Question about Loyally voulumes I&II

I am a Delta member of Gamma Eta at the University of Memphis. I'm the Guard, and I am trying to locate volumes I&II because I'm interested in our Ritual history and Gamma Eta history as well.

If anyone can locate these or has these, scan and make PDFs of some parts and email me, I would be appreciative. I know they're hard to locate and not all chapters have all three volumes (we only have the third), and that they go for hundreds of dollars when they show up on eBay, but I am hopeful to find or borrow them.

Uh oh.

Of course you are.

sillydarla 04-19-2011 05:51 PM

Really? EO no longer sells these books. And of course I am, I know it must take severe boredom to respond to a thread you have no authority to respond on the topic.

Let's just be Panhellenic and Interfraternal.

ADPis who can help should respond.

carnation 04-19-2011 05:54 PM

Oh, hooooonnneychiillle........:D

You know what you did.

No one thread should have so much failure.

Is something wrong? Because I last time I checked, I was just reaching out with a question. I didn't expect any Greek to be rude and reply out of lack of concern. Maybe I give too many the benefit of the doubt.

Lemme try to help.

#1: This is an open discussion board. Everyone has the "authority" to post in any thread.

#2: You're a random asking people to scan and email ritual information to you. You don't think that's a bit suspect?

AZTheta 04-19-2011 06:51 PM

Here's some more help:

it's illegal to do what you're asking (scan and pdf copyrighted material without written consent from the publisher).

Let me see, I posted under Alpha Delta Pi. Why should a TKE respond? True everyone has the ability to respond; however, just because someone says something on a subject, it doesn't mean they have factual knowledge on the subject which in turn makes them an authority on the subject.

Also, these are published books. They are NOT the ritual books of my sorority.

I could pay $185 for them on abebooks.com, but I thought I'd cover all bases first.

I could ask EO to fax me the pages I need, so no it's not illegal to do this or ask this. There is permission.

Uh huh. So, it's illegal to ask people to copy/scan/send you sections without getting written permission from the publisher.

So, you're asking people to rip off the author(s) by illegally copying sections and sending them to you. That's what you mean by "cover all bases"?

Fork out the $. Do the right thing.

As a published author, I am tired of people copying my materials and passing them around for free. It's NOT okay. It's stealing.

Double posting: then ask EO.

End of discussion.

ETA: Honeychile, where are you? Time to bring out Honey Badger.

LOL @ this entire thread

sillydarla 04-19-2011 07:57 PM

Just being honest: I never thought people could be this rude. However, it is the Internet.

If I were a recipient of one of these books from a closed chapter, I would NEVER sell them to begin with. Secondly, if a sister or a chapter needed them, I would simply donate/give them to those people who needed them.

It's not a matter of the technical issues, it's the being kind and civil that gets me.

knight_shadow 04-19-2011 08:00 PM

It's always acceptable to ask random people on the internet for sorority-specific documents.

As a matter of fact, I'm an ADPi as well. When you get them scanned, email them to me!

(See how easy that was? THAT'S why people are "being so rude")

FSUZeta 04-19-2011 08:19 PM

you really should go thru ADPi headquarters. that way, if you are who you say you are, they can verify that, and then you will get what you want thru them. if you are that woman in alabama who desparately wants to be an ADPi, then they won't give you the information you are seeking and ADPi's secrets will remain just that-secret.

Senusret I 04-19-2011 08:21 PM

abebooks.com will be your best bet if you want them quickly and can't borrow them from an alumna. And that way, at least they will be yours to have.

sillydarla 04-19-2011 08:52 PM

Thanks. End of my discussion. I just wish I could turn off the email alerts now.

Giving you the benefit of the doubt, and aside from the "can someone help me remember ritual info" questions that we sometimes see here --

If you look around in some recent ADPi threads, you'll see many posts about a woman who has been perping as an ADPi, going so far as to cover her facebook page with ADPi references and trying to pass herself off as an alumna with collegiate chapters and alumnae groups. It has become quite a major issue, and it has made lots of people on GC very sensitive to anyone claiming to be an ADPi who is looking for ritual-related material of any kind.

So in other words, your post landed in a backstory you may have known nothing about.

Agreed on the abebooks.

Also, I'm confused by this whole thing. Are these books like histories of the GLO? Sigma Kappa has some of those and they're also out of print AFAIK. Similarly purchasing them from abebooks means you're purchasing from used or rare book collectors/stores. No money goes to the authors at all. None of it is 'secret' as far as ritual goes, even if the intended audience was members. I could be wrong, I haven't read our books, but am I wrong in assuming they're similar?

These are the sort of thing that if they're not going to be reprinted, I would LOVE to see scanned into Google Books, or otherwise turned into ebooks for the historically inclined to read.

honeychile 04-19-2011 10:13 PM

Dear SillyDarla,

Since you want the opinion of an ADPi, you're entitled to one.

You say you're from DELTA CHAPTER and yet they have no copies of Loyally I & II? Alpha Delta Pi's oldest existing chapter with so many awards can't hold on to their copies of Loyally? I'm finding that just SO hard to believe. But, just in case the chapter is full of kleptomaniacs...

You got jumped on due to your use of the word "ritual". Alpha Delta Pis who listen to their New Member lessons are aware that there is no written ritual in one place.

Loyally has information on the sorority's history, but of course, no ritual. It comes up on ebay often, and also, as you said, at bookplaces that specialize in older books. You're going to pay roughly $100 for them. When a chapter closes, the closest chapter usually inherits the copies (I know my chapter has three sets), so that's when to start looking. I also know several alumnae :D who have the set; one of the local alumnae might be willing to let you see them.

Again, I will say that you made one of the biggest noob errors on GreekChat by using the word "ritual". Swear off using that word, and you'll get along fine.

I feel a little bad that I had some major work to do today, and didn't catch it your post earlier. We're all very sensitive about noobs who ask about ritual because there's a total nutjob named Jacki who is perping Alpha Delta Pi, and doesn't realize what a fool she's making of herself. Feel free to PM or email me if you'd like - but please don't try to insult my intelligence!

My bad. Doesn't really excuse her not listening to her New Member lessons, does it?

Aside: This isn't true. It would be illegal to publish it on the web. It would be illegal to distribute it. But it's not illegal to make one copy of a copyrighted book and give it to your sister.

sillydarla and I have had a chat, and no honey badgers need to be called out right now. Every message board has a hot button issue, and she made the mistake of hitting it as a noob. Let's try to get along now, okay?

FWIW- I have a personal copy of volume II, but there is no way in heck I will ever be parting with it. Every charter member of my chapter received it as a gift at our first initiation. It is signed by the then grand/ international president. (Can't remember which year the titles all switched.) So if anyone needs me to look up something specific, I'd be happy to dig it out in my spare time. (Which might take awhile, but I'll get to it.)
