Porch/Bar Sing-a-longs

To try to make the day on a happier note (god bless those who died earlier today) we have pretty much all been to a party where everyone was sitting on the porch and someone pulled out a guitar and everyone started to sing, or at a bar, or just hanging. What ere some songs that everyone always joined in on, at your campus, or whenever you go out?

Mr. Big- To Be With You (definately a porch tune)
Billy Joel- Piano Man
Don McClean- American Pie
Gloria Gaynor- I Will Survive
Raw Base- It Takes Two
Most Barenaked Ladies Songs

Sue_XO 11-12-2001 02:29 PM

American Pie for us too!
Do you do the hand motions along with the song also??

Also the song - is it "Cats in the Cradle" - does anyone know what I mean?

shadokat 11-12-2001 03:00 PM

American Pie, for sure!!!

Also, Brown Eyed Girl and Buttercup. :)

AngelPhiSig 11-12-2001 03:18 PM

In our house its definately Buttercup and Whats your fantasy, also Livin on a Prayer has a special place for our chapter!

oooooooo--I love sing along songs! I would have to say my favorites are

Piano Man(Billy Joel)
American Pie(which was also my pledge class song, so we have our own words)
Brown Eyed Girl
I've got Friends in Low Places
Living on a Prayer(Bon Jovi)
Where the Green Grass Grows(I forget who sings it, but its a GREAT song)
Sweet Home Alabama
Only the Good Die Young

We also had a GREAT country band in Elon called Dakkota and some of the members were Lambda Chi's, so they would play at all there functions. They had songs that were actually about places we had been to, so that was fun. My favorite was a song called "141", which is the exit number for Elon and it talks about all the good stuff waiting for you at exit 141. I actually heard them this weekend and it brought back sooooooooo many good memories!

Billy Joel's Piano Man and then, my fav bar song of all time!, Garth Brooke's "Friends in Low Places".

Add American Pie, Brown Eyed Girl, and Piano Man to my list too.

Usually when we get done singing the 50 million verses of American Pie, I'm out of breath.

We also sing Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, Margaritaville, that locker room song from "A League of Their Own" (my pledge class song), and the raunchy sorority songs we learn every year at Sisterhood Retreat (but I'm smart enough not to post those songs here!). ;)

KSigkid 11-12-2001 05:49 PM

At parties and such, there are some favorites:

Louie, Louie (although no one knows the words, we act like we do)

Pianoman (seems to be a favorite everywhere)

Juicy (Notorious BIG song, everyone seems to know the words to it)

Any Sublime song (Santeria, What I Got, etc.)

Sell Out (Reel Big Fish, fun song to sing to)

There are others, but I can't remember them all...probably cause we're drunk most of the time we sing them.

our #1 sing along - LIKE A PRAYER by MADONNA

... down on my knees, i want to take you there...
in the midnight hour, i can feel your power

you get the point...

Also, any quality 80's song will do....
anything by Bon Jovi
Shook me all night long - ACDC
8675309 Jenny by Tommy Tutone

at home - sweet home chicago is a classic

Oh geez. I was actually hanging out with a bunch of Sigma Chis last night with my girls. Just playing rounds of quarters and pool at a friend's townhouse. And "I've got friends in low places" came on their system and everyone pushed out their chairs and stumbled to the living room for a rousing rendition!

But for sure my Big Sis and I always seem to do a drunk request for "Aint no fun." If you saw us two little proper girls, you would be hysterical seeing us rap these nasty lyrics that we know by heart.

I'll post some of my favorites when my memory clears up!
;) (KsigKid...I hear you on that one!)

You guys are killing me.....maybe it's just an Ohio thing but our number one singalong bar song is "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond. I almost died when they had the Ally McBeal episode where the whole bar sang along with that because we have done it at our bar for years, and one of my friends who went to U of Wisconsin (Go Badgers!!) said Neil was like a god in Chicago.

Sinatra's version of "New York New York" has always been a biggie, we always ended our date parties with that one and would sing it complete with a Rockettes-style kick line....

"Mony Mony" complete with the enhanced lyrics (if you don't know what I am talking about perhaps I am just showing my age)

Almost ANY Beatles song, but "Hey Jude" is always a good one, especially when you have a bunch of drunk people doing the four minutes of "na na na nas"

George Thoroghgood "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer"

"Roxanne" by the Police.....but then this one has a drinking game attached to it, so maybe it's more that than the song....

"Brown Sugar" by the Stones
"Rainy Day Women #s 12 and 69 (or whatever numbers they are)..." by Bob Dylan
"The Bitch Is Back" by Elton John (I LOVE that song!!!)
"Dancing Queen" or "Take A Chance On Me" Abba
There are so many more but I'll see if anyone else has them....

ErikaXO 11-12-2001 11:16 PM

Oh my God, Oh my God.....

"Why Don't We Get Drunk And Screw" by Jimmy Buffett!!!! How could I forget???!!!!!

Erika, we must both be ladies of a "certain age" 'cause I know EXACTLY what you're talking about :D

My Songs...
"Paradise by the Dashboard Light"
"Copacobana"
"American Pie"

ErikaXO 11-12-2001 11:59 PM

Killarney, let's just say that when that song was popular originally, in the (gulp) 80s.....it was banned from our school dances because we would all sing the "extra lines!!!!" Heehee

Copacabana is awesome.....AmyCat will see this and groan.....but I LOVE Barry Manilow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DeltAlum 11-13-2001 01:20 AM

Cat's in the Cradle by Jim Croce as I recall.

And I know the real words to Louie Louie -- and they aren't dirty.

Great songs from everyone. Brown Eyed Girl reminds me so much of college because of a certain young lady behind the stadium...

Also, used to sit in the Varsity Club in Columbus and listen to Sinatra and Glen Yarborough.

Sorry.

"Paradise by the Dashboard Light"! Love that song! :D "American Pie" is a classic of my chapter's also, as is "Shook Me All Night Long" and Tom Petty's "American Girl".

Bryan Adams' "Summer Of '69" is my own personal fave because a pledge sister and I made up our own words to the song our sophomore year. We still sing our version whenever it comes on the radio, and I requested it played at her wedding reception a couple of years ago so that we could dance to it! :)

ErikaXO 11-13-2001 04:48 PM

DZrose, you just brought back SUCH a memory for me. My sophomore year, right after Wayne's World came out, my best XO friend Lori and I were the ultimate SAE groupies. We were both going to formal with SAEs and we used to hang out there constantly. I used to write these goofy little things to her to crack her up, and for fun one time I wrote a song to the tune of "Bohemian Rhapsody" but called it "Eleusinian Rhapsody." It was all about us and the SAEs. She loved it and we memorized it, going so far as to perform it for our sisters. We even did the head-banging part, which got us in trouble one night. We were sitting in my car in the parking lot of the education building, cramming down some Taco Bell before we headed to the SAE party. To get pumped up we decided to pop my Queen disc in and sing our song.....as we were banging our heads, my whole car was shaking (I had a little Toyota Celica) and this cop drove by......he thought we were on drugs....boy did he laugh at us when we told him what we were doing......!!!!!:o

Jesus, how did I forget all of those...must be too much alcohol.

And yeah, as the random kid from Connecticut, everyone knows that I'm definitely pretending when I sing along to the country stuff ("How Do You Like Me Now by Toby Keith," etc.)
