Heard from a Texas friend that girls who wear duck boots are trashy. Is this true?

Soo I have no idea if this is true, but one of my friends said that in Texas girls who wear duck boots are "rednecks' or "trashy". I am wondering if this is true. See, I need new boots for the cold and snow. I do have a pair of uggs but I they are getting worn. On TFM, they are always commenting on LL Bean boots/duck boots. If girls wear duck boots, is that trashy? I need opinions because I want new boots! Other boot options would be nice :)

A better question: Aren't you too old to conduct a survey to determine which boots to wear?

Chicago88 12-19-2010 10:30 PM

My puppy just ate my last pair of boots. I bought a pair of booties from target that look exactly like the ones at Steve Madden for over half the price. even though I love Steve Madden, go for what YOU like. Who cares what everyone else thinks.

Alumiyum 12-19-2010 10:40 PM

TFM is entertaining, but is not a source for reliable information, even when it comes to your boots.

Get the ones you like the best. If you aren't a trashy person, boots won't make you look like one.

KSUViolet06 12-19-2010 10:51 PM

LOL at people taking fashion advice (or anything other than entertainment, really) from TFM/TSM.

Why do people bother with Uggs for snow? They're the warmest shoe I've ever owned, but they don't keep my feet very dry if I have to walk through a lot of snow (and with my commute, that's likely to happen). Once it gets snowy out, I wear heavy duty, waterproof boots.

I just asked my Texan mom and she said it depends on what part of Texas you are from. She said that in the city it's not considered trashy (she's from Houston) but she said that out in hill country it can be seen that way in rural areas.

I've only seen women wearing these boots in the rain (I've lived in the hill country and in DFW). I can't imagine them being worn at other times.

Even when I lived in Maryland, they were only worn during inclement weather or while walking near the shores. I don't know how they'd be considered fashionable.

Hey now, KS. I own 2 pairs of UGGs.

Chicago88 12-19-2010 11:17 PM

I just had to google duck boots to find out what they were. Granted Ive never set foot in an LL Bean much less know where one is but Ive lived in Texas my entire life. Ive seen girls wear rain boots as a fashion statement but unless you're going duck hunting (and I really hope youre not) then I dont see these as fashionable but more as utilizate-able? For lack of the word Im trying to think of.

They really are though! You know that episode of Seinfeld where George has that massive Russian fur hat and he says he doesn't even need a coat because the hat is so warm? (I hope someone knows what I'm talking about...) Well it's kinda like that, but with my feet, lol

ETA: Two pair Ugg club too, lol

Taking TFM seriously...

Barbie's_Rush 12-19-2010 11:30 PM

Uggs are fine if it's not wet or snowing. They are the warmest.

In rain or snow though North Face boots = TFM.

Obviously in a company that appreciates people who are prepared for sudden flooding. Sex-ay hippie ankles.

AOII Angel 12-20-2010 12:11 AM

The sock/sandal combo is less offensive than the highwater khakis!

Ah...I see Barbie noticed, as well!

If you live somewhere that boots are used to actually protect your feet from the elements, fashion goes out the window in favor of whatever will get you from here to there in one piece dry and comfy. If you're from a mixed weather place, I'd go fashion, and boots are HUGE this year. I'm loving that the scrunchy ankle boots are back (woo hoo 80's!) but I haven't gotten around to buying a pair.

But it slays me that women wear Uggs in Dubai. Seriously people, fashion is fashion, but you're in the desert, and warm and toasty is NOT a selling point. Once you get sand in that fur, is it EVER coming out again?

33girl 12-20-2010 10:52 AM

If you're in a very wet or cold climate, it would look "trashier" to walk around in stillettos or other inappropriate-for-the-weather footwear.

If you're wearing these (or Uggs or any winter boots) in a very warm, dry climate, you're an idiot and should have your high school diploma rescinded. And you should probably be beat to the death on top of it.

I've seen women in Puerto Rico (a climate that has a high temp of 80+ year round) wear Uggs. WTF!

Well, here's a Southerner who also loves L.L. Bean and who loves his duck shoes.

When I was in college (back in the day), L.L. Bean was right up there with Brooks Bros. as one of thee standard places to get preppy attire, and no one could consider themselves preppy unless they had at least one pair of duck shoes.

Yay for the Bean! We've been shopping there forever. I guess living so close to Maine, I never thought of Bean-wear as a fashion statement. Their stuff is made for wear and tear, and their stuff lasts forever. Sure, a lot of it is practical, but that's necessary in New England. They also have great travel accessories. I bought my hubby this amazing duffel for Christmas this year.

The headquarters store is awesome, they have a lot of great deals there.

OMG.

Teenaged girls in Ohio,

When it's almost summer, the snow is gone, and it's 60 out--PUT THE UGGS AWAY.

I am tired of seeing you walking around in shorts/skirts and UGGs during the summer.

Thanks,
Violet.

Second!

KillarneyRose 12-20-2010 06:53 PM

I honestly didn't know they still made duck boots! They were very big back in the day when I was in junior high. Of course, I couldn't afford actual duck boots so I was stuck with f--k boots or whatever the hell they were called.

Back to the topic at hand, I don't understand how duck boots could be remotely trashy unless someone has a rubber fetish.

I see this in Alabama. In some parts it gets semi-chilly (at least for us natives) at night in the summer. Ok, I'll buy Uggs and shorts...at night...in May...if you aren't going out in public. If you do, I will talk shit about you.

What is that about and why do so many girls do it? Also, in the winter you wear Uggs with jeans or leggings (note: leggings are not pants). If you wear Uggs and a denim mini, again, I will laugh at you. That makes zero sense.

TriDeltaSallie 12-20-2010 07:46 PM

Life-long Midwesterner who also loves LLBean. And duck boots rock! They are warm, dry and comfy. If you live somewhere with a real autumn where it gets wet and chilly, you understand why these are great. :)

HARD.

Tights/leggings =/= trousers. Seriously women.

And if you are ever in doubt as to if a garment is a shirt or a dress, the answer is assuredly SHIRT, and therefore, you need PANTS.

YES.

I am so tired of seeing butt crack and cameltoes. It's a plague on my campus.

FleurGirl 12-20-2010 11:47 PM

I totally wear my Uggs to the library at night. For privacy reasons I won't say where I am, but suffice to say I am south of the Mason-Dixon line ;)
It gets cold inside! I like my toes to be warm!
