Asians in the Library...

http://hypervocal.com/culture/2011/c...-star-is-born/

DrPhil 03-16-2011 12:19 AM

My favorite part is "I don't mean against any of my friends, I mean it towards random people who I don't know...."

That's the same thing as "some of my bestfriends are (insert race/ethnicity/culture)."

This young lady looks dumb and sounds dumb. She prefaced her dumb with "I'm not the most politically correct person." That's admission of stupidity which means you need to shut up.

And her friends are dumb as hell if they don't clown the hell out of her. Her Asian friends are idiots if they remain friends with her.

excelblue 03-16-2011 01:05 AM

Worst part is how she completely botched up her apology video by slipping in an off-handed racist remark: "white people manners."

Elephant Walk 03-16-2011 03:39 AM

Unnecessary.

I already have that posted on my facebook lol. I just don't know how some people can be so shallow... SMH.
A few parts that are true:
1. We do talk loud because that's just how our language is.
2. If we want to talk shit about people around us, we will use our language (for most part :P )
3. We do take our shoes off when we walk in the house.

There are some other good videos out there... Hopefully this girl get mocked for a while....

I hear you but intragroup assessments are different than intergroup assessments. The observations that the many ethnicities and cultures of "Asians" can make of themselves and each other are distinct from nonAsians sitting around and making observations for the purpose of mocking and labeling.

My wife tells me all the time I talk really loud on the phone when talking to my mom (she's caucasian), even though I don't really notice. You have no idea how many times I get yelled at for wearing shoes in the house...crazy Asian rules.

I know. That was more like a "if you mock me and I will mock you back" mentality. I just hope this can all go away. Unnecessary drama. (hell, by posting this I'm spreading the drama also :p )

The racism and resentment is becoming a big deal at UCLA, and elsewhere in the UC system, Cal State system, and among aspiring California college students in general. A lot of caucasians complain that they can't get into the UC schools because they're filled with asian students from all over the U.S. (many first generation Americans). The people I know who went to UCLA (and this was 10 years ago) used to call it University of Caucasians Lost in Asians. California did away with affirmative action in public school admissions 10-12 years ago, but I know a lot of people who think it should be reinstated so that more white people can get in.

Such folks need to blame someone, right? Anyone who actually believes that does not deserve a place at a UC.

Yep. It's primarily the white folks that wanted to do away with affirmative action admissions. They got what they wanted.

So you are in favor of banning someone who believes a certain way from a public place?

LatinaAlumna 03-18-2011 11:09 AM

I'm in favor of banning stupid people from UC.

LatinaAlumna 03-18-2011 11:11 AM

...and GC, for that matter. :D

My friend's younger brother who is currently a student at UCLA says this video has turned the campus into a war zone. It brought all of the racial tension on campus to a head.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, as long as people keep their cool and avoid violence.

I was in LA a couple weeks ago. People still call it that.

@the bolded... Those people do know that affirmative action still wouldn't be for them, right? They do realize it is for groups who have been discriminated against historically, not just whichever group has lower numbers on campus.

AnchorAlum 03-20-2011 05:48 PM

Watching that video from a perspective of one who lives LIKE 3000+ miles away reminds me of some spoof.

Did this person actually post this as a serious message? How did SHE get into UCLA? From where I sit, UCLA has always seemed like a very prestigious top tier university, and MAYBE, just MAYBE, that's why there are large numbers of Asians, who are high achievers, who attend the school. Is this girl for real? Is there a building on campus named for a family member?

I'm embarassed for her.

oclady21 03-20-2011 06:22 PM

when i was applying to colleges in 1999 for the 2000 school year, the only people they were really accepted into UCLA were those with above a 4.0. the kids also had to be highly involved at their high school. the people who applied had to have a stacked resume, but maybe today the standards aren't the same???

anyways, i just wanted to make a post because the girl that made the video resigned being a student at UCLA. there was such a huge backlash against her and she probably felt uncomfortable and gave up. there was a huge article about her in the orange county register.

she probably NEVER imagined the amount of press it would receive.

AnchorAlum 03-20-2011 11:31 PM

Well.....the REALLY important question we are all dying to ask is....was she in a sorority?

Source is my friend's brother, who is in a fraternity at UCLA and knows the girl. But that's still just hearsay, which is why I said "supposedly."

Below is Wallace’s full letter:

In an attempt to produce a humorous YouTube video, I have offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture. I am truly sorry for the hurtful words I said and the pain it caused to anyone who watched the video. Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words. I could write apology letters all day and night, but I know they wouldn’t erase the video from your memory, nor would they act to reverse my inappropriate action.
I made a mistake. My mistake, however, has lead to the harassment of my family, the publishing of my personal information, death threats, and being ostracized from an entire community. Accordingly, for personal safety reasons, I have chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA.

Alexandra Wallace

DrPhil 03-21-2011 12:06 PM

People shouldn't be threatening her life and releasing her personal information. That's dumb.

But, she's definitely playing the unknowing victim here. Her dumbass knew that she was making an offensive (or potentially offensive) videotape. She didn't release that for comedic value. She released that because she thought she was the voice of the oppressed white folks who are tired of those "model minority" Asians taking over the world.

There's nothing accidental about creating a web video. I do not believe that she is sorry.

Dumb question. Why aren't Asian students who live in, say, Pennsylvania going to Pitt or Bucknell or Penn instead of going all the way out to UCLA? If that's what you mean.

Anyone who talks on their cell in the library regardless of race, gender or anything else should get tossed out.

I'm totally with you on the talking on the cell phone in the library. Last week I was at my local public library picking up a book at the main desk. A woman was talking on her phone inside one of the glassed in "quiet" rooms with the door open at least 100 feet away from that desk, and we all got the full blast of her "private" conversation. I didn't notice what race she was. It was just damn annoying. We need to reinstate phone booths just so annoying people have somewhere to go with their cell phones.

I was fearing that when I saw all of the pink and blue in the background. If she is, I'm sure that there will something mentioned in the Anchora.

Sometimes you've gotta fight fire with fire (i.e. meet rude behavior with more rude behavior) - I might have barked, "WOULD YOU CLOSE THE DOOR" loudly as I was slamming the door closed...ha ha ha ha!!!

Oh, I'm just as sure there WON'T be any mention of it. I saw the pink and blue and thought the same thing. Plus, she IS blonde. :o

I decided to creep on the UCLA DG's Facebook page... didn't see any pictures with her in it.

PeppyGPhiB 03-25-2011 08:39 PM

There are lots of parodies on YouTube by now, but I like this music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWHWWSnxnP8

trojanpride 04-05-2011 06:49 PM

A UCLA friend (I have one! ;)) said that during finals week there were students on purpose being loud and obnoxious in the library as backlash to all this. Her personal info was found on the UCLA directory and sent all over the internet, she was being sent death threats, etc. and that's why she left UCLA.

I don't wish that kind of terrible social situation on anyone, but she did bring it upon herself. I doubt she apologized because she suddenly sees Asian students as equals or deserving to go to UCLA, she apologized because she was getting so much heat.

This has brought up some discussion on the other side of LA. I don't feel like there's a lot of racial tension at USC quite as much but maybe because I'm white I don't see it. I hope that things are quieting over at UCLA now too.

Backlash to what? Backlash to a girl who DOESN'T EVEN ATTEND UCLA ANYMORE? What she said was ignorant but two dumbs don't make a smart.

It all happened (video posting, backlash) just prior to and during finals week at UCLA.
