And yes, I (curiouss) will retire after this thread.

What secret?

pbpck 11-13-2001 02:07 AM

Was curioss SH80 as well?

justamom 11-13-2001 08:21 AM

There was a stock board I frequented and I discovered an amazing thing. When I had a feminine sounding name, no one would answer any questions or respond to my comments. I changed it to random letters and numbers. All of a sudden, my opinion and questions became important. Posters were interested in my comments. THEY THOUGHT I WAS A MAN. I can understand why someone might want to change their alias. There were times when I wanted to spout off, but "JAM" wouldn't say some of the things I was thinking. It didn't take long to see that here on GC, you really should be who you are and within reason share what you're thinking. Not everyone will agree or appear to like you, but there are plenty of those who will accept you (warts and all) just as you really are.

Yes, I found it very funny how I was treated as "curiouss" in contrast to SH80.

I don't really care whether you "buy" it or not. It's the truth. I guess we mods are a little brighter than you think. ;)

Well, Jess, she's got two screen names already... why not splurge and get three? Who knows how many personalities are hiding in there? :) :D

I said I was an APO, I guess that was a give away. :)

ZTAngel 11-13-2001 12:14 PM

Same writing style, same type of questions. We knew by your first couple of posts. Us mods are part time detectives.... :D

KillarneyRose 11-13-2001 01:10 PM

Same writing style, intonations, cadences, even paragraph breaks. Amazing that a minor in linguistic studies can actually come in useful sometimes!

I don't personally remember the exact post, but it was one of the first ones and I remember posting in the Mods Forum something to the effect of "Doesn't Curiouss sound a lot like that person who got booted that asked the dumb questions on the BGLO boards?"

Wow that was a compliment! I thought I asked dumb questions on ALL of the GLO boards, not just the BGLO boards. ;)

Call me a dumbass. But, what does intonations and cadences mean? Examples?

Linguistically, most posts may have been the same. But, they were tamer. So... that shows that I CAN behave myself and I am harmless. ;)

KillarneyRose 11-13-2001 01:51 PM

RE: SH80er's Questions

1. Yes, you're right, you did ask dumb questions on all of the boards. Perhaps I should have specified that the ones on the BGLO boards were offensive and borderline racist as well.

2. Intonation is they way in which certain words are emphasized. For example, when describing something that one wished to describe as "of high or fine quality", some people tend to always use the word "outstanding", some use "awesome" some use "great". For GreekChat allowances, I will expand the definition of intonation to include use of smilies as well :)

3. Cadence is the rhythmic flow of a speech or writing pattern. Unless someone is making a conscious effort to change theirs, their speech and writing will always fall into the same or a similar pattern, or meter if you will. It is also applied to length of sentences, paragraphs, etc.

Linguistics is often employed by profilers when reading ransom notes, threatening letters, suicide notes, etc. One's writing style is actually very difficult to alter, much like handwriting, and a lot of information can be gleaned from it.

Case in point...."more tamer". Repeated grammatical mistakes of a similar nature are also a good incidator that it is the same person operating under different identities.

Well I for one find the intecletual underwhelming! Along with the insensitiveness and moronic behavior! We were trying to be straight up with you on your questions, but you turned in the part of the donkey none of us would partake of!

Be true to your own self and friends or end up with neither!

I don't think you spelled that first part right, tommy boy.

;)

You guys should chill and just ignore her if you don't like her.

Of course, if you want to lower yourself to the degree of bashing another human's basic right to say what she wants...

go right ahead.

But I wont.
I'm better than that.

Ignoring people who stir up trouble on GreekChat isn't exactly one of the job requirements as a moderator, deja. You're pretty new to GC, and I don't think you were around when SH80 started trouble in the past, causing GCers to request that she be banned from the board. Perhaps you should take into account that you may not know the whole story before you give the mods advice on how to handle troublesome people on GC.

Furthermore, since SH80er/curiouss started the thread by asking the mods a direct question, then I don't see any reason why it should be ignored. If we had not answered the question, then we'd have probably been accused of being unresponsive as moderators. Now that we have, we're being accused of bashing "another human's basic right to say what she wants." It's just a no-win situation with some people. Oh well!

Yes, the keyword is PAST. What trouble have I stirred up lately?

Dejajeva 11-14-2001 12:10 PM

New I might be, dzrose, however...I have done my research. When you..and I use "you" loosely...accused me of being her...I went back and did a search. Perhaps yes, her questions and behavior was quite out of line...then...which would have required her dismissal from greekchat...but I do not believe that she has yet pushed herself to the same limit. Maybe in time she will.

What I'm only saying...and I'm not trying to be over argumentitive..is that perhaps constructive critisism would be of more use than calling names.

-shrugs, smiling-

Always,
Jess

As for doing research, it's kind of hard to run a search and find past posts that were so offensive that they were completely deleted from GC. So, I respectfully suggest that perhaps your research is incomplete and say, once again, that you do not know the whole, pardon the pun, "shady" story. ;)

By the way, thanks for using "you" loosely, because I for one never accused you of being SH80. :D I tend to keep my observations to myself for the most part until I'm sure about something.

Dejajeva 11-14-2001 12:43 PM

I'm not trying to start a fight with you, dzrose. Your a respected member of greekchat...and respected by myself as well.

I'm only stating my opinion...and research was not just conducted on posts...but on talking to people, ect. I never claimed to know the entire story. :)

I just think that with more positivity...this world would be a much nicer place to live.

:)

And it starts with people like us...trying to promote less of a concieted, snobby, rich-girl, uppity bitch notion, which is what most people who are not greek think about us in sororities..and more of a friendly...caring group of girls who promote kindness and looking the other way.

-smiles sweetly-

I agree with you on all points, deja, except the "looking the other way" part. I try very hard to ignore things, but sometimes people push me a little too far. That's when my Irish temper flares and overtakes my usual soft-spoken, Southern belle side. :) I guess you could just call me Scarlett. :D
