. Only thing Trump has done is push himself while making the Status quo nervous. Heck even the Governor of Arizona had to dial it back once it got to the point where the Fringe was trying to get bills passed.

Trump is not running and if he did throw his hat in, nobody wants a First Lady Milania. Not gonna happen. He's entertainment.

honeychile 04-27-2011 03:13 PM

My own issue with the President's birth certificate was that the one he had originally released would not have been valid for most lineage societies. I haven't yet seen it, so I won't comment further on it.

The Donald. My own feeling is that he is there to bluster for the GOP, until they can find a viable candidate. Right now, no one candidate stands out - I even got a call from a Newt Gingrich for President committee the other night!

But we aren't talking lineage societies. We know societies operate on a different mindset than most other things. Its about the government and what is recognized by the United States of America, and also respecting the will of a particular state in the Union in how they produce that information. What Obama produced originally is what the State Hawaii allowed to be released.

I'm a Repub, and I'll eat my damn hat if Donald or Newt becomes the Presidential Nominee. I'll write myself in.

I was just stating my own interest in the matter. Also, I have seen Hawaiian birth certificates that were long form - this is not of the magnatude to which it's reached.

My "right wing extremist" (self-defined) family members are saying that a "Certificate of Live Birth" isn't a birth certificate. Nevermind that my four grandparents, two parents, brother and self have Certificates of Live Birth.

Not true for DAR and UDC. What other lineage societies are you referring to?

Republican party didn't vett Palin, McCain did...poorly.

The reflection of Palin as a viable candidate is proven by the fact that she is NOT a frontrunner for the nomination.

She is just a tool, like Trump. Electrify the base, but you wouldn't really give her the nomination.

Understood in your own interest, but when your own interest shape your opinion, that's how Tea Parties are started. Just like what PreciousJeni wrote Certificate of Live Birth is not proof according to her far right.

Heck some states recognize the Family bible.

Maybe someone can clarify for me....

I watched an interview with Donald and George (Stephanapolous) and Donald was going on and on and on about Obama's birth certificate not being "real" because it said "certificate of live birth".

I have my birth certificate and that's what it says "certificate of live birth".

So I'm not understanding what the big damn deal was. Why was Donald (and probably others) claiming that his (Obama's) birth certificate "not real".

I'm asking because I truly don't understand what the big deal was.

Too me it is people who are anti-Obama raising a fuss trying to get him out of office by claiming he isn't a "natural born U.S. citizen".

The one issued today is an image of the original record. The other one issued previously is computer generated with the general facts of the birth, sans the fancy signatures. Usually the latter, if it contains the embossed seal of the Department of Health, is enough to prove one's citizenship and birth info (getting a passport, getting a driver's license, etc.).

Obama showed his birth certificate today. Kate and William get married in 2 days. What useless event will be covered on Saturday since nothing important like wars, earthquakes, storms, financial crisises are taking place.

I'm confused, what would a lineage society require? What wasn't on it? And considering the newly released doc is essentially identical to the previous version in included information, why would the new document be better?

Amen Sister.

This entire thing just makes me want to hit my head on a desk.

As for Trump and the rest... well it should be interesting to see where it all goes.

CutiePie2000 04-27-2011 11:10 PM

In the "olden days", a baptismal certificate (in some places) was considered on par with a birth certificate. This would have been even better if it was a baptismal certificate pretty much filled out in pencil on a random scrap of paper by ,by the presiding priest or whatever....:D

That's what Arizona was trying to include as valid identification of birth, baptismal and circumcision records as well as official ones. As you point out, there's little proof there.

LOL. Candidate HK1974 "Yes We Can.....Because I Keeps it Real in 2012"

I've seen speculation that the President released his birth certificate now to prop up Donald Trump, to make him look even more "effective" among his Tea Partier movement.

Elephant Walk 04-28-2011 11:08 AM

From what I understand, his college performance was sub-par to say the least.

He allegedly makes George Bush look like a genius.

Edit: And there are few things about Trump that are conservative.
