TFM theme semiformal

My chapter is considering having a tfm/tsm theme for an upcoming semi-formal. Any ideas on saying for our t shirt ideas?

T shirts for an event. NF.

IrishLake 01-18-2011 10:23 PM

How about a picture of a hammer?

33girl 01-18-2011 10:29 PM

Don't have t-shirts. Have pin-on popped collars that you can hand out to all the "lucky" attendees.

Unless they have a frocket!

But seriously, having to ask shows a very poor understanding of the phenomenon.

Betsss 01-18-2011 10:44 PM

sillies, the tshirt isn't for the event its self. its for after...

tld221 01-18-2011 10:50 PM

OK, i'll ask. TFM?

Gusteau 01-18-2011 10:52 PM

Total Frat Move...keep up with the times tld! :p

Betsss 01-18-2011 11:04 PM

on the front there going to say Gamma Phi Beta. TSM.
we just need something for the back, one we we're thinking of was...

I refuse to marry a GDI because he will never be able to have enough groomsmen to match my number of bridesmaids. TSM.

other suggestions?

Honestly I find TFM funny, but the real TFM would be your letters on the front and TSM on the back. Because real TSM attitude means all you'd need to say is Gamma Phi Beta. ;)

I wouldn't add any of the quotes. Because for anyone not familiar with the site, you'll just look like snobby bitches. Don't risk someone taking one of those quotes seriously.

Tulip86 01-19-2011 07:37 AM

Horrible website, with a horrible perspective on the Greek system.
But I get why you'd use is, and I fully agree with Alumiyum. Why the quote when your letters could say it all?

ree-Xi 01-19-2011 12:22 PM

ehhh....no.

Optimus Prime 01-20-2011 12:47 PM

I agree.

This idea is just, well, kinda bad. Mainly because people WILL take it the wrong way and it'll go from being cute to stereotypical and snobby (as was said earlier) really fast.

If you're going to do it, I'd agree with the others with your letters on the front and TSM on the back.

DTD Alum 01-20-2011 07:28 PM

Ditch that slogan, it's not clever or catchy. I agree that IF you are going to do a shirt like this, the best would be to have your letters on front and TSM on back.

However, and I know we hate talking about tiers on here, let's be real for a second. There is no way to make this look good. If you are a top tier chapter, a theme like this will make you look snobby and elitist, which is generally a stereotype that most "top" chapters are already saddled with and usually wish to avoid. If you are a bottom tier chapter, this could backfire and potentially make you look desperate and like you are trying too hard. I can see GDIs seeing the inherent snobbery and going, "Uhh, isn't that the nerdy chapter anyways? Why are they putting us down?"

I think a shirt without a slogan is fine and your best bet, not a bratty slogan and corresponding theme party.

Agree with DTD_Alum

As obnoxious/stupid as the tier thing is, for a house that is considered "tops" by many, and is very exclusive during rush, this will make you look incredibly stuck up.
For a house that is in the middle or not that well-respected on campus, it's just giving an opportunity for jerks/jealous people/idiots in general to make fun of you (not that you'd deserve it, people are just mean sometimes).

If you really want to use the TFM theme, I'd suggest a frocket tee with their little sailboat logo and your letters on the front, then with a quote on the back about the event followed by TSM. Something like "having the best formal ever. TSM" or "Having the best date nights since 1874. TSM."
(Okay, those actual quotes are lame, and prove why I am not the T-shirt person, but something clever along those lines would match the theme without making anyone look bad).

GeorgiaGreek 01-20-2011 08:03 PM

Just thought of a possible quote.

"Semi-formal. Fully classy. TSM" or "Semi formal. Totally classy. TSM."
:)

If you have to use the word "classy", you usually aren't.

It depends. On my campus, where no sorority or fraternity is generally speaking "frat" (according to TFM) it would be funny...for that reason. And our campus Greek life is certainly not unique in that respect. If it's a campus where some organizations take "frat" seriously....you're right.

I think "Gamma Phi Beta" on the front with simply "TSM" on the back would be ok (and funny IMO). But again the quotes could be seriously misinterpreted no matter what the campus atmosphere.

Oh, I was speaking specifically for slogans. The letters on front and TSM on the back (or TFM for a fraternity) is great, especially if its a neon tank. Obviously tongue in cheek. Once you throw a slogan into it, you are opening the floodgates wide for criticism and hateration.

Fully agree. Were I not familiar with the site and saw some of those quotes on a t-shirt I would make very unfavorable assumptions about the organization represented.

I actually agree with that; my thinking was that a slogan like that would be in the style of what is written on TFM, not them trying to prove to someone that they are classy.

Reagan/Bush '84 shirts should suffice.

KSig RC 01-21-2011 05:40 PM

No reason not to go whole-hog - Sperrys are semi-formal right?
