I haven't had a working computer at home for the past few days, and I'm at the office right now to post this.

My beautiful boy, my Bichon Frise named Buffy, died on Friday. He had been just not up to par for months, and I had him at the vet and at specialists. Just last Tuesday, I found out that he had a massive liver tumor which had metastasized into his lungs and lymph glands. I made the terrible appointment for Friday, but Buffy was gasping on Friday morning, so I took him in a little early. He was in his stroller, in "that back room" with me when the vet went to get things ready. Buffy & I looked at each other with love, then he put his paw on my hand and died.

It was on his terms, no needles, no medication. I know you're thinking, "Buffy? Stroller? How weird is that?" but Buffy (AKC Mr. Buff) had been the stud for a breeder before my mother got him, and his vet personally thought he was the perfect breed standard, and since we went to Bichon Bashes, we'd put him in that to get him to the staging area. Thank heavens we did - he walked very little in the last week. Buffy was all guy, and to be honest, a little conceited, but very loving.

I've had this vision of Buffy galloping like a puppy, all four paws in the air, right into my mama's arms, and my daddy saying, "Who the heck is that?!" Thank you all for your kind words - God bless us all.

PS: Forgot to add - we used to refer to him as our Alpha Delta Paw Sweetheart!

Dear Honey,

these words have brought me comfort, and I hope they do the same for you. The author was a British poet. I don't have the entire poem, just this section.

"..trouble free you sleep
(and dream, perhaps, of me),
We could not, if we would,
forget each other.

When, in turn, the dark
Shall glaze my eyes, your joyous bark
Will greet me, echoing in the sky.
Till then, dear loving heart, goodbye."

Because you mentioned this, I feel that I could share this "dream" I had shortly after the passing of my previous pug.

I had this dream, that I was standing at the top of our basement steps looking down, and there was Chopper (my little black pug). And he talked. He told me that he was fine and that everything okay and that he was in heaven with Mark and not to worry and to tell my dad not to feel bad and not to worry, that he was happy and he was in Heaven with Mark.

First, Mark is my dad's best friend who lifted weights at our house for years growing up. The August before Chopper died, Mark had a heart attack while driving home from work and passed away. Mark and Chopper were buddies. I don't think that dog loved me as much as he loved Mark. And as far as telling my dad it was okay, Chopper was my dad's shadow, and Chopper was getting old and deaf...and one day my dad went to move the truck, not knowing that Chopper was resting under it to cool off in the shade.

I believe that Chopper really was there in my dream and wanted to let me know it's okay, and maybe your vision of your beautiful Buffy is his way of letting you know that he is doing great, and that he'll be there waiting when you get there :)

Really needing that Like button for this and so many other posts! Loving the poem, the dream, and the comments. He would be so pleased.

The photo I posted was actually on a Bichon Frise calendar in 2007 - Buffy was Mr. December (after photoshopped to a Christmas theme). I'd love to post the link for a slide show that a friend made for me on facebook, but I'm not sure how to do it. It's under Sally Thompson's videos, if that helps, and yes, it shows some of his bad days (plus my mom & his groomer).

Got it! Buffy's Slide Show

"All this over a DOG?"--that's what people say. But when I lost my Clyde it tore such a huge hole right out of the heart of me... Anyone who's ever truly loved an animal knows that hole, that horrible dead hurt in the middle of you.

And this made me cry:

Honey- I'm so sorry to hear about Buffy. I know how much he meant to you and your mom. At least you knew it was coming and were able to say goodbye. Seems like a lot of big changes for you over the past year or two, so I'm sending positive vibes for a good next chapter!

UPDATE

I know that this thread is almost two years old, but there's an update. Buffy had a bout of kennel cough in the months prior to his death, and afterwards, it was hard to get him to eat. The one thing he would eat was the dehydrated chicken strips from Waggin' Train.

The treats were made in China, and one of the hundreds of stories about the treat here. While preparing my house in PA for sale last week, I found a package of the treats, read the Made In China label, sat down, and cried. I brought them back to have them analyzed by a friend of ours who works in a lab. I honestly think that someone has to start a class action suit, and possibly start of drive to involve the FDA in pet food, and it just may be me. When we do get another bichon, s/he will be fed by the food I make until the laws change. I have the dehydrator and the recipes, too.

Buffy will not have died in vain!

DO NOT BUY CHICKEN, DUCK, or SWEET POTATO TREATS MADE IN CHINA!
Known brands that are made in China include (but are not limited to):

Waggin Train
Milo's Kitchen
Canyon Creek
Dingo
Vitalife Plus
Nature's Deli
Kingdom Pets
Smoke House
and sadly, AKC.

And if anyone knows of anyone who has lost a pet or whose pet became seriously ill after eating these, please, please contact me.

badgeguy 01-08-2013 04:24 PM

This is exactly why something's should never be made overseas!!

FYI, If anyone wants AMERICAN dog treats I have a friend who has started a new company selling all natural dog treats. Website is http://www.truenaturedogtreats.com

I hope some sort of suit is made against companies that are jeopardizing our health and that of our pets!!
