GPA

.

victoriana 04-27-2011 11:49 AM

In my chapter, a new member is absolutely not allowed to be initiated if she is below the minimum GPA requirement. I can't say that's the case for all sororities, just mine. I'd suggest waiting until you get your grades up to at least a 3.0 if you want to have more options during recruitment.

IrishLake 04-27-2011 11:50 AM

It honestly depends on the chapter. We couldn't really say.

I have valid reasons for not having the minimum gpa. I spoke to the sororities on campus and some said they won't take me and some said they would work with me.

I just don't want to go through formal all over again to not get a bid. Its so heart breaking.

I'm sorry if I come off sounding like a dick, but I have to say:

If you received an answer from members at your school, I'm not sure how it'd help to hear about strangers' situations. It's not like you can print this page off, present it during recruitment, and expect the chapters to override their decisions.

Mevara 04-27-2011 11:57 AM

Even if a chapter would take you doesn't mean that they will. If it comes down to the wire and if they have to decide between you and PNM with better GPA they might pick her.

You never know until you try.

Also what has changed to make you think that next time around you will get a bid?

P.S. With your user name and your Alpha Phi Omega chapter in the footer it might be easy to figure out who you are.

kddani 04-27-2011 01:34 PM

There are very few "valid" reasons for having a subpar GPA. (Absent the death of a parent or sibling or a very serious illness.)

If you don't have the grades, you don't have the grades. Is your semester already over? If not, get the heck off the internet and get your behind to a library so you can ace your finals and up your GPA.

If you couldn't make a decent GPA when you weren't in a sorority, why would a sorority think you'd increase your grades if you joined a sorority and had that many more demands on your time?

KSUViolet06 04-27-2011 03:05 PM

^^^This is what I fail to understand re: PNMs who are grade-risks.

It's like "I don't have the grades, but if you give me a bid, I'll DEFINITELY have the grades when I have a million other things to do on my plate."

My experience with grade-risks = you take the Grade-Risk Girl and she SWEARS she's going to make grades, and doesn't. So you can't initiate her (at least as far as Sigma goes.) Waste.

littlealexmarie 04-27-2011 03:39 PM

well thank you all for you kind answers. I am not stupid, I am not lazy. I graduated with 3.2 in high school. I had many bad things happen to me. Don't take this the wrong way but what does knowing who I am have anything to do with this. I am sorry If this post bothered people. I merely wanted to know if this ever happened to anyone and what they thought. Luckly I spoke to panhel at my school and after telling them my valid reason they said that I'm allowed to join a sorority since I did so well in high school and Thank you all for your help and humble opinions.

oh and I dropped out of formal because a girl told me I could NEVER get a bid from anyone. I basically left crying.

and I don't see how knowing who I am is bad. Sorry kinda confused about your intentions behind your P.S.

knight_shadow 04-27-2011 03:51 PM

That poster is telling you to be careful with what you reveal on the site. You have given a lot of identifying information, so if you say something bad, someone from your school may be able to put 2 and 2 together.

ETA: I don't see how your high school GPA would be a factor, considering you have a college GPA.

Panhellenic has absolutely no say on whether or not a sorority will offer you a bid. Allowing you to go through recruitment in spite of your poor GPA has nothing to do with getting a bid. Sororities are going to look at your college GPA, not your far-from-spectacular high school grades. Since you went through formal once already, they were looking at your high school GPA first time around and you still went bidless. Now you have the poor college record. What makes you think they will take someone they didn't want before with the added burden of a grade risk?

This is the reality of re-rushing. If you can't handle the truth here, you're probably not equipped to face it in person.

thanks for clarifying. I was so confused lol. Thanks :D

Fixed!!! :) :) :)

well given my situation, when I talked to panhel, they asked my high school gpa and said that proves I'm a good student. I mean I can totally wait and I don't mind waiting. I thought I might as well try. I don't lose anything from trying :)

I appreciate your harsh bluntness. As I stared in another post I don't mind waiting. No need to be rude. I'm not stupid. I know whats in front of me. I didn't get a bid because I dropped out. I'm sorry if you got offended by my question.

Thank you for explaining the situation so fully. I appreciate it :D

Are you planning to join an NPC sorority on top of being a member of APO? Not that it can happen, but if you can't balance the amount of work with what you have now, how will you balance it with another potential new member period?

Yes I am many people do it.

The balance of work has nothing to do with it.

The reason why I know I can do it is because my step-mom who had cancer passed away. Thats what made my gpa bad. I left my school to help my dad. The are more reasons that I do not wish to share.

I'm sorry I made this stupid thread. I was better off just speaking to the sororities on campus which was what I was doing.

I'm confused. You pledged APO, but also went through Formal Recruitment last semester, which you dropped out of? Then you transferred to a CC for this semester, and are planning to go back to your original university this fall?

Wouldn't your CC GPA from this semester be the one that counts?

yes

I left Bg for personal reasons. I had to deal with stuff at home.

Many people in AphiO are either in a sorority or a fraternity. It is allowed.

I know this. I never said it was a problem.

The problem is that your story doesn't make sense.

okay I'll explain it better for you.
I was having many things in my life happen that were out of MY control that hindered me from performing well in school. I left my university for a semester while things were claiming down. I pretty much fixed everything that was wrong that I couldn't fix before. Now I've finished this semester with A's. So since everything is better I'm going back to the university.

I hope that clarifys any confusion.

because of that girl I was so heart broken and dropped out before round 3. I really thought I wouldn't get a bid and I didn't stick around to try. My fear is that I do stick around and I get no bid at all.

At this point, it looks like I won't even go through formal this semester.

Please go through recruitment, you have nothing to lose. If you don't get a bid from anywhere, you at least won't be looking back saying "what if i just went through recruitment..."

If this is true, why would you ask this question:

You didn't "not get a bid." You dropped out. Your story still doesn't make sense. But good luck with all that.

BG recruitment isn't competitive. Just go through, be honest, and make sure all your CC credits will transfer. Just realize, transferred grades don't go towards your GPA (at least none of mine did). But it can be good to prove you did get all A's the previous semester.

If a sorority member told her this during recruitment and it made her drop out, it sounds like she didn't know any better. The sister saying this was in the wrong (can't speak for the other chapters).

Thank you very much. :) I am very much proud of my A's. I pretty much proved to myself that I could do it :D :D

I don't understand why some people felt the need to be rude to me but its whatever. Life goes on. :)

I'm not being rude. I honestly wasn't understanding the entire situation.

Good luck to the OP. Being a member of two organizations is a lot of work.
