30-Day Shred

My girls told me that their friends have really toned up plus lost up to 30 lbs. in a month using this DVD. I've never heard of it or the people who put it out and would like to tone up more (but not lose 30 lbs. either). Ballerina says it's a rough workout but then she just had a baby.

Have any of y'all used the DVD?

I love this DVD! It really is a tough video, but the first time I did it I was able to get through level 1. Levels 2 and 3 are definitely a lot harder.. I've only watched those so far, not actually attempted them.

It really does get your heart going, and its only a 25 minute workout, so its easy to fit into your daily routine. My mom and I are both doing this.. Me, to get more toned; her, to lose some weight. She's lost 5 pounds in just a couple weeks.

I would highly recommend using this!

(Btw.. You need a floor mat if on a hard surface, and 2 small hand weights)

33girl 01-16-2011 12:14 PM

This is the Jillian Michaels one, right? I did the No More Trouble Zones for a month and had amazing results. Anything with her name on, definitely get it!! She knows what she's doing.

And yeah, she kicks your ass big time, but that's the whole point.

sceniczip 01-16-2011 05:23 PM

I've been doing this for awhile now! It's fantastic! I've made it through level 1 and today is my last day at level 2. It kicks my butt! I've noticed I've definitely lost inches though haven't taken measurements throughout the whole thing and I'm much more flexible. I highly recommend it!

LikeASista 01-16-2011 05:45 PM

Oh wow! Thanks for this thread! I've been a Taebo fanatic for years, but I've been hearing so much about this 30-Day shred thing that I'm convinced I need something else to motivate me to try this out. Thank you for helping me decide.

victoriana 01-16-2011 09:26 PM

I kind of want to try this! Do you get really sore afterwards?

carnation 01-16-2011 09:29 PM

I think I do want to try it! ZetaDaughter is here for a week and she and I are going to go out and find a copy. I'll let y'all know if we can't move afterwards.

sceniczip 01-16-2011 09:40 PM

Sometimes I get really sore. When I first started, the next day every time I moved my abs hurt! I don't notice I'm as sore with level two though if I try and lift heavy stuff I'll notice it.

ASTalumna06 01-16-2011 11:22 PM

I didn't find that I was too sore after doing this for the first time. The workouts are relatively short and are based on a balance of abs, strength and cardio, so you're not overworking any one area over another.

There are also two girls who work out with Jillian - one does the complete workout, and the other demonstrates easier versions of some of the moves. For example, one will do real push-ups while the other does them on her knees (which I do!). So if you can't perform a certain exercise, you can do the modified version to make it slightly easier.

victoriana 01-16-2011 11:55 PM

That's awesome. I have some knee problems which prevent me from doing certain things so that's good that they have modified moves. I think I'll try this as well! For those who have done it, what kind of results have you seen in terms of weight loss?

With the one I did, I didn't so much see stepping-on-the-scale weight loss as I did toning. All I know is jeans that were tight a month before, I put on and had to go to the store and buy a belt because they were falling off me.

Keep this thread going - you guys are giving me inspiration to start doing this on a regular basis again.

ThetaDancer 01-17-2011 03:13 PM

You guys have me interested in this now! This is probably not something I would have otherwise done, but I'm seriously thinking about. I don't know if I totally understand how this works (with the levels and everything) but how does this work out long-term? Like how do you maintain results? Do you just start back at level 1?

I feel like I need a new workout challenge, especially once I finish my bikram 30 day challenge. I'm great about doing cardio and balancing it with yoga & pilates, but I hate hate hate weights (and really any upper body exercise). I think something like this might be good for me because I'd have something to "make" me do strength exercises that I would otherwise be unmotivated to do.

honeychile 01-17-2011 03:23 PM

The last workout video I used, I considered getting through the warm up as an accomplishment! Granted my she-benchpresses-twice-her-weight sil gave it to me, but wow.

I'll be waiting to see how it works - good luck!

AlphaFrog 01-17-2011 03:31 PM

Does anyone know if Netflix carries this? I would look myself, but the Droid doesn't like Netflix, and the Netflix app is one step below retarded.

Munchkin03 01-17-2011 03:50 PM

Yes, they do have the whole Jillian Michaels line on Netflix. :)

Good luck, gals! I am kind of a gym rat and I love seeing the results of my hard work.

Beryana 01-17-2011 04:51 PM

I thought about this DVD and might pick it up for later. Right now I'm taking advantage of my physical therapy for my shoulder to work on upper body - and staying after to use the gym and work on the rest. I figure until I get my shoulder issue worked out (4 weeks of PT) to stick to that route - and am using the lifts and such on both arms. Will definitely look at the DVD in a month or so based on the reviews :)

Tulip86 01-17-2011 05:05 PM

they need to start selling that thing here ASAP!

victoriana 01-17-2011 05:26 PM

You could probably have it shipped internationally. :)

Xylochick216 01-17-2011 05:28 PM

Amazon and eBay usually have it.

I did this for awhile a few years ago. It kicked my butt. If I had more room in my house to do it, I'd do it more often. I have such a small space and a 90 pound dog that thinks me getting on the floor = playtime. It's great for the legs!

Chicago88 01-17-2011 06:09 PM

Is this better than Insanity or P90x?

sceniczip 01-17-2011 06:43 PM

I just started level 3 today. I actually think it's easier than level 2! lol. Right now I'm doing mostly modifications for plank stuff. The planks always kill me :p

I've never done P90x, but one of my friends who has, she told me that she got better results using Jillian's 30 Day Shred video.

Again, I think what's great about it is that it works out EVERYTHING in 25 minutes, and it's a great workout. You don't need 15 different videos, each of which only focuses on a particular area of the body.

33girl 01-18-2011 02:01 PM

Also - if you have OnDemand on your TV, check out the "exercise" section and sometimes the Jillian stuff is under there. It's not the full workout but it'll give you a taste of what she does.

Tulip86 01-18-2011 08:05 PM

I just downloaded it, looks like something I can manage to do!
I'm starting thursday because I have kickboxing lessons tomorrow!

sarahsmilehawk 01-19-2011 10:07 AM

I bought the DVD but haven't tried it yet. I always skip out on weight training and ab work because I don't know what I'm doing, so I'm hoping this helps. Are you supposed to do the video every day or take breaks to let your muscles recover?

AlphaFrog 01-19-2011 11:03 AM

Alright, y'all...I Netflix'd this and it should be here Friday. Here's hoping I can move on Saturday. Chuck E Cheese birthday party to go to...ugh! Is EVERYONE conspiring with those 5 holiday pounds to keep them around?

YES.

I think we need a GC workout support thread! :D

Definately!
I'm actually quite excited to start doing this.. just need to buy the weights (have to wait for my paycheck this friday) and get started!

ComradesTrue 01-19-2011 12:37 PM

I have never been able to consistently do a work-out program at home, mostly due to all the distractions: kids, house cleaning, house projects, internet, etc that just beckon me away. The only way that I have been able to stick with a program is to hit the gym daily, but with kids sick all through winter I haven't been able to go too much.

So, even though I have half a dozen work out DVDs at home, I bought this one based on the comments in this thread. (only $9 at Target, btw) I did it for the first time yesterday and loved it! I think that this is one that I can stick with because it covers so much in just 20 minutes. Plus, it is not a "loud" workout that I am afraid to do while my young kids nap. Yes, a treadmill sits unused in our playroom, as well as two different steppers.

I'm counting down the hour until I can get the kids down to nap so that I can do this again. I love that it combines several muscle groups at once, as well as alternating cardio, strength, and abs. I felt great after, though I did have to make a return trip to Target this morning to buy a set of 5 pound weights. Since I only had 8 and 10 pound hand weights at home, I used those. There were a couple of moves that were painful to downright impossible for me to do with 2 weights of that size.

I've also logged onto Jillian's website (free 30 day trial with purchase of my DVD) and downloaded some yummy recipes.

All in all, one day into the maddness, I give it an A. Let's see what I think about it in 29 more days.

And I am all for a GC workout support thread. Accountability goes a long way towards meeting goals.

AGDee 01-19-2011 12:42 PM

I think we have one..

After reading this thread, I went on and NetFlix'd mine, too. It just arrived today (or rather, yesterday, Wednesday). I can't wait to try it out! I got home late, so I couldn't look at it tonight, but I'm definitely slipping it in on tomorrow (er ... I mean, later tonight).

AlphaFrog 01-23-2011 07:54 AM

I'm on day 3 today.

The cardio is definitely getting easier, but the strength is still killer on my muscles. My husband's doing it with me, but he's using 7.5 lb weights as opposed to my 2.5 lb.

wavycutchip 01-23-2011 09:06 AM

The 30 day shred is one of my favorite workout videos. I bought it last year, and used it for the full 30 days back last April-May. I had great results, and lost 10 lbs, lost lots of inches, and felt much more toned. I hit a plateau on my weight loss, so I started trying other DVDs (Jillians and others that I had bought over the years), but still use 30 day shred, especially on days when I am in a hurry or just couldn't fit in a longer workout.

My suggestion, after starting and stopping the 30 day plan a couple of times, is to start on Level 1, then jump to Level 3 (but start with the modified moves), then go to Level 2. For me, Level 2 was so hard because there is a lot of plank-type cardio sections, and modifying level 3 helped me get the arm strength needed to do level 2 with confidence (and not completely wear me out for the next day).

Hope you are enjoying the shred!

carnation 01-23-2011 07:40 PM

My daughter has lost more than 5 lbs. in doing the workout this week. Good, that only leaves her about 10 post-baby lbs. to go.

sceniczip 01-23-2011 10:03 PM

Today was day 4 level 3 for me! My abs are very sore lol.

AlphaFrog 01-24-2011 09:31 AM

When did y'all switch levels? I know she says "when you're comfortable", but I honestly have no idea how to gauge "comfort" in regards to a workout. I really just thought it was meant to be 10 days on each level before she said that.

sceniczip 01-24-2011 05:35 PM

I did roughly 10 days on each level. I would move up and sort of test it and if it felt like I was taking too many breaks or doing too many modifications I went back down to the previous level. That seemed to be a pretty good judge.

33girl 01-24-2011 09:11 PM

I just tried Jillian's 6 Pack in 6 Weeks (I think that's what it's called). I only got through one circuit and had to stop. I'm a wuss. :p

sceniczip 01-30-2011 11:48 AM

Today was day 8 of level 3. It was supposed to be day 10 but Friday I was exhausted and yesterday time just got away from me :p

LikeASista 01-30-2011 02:35 PM

Okay, I tried this for the very first time yesterday (because I just went through grieving the death of my uncle), and I could barely get through 20 minutes of the thing. I think I stopped after a good 15 minutes.

But then, when I got up this morning, I could see my neck and throat looked a little more toned. After only one workout??? And after only 15 minutes, too???? There's something said for that Jillian Michaels. (But I quickly wrapped the DVD back into the Netflix thingy to send back ... I'm stickin' with my Taebo. :p )
