Dress my PNM
I have a question regarding shoes. My daughter will be attending a Big 12 school in the fall. She has a navy blue dress paired with yellow shoes. I'm concerned about the color combination. Since this is Tri Delta's colors should we change the shoe color?
The dress. The picture looks black, but it's actually navy blue and the bow lays more flat and on top of itself. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y63.../navydress.jpg The yellow shoes http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y63...maddengirl.jpg |

What round is she planning on wearing this to? Preference? Worry about her wearing one particular groups colors IF she is invited back to their preference round. I bet she changes her mind sometime within the next 8-9 months. I bet she changes it more than once. |
Where is that dress from? I like the yellow and navy together but it really depends on your school...
|
Day three or possibly pref night. I thought red shoes might be better, but she really loves the yellow.
This dress is from a small boutique in the small town down the road from us. |

As an aside though my chapter wears red dresses for pref and I wore a red dress to pref as a PNM. I knew it was A color for two of the organizations on campus but had no idea that one of the chapters I was preffing wore red. It turns out, they DID read too much into it and think I had done it on purpose. I suppose in that case it worked in my favor, but they had given me the benefit of the doubt. It could just as easily been perceived as presumptuous. |
Also, she could easily change sizes - and fashion styles can change - in those 8-9 months. If it's a nice dress she can wear to other things, go for it. But don't commit to it as THE pref dress til much closer.
Also VVV what she said. |
Sheesh ..... and I thought the questions directly from pnms had become excessive.
I think your daughter should wear what she wants to wear to her recruitment. |
There are too many bows in this outfit for my taste. I'd go with the dress and a shoe that does not have an embellishment...then again, I only opened the thread because of the title. :D
|
The yellow shoes with the little flowers make me go ewww. But I'm not the type of woman who obsesses over shoes and handbags. Most of my shoes are black, and I don't even carry a handbag unless I'm going to a formal event and have to carry an evening bag. I'd pair navy shoes with the navy dress. But that's just me.
|
It is a lovely dress, and ehh, even if she doesn't end up wearing it during recruitment, should she join a sorority, there are formals and other events that she can wear it to.
|
I like the dress, but NOT with the yellow shoes - and not because it's Tri Delta's (or Theta Phi Alpha's or Alpha Xi Delta's) colors.
Personally, I think a print similar to these would be cute. |
Thank you 33girl for the picture. That's a really cute shoe!
I think we'll keep our eye out for a different shoe without an embellishment. Thank you everyone for the feed back. |
33 brings up a comment I'd like to share. Blue and yellow isn't exactly the most unusual color combination in the world. It's not like wearing the very vivid and specific red and green of A Chi O or pink and green of DZ.
But yeah, it's time to chillax on the the recruitment stuff. There are MILES to go before you sleep and it's way too early to be getting yourself all riled up over day 3/4 outfit choices. In the next couple months you can start thinking (NOT worrying) about recommendations, but for now, she needs to be thinking (NOT worrying) about graduating, prom, whether or not to be on the track team this spring, etc. Grades and fun should be her obsessions right now. Not what to wear for 3 hours in 7 months. It's just clothes, after all. And those shoes, 33, are fantastic, and oh so practical. |
If I might say, we aren't out shopping for recruitment clothing. She picked this dress for a dance she has coming up and said she could wear it for recruitment as well. I agreed, as I think it's a lovely dress, but I do have concerns about the shoes. We live in a rural area and our clothing and shoes options are limited, so when we are in the big city I certainly want to keep my eye out for a shoe that might be more appropriate. I do have a budget and finding the right shoe in the right price does take time.
I can assure you her priorities right now are on all her senior year activities. We shopped for another dress at the same time we found this dress for a banquet she has coming up and we still have a prom dress to find. She has a list of everything she needs in the next six months and first an foremost on that list is her senior year needs. Next is college, which includes recruitment. We know what she needs and as we come across items that are appropriate and budget friendly, then we'll pick it up and mark it off. |
the dress is darling and would make a great pref. dress for the schools i am familiar with-don't know your daughters intended school, so can't be specific.
the shoes would also work, but might be better for a different round. of course, as we often tell pnms, you should wear something that flatters you and that makes you feel confident and good about yourself. the shoes would not be a "fail" with the dress. if your daughter knows anyone in a sorority(or that was in a sorority) at the college she will be attending, they would be the best resource for appropriate recruitment outfits. 33, absolutely adore those shoes! |
I love the dress, but I think the shoes are a little too casual and don't really go with it. Something about wooden heels and cocktail dresses just doesn't add up to me. I'd personally go for something a little bit more formal like:
http://www.stevemadden.com/Item.aspx...27_282-136_394 http://www.stevemadden.com/Item.aspx...27_282-136_394 http://www.stevemadden.com/Item.aspx...27_282-136_394 http://www.stevemadden.com/Item.aspx...27_282-136_394 Something with a little more visual interest but not frilly. (Obviously they don't need to be expensive, I'm a firm believer in DSW and Payless, but just some ideas.) I think it's best to either pick a color combination that doesn't line up with any of the sororities on campus or make sure you have a backup for pref. I think in some cases it can get taken the wrong way. I know personally I wouldn't discount a girl who showed up wearing blue & blue with a key necklace, but it would definitely catch my attention. But like everyone has said, it's not something you need to worry about right now. It's nice to think ahead though! :) |

As a mom of two girls living in rural America, I totally relate to everything you are saying here. During my daughters' senior years, we often bought dresses for a senior event that might double for college events (esp rush). People who don't live far away from a major city really don't understand this longterm thinking. Add on the fact that you might be a working mom and you really have more reason to plan ahead. Even with online shopping options, many people in small towns do it this way. |

Like I said, I'm just curious. |
I had the same thought. I highly doubt it. That dress is very much navy, not tri-delta blue.
|
^^From a DDD, it's too dark to be Delta blue. Also yellow is pretty different than gold in my mind. I'm personally a big fan of the navy/yellow combination, but it's pretty different from a gold/cerulean combination.
|
Thank you to those that have posted pictures and made suggestions. I appreciate all the comments as well.
|
Also a 3D here, who would not have thought that dress was worn to send a message if I saw it on a PNM.
It's a cute dress and I hope she has a great rush! |
Because yellow looks horrible on me with my olive skin, I usually wear red shoes with navy. A pair of red patent sling backs would look really cute with that dress!
|
It is a cute pairing. I would only worry about colors being mistaken for her wanting to show preference to a sorority if she wears those colors EVERY DAY of recruitment.
|
I think most color combinations that PNM's wear during recruitment are somehow going to be a sorority's colors. I wouldn't sweat it. As a current member, when I rush girls I wouldn't think twice about a girl wearing my sorority's colors (unless it was completely obnoxious and incorporated into every aspect of the outfit.) Especially colors that generally go well together and are often worn together.

No dolphin necklace or trident earrings. She does however, have her kite earrings, necklace and bracelet to wear with her yellow shoes and black dress on pref night.
...just kidding. :) |
momof4girls, I like you. :)
I think it is awesome that you're helping your daughter plan her recruitment wardrobe and you're thinking early so you can watch for sales and see what is already in her closet! |

Also since you have so much time consider ordering online...especially since you say it's a pain to go shopping. Just check out websites' shipping policies because I've been surprised lately at how many have deals like free shipping over $75 or flat rate shipping and free returns. Free returns are the best. I'm a huge fan of shopping online when I've got plenty of time to send things back and exchange them before an event because there are so many options compared to what I can find in stores, especially size-wise. |

Actually, we do shop quite a bit online. We've had very good success with clothing, but not as much success with shoes. Of course, her idea of shopping online is finding something on a website and then traveling an hour and a half to the store to try it on.

Slight hijack but info for Momof4girls: best shoe shopping online imo is Zappos. Free shipping, free return shipping and 365 day return policy. Hard to beat that! When both daughters were still at home, the UPS guy was always stopping at our house!
|
Also try Rue La La - you have to join, no fee, but everyday they have a sale - today is Stuart Weitzman, tomorrow someone else - all high end designers and at RIDICULOUSLY discounted amounts - like $500.00 shoes for $150, etc.
