Game of Thrones

I know a couple of you have been eagerly awaiting this series, which premiered tonight on HBO. I am a HUGE fan of the "Song of Ice and Fire" series. I love fantasy books, and this GRRM is in my top three favorite fantasy authors (along with Tolkein and Feist). I don't have that channel (or any cable TV for that matter), so I haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet. I'm downloading it now though!

What do you think of it? What are you most excited for? What do you think they could have done better?

P.S. Jason Momoa is hot. I love him.

Drolefille 04-17-2011 11:06 PM

I'm a HUGE fan myself (I won't spoil anything I can help). It is EXCELLENT. And where they ended the pilot was perfect. There's a lot of eye candy for all interested parties.

I can't think of anything I would have done better at this point. They're giving some nice characterization all around, but Jaime's being given a fairer shake, you kind of like him AND hate him instead of just hating him.

victoriana 04-17-2011 11:17 PM

Don't worry, you couldn't spoil it for me, I've read the series multiple times. Only half an hour until my download finishes and I'm done studying for finals....This describes how I feel about GoT:

*laugh* I don't want to spoil anyone in the thread though. The pilot ends with "The things I do for love." It's perfect.

And my desire to lick Jon Snow or Khal Drogo is completely incidental.

I just watched it... it was really good! I thought they did a great job with casting. I've been following it since it started, so it's nice to see everything come together on screen.

ZetaGirl22 04-19-2011 12:54 AM

AWESOME! I've not read the series but one of my good friends is a HUGE fan and tried to get me and DH into it for a long time. I never read any, DH started reading "A Game of Thrones" but he couldn't get into it. He liked the story, but not the writing (his words). He is such a literary elitist LOL. He would rather be reading Don DeLillo or Phillip Roth anyway.

But I digress. The first episode was amazing and I can't wait for more. Gonna have to get my dad to watch, he's a big fan of Sean Bean. I swear HBO just keeps making me NOT cancel it. We were going to cancel it after the Sopranos ended to save some money, but then True Blood started. Then Boardwalk Empire, and now this. We'll never be able to get rid of it LOL.

ASUADPi 04-19-2011 07:57 PM

I haven't read the books but I really enjoyed the first episode. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

victoriana 04-19-2011 09:27 PM

I would really recommend reading the books at some point. Although the show is staying very true to the book, it still gives you a deeper understanding of the characters and their relationships, which can be sometimes hard to understand on screen.

Also, good news! GoT has already been renewed for a second season!

Woot GoT:CoK! (That sounds dirty.)

victoriana 04-19-2011 10:02 PM

It's ironic! There is also talk about splitting SoS into two seasons rather than trying to fit it all in one.

victoriana 05-11-2011 12:57 AM

Has anyone else been watching this? I LOVE it. I'm so glad they're doing the books justice. So far, my favorite characters are Tyrion, Dany, and Jon Snow. I actually never caught on to Jon Snow in the books, but the actor is portraying him in such a riveting way. I can't wait to see more!!

Drolefille 05-11-2011 01:32 AM

I've always loved Jon and Tyrion. Dany's ok, but she doesn't hold my interest. I missed the most recent episode (but can't be spoiled so I'm not worried and that's what On Demand is for) but man I love this show!

Love the gifs!! And episode four was great. Lots of Jon Snow, which is good for the both of us ;)

I'm loving this show.
I like the youngest Stark daughter. She is too adorable.
I like the "Kaleesi" (although I cannot remember the real characters name for the life of me). Love how she smacked down her brother last night (I finished watching it last night). That was pretty great.

I like the "Khaleesi" (although I cannot remember the real characters name for the life of me). Daenerys aka Dany

^^ Fixed it

They say in the books that when a Targaryen is born the gods flip a coin and one side is a great leader but the other is bugfark nuts. I'm paraphrasing...

One reviewer was like "he slapped him a few more times than in the book, but it wasn't enough because Joff was still breathing."

I've never read this series, but my husband is a huge fan, so I have my own expert at home to answer questions as they come up. I am just creeped out by the Lanisters. Ewwww.... I can't even stand to look at the actor playing their son. The actress playing Dany irritates me, and it doesn't help that her hair looks like it was ripped off of a life sized Barbie doll. The story is great, though. It even made me buy the book, which is totally not my genre.

It is a very non-genre genre book. The fantastical elements are set on low and gradually increase over time. The politics and espionage and drama are all on high throughout. They're pretty awesome, and the 5th book is FINALLY coming out this summer!

I literally jumped up and down when I read about that on GRRM's blog. IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME. I'm excited to read about Dany and Tyrion... but without giving anything away, I won't say more.

That's what my husband said. I don't usually like to read what he likes to read and vice versa. We share a Kindle account on our iPhones and read about 20% of the same books. I do like to jump on a series right before the last book comes out, though! I hate to wait.

The series isn't close to ending. The author has at least two more books planned in the series, although books 6 and 7 won't be out any time soon, I'm guessing.

BetteDavisEyes 05-11-2011 09:29 PM

Love the show & Jon Snow. He's just adorable. Also really like the youngest Stark daughter. She makes me smile. Can't stand any of the Lannisters. Creepy beyond belief.

I have only watched the show but ordered the books through Amazon so I'm waiting for them to arrive. Any day now...

Oh well, he's verbose enough that even though I read fast, I may be able to drag them out until then! ;)

Yes!! This is the first time I get to watch it live. I'm at my parents and they have HBO. Enjoy those books!! You won't be able to put them down.

joliebelle 05-15-2011 10:40 PM

This last episode was filled with a lot of wtf. Needed more Khal Drogo, imo ;)

BetteDavisEyes 05-16-2011 12:04 AM

Totally random but I love the opening music. Lol!

Watching the episode now...

victoriana 05-16-2011 02:11 AM

Renly and Loras weren't gay in the books. I'm referring to the chest shaving scene and the awkwardly slurpy blowjob. I'm surprised GRRM let them do that.

Drolefille 05-16-2011 07:48 PM

^^ They are actually gay in the books. We never get either of their points of view (nor Renly's later wife IIRC), and it's never outright spoken, but just hinted at with snide comments about Renly's lack of children/surprise that he's managed to do anything with a wife. I suspect that Renly's Rainbow Guard was also a not so subtle hint. GRRM basically just gave them the go ahead to make it blatant and official rather than hinted at.

Loras is similar, he's quite a good knight, but young and utterly devoted to Renly when we see him later. He's just mostly sneered at for being young, although the suspicions/knowledge of his orientation might have had an effect.

victoriana 05-16-2011 08:34 PM

^^ REALLY? I never picked up on that. Thanks for pointing it out, I'll have to go back and pay more attention. :)

Hehe no worries, like I said it's entirely in subtext. I don't recall anyone saying anything specific and it can all be taken as insulting Renly for being unserious, childlike, foppish, immature, and Loras mostly for being immature. But it's totally there. ;)

WTF was that woman doing breastfeeding that kid who had to be at least 7?!?:eek::eek:

She's a few towers short of a castle.

If you get what I mean.

I get you. Jeezuz. Mike & I saw that scene & as de-sensitized as we are, that one still surprised me. Ewwww!

Lysa takes the "family" out of the Tully motto a bit seriously.

"Family, Duty, Honor" IIRC.

Poor Cat, nothing's going quite right...

I'm actually an episode behind right now, but having reread the books when they started I love knowing what's going on anyway :p

Good lord, that was disgusting. I had to look away. The fact that the kid's lips were wet just did me in. *barf*
