Is GC a Thing of the Past?

Ok, so I'm obviously being over-dramatic, but I've noticed a huge drop off in traffic/posts probably going back six months or maybe even a year...

Have those of us who have "grown up" on GC now gotten too busy with family/work/real life to visit as often?

Have people finally started reading the FAQs and (besides trolls) stopped creating threads for basic info?

Even the threads that have nothing to do with Greek life have died down a ton....and I've started to think of the "What do you feel like saying" thread as GC's own Facebook news feed.

I used to not be able to keep up with GC on the Droid...now I come and there are 5 posts in 4 hours....

Probably this

sigmadiva 03-28-2011 01:37 PM

I noticed the traffic slow down over a year ago in the NPHC forums. When I first joined GC all 9 forums had active threads throughout the day. Then it trickled down to just the DST forum, and now that is even kinda dead.

I think there are two reasons:

The first: there are just so many other social web sites that people can use to communicate.

Second: I feel that some regular posters have made it near impossible to come here and enjoy a casual chat in any forum. I mean, there are regular posters here who will take what someone says and split hairs on just one word, phrase, or meaning. In the early years of GC you did not have to worry about beaing soooooo politically correct. Now you do. :(

lovespink88 03-28-2011 01:37 PM

My GC usage has dropped dramatically ever since I started my first full time job, which was nearly 8 months ago. I'm usually too busy to even take a peak in during work, and by the time I get home around 7:30-8, the last thing I want to do is get back on a computer. (My exception today is that I'm off!)

I will check in on the weekend, but I know the weekends are very slow, and by that time any new fun threads that have taken off (be it troll or something else) have already made it to like page 5+, so I feel like it's too late for me to jump in.

But that's just me.

cheerfulgreek 03-28-2011 01:41 PM

I think with Daemon being gone, that's part of it. Of course not all of it, but part of it. His threads got far more traffic than the others that I've seen.

DrPhil 03-28-2011 01:44 PM

1. People are using facebook. While some people are truly too busy with "life," a lot of people have access to the Internet throughout the day and simply aren't coming to GC.
2. People come to GC to read the new posts. They don't need to register or logon to do that.
3. You all have gotten snarkiererererer with your old age. People can't create threads or type anything without you all climbing up their asses. How dare thee, I judge thee.

KSUViolet06 03-28-2011 01:44 PM

I do think that ks is right though. We used to be the "kids" of GC and now we're working, getting married, having kids, starting grad/med/etc. school or advancing in our careers and we don't have time like we used to. I know that during the week, my time is pretty limited. The only reason I'm on at 2pm on a Monday is because of Spring Break at work (in a school.)

Also, the future PNMs are just now starting to get their college acceptances, so they/their heli-parents haven't quite gotten around to us yet. Don't worry, they're coming. Once May or so hits, I feel like the crazy starts to come out of the woodwork with 50 million questions. Then August hits and then it's just FULL ON CRAZY til November.

I'm a little sad because come August, I'll be back in school and crazy season will just be kicking off. Who will I rely on to QFP the fun while I'm in class til 10 every night? :(

My recollection of the early years of GC differs completely. LOL.

But, I think this is the equivalent of a Greekchat chapter meeting. I encourage people to be very honest and detailed so that we can nip all of these regular posters in the bud. Let them know who they are so that they can be punished to the fullest extent of the Greekchat.

Each succeeding class of kids going to college is more computer savvy, so yes, I'd hope this.

Don't forget racist. Especially against Latinos. Ship 'em back to Mexico where they all came from. Cuban, Mexican...same difference.

Benzgirl 03-28-2011 02:08 PM

Guilty *raises hand*. I refrained from posting while traveling on business because I didn't want GC all over my company "box". I recently purchased a Net Pad, so I'll be able to access it when I'm on the road.

AF, some of us never grow up.

I'm fixing the problem.

This thread has gotten more posts than tje rest of GC would have the rest of the day if it weren't for that moronic DZ providing us with some afternoon refreshments.

See? Helping.

WTF Is DemonSeed, anyway?

NinjaPoodle 03-28-2011 02:34 PM

I still check just about everyday or two because of the spam but I agree with you guys in that folks move on with life (and the other posted reasons). I've been on since 01' and have seen the waves of change. I think GC is still relevant though because we've posted/created some great threads that are not only informational but funny as he**. I've seen threads quoted on other websites, blogs etc. Aside from the spammers, GC still has a lot of new members signing up everyday. We even have national officers from orgs checking it out.
Personally, I love GC because of the huge community it is. It's not regulated to JUST NPHC or locals, etc. I also like that GC is moderated. We've all seen some other fraternity/sorority chat sites come and go due to SPAM and unruly posts.

I also think the simple design has helped GC stick around. GC is easy to navigate, the colors are easy on the eyes and the ads are at a minimum. I think John has done very well with this site that wasn't even generating any $$ during the early years.

As a former lurker turned poster. I would agree with this. Though I have thick skin and really could care less about being right on the internet so I still keep posting on topics that interest me.

I think this is a big one, at least it is for me. More & more people dont want to post/"get involved" if you will for that reason. While admittedly the occasional troll/trainwreck/spoof threads are fun to read, GC is not half as fun anymore as it was when I joined in 2003.

I also think others that were regulars in the past are too busy with life to come here & post regularly anymore. It is also possible they have become regular lurkers rather than posters because of the above reasons. Just my two cents.

DrPhil 03-28-2011 03:07 PM

Also:

I think GC is just like other message boards where a lot of the people who typed to each other also knew each other in real life or from other networking sites. That reduces the smartass potential and misunderstandings/misinterpretations. 99% of the people who I know in real life don't post here anymore.

This thread is starting to read like a cyberbullying commercial. LOL.

AlphaFrog 03-28-2011 03:17 PM

If the e-cops come get me for cyberbullying, I need someone assigned to retrieve my username from the iJail and someone else assigned to bring in my defense team. MysticCat, team leader.

twinkle555 03-28-2011 03:29 PM

I have noticed this as well, as I havent been posting as much the past few months either. I have 2 jobs, plus wedding planning so time is definitely limited.

AnchorAlumna 03-28-2011 03:29 PM

Agree on the snarkiness.

But....it's spring break time, plus a lot of the HS seniors aren't that worried yet about rush/recruitment.

It's always slow this time of year.

agzg 03-28-2011 03:34 PM

Really? People really think the snarkiness is new or somehow worse than it used to be?

This is boggling my mind.

Glad to see AlphaFrog started the first "What's happened to our beloved GreekChat" thread of 2011 - we have about 2 more to go - my guess is we'll have at least one in August.

Shellfish 03-28-2011 03:50 PM

Maybe the long-term relationship among Greekchat posters has mellowed into a comfortable silence.

agzg 03-28-2011 04:14 PM

There have always (OK, since April 2004) been "meanies" and there have always been people who don't post because of meanies.

DrPhil 03-28-2011 04:16 PM

In other words, this is another example of "back in the olden days when I was a pledge, we never did that...and we walked hundreds of miles barefoot in the freezing rain for our letters. My, how things have changed."

agzg 03-28-2011 04:20 PM

Meanwhile, you're really slacking in the music party department today. Don't you start a music party then not see it through.

DrPhil 03-28-2011 04:23 PM

Yeah I had the nerve to logoff and do other stuff.

I'm back and better than ever. :p

Um, DrPhil... are you trying to turn over a new leaf...?

Life (work and baby and hubby) and just a general decline in interest for me. I might check once or twice a day, but rarely post. Also, a lot of the people I had friendships with on GC don't post here anymore - I tend to keep in touch with them on Facebook instead. My involvement with Greek Life and my sorority are also slim to none. I am still standards adviser for my chapter, but haven't had to do anything with that in quite awhile (which is a GOOD thing).
