Delta Gamma at Bama

Link is from DG's website, giving information about their colonization process. It also includes a picture of the house they will be building and its location.

So exciting! And that house... there's no smiley for being SO jealous. It's gorgeous.

agzg 04-19-2011 01:07 PM

Beautiful, best of luck to them.

Titchou 04-19-2011 01:37 PM

We are soooooo excited!

KSUViolet06 04-19-2011 01:46 PM

The Greek world is buzzing about this even up here. It's like the Super Bowl of sorority colonizations. lol.

*thinks of our sorority NFL draft thread*
*laughs and snorts*

I think they could have a tent instead of that house and still do fine.

At Bama? Ha! Ha!

Must. stop. drooling.

carnation 04-19-2011 03:47 PM

Wooo! Gorgeous house, ladies. Best of luck!

GreekGirley 04-19-2011 03:53 PM

WAY impressive!! I looked online and saw that the DGs are going to participate in the first couple of rounds of rush this fall at Bama and then expect to be rushing out of their house by fall 2012. Best wishes to them.

Whoever above wrote that this will be like the NFL draft of sororities, you're right!

And whoever above wrote that they'd be fine without a house, you're wrong. Sorority life at Bama is incredibly competitive for both PNMs and the chapters. If a chapter tried to colonize without a house at Bama, they'd flop. BIG.

Uber impressive!

I was being facetious.

AGDAlum 04-19-2011 04:19 PM

How much is that house going to cost?
I tried to look up an average cost per square foot, but is a sorority/fraternity house considered "residential" or "commercial"?

victoriana 04-19-2011 04:24 PM

Sweet baby JESUS. That house is stunning. Best of luck, and I can't wait to hear all about it :)

AZTheta 04-19-2011 04:32 PM

I want to be the house mother.

Where is the application?

I can't even imagine what the house mother's quarters will look like. But I'm willing to try, and I have an impeccable resume and great qualifications, if I do say so myself. Hell, I'd do it for FREE just to call that address mine for a while.

Yes, I am using green font because yes, I am green with envy.

It's not commercial but it's not residential (in terms of 'family').

It's already cost 31 years of my life waiting for my chapter to come back. There is no price on that!

Just curious, Why would this be any different than Alpha Phi a few years ago?

The only difference is that Alpha Phi started with a house. They rented/rent the Sigma Delta Tau house, which is lovely (gorgeous wrought iron with a New Orleans feel to the house). I don't know if they have purchased the house from SDT or not.
Delta Gamma will not have an actual house from which to colonize. The house is scheduled to be completed for recruitment 2012.

Also UA's sorority row is actually being expanded. DG will be one of 4 sororities with new housing. The university is currently tearing down 3 old dorms, which will be replaced with a street extension and new housing for Delta Delta Delta, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Delta Pi and DG.

FSUZeta 04-20-2011 07:43 AM

anchoralumna, do you know how the sororities were chosen to build a new house?

I can't imagine the Bama Tri Delts not having their round house.

Titchou 04-20-2011 10:15 AM

Carnation: Well, they won't much longer!

FSUZeta: They were chosen by the UA BOT via application. I believe 5 applied for the 3 lots. DG was guaranteed one of them when they agreed to colonize.

There's another difference as well. DG is a much more "southern" sorority. Lots more legacies and a higher profile in traditionally southern sorority circles.

My thought exactly.

OleMissGlitter 04-20-2011 11:18 AM

Gorgeous house! I know DG will come on strong at Bama!

I can't imagine the Tri Delta house different either! I think Alabama is a really wonderful example of how a Greek system should exist! Successful expansions and property growth! Oh and I think AOII is doing some big renovations this summer!

FSUZeta 04-20-2011 01:07 PM

we all better be doing major renovations in order to keep up with that gorgeous delta gamma house!

That, and unlike Alpha Phi, it's a recolonization. Alumnae of a dormant chapter bring an additional level of devotion.

When Alpha Phi came to Alabama, it was a recolonization of our Beta Mu chapter that was present from 1932-1963. Also, I have learned that we purchased the Sigma Delta Tau house that we are currently housed in and plan to tear it down and rebuild a new, larger house in it's place. I am not sure of the timeline to have it finished but I'm sure it is within the next couple of years.

Low C Sharp 04-20-2011 01:28 PM

Oh, my mistake! I thought this was a brand-new Alpha Phi chapter.

what exciting news-can't wait to see the plans for the bama alpha phi house!

DTD Alum 04-20-2011 07:26 PM

Are there floorplans for the DG house? Or just exterior renderings? I am a total dork for fraternity/sorority floorplans...apparently my former chapter has just received the plans for their new house and I have been scrambling to get a PDF copy.

Agreed. I also wonder if Ole Miss DGs will go and help since Ole Miss doesn't have formal recruitment until the first week of October this year. Tuscaloosa is an easy drive from Oxford. (Of course the Miss State DGs are even closer to help!) Either way, they will have lots of Mississippi DGs to help!

Thanks APhi4Ever - I had heard they purchased the house, but didn't know for sure.
There are floor plans, but I'm not sure if they've been okayed yet for general distribution.;)

I do hope to see their shining faces! Along with collegiates from our chapters at UAB, Montevallo, Auburn, and Spring Hill!

Me too! A number of the Tennessee NPC chapters have published the floorplans for their soon-to-be houses on their web sites, and I wasted I don't know how many hours studying each one!

The plans for the expanded Theta house at Bama are sorta kinda visible on an easel behind an alum in an online picture, and I was even poring over that one to see whatever I could.

DTD Alum 04-21-2011 02:17 PM

Yeah, I am hoping we'll get to see the floorplans for even one of the new Alabama houses. Renderings are nice, but I love to see how residential building trends reflect themselves in GLO house design, as well as dormitory trends...for example, many new houses have suites instead of the traditional bedrooms and communal bathrooms, very interested to see if any of the Bama houses go that untraditional route since it is a school steeped in tradition. Also always get a kick out of seeing the differences between the larger fraternity houses and the larger sorority houses...basement party rooms and open space vs. arts and crafts area and more designated officer/meeting space, etc.

Titchou 04-21-2011 02:50 PM

DG will have traditional rooms with communal baths as well as a few private ones. And yes, chapter room, small group meeting space, crafts, recruitment storage, etc in the basement. There are lounges/TV rooms and study rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Usual stuff on main level - formal living room, casual room, TV room, dining, kitchen, HD suite.

what she said .. I'd love to see them as well .. could someone who has some please start one?

^^^me three! I'm most interested in what the house mother's / facility director's quarters look like.
