New Member Class sizes....

So I was reading the thread about initiation and was shocked at the numbers in the classes... I guess its all about school size... our total here is 60 because Clarion is a small school... our chapter is at about 40 now, where we usually are. the past classes were:
(our program is 4 weeks long, so we do 2 halves a semester, but its one class)

Fall 99 - 2
Spring 2000 - Mine! - 10 (8 (me) and 2)
Fall 2000 - 9 ( 6 and 3)
Spring 2001 - My Little! - 7 (6 and 1)
Fall 2001 - My 2 Little! - 8 (3 and 5)

Its just odd seeing larger numbers!

The1calledTKE 11-12-2001 03:13 PM

We have about 9000 at my school and our newest pledge class has 21 guys.

shadokat 11-12-2001 03:27 PM

AngelPhiSig--

Bloomsburg is just like Clarion. Problem is we have 10 sororities and like 60 women going through formal recruitment, so quota is 6. And of course, everyone doesn't get 6. Last semester, two sororities made quota, and two didn't get ANY! To have a pledge class of like 40 would be too much for our school :)

ZTAngel 11-12-2001 03:49 PM

We have over 1,000 PNM's come through rush each year and only 9 sororities (we'll be adding another one this fall thankfully!) Because of this, our new member classes are huge. When I rushed in Fall '99, I had a pledge class of 65! (7 sororities rushed this year...Kappa Alpha Theta colonized fall of '00 and Delta Gamma recolonized in the Fall of '99)
Fall '00- 71 (the largest so far but this is before we added our ninth sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta)
Fall '01- 67

Our pledge class size will probably be smaller next fall and the fall of '03 because Kappa Kappa Gamma will be colonizing soon.

ZTAngel-What chapters do you have and what school do you attend?

dzrose93 11-12-2001 05:58 PM

good topic!

At UGA, there are (I believe) 17 NPC sororities, and over 1,000 girls go through formal rush each year. Pledge class sizes are usually around 50-55 girls each fall.

AggieDZ 11-12-2001 06:06 PM

At Texas A&M, this year's quota was 54 for the eleven sororities on campus. Two years ago, quota was 71! Oh, our chapter total (which we are at) is over 200 girls.

PhiStar 11-12-2001 07:04 PM

numbers

max membership is 50 women (with exception) (in all the chapters, AZD, ZTA, GphiB, tri-Sigma, PhiM)
now this semester we have 14 new ladies! (who will be intiated this week!!) we'll most likely be at max for formal recruitment next fall. yay! :)

MenaceKiller 11-12-2001 07:17 PM

BAH, I say, BAH to all of you!

CSUN has 30,000 students.

It also has about 70 different clubs -- greek, student government, ethnic group, business advancement, drama, etc.

My frat is lucky to get 5 pledges a semester. BAH. :D

...... not that I'm complaining.... ;)

Total for my campus, NAU, is 90 and quota was 25, with 150 girls going trough rush, in past years it was as high as 35 and as low and 20 it just depends. Our field consultant is here and she was telling me that at here school, LSU, total is really high i think she said 230, but I could have miss heard, and new member classes of 60, and it blew me away.

I'm at the University of Central Florida and we have:
Zeta Tau Alpha
Pi Beta Phi
Alpha Xi Delta
Kappa Delta
Alpha Delta Pi
Kappa Alpha Theta
Delta Gamma
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta

and Kappa Kappa Gamma probably will be colonizing this fall.

Dejajeva 11-12-2001 09:26 PM

I have a really great friend from HS who went to University of Central Florida, actually...I had a bunch of friends from DeSoto go to UCF....and Yesenia I think joined one of the Latina Sororities there on Campus. :)

You heard your field consultant right. LSU is similar to UGA in its numbers. 230 total with a quota of 60 is pretty standard. :)

AlphaMu Sigma 11-13-2001 11:27 AM

about the same

HEY,
At my school the frats run about 10 to 20 new members per ruch. The sororities usually bring in from 30-50 i go to the 2nd largest university in Louisiana. Does that seem large to yall?

KSig RC 11-13-2001 12:03 PM

Depending on the particular rush, sororities here in Boston take between 20 and 30 (sometimes slightly more) during formal rush, and can take up to ceiling during informal. I think total right now is around 70 girls? (10 NPC sororities)

For the fraternities, it's all informal - we generally take around 15 a semester, and have 77 brothers right now (plus 11 pledges). I pledged with 20. We're the largest on campus, average size is b/w 35 and 40, ranging from 16 up to 77 (wide variety within there). 7 NIC fraternities recognized, plus 2 sub rosa, and one colony. Also, APO and KKPsi.

Boston University has 16,000 undergrads, and over 400 student groups and organizations . . . yeah, it's an activist campus. These groups range from housing groups to spectrum to a capella to SASSO (Students Against Stupid Student Organizations) . . . New England can be brutal - I definitely miss the midwest sometimes, especially when there's a protest against the CEO of Shell Oil speaking to the management senior class, across the street from a rally against US interests in Afghanistan . . . good times.

SSS1365 11-13-2001 12:26 PM

My school is small (about 3500 undergrads) and there are 9 NPC sororities. Less than 200 girls go through spring recruitment, and usually fall recruitment is less than 100. Spring recruitment is larger than fall because then freshmen are allowed to go through. My chapter has 32 members right now (we're the 2nd smallest on campus). Here's how the last 3 pledge classes looked:

Fall 2000 (mine): 5
Spring 2001: 13
Fall 2001: 8

Even the larger chapters here don't get much more than that. 18 is the largest pledge class I've heard of here. I can't even imagine 50 or more! But personally, I like it the way it is here. I wouldn't want over 200 sisters because I like personally knowing all of mine. :)

I know that at the big 3 in Florida (UCF, FSU,UF) pledge class size tends to be very large. I pretty sure that FSU and UF do quota the same way that UCF does it but this is how pledge classes become so large: 1,000 PNM's come through, that number is divided between the number of sororities, the number you get is the quota. As girls drop out of rush, they divide the remaining number by the amount of sororities. So, in other words, every girl can get a bid from somewhere. UCF quota this year was 67 and FSU's was close to 60. I'm not sure what UF's quota was but I know that it was always really large. But, with numbers like that, this means we get more great girls who will be ZTA's, right BrownEyedGirl?! :D

Optimist Prime 11-13-2001 01:41 PM

My school has around 9,000 which is a lot since last year we had like 5 or 6,000. There's like 80 girls in the biggest sorority i think. Maybe 85. Last year largest formal rush soroirty pledge class was like 30 or 35. OUr formal rush isn't till spring, so i'm sure that it will be bigger this year. Maybe we'll get another sorority. Who knows.
In the fraternity um..I have five pledge brothers. But IFC is starting a semi-formal rush. If you rush, you have to rush at least five fraternities. Our recruiment chair says he expects 15-20 guys coming out for us. That will unpresidented here. The largest here at my school i think was like 12 or so guys in a pledge class.

Harmony 11-13-2001 07:16 PM

At Penn State total is 85 (or around 85 I believe). Quota was 20 this semester. Numbers like 240-I can't even imagine!!!

IowaHawkeye 11-13-2001 08:45 PM

Iowa campus total is 120
quota is usually 30-40
I couldn't imagine any smaller or bigger, i like having a lot of new people to get to know, but not an ungodly huge amount!

ivysis 11-15-2001 01:33 AM

I am a senior Alpha Phi at the University of Colorado. There are about 25,000 undergrads here but the greek system isnt very strong so about 600 girls go through in Fall and 100 in spring. There are 10 sororities.
This year quota was 55, all but 2 houses met that. We came in top with 58, plus we gave out 3 or 4 snap bids. Initiation went well and we initiated 50 so far....some of the girls couldnt make it, so we will initiate them later.
Congratulations to all the wonderful houses out there....it looks like fall 01 rush went amazingly!

SLOTheta 11-27-2001 06:17 AM

Pledge Classes

I go to Cal Poly, SLO: 17,000 students, small greek population. Only about 300 girls went through Rush, quota was 35, we iniatiated 32 girls..not all houses met quota, one great house barely got 15, sad sad. Most of the houses are at 90 for house total.

AOX81 11-27-2001 09:41 AM

The school I attended only had 6500 students. Greek life was less than 1%.

My sorority just initiated four awesome girls a couple of weeks ago. Our pledge classes used to be bigger but Greek Life just seems to be getting smaller. Here is a look at the past few years.

Winter 1996-2 pledges
Fall 1996-7 pledges
Winter 1997-3 pledges
Fall 1997-15 pledges
Winter 1998-2 pledges
Fall 1998-10 pledges
Winter 1998-2 pledges
Fall 1999-8 pledges
Fall 2000-7 pledges
Winter 2001-6 pledges
Fall 2001-4 pledges

Have a nice day :)

aopirose 11-27-2001 11:06 AM

LSU

Unless Panhellenic voted to raise Chapter Total to 230 in the last 2 years, CT is set at 150. However with larger pledge classes and higher member retention rates, almost all chapters are well above 150. They range from the 180s into the 200s.

DukeBlue 11-27-2001 11:23 AM

Chapter total here is at 93, with almost all sororities WELL above that (I think Chi-O has something like 235 members, sheesh), and quota's somewhere in the 40s. They want to raise it so they can all do COB but that sort of screws my sorority over because we're way smaller than the rest and only do COB...most PNMs won't give us a chance as it is because we're not enormous and don't participate in formal rush, and if the others start doing COB even though they're ridiculously HUGE already, there's no one left for us. I love my sisters and wouldn't want to be in any other sorority, but it's frustrating.

Optimist Prime 11-27-2001 01:48 PM

Duke Blue, why don't you participate in formal rush?

DukeBlue 11-27-2001 04:05 PM

We have 10 members...compared to the other sororities' average of WELL over 100. We simply don't have enough people.

Although I think it started out because the women in my sorority didn't like the fakeness of formal rush and wanted to get to know rushees in a more relaxed setting to see what each was REALLY like.

aephi alum 11-27-2001 08:39 PM

At my school (MIT), we have:

5 sororities
5000 undergrads, about 40% of whom are women
About 150 women rushing in any given fall
Chapter total of 80
Quota between 28-31

4 sororities are consistently close to or over total after formal fall rush. The fifth (AEPhi) is much smaller - I think there are around 30 active sisters right now.

Usually 3 of the 4 big sororities make quota and the 4th gets around 25 new members; and AEPhi gets between 7 and 12. AEPhi also generally gets 1 or 2 new members through informal spring rush.

I simply can't get my head around the idea of a chapter total of 230 and new member classes almost as large as our chapter total. I deliberately chose not to join one of the "big 4" in part because I thought I would get lost. Imagine having 70 *pledge sisters*. Wow.

amycat412 11-27-2001 08:57 PM

U of Southern Cal's quota this past fall was 60, with houses being at or just over 200 total, there are 9 houses.

PhiMuJennaJen20 11-27-2001 09:02 PM

small school here, as well, but we have decent numbers. our ceiling for the sorority is 65. fall pick up was 14 this year, leaving us at 64. (we had a girl transfer.) our quotas in the spring are usually anywhere from 16-20.

clarion? i'm from westminster.:)

MooseGirl 11-28-2001 12:14 AM

Although my school is medium sized (about 10,000 fulltime undergrads), we have very few go through recruitment. we have 2 sororities and 3 frats. we usually get less than 10 new members a year. our total is 30 (which i've never seen us at) and quota is set by national at 10(this is new this year)

new members:
fall 2001 - 9
spring 2001 - 0
fall 2000 - 4
spring 2000 - 1
fall 1999 - 6
spring 1999 - 0
fall 1998 - 3 (my class)

this year has actually been well for all greeks. The other sorority initiated 7 new members...good for both of us since we both started with 4 actives.

aprilxo 11-28-2001 10:46 AM

hmmm... around here I think there are between 5,000-6,000 students at my school, most of them male b/c it's an engineering school. anyhoo, my sorority has 17 pledges this semester and about 65 or so members total? (there are only three sororities, by the way) and my fiance's fraternity has 23 pledges, which is the largest pledge class out of all the frats on campus. i think the guys who get the least number of pledges is probably the triangle house with maybe at most 4 or so, but i can't be for sure positive on that :) and i don't even know how many fraternities there are... quite a few though!
